This was a greatly underrated early 80s Nick Heyward song that received little attention in the United States. I remember listening it a few times on the local rock stations. But its time was short and disappeared as quick.
Whistle Down the Wind evokes bittersweet memories in me, especially in the spring of 1983. I had graduated from college the previous May 1982 and was still in deep emotional doldrums. College had become my home away from home and I couldn't emotionally adjust to the fact that I would not be returning to my beloved college campus for another college school year. It was all over. Four years went by far too quickly. Whistle Down the Wind always brings me back to the sad time of spring 1983, listening to it on the radio as I drove through downtown, reflecting once again that I was not back on my beloved college campus. It was just as well. It was already mid-late March 1983 and that school year was coming to an end in just two months. Had I been a five-year student at my former college, I would now be looking at leaving permanently anyway. I was finally able to break free of my emotional doldrums by enlisting in the military and leaving home, starting a new, exciting chapter in my life that took my mind off my recent college past.

I must admit when Nick Heyward first appeared with the band Haircut 100, I did rather like them. I found them somewhat refreshing when they (amongst a world of continuous synthesized music that was cluttering the charts) burst out into the music scene. Don't get me wrong, I did like some of the synth-pop songs that were out but there seem to be nothing but synthesized music in the charts, with the exception of the a few. Haircut 100's music was just what the good old doctor ordered, cleverly composed and written by frontman Nick Heyward, "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)", "Love Plus One" and "Nobody's Fool" were all balanced nicely with catchy hooks, guitar riffs and impeccable musicianship, a subtle blending of rhythmic pop songs and jazz fusion. Their debut album Pelican West is a niffy little album with no sign of it containing a bad song or fillers and what now with a remastered edition release, you can find delight in the enjoyment of bonus tracks consisting of extended versions of their released tracks, I re-brought a copy of the album myself and it certainly did bring back those memorable days of the early 80's. It was such a shame that Nick decided to leave after the first album, but struggling with stress and depression after a year of constant work and pressure, he was burnt out, which finally led to his dismissal. In 1983 Heyward remerged as a solo artist and a debut single, which was originally meant to be the 100's next release "Whistle Down The Wind" which gave Heyward his first smash hit as a solo musician. The song differed to his earlier releases, it showed signs of maturity, a laid back feel with beautiful written lines and an instrumentation that flowed structurally and well patterned chords. I was just mesmerized by how lovely this song was that I brought the single instantly upon release. With a gorgeous video to match, you just cannot go wrong with "Whistle Down The Wind".

I was 21 when this came out, there was a heavy spiritual presence in the world at the time, lots of hope and heavy wave of positive vibes. I don't feel that presence in current times, but I do get snippets sometimes when I watch music videos like this.

Just found this online, since the song title has always made me wonder what it meant. "The phrase “whistle down the wind” means to abandon or leave someone or something". Interesting, because I had never heard of this phrase until I heard this song. Love this song! Especially the, "Hello, hello, hope you're feeling fine", lyrics. I can listen to that part on repeat and never get tired of it lol!!
