This has got to be one of my favourite Disney films now!! I just loved how healthy the way some of the characters treated each other were and how much heart is at the core of this story. Exactly what I hope for when I watch a Disney film. Enjoy :)

One of the coolest details about this movie is that it is inspired by a real (and so far unexplained) event: People from Polynesia had been sailing the ocean and populating Islands for a while and then they just... stopped. It's not that no-one knows, its that we can never be certain. It was most likely simply natural climate shift, the transition from La Nina to sustained El Nino in the South Pacific rendering ancient ships useless. There are of course other theories relating to the culture shifts between isolated islands, lack of materials, e.t.c but the changing climate making it far more difficult for ancient peoples to navigate the ocean is the most likely explanation and there is some evidence to support this. @@saiyasha848

The ocean needed Moana to be the one to take the heart to Te Fiti because it wasn't about returning the heart to Te Fiti. It was about restoring the heart of Te Fiti. When Moana asks the ocean to let Te Fiti come to her, when she walks to Te Fiti unarmored and unarmed, she is telling Te Fiti that she trusts Te Fiti not 5o hurt her, that she knows Te Fiti is not a monster; that Te Fiti has had something terrible done to her, that she has been dediled and violated but that, beneath the rage and grief and pain, she is still a good being, that she is still Te Fiti.

Interesting fact: the real Maui from Polynesian folklore did do all those things Maui sings about in You Welcome, but he did it not for narcissistic reasons but because out of his many siblings he was the only one not born with godly powers and was thus excluded by his brothers from coming along on their fishing trips. So Maui did all those things to prove himself to his brothers and parents.

As someone from New Zealand who grew up with Maori/Polynesian culture, the small and thoughtful details in this movie blew me away. The use of native Polynesian actors and talent, the various Poly languages used throughout, the bits and pieces of this culture and that woven together to make Moana’s version. Maui himself is a real demigod for many (if not all?) of the Polynesian cultures and his tattoos/feats from “You’re Welcome” are literally myths and legends of his that I grew up with. The island he pulled from the sea is the creation legend of New Zealand! Our South Island was his canoe (waka), and the North Island is the stingray he fished up (Te Ika-a-Maui, The Fish of Maui).

little fun fact to go off the last bit: manta rays aren't mantas. they were first believed to be, but more recent discoveries and research show that they are actually mobula rays (I think it's mobula, it's something in that line) it has to do with whether the mouth is underneath or in the front, but since they've been called mantas for so long, they will most likely have the same situation as one of the prehistoric sea mammals that got called a reptile and when they found out it was a mammal it was too late and the name couldn't be changed. I can't remember the name of it, but people still call it a dinosaur because of it, even tho it wasn't.
edit: I spent wayy too long trying to find this again, but i just had to say, I looked it up, and I THINK it's the lystrosaurus. ima have to go look through some videos from lindsay nikole to be 100% sure

Casting Notes Fact: Despite playing her grandmother, Rachel House is only 29 years older than Auli'i Carvahlo.
Smoldering Intensity Fact: When Moana first meets Maui, he cocks his eyebrow in a strange way. This is called the "People's Eyebrow" move, Dwayne Johnson's signature move from his wrestling career.
Voice Play Fact: The villager who suggests cooking Heihei is voiced by Alan Tudyk, who also provides Heihei's vocal effects. Moana (2016) was the first Disney film dubbed into Maori. The Maori version is available in Australia and New Zealand, as well as on Disney Plus.
Historical Facts: According to archaeological evidence, the exploration of Western Polynesia proceeded rapidly until about 900 BC, stopped suddenly for over 1,000 years, then resumed just as suddenly, with all of Eastern Polynesia colonized within a few centuries. Several plausible explanations exist, but the exact cause of the "Long Pause" remains a mystery.
Mythology Fact: The spiral on Moana's (Auli'i Cravalho) necklace and on the sail of her boat is called a koru. It represents the unfurling fern frond, symbolizing new life, new beginnings, personal growth, hope, a new start, perfection, rebirth, awakening, purity, the spirit of rejuvenation and peace. As a double spiral, it also symbolizes kinship and belonging.

Top theory is that moana and her ancestors are all decendents of te feti but only some have any of her power. Moanas grandmother had te feti's connection to nature and was seen as an outcast for it. She also transormed or ascended once she passed away into the creature she felt the closest connection with.
Moana was choosen by the ocean at a very young age because of the power she recieved from te feti and the top theory is that when moana left her island, the ocean sent the storm and during that storm moana actually died and became a demi god. This would explain why she awoke on demi god island, had the strength to topple maoi's statue, survive the fall into the realm of monsters, have visions, fight a demon and connect with a god.

The common sentiment is, "Why didn't the Ocean just do most of this itself? It clearly seems like it could have at least done a lot more to help her, if not just returned the Heart itself." I think the whole point was that because the heart was stolen by/for humans, the intention was that humans should have to be the ones to do it and prove that the world shouldn't be destroyed: that there's hope for humanity being good and worthy, or something along those lines. I think Tefiti herself had to see a human coming all that way and being selfless and compassionate before she was going to allow her heart to be given back to her like that. While it was clear that she _wanted_ it back, I suspect that as an angry monster, turned that way by her pain and hatred, she wouldn't have truly been able to absorb her heart back into herself: that because it's an obvious metaphor for her trauma, the only way she was ever going to be able to get it back was by seeing that people can be good, too, and allowing that hope and optimism to open hear heart again and reconnect with it. The damage could finally start to heal. Plus, as much as the Ocean likely wanted to help her, it was clear that they couldn't touch without it hurting her, and turning her to stone. If it had tried to place the heart back in her chest, her chest would have hardened and physically prevented the Heart from entering. It needed a human touch, and it needed to find a human who wouldn't shrink away from her or see her as a monster and try to defeat her, rather than help her heal.

