@@DanK123 Agreed. Shooting the first part under-exposed so the people and aircraft are basically in silhouette provides some beautiful shots. it feels like this was done for two reasons - the backlighting emphasises the power and size of the machines, and two, so the reheat flames are properly exposed without changing how everything else is exposed. The second (Danger Zone) part is edited together brilliantly to give a sense of the controlled chaos of the fight deck. I'd love to know how they went about capturing the crew so perfectly. Did they spend a lot of time on the ship observing the crew and planned their shots accordingly, or did they shoot a lot of 'B-roll' footage & extract the shots they wanted. Either way, the end result is superb!

Best part for me was the deck hand throwing an excited kick out there when the f14 catches the arresting gear. He knows his job is awesome/fun and hes havin a blast out there bringing those planes in. Epic scene.
He must be the most famous unknown man in the world. He literally say of course you know who I am, Im the yellow guy throwing a kick in the opening scene of Top Gun and people will say, " Oh ya! I thought I knew you from somewhere.
it actually took me until 35 years later watching this movie for the first time that in this intro, a small storyline plays out, the theme being "messed up first time, nailed it second time through regroup and teamwork". at 3:03 a Tomcat comes in for a landing and it is a real ugly pancake, the airframe bouncing, struts flexing, cables snapping messily across the deck. The landing signal team looks astonished, as all their heads turn: "we all messed up on that one". Then a crewman puts a hand on a shoulder as to say "that sucked, but let's run it back better." Now for redemption at 3:13: the black crewman with his pointing gesture readies the team's focus on the incoming Tomcat, which hits the wire clean, pulls to a smart stop, and the iconic kick declares it a success.

Being a military brat, I might be biased ^-^
As one who actually sat in the theater as a teenager and saw _Top Gun_ when it was first released, I can say, unequivocally, that this film (as well as it's opening scene) left an indelible mark on the minds of many young people of my generation. I can probably name no fewer than ten young men and women with whom I attended high school (and likely, many more) who would cite this opening sequence as the primary impetus for their decision to enlist in the military.

I couldn't agree with you more sir. The F-14 Tomcat was just an awesome looking jet fighter, for me the most beautiful jet fighter in the world of all time.

