    ABOUT THIS GAME
The missions undertaken by the crews of B-17 bombers during World War II are the stuff of legend. What was it to fly through relentless anti-aircraft fire over Nazi-occupied Europe? What was it to have a thin layer of steel between life and death at 15,000 feet? Furiously fend off enemy fighters zipping around your plane and then precisely deliver your cargo of bombs over enemy targets?
Find out for yourself as you lead a 10-men crew to victory... or defeat... against squadrons of Nazi warplanes in the legendary B-17 Flying Fortress!
A WWII Campaign to fight and survive through
Carry out a realistic 25-missions tour of duty based on historically accurate scenarios and targets, or Take to the skies in "Quick Start" assignments with available Instant Action mode. Plan real missions, select authentic flying formations, and manage both crews and bombers. Assess your crew's strengths and skills to effectively re-position members and cope with wounded personnel and casualties.
    It’s a 10-men job
Take to the skies in any one of ten B-17 Flying fortress crew positions: Pilot, Co-Pilot, Navigator, Bombadier/Chin Turret Gunner, Radio Operator, Engineer/Top Turret Gunner, Port Waist Gunner, Starboard Waist Gunner, Ball Gunner, and Tail Gunner! Take total control: Take-off, land, shoot from various crew positions, navigate across a realistically mapped Europe, operate the radio, line up the bomb run, release the bombs and bail out if necessary.
Choose your plane, choose your allegiance
Fly a variety of aircraft from the legendary B-17 to the rugged escort fighters - Choose between the American B-17G bomber, P-38 Lightning, P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, and the German Bf 109, Fw 190, and ME 262 fighters. Yes, you can even fight "The Mighty Eight" in the role of a German Luftwaffe pilot!
    Back from 2000!
This is the original MicroProse B-17 Flying Fortress: The Mighty 8th, the legendary sequel to B-17 Flying Fortress: World War II Bombers in Action. Fly the B-17 Flying Fortress and become a legend before your own time!

During the American Civil War, they gave out Medals of Honor like candy at Halloween, but by the First World War, the requirements where much higher. The fact that SSgt Willson remained at his post despite receiving a severe wound and shot down 6 enemy aircraft would defiantly qualify IRL.

He certainly deserved a medal, but he would probably not get a Medal of Honor IRL. That usually require some serious heroics.
A recipient have to "distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty."
Its the above and beyond part that is important. Shooting down 6 planes in one mission is no small feat, but is not above and beyond what you might expect from a good gunner, even though he was severely wounded but patched up.

Could also be 26 missions as the USAAF changed it to 26 in late 1944. Knew a navigator and radio operator of a B-24 that had that happen to them on their 18th mission, they thought oh just 7 more to go and we'er going home only to have that happen and it was 8 more, lets say neither was really happy about it.

Good start on C-Cup's campaign. Tail gunner got hit with a lot of flak shrapnel, but stayed at his post. You were lucky that AAA hit in the tail didn't destroy the empennage!!! Otherwise, a very good first mission. One thing occurs to me: with a narrow target area from the perspective of your approach vector, it might be better to have C-Cup's aim point be on the near edge rather than the middle. That way, the squadron's bomb dispersal will be more on target (?) Just a thought, Taff. Edit: You again have an outstanding tail gunner. His wounds were much more serious that was apparent, yet he stayed put, becoming an ace in a day!!!

It seems that it's best to place the bombsight crosshairs, at the edge of the target area, on the side you are approaching.
So that the bombs will play out from one side to the other.
Placing crosshairs in the center of the target area, means that half the target is now free from bombardment.

With the name of "C-Cup" you should put some armor on the nose of your B-17. IDK if this happened in reality but in the movie Memphis belle there was a B-17 with the same name which had it's nose blown off and assumed destroyed/crashed once it fell out of formation.

    Taff:
Since the AI bombers prefer to drop long sticks of bombs rather than dropping them all at once like you do, maybe you should change the way you aim and drop your bombs.
Suggest you drop long sticks as well, so you and your squadron are singing from the same hymn sheet.
Instead of aiming your bombsight crosshair at the centre of the target, aim at where you want the first bomb of the long stick to fall, on the edge of the target, and that should 'walk' the long sticks of bombs across the target.

what set up are you using? are you using a joystick? does this work on a modern computer? I owned this originally and it didn't work on my newer computer but that was years ago. Also the more you take over for your crew the better they get at their jobs so use your navigator often. it makes the bomb run path more accurate and bombing will be better.

It's more realistic this way. Merit promotions aren't common, and typically involve a new duty. You're not going to have your E-7 gunner promoted to an E-8 because he had a good mission. That would be weird. As for the Officers, it's the same deal.
