i am in my 30s, i drink for about 10 years heavily, but i started about when i was 5 or 6, every year i quit because i dont work on holidays, when i work i cant quit, because if i quit drinking i dont have strenght to do phisical work and everything is hurting me (my muscles and bones), i dont have breath, but if i drink, i can work 12 hours a day, isnt it strange? every day i can drink about 20 beers of 0.5 liters, or maybe liter of votka, or 3-4 liters of wine, when i was younger my and my friend drinked 5 beers in 15 minutes on lunch brake, and i eat about 1 kilo of sandwitch, when police stops me and give me alcotest, they cant belive it how much percentage of alcohol i have in my body, and i function as a normal person , one time they took me to hospital for check, and sister told me that she doesnt know why i dont show symptoms of drunkenes, i talked normally, i walked normally, i do everything normally, i was stoped by police because of failed headlights, also withdrawal symtoms are worst, i cant work for days when i quit, i only lay in bead like dead person, i want to quit because is is expensive and i dont need it

14 years sober, after I saw that I was turning into my alcoholic father, and that wasn't a future I wanted. The worst part, which I think this video doesn't touch on enough, is the peer pressure. The social changes are harder to deal with than any of the physical ones, imo.

I got drunk for the first time when I was 15. By 16, I started drinking more often. By 17, I began drinking almost every week, and sometimes daily. By 18, I was abusing alcohol all the time. By 17/18, I was able to drink a 15 pack of beer within the space of a few hours. On my 19th birthday, I sat on my grandmother's front porch and cracked open a 5th of Jim Beam at like 9 o'clock in the morning, and was drunk before noon.
My family would buy me alcohol until I could legally do it myself. That 5th I had on my 19th birthday? My grandma got that for me. I was getting drunk with my grandparents when I was 16. They even bought my old girlfriend alcohol when she was 15. I've been drinking for about 12 years, and I'm not even 30 yet. It's nothing for me to drink an entire 5th in a single night. I've done it before. In fact, I was reprimanded at work because I was drinking at work while on the job. I was going into the bathroom and drinking in the stalls and then going back to my station.
I've told people "I've drank more in 10 years than many of you will drink in your lifetime." I once stacked all of my empty beer cases up against my bedroom wall when living at my grandmother's, and the stack was almost covered an entire wall. I told someone "This is just from the last month and a half or so". I had consumed probably 300 or more beers in roughly 30 days. I've probably drank literally 10s of thousands of beers and spirits since I was 15. Have I ever gotten sober? Yes, I have. But I've fallen off the wagon as well. In 2020, I tried to get sober, and suffered terrible withdrawals. I laid in bed for roughly 30 hours in a cold sweat, shaking like a leaf and shivering.
My bed was soaked with sweat as my body tried to kick alcohol cold turkey. I didn't eat, and didn't leave my bed except to use the bathroom. It was awful. But I managed to stay sober for nearly 7 months before relapsing. I then made a 2nd go at sobriety, and in 2021 was sober for nearly 8 months before falling off the wagon again. My message to any of you who ever feel tempted to drink again is "DON'T. IT WILL NEVER BE WORTH IT." In fact, it may even be worse the next time around. I wish that I had never touched a bottle in my life. Sometimes what it takes from you cannot be taken back. If you EVER think about drinking again, remind yourself what it took from you. It will not ever be worth it.

Love how all of us alcoholics are drawn like a magnet to this video. I'll share a little too, why not. By the time I was 25, I went from drinking only while going out to blacking out every single night without exceptions. At 28, the only time I didn't have a drink in my hand was when I was at work. When sober my hands were shaking so badly I couldn't perform basic functions like brushing teeth, I couldn't form full sentences or even words, my brain had this weird pulsating twitch topped with extreme fogginess, if someone talked for more than few seconds I lost track, I couldn't eat or even swallow my own spit without throwing up when sober. And the psoriasis part hit home too, it got so bad even with treatment that my knees and shins looked like my skin was peeling off of them. The crazy thing is that somehow I was 100% it was just my depression. As I was getting closer to 30, drinking stopped working, no matter how much I drank I couldn't feel at ease, and THEN IT HIT ME, I realized I had a problem, the only solution left was to kill myself. When I turned 30 on Jul. 23, 2020 few weeks later I was living out of my car in my parents driveway, the only thing on my mind was to end it all, I thought it was too late, I was in pain 24/7, mental and physical, my eyes were yellowish, my resting heart rate was at 180 bpm, I was depressed and I was scared of being alive. Then on July 30, 2020, my mom woke me up by knocking on my car window and took me to straight to rehab. I wouldn't be here if not for my parents and everyone at Ashley Hope House! Even after all this, my mind still plays tricks on me from time to time telling me it's ok, but I know how to fight it this time!