When I was a kid, the F-14 was THE fighter aircraft of the 80s. My dad was in the USAF, we were stationed at AFBs with F-15s and F-4s...but nothing could compare to the outright aggressive and fearsome look of the F-14 Tomcat. Top Gun immortalized this great airplane for an entire generation of aviation enthusiasts worldwide :)
There's something I've always loved about the guy at 3:18. He's enjoying this job. He has a little moment of celebration that it was a successful land. There was always that guy in every unit. Completely competent, fully capable of doing his job but loved to have a good time.
I was always mesmerised by the way the scene starts with the deck crew appearing through smoke and fog, the silhouettes of men and aircraft slowly taking shape, the slow music building up until the F-14 launch and Kenny Loggins kicks in.
Glad you enjoyed the scene. But it’s actually steam escaping from the steam catapults that send the planes to 0-120mph + 20 knots over deck speed in less about 3 seconds. Invented by the British but only the US builds them, being replaced by electro magnetic catapults that are far more expensive and needs humongous electric power.
@@ferrarirocherchocolateballz16 while I will not disagree with you oh dark lord, the F-14 is not the most iconic fighter of all time; she is the most iconic JET fighter of all time.
My dad was an aircraft technician for the French Army. I was born the year Top Gun got released. I got pictures of me as a 4yo kid wearing a pilots helmet way too big for my little head while watching Top Gun and pretending to be Maverick. I grew up with sounds of aircraft motors, smell of kerosene and a neverending love for aviation, for human beings who are able to push the limits to the extreme, for great pioneers who are ready to sacrifice themselves to go beyond. Fast forward to 2022, seeing Top Gun Maverick as a grown up 37 years old had me crushed into tears in a matter of seconds.
The intro of this film gets me everytime. I can only imagine the pure adrenaline rush one may get from witnessing an F-14 tomcat entering and taking off from the flight deck. The view of endless ocean at sunset. The SOUND of a jet engine generating enormous thrust. Even the guy at 3:22 doing that leg shimmy once the cables have hooked. You can tell he loves his job! There can't be anything else in the world as exciting as this. I'd give up everything to do stuff like this for a living and be enthusiastic about what I do, being a part of something great. God bless the US Navy 🇺🇸🚢⚓
That name was crew member is so iconic he he is part of the movie 2 in a big way ,. part of the confident American cultural missile explosion that this movie was
Anyone watching films in the 80s knows this intro, a film dedicated to showing how revered US fighter pilots are amongst their countrymen. Lots of perfect storms in the making of the film, the subject, the cast, the score, all these things contributed to making it one of the most iconic films of the 80s era and to this current day. Pure Gold. 🤩
My 2 son's and I love that movie so much! My youngest followed his brother's footsteps by going into the Marine Corps, and I'll never forget one of the phone calls to me... He said "Mom!!! This is just like Top Gun!!! It's so cool!!!" . He was 2 years old when the movie came out and he had to watch it at least every other day. When it came out on VHS we of course bought a few because the constant playing of it would wear it out. DVD was awesome, same thing. In the early days of BluRay, he bought it just so that he could watch Top Gun. It really inspired him and I'm so proud of both of my son's, who still currently are serving our country in The United States Marine Corps. I love them both so much! My oldest son loved the movie too but not to the extreme of his brother. 13 days after 9/11, my oldest son was on the bus to Parris Island. So in between the attack and on his way to boot camp, he was amazingly doing so much in such a short time period to join the Marine Corps and be on that bus 13 days later, which was Sept 24th. I am the proudest mother in the world to have my children want to go out and want to serve and protect our country. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I was 16 when I first saw Top Gun in 1986, since then TG was like the theme of my life, i listened to the soundtrack on the weekends with family, dance the music in parties with friends, played TG nintendo game all night, listened to TG anthem for inspiration when im depressed and feeling down. Today I am 52. We watched TG maverick yesterday here in The woodlands, Texas with my wife and 3 kids. When the movie intro played, my 27 yr old said “pops its the same intro!” and DAMN.. the experience was so unreal.. like I time traveled 36 yrs back! it was pure pure nostalgia, goosebumps all over, i felt like 16 again! the movie brought a childs awe and smile on my face and i was teary eyed at the end.. TG maverick exceeded my expectations! Its as good as the first TG, I will watch again! so anyway.. after watchin the movie on my way home i was slamming my nissan armadas gas pedal like flying an F16 tomcat 😄Thank you so much! its just priceless 😍
What you said. I don't give a damn what anyone thinks, I've this a zillion times, starting with its original theatrical run, and I still get goosebumps.
As an aircraft mechanic of 8 years now. This scene always gets me, I obviously haven’t worked on a carrier but it still holds the same value of seeing that aircraft you work on when there’s a red ball and you fixing that problem let’s that jet take off and complete its mission
You certainly wouldn't use the audio from this particular upload as there is very little audio volume to drive any decent system. My earbuds (Very efficient) were just audible. There are much superior recordings on RUclips that you can use!
We Japanese also like this movie. I am grateful to the Self-Defense Force and the US Army for protecting us. The new movie "Maverick" was also very impressed. I work in an emergency hospital, and watching this movie gave me courage. Thank you for Top Gun. And Tom Cruise.🇺🇸🇯🇵
More like 1 in every 2000 even has a chance at getting into the cockpit. IIRC there are less then 3000 active USN pilots at any given moment. Meanwhile obviously, there's a couple hundred thousand non-pilots in the USN.
Who didn’t want to be a fighter pilot after watching this. I can still watch it today and love every minute of it. Best opening and song ever and little old mate doing the kick brought so much joy to people lol
Love this opening, probably the best of any movie. The calm melody building up to the roar of those engines, then as soon as those F14's are catapulted off the ship... Danger Zone kicks in!
I remember heading DIRECTLY to the Air Force recruiter after seeing the movie for the 3rd time and So Stoked.... Thankfully the recruiter was honest with me. He said if you want to join the forces then sign up.... But, if you want to FLY.... Join the NAVY!!! Yes Sir! 😁👍
I served in the Navy for 4 yrs. Was an LSE (Landing Signalman Enlisted) onboard my ship. All we had was helicopters but it was still a dangerous job. The landing on a carrier is basically a "controlled crash landing". Fantastic movie that I still watch over and over again.
Watched Top Gun in the cinema at 14 with my friends after school. This is the most memorable opening scene next to Star Wars Episode IV. We were going wow, F-14 Tomcat! Wow! Afterburner! And when the plane shot off the deck to Danger Zone, we went bat shit crazy. Some adults cheered too! What an awesome childhood. We had our mouths agape almost throughout the movie and went home on a drugged up like daze.
Great movie ! Was a fleet sailor at San Diego In 1975-77 and while on WESTPAC did a lot of plane guard for the carriers......as well as UNREPING from them. The F-14s were beautiful aircraft ....a ringside seat !
Still one of the great film openings, and practically worth the price of the movie all by itself. Some of the great truths of film are that either A) beautiful cinematography or B) the skillful use of a soundtrack can make any movie seem twice as good as it is. Whatever failings the critics found in it, "Top Gun" had them both in spades.
The best opening scene. So classic and love the sound of jet engines with radio calls in the back. This movie made america so proud that everybody wants to be American citizens
And back in the day there was no or little CGI. Also as well as the 1980s and 1990s having loads of amazing movies with real stunts and practical effects, the 1970s was a great decade for some proper groundbreaking movies - some of which are still relevant today. And back then no movie looked as though it was shot on a Go Pro.
Libs Hate Montesquieu dude is CGI existed back then the movies would be exactly the same it has literally nothing to do with political views you’re just looking for a place to spew bullshit
The second best opening to a movie. When I saw this at the movies when it came out, I didn't know what to expect. A slow gentle introduction,,,then I was accelerated at warp speed into heaven!
No one who hasn't even had the privilege of standing in one of the observation areas to watch, much less actually been one of the dozens of young men working the flight deck during these operations, can appreciate the sounds, smells, nerve racking anticipation, dangers and thrills of carrier flight deck operations. These sailors have chosen duties performing the tasks involved in one of the top 5 most dangerous jobs on the planet.
I went on a friends and family cruise (they used to call it a dependents cruise) on the John C Stennis and you are not kidding. God what an experience!
It's called a "Tiger" cruise. I have been on a couple. My step father was a Navy pilot, so whenever one came up we usually went. Long time ago though. But I will never forget the sounds and smell and the feeling whenever one of these awesome machines were catapulted off the deck. And the night op's were even better with the afterburners all you could see on the flight deck from the bridge. Some of the greatest experiences of my life.
Love the cinematography of this movie... the choice to film these scenes with a low sun (2:39 look at the sun glint off that metal bird in the dim, mysterious light). One of the best movies of all time.
A legendary opening scene I remember seeing this when I was 16 years old I rode my bike to the theater. And as a side note my dad was in the Navy he was on the destroyer USS Buchanan in the early 60’s.

