  • After buying and using the m3 max for over a month I decided to downgrade and get a m1 max instead. Was it a huge mistake? In this video I show what it's like to use each computer while video editing, gaming, and just in everyday usage. The m3 max costs a lot of money so before you take the plunge and buy it, this video will help you decide if it's worth spending the extra bucks OR if yesterdays tech might just be good enough for you.
    Thanks for watching!
    FYI this M1 Max has 10/32 cores with 32gb ram and a 1tb hard drive.
    The M3 has 16/40 cores with 48gb ram and a 1tb hard drive.

    I decided to go with the M1 max chip version also! The price tag DOES make a big difference for me. I'm a small business owner, so having the M3 Max price tag be so astronomical without proven performance difference, I decided that buying a new M1 max was the way to go for me. When there is a big difference, I'll invest in a better model. Thanks so much for helping me make this decision based on your experience and for sharing that with everyone! This is why the internet is so great!

      Alternative thought process for going for M3 version now is to think about the future years when M1 version would slow down considerably earlier than M3 thus making M3 durable/usable for more time.
      Comparing the performance in the present would obviously make it overkill with that price now but if wanting the device to last some good years, it's always advisable to go for newer versions.

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  6 месяцев назад +4

      @@PritishBharti I know what you are saying for sure... I think that Apple crushed it with the Silicon chip though, and based on what we know now, the M1 stuff is still great. AI will be a thing in the near future but we have no clue how it will be implemented into future apps and tech. The price jump between the m1 and m3 is significant, especially based on our current software and needs. So there's no point (for us) to buy something that may or may not be useful in the future but not anymore useful right now.

      When you mention the new M1 Max, are you referring to used ones? Do you know if it's possible to buy them new? I am aware that refurbished ones are available from Apple, but my question is whether you are purchasing them from the black market or ice. Sell My Mac or Amazon, but I'm not sure if that's the best option. Also, I don't think there are many new M1 Max models available unless someone had a large overstock a long time ago.

      Hey! You know, you could get by using the M3 Pro... it's fine. It's good. But it's not great. You will hit a bottleneck if/when you start to expand your skills and want try new things like layering videos etc. I think it's worth the extra money if you are serious about video editing, absolutely. Hey man, please help me, I've been using windows my entire life, but revently got into a business that requires video editing not too many effects though (just couple of visual layers and text and perhaps music and dialogue), and I am using premiere pro.
    So which one should I go for M2 Max? Or is the M3 pro good enough

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  5 месяцев назад +1

      I mean the Pro is good enough... the Max has extra encoders on there and it does make a difference when you're working on multiple 4k clips. The Pro can get by though, especially if you make proxies.
      I'd take a look on the used market... see if you can pick up an older Max that still has AppleCare maybe? If not, check the refurbed section on the Apple store. Just make sure you bump up the ram to 32 if you decide on the M3 Pro. The one I bought only had 18gb ram and it definitely felt like it had bottlenecks while video editing... I don't know if that was from the ram or the less encoders on the chip.

      Yes I noticed this too. So incredibly disengenuine they just do what gets the views. Apple silicon can NOT handle massive effects without dropping frames or needing to turn on proxy / lower res timeline. It just can't. Even the Max. and I don't have a studio but I'm guessing it applies to it as well.
      I originally had an M1 Air and while it can edit videos it was extremely limited with effects.... So i said screw it i'll get the best Max you can buy. To my surprise, while yes it was faster than the air, only barely for effects like magic mask. Like less than 10 frames per sec difference in speed.
      It's pretty damn sad, because all the youtubers lead you to believe Apple Silicon is amazing for video editing and can't be beat and is the best thing for a creative to have. How? A 5 year old windows machine with a 3070 can smoke it considerably?
      anyways. I've since purchased a windows laptop with 4090 so i'll be doing some crazy comparisons. I suspect the windows laptop smokes it in every possible way relating to editing. But we will see.

      @@sotonin I'd be interested to hear how your comparison goes. This video may be of interest to you: ruclips.net/video/PzY0sSjGl5s/видео.htmlsi=U9tSQj_wWoOz8Fnt
      The Windows machine with a 4090 will no doubt be faster for most GPU intensive tasks, but bear in mind that some common codecs on an Intel/NVidia systems may not have the hardware acceleration that Apple Silicon provides. 10-bit H.264 seems a bit hit and miss depending on the system you have. H.265/HEVC seems to be better supported. Not sure about ProRes / BRAW etc, but it is definitely advisable to find some real-world examples that use *exactly* the same hardware/software combinations and workflows that you intend to use before jumping into any given system.

    • @sotonin
      @sotonin 11 дней назад

      @@johngwheeler I have not done any indepth comparisons yet. but I can tell you that the 4090 smokes all apple silicon on magic mask. It's actually usable on the windows PC.
      basic stuff like cutting and skipping around through footage also works perfectly smooth comparable to any of my apple silicon machines. I only have a few video cameras though so no fancy codecs. just H264
      in summary, the windows machine beats out my M1 air and M1 Pro Max machine handily without any stress or downsides (so far)

      They would be pretty similar in performance I imagine. I will say I feel like the M3 line has a much better battery life but it has less video in court orders so it will be worse for normal video editing. To be honest if I was going to edit with a lot of VFX and effects I don't think I would get either of them. That's the one area where I found them to be pretty weak. You could use smart rendering but then your probably want an external hard drive.