My brother and I are alcoholics. I finally admitted to being an alcoholic after 2 dui convictions and loosing my stepfather to alcohol over 12 years ago. It has followed me and haunted my day to day life the past 12 years. 7 months ago after having another alcohol fueled black out and waking up in a church parking lot in the middle of the night I finally admitted to being an alcoholic and realized that I can't even have 1 drop of alcohol. I have been sober since and the 1st month was tough but gets easier over time. You need to get away from your friends and family that influence you to drink when you know you shouldn't. The reason I mentioned my brother who was 34 years old is because unfortunately he didn't want to stop drinking. 1 week ago he was walking down the street drunk because he was afraid of driving drunk and was hit by a car, he passed away from his injuries and it was all over nonsense. Our society makes it feel like it's normal to drink alcohol and even makes it look fun but the reality is that it's a drug that kills you slowly but surely. I lost my step-dad to alcohol and I lost my only brother to alcohol. If I allow it to it will kill me as well but I decided to stop it right there and to not allow myself to be consumed by alcohol any longer. You have to find a reason to live, even if it seems stupid to others. The simple fact is that when we came into this world we came alone and when we leave this world we leave alone. We are all on out own timeliness in life. Alcohol doesn't have to ve your end. There is life. If you read this chose life.
Update: Today marks 1 year sober for me. I still am able to maintain sobriety by reminding myself of why I choose to be sober and it's for myself and only myself. There seems to be little to almost no support for alcoholism but every corner, there is a bar, liquor store or restaurant ready to serve you alcohol. The hardest part so far is finding support when you need it, somedays are good and somedays are bad but find a reason to keep living even if it's so small because you owe it to yourself to love yourself. Thank you all for your comments it means so much to know that we are not alone in this quiet fight against alcohol. I hope everyone that reads this finds peace and forgive yourself if you fall for we are only human.

Aldo Moreno - Sorry to hear about your losses, thats the marketing and advertisement trick that alcohol company's used to brainwash people, they made it legal and facade that you cant have FUN without booze, and after a few hundred years of that, its everywhere. Alcohol fks with peoples lifes a 100 different small and big ways, they made it so addictive that its a war just trying to go sober for a few days. I had the same struggle with beers when i get bored. I started cutting back and hope to quit one day soon.

I drank a 3/4 of a bottle of whisky every night for 8 years, I tried for 2 years to desperately stop but never did more than 5 weeks before cracking. What got me sober, was finding a reason to be sober, I moved from my village, I met a girl, I changed my job, I found a life worth being sober after fully expecting to be dead by 30. It is possible, you will slip back to old habits. But remember if you're trying to go sober, remember HALT. Don't let yourself get hungry, angry, lonely or tired. You'll feel like you're going to die, but I promise you there's a life outside of your prison that's so much better than where you currently are.

I love reading everyone's experience with AUD, not because I think it's a good thing that they've experienced it, but because I'm happy to see that people want to change & not let this rule their life. So thank you to everyone who is sharing their story on here, it makes me feel like I have many companions on my own journey to sobriety. I've had failed attempts at sobriety, & it recently felt like my drinking was going to get worse after the unexpected passing of my grandmother & 2 weeks later, my precious dog who was my baby that I've had since I was in middle school, (I will be 30 this month, both grandma & my baby floof passed in July). I felt that I couldn't do it on my own so i seeked medical help, & decided that I should get on medication for both alcohol abuse & depression that was only made worse by the large amounts of red wine I drank almost every night. I've lost a lot of relationships both romantic & friendships, had a hard time with familial relationships because they only wanted what was best for me. Thank you again for this video as well! It was amazing!!!

I'm a 24 year old alcoholic. I started when I was 16 and kept drinking up until September of last year. My drinking was a factor in many bad things that happened in my life such as damaged relationships/friendships, depression/ anxiety, physical injuries, homicidal thoughts and violence, suicide attempts, felonies, misdemeanors, and unplanned pregnancies. Alcohol use is not a joke, you don't want to end up like me. If anybody is reading this, and drinks every day "your mental health" or "you'r childhood trauma" is not the problem it's the alcohol, and if you want all of your problems to go away you have to start by putting away that bottle first, or you can live in constant terror, bewilderment, and fear, continue harming others, and slowly lose your physical and mental health until you reach the point of no return, which is usually an institution or a coffin. God bless and I pray that you find a road to recovery 🙏 🙌 ❤