戦闘機が好きな友達が、オープニングだけでお腹いっぱいになったと絶賛した映画でした。
戦闘機好きじゃなかったけど、感動したのを思い出しました。
I was always mesmerised by the way the scene starts with the deck crew appearing through smoke and fog, the silhouettes of men and aircraft slowly taking shape, the slow music building up until the F-14 launch and Kenny Loggins kicks in.
Glad you enjoyed the scene. But it’s actually steam escaping from the steam catapults that send the planes to 0-120mph + 20 knots over deck speed in less about 3 seconds. Invented by the British but only the US builds them, being replaced by electro magnetic catapults that are far more expensive and needs humongous electric power.
the real star of this film is the grumman f-14 tomcat

Even though she's retired, the F-14 Tomcat is still one of the most badass planes ever made.
She was like a dancer, and the sky was her stage. The F14 is the most iconic Fighter the US Navy has ever produced and used.
@@ferrarirocherchocolateballz16 while I will not disagree with you oh dark lord, the F-14 is not the most iconic fighter of all time; she is the most iconic JET fighter of all time.
@Sigma0283 I like your style

Epic
I think this scene was filmed at dawn.
That name was crew member is so iconic he he is part of the movie 2 in a big way ,. part of the confident American cultural missile explosion that this movie was
The propaganda movie still does its job, yup
I imagine back then there were like 10,000 swabbies telling people in bars "Yeah, that was me in that scene."
Amen
🎉😊
Thanks Marine Mom from A Navy Gold Star mom!
Stop putting an apostrophe in the word 'sons'. It's annoying.

