Hi, Chris, just saw the p-51 video, I'm glad you got your flight on 9-0-9 before she had her crash. From what I have been reading , The Collings Foundation has had a history of lack of maintenance. It's shocking how many of our precious B-17's have gone down in the last ten years. God Bless and stay well.

Thx for posting your footage. The crash was a horrible tragedy. I think it is so important and wonderful to have these old planes flying so generations can get even a small idea of the sacrifices that generation made. However, obviously something more needs to be done to ensure safety. I had the honor of flying on the 909 with my wife’s grandfather who had to jump out of one during WWII. It was a childhood’s dream that came true. RIP to those that died in the accident, nothing is 100% we take risks to live our dreams sometimes but too much failed with that scenario. The plane should have been sound before the flight.

07:09 The Pilot ( "Mac" McCauley ) .. For those who don't know, looks like he is wiping down the landing gears. He was the most experienced B-17 pilot ever. Unfortunately a series of bad practices and decisions led to the Oct. 2019 tragedy and the loss of 5 riders and 2 crew as well as the "9 o Nine" herself. I have flown in 3 similar B-17 aircraft . They where the most memorable & fun things I ever did. The first B-17 I ever flew on ( The Liberty Bell ) sadly burnt to the ground a few years later but all were safe. If you wonder what it's like to be inside of a B-17 while it's flying.. It's like being surrounded by a bunch of Harley's on steroids. It's glorious for us gear heads and aviation enthusiast ! But the risk in this case was far too high. R.I.P.

My father was a radio operator / tail gunner in a B-17! Fortunately he was about 125 lbs in those days, the tail Gunner spot is Tiny! The ball turret underneath was the most dangerous part of any mission! God bless every man they climbed in a B-17 to defend democracy for us today! We all owe a debt of gratitude!

I took that same ride in the 909 on August 15, 2015 from Gillespie Field in El Cajon, California. It was amazing!!! I have to give my father some credit as he was a tail gunner on the B-17 during WWII. How he survived is a mystery. Masters Of The Air was a awesome series to give us today some idea of how dangerous the missions over Germany really were. Unfortunately in October 2019 this aircraft crashed and was destroyed by fire.

I flew in the "Nine 0 Nine" in 1999 and your video sure brought back great memories. Back then, there were no GoPros or cellphone cameras to get the wonderful footage you did (I only had a disposable still camera with me). Like you, I sat right behind the pilots on takeoff, though there were no padded seats...just a seatbelt bolted to the fuselage. Since we were allowed to leave our 'seats' as soon as the wheels left the ground, I was able to scurry up to the nose before the plane cleared the runway...it was quite the view. We flew along with a B24 (the "Dragon and his Tail" if I remember correctly) and at one point the two planes were flying wingtip to wingtip. It was all pretty cool. Very sad the tragic fate of this B17 and the lives it took.

This hits close to home for me. Aviation has been a key interest of mine since my early adolescent days. I got my private pilot's license 2 days before graduating high school. At the Willow Run Airport (an hour's drive for me) the internationally known Yankee Air Force has an extensive collection of restored WW II aircraft (War birds). They're part of the non profit Yankee Air Museum. One of their aircraft is a fully restored and operational B-17, called the Yankee Lady. I've seen it fly a few times. Although I know longer fly for recreation the passion is still there. I've watched your video before but now it truly is part of many well documented videos which will forever be part of Nine-O-Nine's historical archive.

Hello, I was searching for videos about the Nine-O-Nine when I saw yours on the list. I really enjoyed watching your footage.
I've seen 909 twice; the second time with my son Joel but I/we couldn't afford to take a flight (so I confess that I'm a bit envious).
I've always been a fan of WWII planes and the B-17 Flying Fortress is my favorite one. I had hoped to get a replica of a B-17 to add to my collection but I hadn't decided which one I was going to get until I heard that 909 had crashed killing 7 people on Oct 2, 2019; which was very sad (R.I.P.). I decided that I wanted to honor it and the memory of those lost and so I got a 1/48 (25" wingspan) die-cast metal replica of 909 and had a custom made display case made for it that I could add a few images (with captions) that I'm going to arrange inside it and I was so impressed with some of the views you got that Ip think I may use a couple of screenshots from your video.
So, I wanted to thank you for sharing it.
I took a look at your RUclips profile because I was hoping to find out what your name was so that I could see if you might be on Facebook but it didn't say.
Please feel free to look me up if you'd like to say hello (I don't usually return to see if people have replied to my comments on RUclips but I do check my FB account regularly). I always enjoy talking with people who are interested in WWII.
    Thanks again
    Have a nice day

Nice video, I enjoyed watching it. I saw 909 in 2017 too; near Epply Airport in Omaha, NE. My son and I saw it together in a laugh of 2019. I wish I could have flown aboard her. Chances are slim that my wife will ever let me fly in a vintage plane after 909 crashed. R.I.P. to those who were lost (Sad irony considering the original 909 survived 140 missions during WW2 while being shot at with no crew casualties).
    Thanks again

I'd love to get to see a B-17 in person and even climb inside one. They're one of my top 3 favorite planes.

My dad flew B-17s, B-24s, B-25s, and a night fighter I don't know the designation for. All my time growing up he would have bad nightmares. I left home at 18 & he was still having them.

My great grandfather was a navigator. What a plane. I think he was on the B-17, but he might have been in the Lib.
