Got one at harbor freight, three holes through bathroom tile wall, false readings no studs. (sensed above tile through dry wall, still no joy.... don't trust it. Tried it with ply wood wall open on one side only found two of five studs, hit or miss, brand new batteries. I am going craftsman..
Make sure you have the unit on the wall before pressing the button. My experience is that people press the button too soon - which gives false readings.

I run mine along the wall n nothing something is up. If i hold it away the light go on n do stuff but when right against the wall nothing.
I bought this and drilled 3 holes In a freshly painted wall and still couldn't find the stud!!!!