I gave up alcohol last month. I was never an alcoholic, but I definitely had an unhealthy relationship with it. The one thing I discovered is that it was a spiritual issue where I was feeling empty and dead inside and I was using that to temporarily fill that void, but it always made me feel more empty in the long run. After coming back to the Lord he convicted me and I started to realise it was a counterfeit for being filled with the Holy Spirit; the only thing that really makes you feel alive and complete. Best decision I made was giving it up. Lean into Jesus, he is the REASON for life 🔥🔥

One thing I've been surprised to discover as I've gotten older (just turned 28) is how crappy even moderate drinking can make you feel. It's not the same when you're 20 because you can pretty much do anything and still work the next day but even half a bottle of wine can leave you feeling cloudy and shitty when you've aged a bit. Alcohol, while I love it, really is a poison.

(The intense buzz) So you can have half a bottle of wine and then ride it out with coffee the rest of the night. It works for me. Thank you so much for letting people know that the medical/mental health community has changed terminology to “use disorders” and sometimes “difficulty regulating intake of alcohol.” The terms “alcoholic” and “addict” have such a negative connotation for the general public, and cause even more shame and fear around seeking treatment or telling family/friends that you need help. I know there are some groups (AA, in particular) that want people to identify yourself as “alcoholic” or “addict” and I wish that would be something that would stop. We are all just human beings, and some overuse different substances to cope with life…it doesn’t make you a bad person! Thank you also for explaining the physical phenomenon of stopping use of alcohol, in a way a lay person can understand, for the most part, and can help people understand why they are having uncomfortable symptoms and that it won’t last forever. PAWS (Post-Acute Withdrawl Syndrome) is something that can also be helpful for people to find because those symptoms can last for months to 2 years…and may be mystifying. This video is a great resource, thank you so much!

I’m on day 3,193 sober and what happened today is, I learned that softening the name of alcoholism worries me for the future. People calling me an alcoholic helped me see I was one. That’s what made consider and pursue sobriety. If someone had told me I had an alcohol use disorder, I’d just adjust my usage and probably keep drinking. Which wouldn’t not have been good for me. Call people drunks or alcoholics. It helped me.

Alcohol kills your liver, kidney, and stomach. Alcohol also increases your risk for cancer due to the sugar metabolism that feeds cancer cells in your body. To combat alcoholism; I resorted to eating a healthier diet with a lot of healthy sweet snacks like low carb pastry, candy, and other delicacy. I only drink alcohol once in a blue moon from now on. If I can do it; so can you. Also get a pet too since I put more of my attention on my two little puppies more than having the urge to drink a few gulp of alcohol.

@@2pugman Welp I was able to beat my alcoholism through sheer brute spiritual mental strength and some proper meds/herbs. I would chug liquor as water without any chaser back in the past whenever I feel the urge. Some of my buddies wonder how I beat my alcoholism. I used 60 percent mental strength to resist urges. The 40 percent was getting proper medications and herbal medicine to help my body resist the relapse since your organs do start having a dependency on alcohol effects. Alcoholism is sort of like a mental disorder along with a body chemical immune response to changes in the body. So what I did was replicate getting the buzz and *Feel Good mindset* from heavy alcohol through sweets like chocolate/candy/etc. It was tough at first; but chances of me getting diabetes faster was not as bad as a failed liver and kidneys. If you are weak minded; alcohol will dominate you.

@@robolasher A lot of factors came into play. First and foremost, if you don't have medical and mental health doctors start there. Talk to them and follow their advice. Depending on your needs and habits, start now by cutting your consumption with water. For example, every one pint is consumed with two pints of water. This will ensure that you spend more time running back and forth between the bathroom, than enjoying your beverage. In addition to weening your body from its addiction and making it slightly safer to quit. Make sure you make the time for rehab. Even just a few days, for me having that time of not being responsible for a job and a life made all the difference. Just like planning for a vacation, plan for rehab. Know ahead of time the first two years are likely going to be a white knuckled experience. The video covers it well, but I think it was a little light on the withdraw symptom time, delusions, paranoia, confusion, depression, it's a ride. The real difference comes two years later, after years of meditation, reflection and self forgiveness. Then you really start to feel healthy and happy in a way that I can not put into words. It is a life changing experience. Please, get a doctor, or better yet two doctors. Quitting can be very dangerous and life threatening. Not just from physical withdraw, but mental too. Be careful, plan with your doctors and go slow.