  • @johngwheeler
    @johngwheeler 12 дней назад +1

    I've watched your series of M1 vs M3 Max videos and found them to be very thorough and educational - great job!
    What seems apparent is that for the *majority* of editing tasks there isn't any significant advantage to the M3 Max, and that for those tasks that do stress the machines, they *both* fail to play back in real-time - just to differing degrees. This *could* be a big deal to some people if they spend so much time doing heavy-weight tasks that a 20-30% improvement equates would have a big impact on their throughput, but for a lot of people waiting "a few seconds longer" for an effect to render is not a big deal at all, particularly if you're not working to a deadline or being paid by the hour.
    In any case, the various optimisation options that are available in Resolve may make the difference a moot point.
    Watching these videos has most definitely removed my sense of FOMO at "only" having a entry level M1 Max....it's still a great machine that could last me for years.

Crazily enough I'm in the process of building a PC specifically for video editing and a bit of gaming and the M1 Max is still competing and beating the big machine in certain areas. While it is always nice to have the latest tech, the M1 is just so easy to recommend for the price.

    I would recommend trying Final Cut Pro or an application that is optimized for silicon on MacOS. Rosetta is going to be a non-starter for video or motion graphics in anything. And honestly, a lot of third-party apps, including Adobe’s suite, require you to go in and change the settings to allow for using the M3 Max as a GPU or VRAM, and up the available memory for them since the unified memory system often requires you to allow for higher than minimum required memory settings. Since it’s still early, I would always research how to optimize the application for Apple Silicon so that you can take advantage of the power it has on board, particularly unified memory. Most physical GPU cards have realistically between 8-24GB if you’re lucky, but more if you’re shelling out more. So if the settings are by default set to using 8GB of available GPU memory, but you maxed out on 128GB of unified memory, you’re limiting yourself unless you take advantage of that massive memory bank.

      @@thesahdstudio regarding photo editing demands vs the range of video demands per project or scenario: Imagine starting with a 100Mp camera file such as my fuji gfx, then a shot requiring multiple exposures for a range of light and/or capturing a person or object here and there over time to create something that didn't exist all at the same moment. it's at 5-15 image file layers now before any applied adjustment layers.
      Next consider it's a stitched panorama, even if only 3 wide for overlap, the working file is now 45 x 100 Mp plus all the adjustment layers, it's getting into the several Gb file size by now. RAM is important but so is the GPU when you go to use a filter such as Topaz sharpen or Gigapixel.
      To me, the 128 RAM alone is enough urge to rerplace my M1 max 64Gb with an M3 max 128 Gb, plus the GPU.

    The M3 Max doe have more cores than the M1 Max especially GPU scores so being slightly faster makes sense. I was going to get a M3 Max but would of had to go with less RAM and onboard storage, I found a refurbished M1 Max and saved money and got the full amount of RAM and storage I wanted. My only regret is I bought a 14" Macbook Pro and my old eyes running Ableton Live the screen is small, so I am looking into trading it in for a 16" or maybe just go with an external monitor.
    You want to get more out of your setup do as I would do when I worked as a SysAdmin designing and building servers, dedicate it to the task and do nothing else on it. So stop running games and other stuff at the same time, get a second computer to be your non-work computer for internet, gaming, and all your day to day usage. Leave your most power computer setup to do work only. I got into working that way when I was a computer programmer and a place I work gave us two computers one for all our programming work and a second for doing email and other office tasks on.

    M1 Max vs M3 Max? I can get an M1 Max 64/2TB 10/32 cores for $2100 and an M3 Max 36/1TB 14/30 cores for $2750. I don't care about the RAM and storage, since both are plenty coming from 8/256. I have a video editing and programming workflow. Is it worth the extra $650? What are all the differences that you have observed? I can list a few from the top of my head that might be worth to me, like 2 more efficiency cores, 1 more year of updates, Wifi 6E, BT 5.3, but I would like to hear from someone who has used both. What do you suggest?

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  5 месяцев назад +1

      It really depends on how you use the computer. For ME with video editing as my main use, it was not worth that extra money for the M3. That's a phone or Watch/Headphones combo worth of savings right there. The only real difference was the battery life, and even still the M1 Max is so good. The M3 Max was just incredible. Other than that in my day to day use I couldn't even notice a difference. Like you said the newer tech is nice but not something that is noticeable to me.
      I would be mindful of the ram and storage though especially if you plan on keeping it for years. The way Mac's can use the SSD as Virtual Memory if they don't have ram is something to consider but yeah, probably not a huge issue for most of us.

I mean not just noisy, but annoyingly hard... So eventually last week I bought the M3 Max with 4 tb ssd and 96RAM. 7000,00 euros.... Guess what? Not impressed and still render times in between projects and even during a simple Blend file I hear the fans where I don't hear the same ones on the M1 max. So I am done with thinking a laptop can handle easily a program like Blender. On not even too complex animations. Or I am doing something terribly wrong in Blender. But to whoever wanbts to go from the M1 max to the M3... I think it's not worth it!

      I'm kind of in the same boat is you... in fact I'm back to considering building a desktop. Having a capable laptop is nice but there's only so much you can really do on portable power...
