Nick Heyward was a really great singer and songwriter. Pity he never got the recognition like George Michael and Nik Kershaw had. Howard Jones was also a great singer and fab keyboard player. Heyward was a great guitarist too
Love finding this song! I am a Canadian, as a kid in my twenties I visited a friend that lived in London, first time in August 1981, second time in September 1983. I remember this song when I was in the UK in 1983, wow it brings back great memories. I remember hearing ' Blue Hat For A Blue Day' on Capitol One radion, also in pubs, etc. I love Nick's other songs, but this song is fabulous for me. I bought the EP of this tune at an HMV near the Bond Street Tube Station London, I still have it. Sadly, '"Blue Hat For A Blue Day" never got any radio play in Vancouver, British Columbia. However, Nick's first band " Haircut 100 " did have songs played on CKLG & CFUN AM radio in Vancouver in 1982. Go figure....
Early 80s were a magical time music was amazing im irish and I love the spoons there song nova heart Is amazing and strange advance we run.both great Canadian bands from back then
My girlfriend at the time this came out, loved this song, I got it on 12 inch for her. she never stopped playing it, she loved nick Heyward. GOD, I MISS THEM DAYS. Love to you. xxxxxxxx
To steal a phrase - "You don't realise what you've got 'til it's already gone " Mr Heywood. ...thank you so much for what you have given us. You are so under - rated and sadly, under appreciated, but I will always remember you. As time goes by. I think your legacy will become greater
Wonder how people truly feel when people say things like “you’re under-appreciated and under-rated.” If it’s meant to be a compliment it actually comes off as a backhanded compliment. I imagine a person is feeling great and then along comes someone and says something like this and then others follow, because they think this will make you feel great. I think it’s a Debbie downer.
24 March 2019. Always and forever, thank you to Great Britain and the British people whose creativity, since the 1960s, has given the rest of the World hundreds of unique artists such as Nick Heyward and music of unparalleled beauty, quirkiness and atmosphere. What would our lives have been without British artists bands? Thank you from Sicily. And love, admiration and adoration. And after 36 years, with its joy, "Blue Hat For A For Day" has still the power to change my mind on those days when I'd rather electrocute myself in the shower.

All I can say...how do artists this good always fly under the mainstream drivel radar? Lucky for us...we chose to follow him through Haircut 100 and beyond..thank you Nick for all the wonderful songs through the years!.😁👍
Great song for a great day... just turned 50 years young and this great album still gets overplayed on my itunes playlist! Atlantic Monday, Whistle Down the Wind, When it Started to Begin... whole album still excites the eardrums!
Brilliant artist. Remembering back to happy times in 1993, when my favourite CD's (remember them?) were "Monday To Sunday", Sting's "Ten Summoners" Tales": and Laurence Cottle's "Five Seasons". And, I have to say (it's just occured to me) Nick appeared on the BBC Russell Harty Show in the 80's when I was in the house band up in the scenery, playing bass!
Je vous au découvert M. Heyward il y a seulement une semaine. Ce que je peux c que votre album North of a Miracle est un miracle .. superbes arrangements. Superbes mélodies. Superbe production. C un chef d'oeuvre. Merci
Love the song and video. For some reason this really resonates with me. Lightweight sure, but nonetheless a great pop song. Loved it then and still like it now so many years later.