I quit drinking August 2021 and have never looked back. It hasn’t been a year yet, but I feel like it was one of the best decisions that I have made in my life. I actually feel alive and more connected to literally everything.
This video was great! I didn’t know there was so much research out there on alcohol and it’s effects on the brain. This video helps confirm a lot of changes that I have noticed with my brain since quitting. I feel like if we all reduced our drinking, even just a little bit, we could all live happier, and more peaceful lives in the long term.
Thanks again for making and sharing this! Peace out! ✌️

I also want to mention that I did not quit cold turkey, and initially my intentions were to just reduce my alcohol consumption to a drink a day. I started slow and eventually got there. I got to 1 drink and thought to myself… no drink for me today. And then the next day, the same thing. Then a week, month, etc. went by and here we are! Sober since August 2021! 😁👍 honestly feels like this is the happiest I’ve ever been in my life!

I lost my mother to alcohol so naturally a stayed away from it on top of my father being an alcoholic and most of my family members then one day I got really drunk by myself because of a stressful week and next thing you know I was binge drinking heavy every week Thursday-Sunday, got to a point to were I was drunk driving and constantly drinking pints and fifths with friends in the weekend till I realized it had happening for a year straight, after realizing I was at such a bad genetic predisposition for AUD I stopped 4 weeks ago, haven’t felt better about myself, this also after quitting smoking weed 4 months ago, and stopping occasional drug use 3 years ago, it’s been a hell of a road to sobriety but I’m glad I’m here

My stomach is wrecked and even my eyesight is permanently damaged. I want to stop drinking today but I have a job interview, I am sure I will fail it if I don't have a drink, I look and feel a mess, but will also fail it if I do drink due to maybe slurring smelling of alcohol. It is a living hell now but I am determined to stop. Enough is enough! I want my life back. Problem is, if I get the job and have to go through all of these symptoms I won't be able to function! - if I stop now and don't go for the interview I can't earn money. What a mess!

I’m 70 yrs old. A few years ago I was diagnosed with compensated liver cirrhosis or early stage cirrhosis. My MELD score is 7. This was most all do to alcohol. Also fatty liver disease probably contributed to it. My MELD score will never get better but can get worse, if I continued to drink. The liver can regenerate itself but not with the scarring cirrhosis causes. I was lucky in that, I never experienced the withdrawal problems associated with this video. Basically the specialist spelled it out for me. He asked how much longer I wanted to live? Obviously I said as long as I can in good health. He than explained what would happen to me if I continued to drink even lightly. He said I might live another 3 years before before I needed a liver transplant. Don’t plan on getting another liver at age 72 or over. You won’t qualify. He also described each stage of cirrhosis and the suffering I would endure. Needless to say, I quit cold turkey that day. On a whim before I left, I asked him about NA non alcohol beer and wine. He said that was fine to consume. I never had a problem quitting. I found surprisingly that the NA non alcohol beverage category has improved greatly. I now have a couple of NA beers before dinner and a glass of NA wine during dinner. In my case, the substitution has been hugely successful for me. I don’t miss alcohol in the least. This was a very stagnant category at one time. However our population is aging and the beverage companies recognize this. There is even NA liquor like gin and bourbon. I urge you to give it a try. What do you have to lose? Only downside is I really haven’t lost any weight with the substitution. Now I have to work on eating right and exercising more. Good Luck to all of you!

I started Ozempic for weight loss (50 BMI - ugh...) on Tuesday and stopped alcohol (cuts hundreds of calories from my diet) after drinking 6 to 10 ounces of tequila a night for YEARS. It's only been 2 nights, but it's not as bad as I thought. I am certainly cranky and thought about alcohol both evenings, but this may be my last chance to lose weight and keep it off. My experience for what it's worth: I was never a big drinker, but I found I was getting severe mood swings when I drank, together with waking up at 3 in the morning with my heart pounding. I haven't had a single drink now for well over a year. Immediately when I quit, I started feeling better, then after 2 weeks or so, I felt better still, now I feel really amazing! Clear headed, sharper, no mood swings, no disrupted sleep... I feel so good, I'm NEVER drinking again. Looking back, I never really enjoyed it, just enjoyed the social aspect. There was the usual social pressure at first to drink again, but now people understand I don't and value the fact they always have someone sober who can drive...

