at the end he knew the psychiatrist was testing him by acting as chuck again and leonardo acted like he didn't changed so that he could get killed because he doesn't want to live with what he has done...and thats why he said "which would be worse, to live as a monster or die as a good man?"

When Leonardo realizes his children are dead in the lake is so heart-wrenching. His yelp is so primal like a wild banshee is so intense. That is beyond acting. He makes you feel like his whole world collapsed at that moment. Plus the director uses a great overhead shot to give the desperation needed for the scene. Great writing, acting, and directing. Great movie.

Well said man! Leonardo's heart and soul are always so visible, it makes for much more of a deep immersive and real feeling experience. He's one of my favorite actors alive among many but his roles always stand out so much. Really love him in The Departed too along with this, the performances are just outstanding

"Shutter island" is a masterpiece! The last seconds say everything about the hero and once again turn the plot around: Andrew came to his senses, remembered the moment of the murder, but now he doesn't want to live with it like a "monster", and deliberately goes to a lobotomy ("to die as a good man"). And his psychiatrist realized this when he called him in alarm. Every time I get goosebumps these seconds.

At the end Leonardo DiCaprio didn't reset. He wanted to die like a good man that he was, the man that he knew he was finally. He didn't want to end up resetting at some point and then living like a monster so he chose to die like a good man.

Was looking for this comment! I feel like a lot of people overlook the final line of the film: ‘which would be worse: to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?’ He hasn’t regressed. He’s chosen his fate based on knowing he just can’t - and can never ever - live in his reality. It’s makes the film that much more tragic.
This film is so great because of the depth of the characters but I’ve often felt like people misinterpret Delores as well. She was just so so mentally sick. But I’ve seen that a lot of people just say that she’s ‘evil’. I don’t agree. She was incredibly unwell, which led to her actions. In turn, Andrew ended up being so mentally scarred that he was never himself again. In a way, the whole family died that day at the lake.

    • @Andruthless
      @Andruthless 2 года назад

Maybe I'm misreading your comment but that's not right. He wasnt worried about resetting. He knew he couldnt live with himself after finding out he killed his wife and caused the death of his children. The "monster" is him in reality, that's why he made up a false reality for 2 years. Like he said he can't take know that he killed his children cause he didn't get his wife the help she needed. He would rather die than face the monster he is in reality.

Dillion you speak of mental illness at the end. The issue often times is that most people think they can solve the problem themselves. Leonardo taught he could handle his wife, until she killed the kids. On the other end, even if you know the person has a problem and you seek to get them help, they may not accept the help or be ready to accept the help. It's such a tricky tricky tricky situation. In addition minorities are traditionally reluctant to seek help. So it's a very complicated situation seeking, asking and accepting mental help.

    • @salvadoroars
      @salvadoroars 2 года назад +3

People need to understand too that before, it wasn't that open if you have mental condition not just because of the stigma but because of the fear of getting detained for the slightest symptoms. That's why it's very important that we learn more about these things.

Thank you for reacting to one of my all-time personal favourite psychological horror drama films which is a rarity of Martin Scorsese to direct given his high profile for Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino and recently Killers of the Flower Moon.
It took me 3 times to watch the film to see the signs that Teddy Daniels/Andrew Laeddis (cool fictional character names) is not who we thought he is. At the end of the film, his last words “What could be much worse in this place: live as a monster or die as a good man” is an indicator that Laeddis opted out for the “lighthouse icepick” due to the fact he got to the point of no longer handling the trauma of killing his wife for killing his kids and not wanting to regress restarting the entire cutting-edge roleplay all over again.
As much as I know that it was all a roleplay: I loved the scene of Dr Rachel Solando in the cave, got a feeling it’s real (yet Dr Cawley brushed it off as fake hallucinations in Laeddis’ mind) as I could see this play a role in the plot of a continuation miniseries that I call “Escape From Shutter Island”.
No matter if he was thinking of something in the past that’s true or not - the US army liberation of Dachau (among the early Nazi campsites to appear in the Holocaust) resulted in the soldiers and surviving Holocaust prisoners participated in a revenge killing (execution squad-esque) on the camp guards except those who faced the music in the criminal courts. It did happen in our world.
An investigation conducted by US army Lieutenant-colonel Joseph Whittaker was suppressed by US army general George Patton and a Bavaria governor to cover up what Laeddis described as “not warfare but murder [on both sides]”. I do believe Laeddis’ involvement in the Dachau liberation and revenge killings was true.