As a 19 stone bodybuilder back in the day I saw Nick with his lovely girlfriend in an Indian Restaurant in Hampton Court................asking the waiter for his note pad.........I followed Nick to the toilets................he was clearly relieved in more than one sense when I asked for an autograph!..................
Did you say it's all over, it was me not a whisper, the marriage is over, was it me or my heart, justify all affection, beyond recollection, I was fine in virginia, guess it's true what I said, wake up, get up, get out, break up just say goodbye for today, I'm wearing my blue hat for a blue day is all we need please my love, release the things that I touch please my girl, release the story of love, swim with love, don't lose that magical part of you, my sweet blue girl, you're heading to lose your blue hat for a blue day is all we need a blue hat for a blue day is all we need, but you can't understand what I hold in my hand, it's only...god, how I miss you, my blue times that rain so hard but you can't understand what I hold in my hand, it's only...god, how I miss you, my blue times that came so hard, blue for you, blue for you, did you say it's all over leaving for minnesota, the marriage is over, was it me or my heart, please my love, don't lose the story of love, blue hat for a blue day is all we need, a blue hat for a blue day, a blue hat for a blue day, blue day, blue day, a blue day, it's all over, I guess it's all over for us two, but you can't understand my blue day.
Was a young boy when this was released. How time has flown by but this songs still resonates
Just been to see Nick and Steve Norman play at Pizza live Holborn London Jan 28th 2023. Fantastic night ...
My older cousin turned me onto Nick's music starting with Pellican's West...his music always cheers me up. He's doing God's work.
Nick Heyward was a really great singer and songwriter. Pity he never got the recognition like George Michael and Nik Kershaw had. Howard Jones was also a great singer and fab keyboard player. Heyward was a great guitarist too
Absolutely fantastic
Did Nik Kershaw really get that much more recognition, though? Like Nick Heyward, he also faded after his run of hits dried up
Heyward was an amazing singer songwriter who produced fantastic material right from Haircut 100 through his solo career.
Heyward IS an amazing songwriter. He's not dead yet dude 😉
@@stevel6943His career died when he left Haircut 100
@@todd291 got you👍
@@todd291 clearly it didn’t, as he had several solo hits including this one, and continues to make music.
I’m not sure what it is but listening to his music just keeps me young fabulous nick brilliant

Susan Webb well its been said that youtube is the closest thing to a time machine 🤔😉
I personally think that this is one of the best tunes from 1983. Totally ignored tune from that year.
Wasn't it just! A great album too (North Of A Miracle)
Hey nick thank you for all your songs, we need more melodies like the 80s

Hello Mate. Greetings to You and All of Italia now I've gotten over the Euros. 😁👍
That is a very heartfelt and funny comment by the way Benedetto.👍
A time long since gone. So sad
Clean cheerful pop. The other thing about the 80's is people were trying to set their own trends & styles. Nowadays it's Robotville!

North Of A Miracle, one of the best albums of the 80's.
Too true, I'd just joined the army back in '83 and my sister bought the album for me for my 18th birthday
It absolutely is.
Agree with that. I played it to death.
💕
Great Title too.
Brings back memories. Clear light in a new flat. Sounds surprisingly optimistic given the subject matter.
Always liked nick, great little jem this. Cheers people
1.5 speed to transform this gorgeous ballad into a spiffing dance track with Nicky sprinting around the streets of London. You're welcome.
amazing
:'D - that's funny - makes it sound like The Housemartins!
Gosh I forgot how lovely this song is. Thanks for the memories!
I'm still in love with Nick, always have been and I always will be and will always love his music!!😍😍
I love the arrangement, love the chord changes. Timeless sound. Poignant clip of Andy's guitar shop in Denmark Street too.

...So all good.

the marriage is over, was it me or my heart,

I was fine in virginia, guess it's true what I said,

a blue hat for a blue day is all we need,
but you can't understand what I hold in my hand,
it's only...god, how I miss you,
my blue times that rain so hard
but you can't understand what I hold in my hand,
it's only...god, how I miss you,
my blue times that came so hard, blue for you,
blue for you, did you say it's all over
leaving for minnesota, the marriage is over,
was it me or my heart, please my love,
don't lose the story of love,
blue hat for a blue day is all we need,
a blue hat for a blue day, a blue hat for a blue day,
blue day, blue day, a blue day, it's all over,
I guess it's all over for us two,
but you can't understand my blue day.
Wonderful
Here is the best xylophone intro of pop music.
What a beautiful little break at 2:12. Totally diverged from the obligatory guitar or sax solo..
