the rock as well as moanas voice actress are both singing themselves
Moana has not only the best CGI of water in Disney but they made Dwayne "The Rock" sing/rap his character's signature song.
Made him? I dont think the rock would pass up a chance to sing and goof around.

It was changed to Vaiana in many languages, mostly because both character leads have names started with "M" and it is easier to remember names when first letters are different.

Indeed - not to mention that Auli'i Cravalho was 14 when she was hired for the role and 15 when she recorded most of the songs. Her vocal performances are brilliant by any measure, but for someone that young I think they're utterly mind-blowing.
As someone who works with survivors of trauma and abuse, the scene at the end where she's talking to TeKa and says " I know your name / They have stolen the heart from inside you, but this is not who you are / You know who you are, who you truly are." I cry. This is for anyone who has had a piece of them stolen by someone who did not deserve it.
45:37 - One aspect of this movie's story which was and is kind-of revolutionary in terms of Disney movies is that when the spirit of Moana's grandmother appears at the point all hope seems lost, she confesses that it was completely unfair of her to put the responsibility of succeeding in the quest on the shoulders of a child. No previous entry in the Disney animated canon has ever dealt with the morality of family expectations, and it is a thing of beauty.
Another amazing thing - when compared to other Disney stuff - is that Moana is not only a respected member of her community and the future CHIEF, but also that she is 1) comfortable with her role in her community, and 2) she's an explorer. How many other female Disney characters were such innovators? And most important of all, she faces Te-Ka - the """"villain"""" - unarmed and full of compassion and understanding. An act that requires much more courage than facing an enemy with a sword and a shield.
You spend all your time trying to guess what's next, let them tell the story. They spent millions, it's a great story, full of island mythology. Love your reactions.

Is he watching the European version named VAIANA? The girl's name is moana but in Europe they changed the title and her name because MOANA is a registered trademark there and the name of an adult star.
In thé french version it's Vaïana
I think he's in Spain, so it would make sense. When he watched Zootopia, the name of the city was changed to Zootropolis.
He's living in Spain, so he's basically watching the Spanish version but with the English voices.
I find it so funny that you keep saying “the rock” in relation to the heart, but Maui is also portrayed by the rock lmao

I love how her grandmother doesn't blame her for her short comings and instead apologizes about the burden she put on her plus says she can go home if she wants to. I honestly loved the grandmother so much lmao
Edit: Also love Te Fiti and Te Ka. Volcanic rock is actually a great booster for soil so life like plants and such can grow with nutrients. So when Te Ka was revealed to be Te Fiti, my env science little heart was like OHMYGOD and when Te Ka transformed to Te Fiti I was so excited coz it makes sense that with life comes destruction all the time!
all of the voice actors for the characters sang their own parts! so yes the Rock actually sang this :)
The chief didn't. Voice was Temuera Morrison, singing voice was Christopher Jackson.

@@darkanise - The long-standing bromance between Lin-Manuel and Chris Jackson is all kinds of endearing - Lin has frequently stated to Chris during panels and interviews "If I've got a job, you've got a job".

If you like the music, you should check out Hamilton and In the Heights. They're musicals done by Lin Manuel Miranda, the composer for this movie.
THIS^^ i will always suggest lin’s music to those who portray an interest in music because of the pure soul and detail he puts into the songs he writes, particularly in hamilton; he is incredible.
As much as I love Lin-Manuel, "Hamilton" and "In the Heights", I'm going to be really presumptuous and point out (as I suspect Lin-Manuel would too) that for this movie he was one of three songwriters and composers along with Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina - and while the amount of input each of them had varied depending on the song or score, the process was very much collaborative.

Disney made a point to get actors of Pacific Island heritage for the major cast - Dwayne Johnson is Samoan, Auli'i Cravalho and Nicole Scherzinger are of Native Hawaiian descent, and Jermaine Clement and Temuera Morrison are from New Zealand
It was making me crazy, hearing you mix up Moana's name and Maui's. It wasn't until late in the reaction that I remembered (I know, I know) that you're Australian and that Moana's name was "Vaiana" in your version.
The word "Moana" actually means ocean, and the alternative title meant to preserve that (I read that it translates to "water cave"), but trademarks and - seriously - a well known porn star that went by "Moana" in Italy had Disney looking for a different title.
I think you were also messed up on the timelines. The Polynesians did have a really impressive history of voyaging (it truly was called "wayfinding"), but they stopped for about a thousand years and no one knows why. So in theory, Moana's ancestors voyaged to Motonui way back then, and sometime after, Maui stole the heart of Te Fiti. So Moana's Grandma Tala is one of the few people who is still telling the tales of her past, but she's considered crazy and the stories are considered fiction. Moana's journey is reviving the older practices.
And I know you already looked up info on the Rock singing, but the voice actor for Moana was a 14-15 year old girl called Auli'i Cravalho. She did both the speaking and singing, and she was amazing. (Shout out to Jemaine Clement for doing a hell of a David Bowie impression on "Shiny," too.)

Moana is one of my fave movies! I highly recommend “Brother Bear” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”

If you are Pacific Island or Mori then you know all about who Maui is, he’s talked about a lot in New Zealand as well, we learnt about him and his amazing skills and stories in primary school!

trademark issues
Like the user above said, it's a trademark issue. I think there's a company in some parts of Europe or something (and other places) that uses the name "Moana", so yeah.
Moana was the name of an Italian Adult actress, hence the trademark. And they didn't want children google "Moana" and get to the wrong websites not really suited for kids.

Unlikely. In Finding Nemo, Crush says he's "150, dude, and still young". If we are to assume that Finding Nemo takes place the year it was released (that being 2003), then Crush couldn't have even been born any earlier than 1853, which is *way* after the precolonial era of Polynesian history that Moana takes place in.

The name is Vaiana in his country’s version. You can see it in the subtitles. Some countries got Moana, some got Vaiana.
Te Fiti wasn't based on Maui, pretty sure it's based on Tahiti