Thank you. I will let both of my sons know that you sent a really nice message to them! Very kind of you.
Ironic. In recent years America exclusively terrorized small countries in the middle east. I wouldn’t call that „serving your country“

I've watched this movie LITERALLY hundreds of times and this opening gives me chills to this very day. 😆
The opening theme is the shit 🔥 when you got some subs and hella bass shakes the house lol 😂
Its as good as the first TG, I will watch again! so anyway.. after watchin the movie on my way home i was slamming my nissan armadas gas pedal like flying an F16 tomcat 😄Thank you so much! its just priceless 😍
the best opening to any film ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
y agree🌺
What you said. I don't give a damn what anyone thinks, I've this a zillion times, starting with its original theatrical run, and I still get goosebumps.
The only two opening scenes/credits that give me goosebumps is this and Watchmen. I'm an old comics fan so what can I say?
Conan the Barbarian has a epic intro too
Yep
Best opening theme for any movie ever. Felt so awesome when the top gun maverick started exactly like this.
That transition in music and filming between "calm before the storm" and "pure rage" is simply amazing.
Very well put!! The slow burn of this opening is epic. It took me a few years to really get it.
Kudos to Top Gun Maverick for reusing this opening. Such a masterpiece; I wasn't even close to being this elated when I was watching Endgame.
Having served in the Navy aboard a carrier this opening put me right back on that ship.
Yes I know what it's like it is awesome how everybody does there job 2 make this happen
Probably the coolest and most exciting opening to any movie ever made.
BRAVO ZULU
Rozer boogy that's right! Zulu tango right! Enemy flight is your 3miles forward!

P&W TF-30s.

Beautiful, ain’t it???
Hairs on my neck are always on end at this point. Such a cool sound!
As an aircraft mechanic of 8 years now. This scene always gets me, I obviously haven’t worked on a carrier but it still holds the same value of seeing that aircraft you work on when there’s a red ball and you fixing that problem let’s that jet take off and complete its mission
GOD, I LOVED THIS MOVIE!! I MISS THE 80S!!
Glenn Reiley 80s was the damn best time of my life.
Top Gun-2
I was praying they didn't touch this iconic intro for the sequel. They didn't disappoint.
I haven't met one person that doesn't use this first 5 minutes of a movie to test their home theatre system when it's finished.
Add another one to your list!
You certainly wouldn't use the audio from this particular upload as there is very little audio volume to drive any decent system. My earbuds (Very efficient) were just audible. There are much superior recordings on RUclips that you can use!
Throne room scene from "Star Wars" is also a nice way to test a high-end home theater system!
Or the opening to Castaway (Tom Hanks)
You bastard NOW i got to buy a home theater system!
Thus begins the greatest United States Navy recruiting video of all time....
(and it was **awesome**)
From what I gather, RN Fleet Air Arm my side of the Pond as well...
I heard for every 500 or so who applied maybe 1 became jet jocks?
More like 1 in every 2000 even has a chance at getting into the cockpit.
IIRC there are less then 3000 active USN pilots at any given moment. Meanwhile obviously, there's a couple hundred thousand non-pilots in the USN.
Navy recruiting did go up after this movie --- but most of them ended up being assholes stuck on a ship --- BORING
And just 5-6,000 men on a ship, they are needed! Though from what I hear the new ships being built carry fewer crew.
This is by far the best opening sequence in modern cinema history. Brings a tear to my eyes every..single..time.
🎯
Best movie opening ever😎! Gives me chills every time I watch it. So far no other movie has ever been able to compete with this epic opening 🤷♀️
I cry of emotion. Great masterpiece movie and music
戦争は大嫌いだけどこの世の中にこんなにカッコいい世界が有るなんて信じられない。
Who didn’t want to be a fighter pilot after watching this. I can still watch it today and love every minute of it. Best opening and song ever and little old mate doing the kick brought so much joy to people lol