That last line. "Which is worse, living as a monster or dying a good man?" That line has always lingered with me. A coherent man not being able to live with the fact he is all alone could say that. Even coherent, he still blamed himself. So, did he die a coherent man or not.

The only name given to him by the asylum was “Rachel solando”
      Dolores was his wife
Daniel’s was who he believed he was, the identity he created and believed he was.
Laeddis was the man he believed killed his wife in a fire.
The hospital didn’t create Teddy Daniel’s because they were trying hard to convince him teddy wasn’t real.
He obviously knew his wife’s name.

The only way for the hospital to have given those names to him and for him to believe them to be nis own name, his wife’s and his super’s would be if he was somehow brainwashed by the hospital into thinking he’s teddy Daniels, his wife is Dolores channal and she was killed in a fire by a man called Andrew Laeddis.
This could only happen before the movie begins at the boat scene. Which would only be possible if he was at the hospital before the movie started, which means his version of reality is wrong and he’s crazy.

    • @jimmy2k4o
      @jimmy2k4o 2 года назад

Case 39 is a fine horror movie but it’s not really comparable with this.
This is a psychological thriller with a higher emphasis on drama and tragedy.
For example this movie has no villain or even an antagonist.
In a sense the closest thing to an antagonist is Andrew laeddis or Teddy Daniels, with the other one being a protagonist.
This movie is on a whole other level than case 39.
This is a near masterpiece, case 39 is kinda generic plot, elevated by the good cast and good performances.
But that Bee scene was pretty bad, it would have been better if you saw Bradley cooper walk to the bathroom, you see a single bee follow him then end the scene.
Cut to Renee finding out he was killed by hundreds of bee stings, you can even show his body. But the cgi bees were dreadful and that made Bradley’s acting very cringe. Maybe not his fault, maybe he was good but the bees make it Impossible to believe the performance.
Case 39 had great pacing, good somewhat original villain, okey ending…..
Shutter island was damn near flawless and practically every scene is great.

The parents the do that Sorta thing the way she did it, are insane.
You can’t hold them responsible for their actions at a moral level.
To commit a crime your criminal action either had to have criminal intention or wilful negligence. She arguably had neither. But you could make the case that Andrew had committed child endangerment by leaving them in the care of somebody he knew to be suicidal, psychotic and dangerous to the people around her.
He knew she burned down the apartment building trying to kill herself. that shows she’s suicidal and dangerously reckless with the lives of others. He knew she would talk about how she had ‘insects inside her head’ etc. That shows she’s psychotic.
He could (probably would) be charged with 3 counts of negligent homicide, while his wife would be declared insane and sent to an asylum. Where she could be released one day if the state is satisfied she’s recovered.
Negligent homicide is negligence that leads to somebody’s death.
He was negligent with his wife’s mental health, and when he left his kids In her care he was negligent with their safety.
But he had a traumatic psychotic break and killed his wife, so he was not guilty of his wife’s murder. But he is still liable for the deaths of his kids, because that crime occurred before the traumatic event that caused his insanity.

Did you act this way when watching movie with your friends?
If so, have any of them watched a 2nd movie with you?
You’re over-reacting to the point it seems less than genuine…..
And you talk a lot, you don’t need to tell us how you’re feeling and ask loads of questions out loud.
We can see your feelings on your face and eyes especially….
Most of your questions are answered in the movie. The rest, you should make a list and talk about them after the movie is done.
We watch these videos to empathise with somebody who’s seeing this movie for the first time, it’s harder to do that when you’re presenting a show of you watching a movie rather than just watching the movie.
Edit: your reaction to the twist is more genuine, and I no longer doubt this is the first time you’re seeing this movie.
I also must give you credit for predicting the twist early. Yes you were trying hard to and made many theories most of which were wrong. But you did get the right answer.
And as the movie progressed you showed less suspicion of the doctors and guards and more suspicion about Leo’s character.
And you were smart enough to accept the obviousness of the ending.
People actually try and argue that he’s really Teddy Daniels and ashecliff has convinced him he’s crazy, not many but some people . More people argue that the movie doesn’t give you a clear answer and it’s left ambiguous, the agnostics, those people are mostly just being pretentious/indecisive.
You predicted and accepted and most important, understood it, on a human level. Like you were mature enough to see the Teddy is andrew explanation is not as unrealistic or far fetched it is might appear to some.
