To be fair to Steel his response was no different to may other people's at the time - football managers for example. Children weren't listened to and when they were convictions in court were actually rare. Society tried for many years to ignore the issue - even now it seems we don't know what we should do about it.
Everybody knew about Smith and just joked about it all the time .

Just because children of poor were not peddled, doesn't mean they weren't abused. It happened on an epic scale. It did happen to the working class for kicks, mainly from men to girls.
My stepmother abused her position in my family. Screwed my head right up. Here today at 64 years old I'm still affected. And, as seems to be the way, no one believed me. I left my family circle 42 years ago. My children have a whole side of family that isn't in their lives and therefore become victims too in a way. It's so hard to deal with this stuff in your life.

Two detectives had investigated Cyril Smith and found him to be guilty of sexual acts towards minors. During one interview Smith was said to have been more concerned at what his mother would think once his case came out.
Instead of Smith going through the procedure to face trial the two detectives were taken off the case and to their shock had had their note books taken off them despite the fact that their note books were not finished and would also be needed in any subsequent case if Smith were brought before a court.
Why were the two detectives removed from the investigation and why and or where are their note books and any other paper work associated with the Smith investigation .
The case against Smith was dropped without any logical reason and the two officers were ‘moved’ on without any logical explanation.

Actually, he was present at many occasions, which could be called "posh" or had guest lists including VIPS and high-profile public figures. The stories he used to tell us - usually when he spotted someone on the TV, or heard his/her voice on the radio - would make your toes curl.
Seriously, I could repeat the tales he told us and point the finger at many who are now sadly, passed away or retired from "public life".
Not many are really fully aware of the level of Satanism in "high society" and how it is rife among the people that we are told we should respect.....
And none will be accountable.

I hope I am wrong but you look at the percentage of priests and vicars that abuse children, it's way above abusers in the general population. And the Church very rarely reports its own to the Police, instead they just move them to another diocese where they can start anew!

Not everyone who has been abused as a child goes on to continue the tragic cycle. Some people do the very hard work of healing and have innate awareness and internal knowing that you don't abuse someone else just because you were.

This is just too sad. I am so glad that I was raised by respectable working class parents in a similar community. I was thankfully unaware of such heinous acts throughout my own childhood.
It is wrong to abuse children. It is wrong to abuse or bully.
The thing is abuse received as a child is very difficult to heal because that is when people are at their most vulnerable. and as we developed in to adults that abuse becomes ingrained in to our nature. Also abuse received from your parents is even more , if not impossible to heal. Humans also spend a much larger percentage of their lives as children than other mammals, so there is more chance of abuse happening.
So bloody cruel. You never really get over it. That's just my opinion. Maybe in some they actually do. I find it's something I just have to live with when it's memory time after time.

Makes me think of that family that went holidaying with their friends and young children in Portugal not so long ago... It's like an Agatha Christie novel - they were ALL guilty of something, perhaps.
SA is bad but also physical violence and psychological abuse is also very damaging. I've met a lot of men who were psychologically abused by their mother. A child has no defence against a mother who is so inclined. That is why single mothers pose such a threat to their sons. There is no relief because the father is not around and often the mother takes out her frustration with men on her son, especially if the reason she got pregnant was to bind the man to her and it did'nt work out.
Just bloody awful. It breaks my heart to know any child goes through this horror, boy or girl by mother or father . So evil sick haters. Poor little children! I would die for them no doubt. I'd do life for them.

It’s like England left rich kids and poor kids vulnerable cuz they didn’t raise their own kids. They sent them to birding school or put them into service if a lot of kids. If the poor people got to the US, it was all about their kids having this or that. And you knew you were taking every opportunity to take lessons that were free or go to school. All of these things that were upper class or considered so, by 1st generation and their kids who were children of servants in the US and grew up witness to $$$. So as the grandkid, you took advantage of everything. I’m sure if you lived with your parents, you’d disagree. My nana got put on the boat in 1920 as the elder of 13 kids. Not sure she thought much of her dad for doing it. But they left it all behind and didn’t look back, never anticipating air travel and nieces and nephews visiting in later years. The times threatened and broke down family structure. So no matter what, my mother was like”tell no one what goes on in this house”. It reminds me of J EP finding out if victims had a dad around and acting interested in your life but just wanted to know if your family was broken or if there was an exploitable angle.

I was told to keep away from a children's home near to where I lived, I'd be around 6 or 7. We used to go not to see the children, we never saw any but just to play on a wall that surrounded the home. Occasionally we would make fun of fat man who frequented that home, knowing he was too fat to catch us. That man was Cyril smith. My dad drove by one day and saw me. I never went there again. It was well known in that area what went on in that home.

The allegations about Elm Guest house were investigated at length by the police and investigative reporters and were found to be nonsense made up by fantasists who were subsequently convicted of making false accusations. The only charges ever brought concerned the fact that the owners allowed male prostitutes to use the place. However it seems some people just can't accept the truth and the attempt to claim the false allegations were part of some cunning cover up is laughable.
Child abuse is a terrible crime but the truth is also important. Wild allegations motivated by money or a desire for attention actually divert resources from and interfere with the process of dealing with real cases.
If what you’re saying is true, why did the guy get 18 years in prison for making false claims about people.