Love this opening, probably the best of any movie. The calm melody building up to the roar of those engines, then as soon as those F14's are catapulted off the ship... Danger Zone kicks in!
Some of the best four minutes ever put on film, never gets old
解る!!( ´∀`)b❤
TOPGUN-MAVERICK really start like this, and even the navy platform scene is still the same.
This give me chills & goosebumps
I saw this on the big screen yesterday. What an experience. The theatrical experience cannot be equaled.
I remember heading DIRECTLY to the Air Force recruiter after seeing the movie for the 3rd time and So Stoked.... Thankfully the recruiter was honest with me. He said if you want to join the forces then sign up.... But, if you want to FLY.... Join the NAVY!!! Yes Sir! 😁👍
Still gives me the chills!!! Isn't nostalgia a beautiful thing.
The amount of people who became actual fighter pilots because of this movie is honestly incredible 👌👌
33 years and this is still Badass AF. Also so stoked for Maverick
Let’s hear it for Harold Faltermeyer! Brilliant composer who has created some of the most iconic musical memories in film, including this one.
何年たっても、このOPが最高です!
OMG! Can I just say, thank you 80's. The BEST years of my life. This movie takes me straight back to high school days. Wow....
I served in the Navy for 4 yrs. Was an LSE (Landing Signalman Enlisted) onboard my ship. All we had was helicopters but it was still a dangerous job. The landing on a carrier is basically a "controlled crash landing". Fantastic movie that I still watch over and over again.

Agree 100%. If we could only go back.
Every time a new trailer for top gun 2 comes out I return to this. It's like a warm blanket. Returning to my childhood.
So happy they did this again for top gun maverick. Executed perfectly
なんか船の上で作業してる人たちがもの凄くカッコいい!!!合図みたいなん出してるの!!!

Great movie !
Was a fleet sailor at San Diego In 1975-77 and while on WESTPAC did a lot of plane guard for the carriers......as well as UNREPING from them.
The F-14s were beautiful aircraft ....a ringside seat !
Thank you for your services to the USA while in the United States Navy.
I was on the Independence (CV-62) from Aug of 82-Dec of 85. Yep, it was an experience, especially Flight Ops. 😎😜👍
Nearly shat myself when I saw the intro to top gun maverick was a tribute to this opening, I cried tears of joy and felt like I was in a time machine
A generation of navy pilots were created by this one scene.
There were recruiters in the theater entrance when I went to see it! Table set up and everything!!!!
Yeah. Maybe a generation. But there was a generation before. Fly Navy.
@@gregslav6755 nice sounds were there people enlisting after the movie lol
Lol more than 1 generation... probably what is saving the aviation community now..
Aviators, pilots fly for the air force and commercial.
Best opening in cinematic history, no other movie comes close, no other movie had such a great opening.
That transition from the score to Danger Score is perfect in both the original and Maverick.
I wonder why
The best opening scene. So classic and love the sound of jet engines with radio calls in the back. This movie made america so proud that everybody wants to be American citizens
Seriously, movies from the 80/90s were so much better than the over digitalized and rehashed crap we see today.
So was the Pussy Son ;).......................................
mondoudou. That is because pansies who get offended by everything and people who have no imagination work the movies.
No they aren’t
Libs Hate Montesquieu dude is CGI existed back then the movies would be exactly the same it has literally nothing to do with political views you’re just looking for a place to spew bullshit
I think I've seen this movie 1000 times and the beginning still never gets old. Great job on the audio..
Best cinematic intro of all time. You are literally LAUNCHED into the movie.

The second best opening to a movie. When I saw this at the movies when it came out, I didn't know what to expect. A slow gentle introduction,,,then I was accelerated at warp speed into heaven!
yes like chef driv8bg
So far I’ve saw the latest one twice! Going for a third this coming Thursday! Keeping the nostalgia alive to the 10th power!
So your still a Virgin then?..........................................

An opening sequence so good that the sequel paid the perfect homage to it with a near perfect replica/update.

Hell yeah, even with Super Bugs and F-35’s this can’t be topped. Still fantastic to see this recreated in Maverick!
Love the cinematography of this movie... the choice to film these scenes with a low sun (2:39 look at the sun glint off that metal bird in the dim, mysterious light). One of the best movies of all time.