I feel like I should add that this whole thing was started by humans wanting to have the power of the gods, so Moana using the power of the Ocean to cheat would have looked bad. I think the Ocean recognized that she really had to earn it on her own, or this was never gonna work, and Humanity was just gonna go right back to expecting the gods to help them with everything and do everything for them.

I love Moana's development, but Maui's personal growth was amazing. From being such a vain, self-absorbed, borderline narcissistic demigod to becoming a kind-hearted and loving friend and mentor is awesome, plus hearing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson sing is pretty damn badass. I love how they cast Nicole Scherzinger (lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls) as Moana's mother.

The thing I love most about this movie is that the villain isn't some Evil Witch or anything. She's... a traumatised victim who had her heart stolen, lashing out at anyone who might hurt her again. And the solution wasn't to defeat her by fighting, but to show empathy and compassion, reminder her of who she is, and give her heart back. It's such a powerful message of healing through therapy and community, and such a departure from more common tropes where the villain is defeated by violence.

one of my favorite soundtracks if not the favorite from a disney movie - all songs are great and the fact the whole cast has Polynesian/Maori roots so its lore accuarte is just fantastic. But what do you expect when Lin-Manuel Miranda is part of things? Exactly this- perfection!!

Moana is my favorite Disney movie. The songs are so good, the story so relatable. Even if there is magic in it, it doesnt make it so impossible for us to relate even to Maui. By the way, Maui is an actual demi god. Te Feti when she sleeps and became an island was inspired by Mount Otemanu in the Bora Bora islands.

The ocean is alive, and it was calling to Moana, but also chastising her for trying to go out past the reef unprepared. It helps her where it can, but it can't do everything for her. It can't return the heart of Te Fiti, because it's Maui and humanity's burden to bear.

This movie was my late ex’s favorite movie, and I remember seeing this with her back in the theatre with a college friend of ours. We’d always compared ourselves to Moana and Maui. She even named her dog Hei Hei after the chicken. I can still recall when we went to an aquarium and got to watch the dolphins. I’d like to think that would’ve been her spirit animal. 👩🏻‍🦱🧔🏻‍♀️💚🐷🐔🌊

One thing I find interesting (and that I didn’t notice until SuperCarlinBrothers pointed it out in one if there videos) is that the ocean puts Moana through two tests before she goes on her quest
Test 1) keep the shell, or save the turtle?
Test 2) how do you respond to failure?
And according to a theory they had, her father was put through the same tests, but failed the second one

This is hands down my favorite disney movie. I’m more of a ghibli gal but Moana is amazing. It has the cultural appreciation and backstory so many disney movies lack and while it is a “princess movie”, the princess is the strong leader in her own right, her character does not revolve around the love pf a man. This movie focuses more on themes of family and love for others in general, not romantic love. I wish I had still been a little girl when I got to watch this.

As someone who grew up on the ocean for the most part of my childhood (my father was a sea captain), so i definitely feel this "personal connection" whenever i see the ocean, too, like I'm seeing a past life of mine since most of those memories are faded. 15:00 well I KNOW what you're saying.. probably way more than some actually..
When I hear that line I just burst into tears.. like I don't tear up during the scene or anything nothing just leads to it I just hear it and burst into tears right away.. just like I did rn and every time really..
This movie resonates with me for that specific thing.. her relation with her grandma..
I used to live with mine basically since I was born, it was us 2 against everything up until she left before my 20s birthday.. Now 6 years later and it's like it was yesterday.. the whole never fades the pain is so fresh nothing heals such thing.. you only learn how to deal with it an co-exist with it..
I leant to feel her in every thing around me, everything she loved, everything we shared, our memories and habits and it's like she's all around now❤
I'm still living in our house I could never leave it❤
So this sentence she says always hits home.. I FEEL it to my bones, I'm living it. 🙂❤
This is so precious to me to re-watch it with you I was so happy seeing the notification! I usually don't revisit it on my own.😅
    Great reaction😊❤

Few catch it...but there IS an actual reason the Ocean itself can't put the heart back. Because Te Ka boils it away as soon as they touch. And Te Ka won't let it anywhere near because touching water hurts it.
It couldn't go to Maui directly because Maui won't cooperate.
Moana herself isn't necessarily a particular "chosen one," but the Ocean needed someone capable and willing.
Grandma was clearly willing...but far too old. Dad was capable, but unwilling. Mom might've been willing, but not capable. Most of the other people on the island also fall into that range somewhere.
Moana ended up being the only one that WANTED to go, AND was reasonably able to do so. She's not special, per se...just...convenient.
Normally, however, such stories are pretty much just "Gods are evil jerks and do fuck all, while some absurdly and inexplicably special mortal is somehow the good guy." (and, said mortal is also still usually an asshole)