Firstly alcohol is legal and not everyone has a problem with it. Most of the people I know don’t have a problem with it. It’s always something that happens to “other” people, people like me, who have no “self control”. It would never happen to “Them” because they are not bad people and let’s face it, no one wants to be told they’re doing something wrong. I hardly eat any animal products, but I don’t go around informing my friends that it’s wrong to eat pigs, lol. Everyone knows that cigarettes and heroin are bad for you, lol. Even though cigarettes are legal, they and heroin can only be tolerated once you’re addicted to them, so there’s no need for a judgement, if that makes sense. Incidentally, I wish you well, I just did x5 weeks alcohol free, then drank myself into a blackout last night. My tolerance has plummeted. I’m back on the proverbial wagon. Edit, I sound very jaded, reading this back. Don’t give up hope, I hope you find a way, sending love ❤️💕🌞

If you're struggling to quit just remember to keep trying and don't hate yourself if you fall off the wagon as this generally leads to drinking more again. You might make a mistake, you might fall and have to start again but if you keep trying you'll get there.

Im 40 and drank half a bottle of whiskey every day for a couple years but I stopped. One year and 4 months not a drop of alcohol. It was rough but once you make the mental decision, the rest works it's self out.

Easy half a bottle isn't that much and a doing it for a couple of years won't hurt from 38 to 40 while you're young and fit.
I wondered why my blood's was coming back ok after a lifetime of drinking and recently 64 units a day. Police and hospital said it's because I'm young, and fit, just wait till mid 40s it will catch up with you .
It was heroin which put me in hospital due to renal failure but after time blood's came back ok

Were you able to do it cold turkey? Did you use any medications or supplements to help you quit?
Congratulations on your sobriety. I’ve been drinking a half bottle a day since about June. I need to stop but man do I get anxious and it tends to make me drink more.
I’m going to try to lay out a bit of a taper plan so it’s not so hellacious. The booze makes me feel good, but makes me lazy as hell. I’m normally super productive until 12-1 am. Now I go to bed half drunk at like 9-10 barely getting shit done.
A shot or 2 just to take the edge Off is where it all started. But I have to take everything from 0-90 quickly. If a little makes me feel good, more will make me feel better. Just one more sip on the bottle...,

Thanks for making this video. It may just be the little nudge to get someone to change their habits.

Made a decision two days ago - to quit alcohol for good, since It's affecting my life negatively. I am at the beginning of my journey - two days of sobriety!

I gave up over 11 years ago. One of the best things I have ever done. Giving up involved nasty symptoms - shaking, sweating. Fortunately a doctor helped.

At least three of my close relatives had alcohol-related deaths before the age of 70. Knowing how dependencies tend to run in my family, I decided to never even try it. It felt like a mistake throughout my teens (I'm from *that* part of Europe) as drinking was just the way people socialised, but now in my twenties, I'm relieved to say it has been one of the best decisions of my life so far, as you easily go to a bar and socialise with people without drinking and not be judged, and you can sometimes even be the most qualified person to help less sober people, so don't be afraid of your social life disappearing just because you quit alcohol.

I was the same as you, and for more or less the same reasons, until I got to 26, then I succumbed to peer pressure and tried alcohol, allowing myself half a pint of cider if I was out on a night out with colleagues. Now at 38 I drink regularly, and a box of 10 cans of cider barely gets me drunk anymore, so i either have to get stronger cider or more cans in order to get the same effect, but at the same time I have to drink 'enough' each weekend to stay in control of my alcohol needs otherwise I wouldn't get halfway through the next week without having an unwanted 'drinking episode' which could affect my employability. I feel like I'm in a catch-22 now, as I'm suspected of having an ASD, and thus don't make friends very easily, and the ones I do have now were made whilst drinking, and only really know 'drunk me', so I'm not sure they'd hang around if I stopped drinking and was always boring 'sober me'. Basically, if staying teetotal is still working for you now then please stick with it if you can.

Lucky them. Dying before 70 sounds like an attractive prospect these days. I might start taking up drinking after all.

Thank you for this video. I was in the hospital yesterday because my withdraws were so bad I was having panic attacks. My body head to toe went numb and tingly and my chest tightened. I called 911 and it took a matter of minutes for the professionals to diagnose the issue and issue a proper treatment. My previous comment was made before I realized I had a problem and I discouraged the use of benzos. The ones they gave me to level me out have been extremely helpful. It's only day 2 of sobriety and I'm putting all of my will power twords not drinking. I've never felt so close to dying. If you need help don't be afraid to seek it. I have had 3 open heart surgeries and I'd rather have my chest split open again than go thru the withdraw symptoms. Let that be a lesson for us all. I watched my father struggle with the same thing and didn't understand until now how powerful of a grip it holds on your body and mind.
I was always the guy who said oh that will never happen to me. Here I am and here begins a new chapter of a happy and healthy future. Wish me luck and good luck to anyone in the boat with me.
