I think you are probably right. I liked Haircut 100 but didn't follow them or Nick nearly enough. Like the Pale Fountains I only discovered a couple of weeks ago! I love modern bands but these still sound great.

This was a greatly underrated early 80s Nick Heyward song that received little attention in the United States. I remember listening it a few times on the local rock stations. But its time was short and disappeared as quick. Whistle Down the Wind evokes bittersweet memories in me, especially in the spring of 1983. I had graduated from college the previous May 1982 and was still in deep emotional doldrums. College had become my home away from home and I couldn't emotionally adjust to the fact that I would not be returning to my beloved college campus for another college school year. It was all over. Four years went by far too quickly. Whistle Down the Wind always brings me back to the sad time of spring 1983, listening to it on the radio as I drove through downtown, reflecting once again that I was not back on my beloved college campus. It was just as well. It was already mid-late March 1983 and that school year was coming to an end in just two months. Had I been a five-year student at my former college, I would now be looking at leaving permanently anyway. I was finally able to break free of my emotional doldrums by enlisting in the military and leaving home, starting a new, exciting chapter in my life that took my mind off my recent college past.
I love everything about this song and it's video. It encapsulates 1983 for me. I was only ten. A much easier time before 'life' started to set in for real. 1983.. Damn, it seems like such a long time ago.. But then, I suppose it was. Thanks for this, Nick.

Wonderful days during school with this song in eastern NC... leaving town and moving, I had tuned in WQDR Raleigh, they were playing this song and it was the last song I heard before they faded out.
