  • Lets have a first look at the new B-17 The Mighty 8th Redux game which is due for early access release. Lets head up for a quick mission and have a look around the game.
Please be aware this footage is from an early development version which is constantly being updated and the release version will be a more advanced version.
The classic game remastered. Feel the power of flying a 10-men crew on a B-17 over occupied Europe in WWII. Plan the mission, choose your men and take action in every post onboard, from pilot to bombardier and machine gunners. Get ready for a high-flying adventure in this all-time classic remake
    Steam - store.steampowered.com/app/20...
    ABOUT THIS GAME
The missions undertaken by the crews of B-17 bombers during World War II are the stuff of legend. What was it like to fly through relentless anti-aircraft fire over Nazi-occupied Europe? What was it like to have a thin layer of steel between life and death at 15,000 feet? How did it feel to furiously fend off enemy fighters zipping around your plane and then to precisely deliver your payload over enemy targets?
Find out for yourself as you lead a 10-man crew to victory... or defeat... against squadrons of Nazi warplanes in the legendary B-17 Flying Fortress!
    Redux
The same experience remastered with the original engine upgraded to support the functionality present in DX 12. Working on the redux will give us the opportunity to look back and learn in order to push forward with future Flying Fortress titles.
    Features
Take Control of Different Crew Roles aboard a B-17
    Historical Campaigns
    Quick Start Missions

I hope the 3d models would be improved. The engine cowlings and wheels really show the age of the models. A second hope is an improvement of the terrain textures. I tried to like that but struggled. Still, I persevered with it far more than 1944 - Across the Rhine. That game was obtusely difficult to get into and dare I say it, too much for the PC hardware of the era to cope with.

So recently I looked up a replay of it and was aghast at what it looks like by today's standards... but one thing I still miss is the level of immersion, the career/campaigns of the older games. Like this one - flying through flak in this game somehow felt more immersive than even modern games like Il2.

'B17 Flying Fortress The Mighty Eighth'', the game this remake is based on, was the sequel to B17. One Sim I would love to see a Redux of is a old (mid to late 90s) Sim called "Overlord", which was a campaign from Feb of 44 thru to July 44, concentrating on Gaining Air Dominance over Northern France
You could fly a Spitfire IX, a P-51B, A Hawker Typhoon or a Mosquito in a wide variety of Missions, Train intercepts, Anti V1 missions, CAP and bomber escort, anti- ship and anti-armour as well as others.... One great feature was a single press vision lock on a Flying enemy (Bf 109G, Fw 190A or D, Junkers 88.) Basically your pov locked onto the enemy plane and you had to drag your gunfight into FOV to shoot it diwn. Worked a treat once you understood the physics and purpose....

I wonder if they will finally let us look left and right from the waist gun positions...lol. Hopefully the updated exterior will mean the terrible pilot cabin windows LOD change when zooming out slightly will be a thing of the past. Looking forward to this one

Great episode taff, can certainly see a difference in the remastered version.. and the principles are the very same, plan out and combat is as gripping as the original, there is some very good differences but there's not really that much difference external wise, gunshots, AAA, aircraft model set outs, tracers and even explosions. Maybe there's more updates to come as we go along.. probably not the case but it's nice to think that way.. if so then I was proven wrong. Very nostalgic to the original, nice operational flight. Thanks taff, very entertaining 👍

The rear gun-sight being off centre is kind accurate in a round about way. The sight was linked to the two guns through a series of wires and pullies, and this system would develop slack over time so eventually the sights and gun didn't line up. It probably didn't get this bad, but the Operational Research Reports by the 8th Air Force found the tail position to be by far the worst gun position on the B-17 in terms of accuracy, to the point it was probably useless except at point blank range. That was however more the fault of the twin .50 cals rarely firing in unison, so each gun going off individually caused the guns to swing left and right constantly, with only the gunner sitting in an awkward position trying to hold the guns on target.

@@cyberfutur5000 To be honest the entirety of the US equipment set for shooting down German fighter was pretty much useless for purpose, that is why the self-defending bomber concept went down in flames in 1943.
The tail position was horrible, but on all gun positions (other than the Ball and Top turret) the gun sights were totally unsuited for air combat. A waist gunner for example could not actually use his sights to defend another US bomber under attack, so the whole idea of bombers mutually supporting each-other with their guns was almost impossible. The gun sights were only useful for self defense against a fighter attacking the aircraft the gunner was on.
Only the compensating sights on the Top and Ball turret, which automatically calculated deflection so long as the gunner inputted the wingspan and distance of the German fighter correctly, had any chance. IMO the top and ball turret was probably responsible for the majority of German fighters shot down by US gunners during WWII, as they were the only ones that had the sights that really gave them a chance.
Yeah brave guys in the US bombers, but unfortunately they never really had a chance until fighter escorts arrived. Too much of the American gunnery side of things was flawed (equipment) or not well thought out until later in the war (gunner training). It just wasn't really well appreciated during the war because the gunners submitted wildly inflated claims for how many fighters they were shooting down, and the USAAF leadership believed them for the most part. Eaker writes to Spaatz or Happ Arnold about US bombers shooting down 6 German fighters for every loss, which is what the claims were telling him, but the reality was 1-2 US bombers were falling for every German fighter until Escorts showed up.

@@kellyshistory306 The tail gunner had the best opportunities to shoot down enemy fighters compared to all the other gunner positions, regardless of what gun sights were used. The other positions had to deal with firing into the slipstream and a constantly changing target aspect whereas the tail gunner position usually had a fighter approaching from a more predictable attack angle with minimal aspect changes that required less adjustments for leading the target.
The top scoring USAAF gunner was a B-17 tail gunner, Michael Arooth, credited with aircraft 19 kills.

Not bad. Especially for a pre release build to an early access title. I'm just happy that in a few days I can play this game with less crashes and frustrating bugs (or at least in a few months, when it's fully finished)
As long it runs stable and the controller bindings are working better, than in the old game (sometimes bindings just didn't work, like switching from manual to auto mode), every thing else is a bonus and the fancy graphics and new features will come with the full sequel, so chill people :)
For the off chance the devs (or modders) read this, one QOL thing I'd love to see, would be a small indicator in the recon film, showing where north is, I'm pretty sure this info wouldn't be unrealistic to have, it's simple to implement (I would guess) and would help tremendously when planning the run or finding the target.

Two comments: first, the 3D rendered models seem to still be low-poly, and I hope they get updated to high-poly/high-definition models and no texture maps. Second, the new limited visibility of the gun sights is deviation from the original. Some may find them more accurate and prefer them, but others might find the original ones more playable and more fun. I hope they offer an option to choose between the two (limited visibility, but accurate/open view)

I don’t believe this version was ever supposed to knock it out of the park so to speak. They also said early access would only show interior improvements on aircraft.

I remember how we waited what seemed eons for the first iteration of this to come out, how we would be able to man the gun stations in multiplayer etc but the flying part was abysmal. It was more like a strategy game where the bombing run was the focus. The tracer zig zag at the time was very good I recall but this one didn’t appear to show this. Once Il2 came out there was nothing better for multiplayer. Only Microsoft’s pacific combat flight sim beat it in the eye candy dept, that was a great sim.
