I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the apartment complex I was living at in Mesa Arizona was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance they had the option to move out or pay full market value rent without assistance.
I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing in my area was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors and was unavailable to find another place to live.
I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit.
I have been trying to get help, and have not had much success. I was accepted for PATH Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I have been looking for a room for rent, but no luck.
So now I'm in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised.
I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost to a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts.
I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence at that. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center I know of for help, but am ineligible.
I worked for the Air Force starting my senior year of high school, as a civilian employee and for the next decade.
I also simultaneously served 6 years in the Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school.
I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, and just today was given a propane tank, heavy sleeping bag, and nice winter coat by Catholic charities, these were definitely a blessing and will definitely help, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice to handle the many needs I currently have trying to get out of my homeless situation along with handling my major dental problems, lack now of a safe vehicle, and trailer registration.
Any day the area I am staying may be closed, the BLM Rangers have told me they plan to close access to this Recreation Area soon. I will be in an Emergency Situation when they do, and have no idea yet what I will do .

I was homeless in NWPA for 11+ years and the biggest issue I had was the policy of having to leave and permitted to return. If it's raining, snowing, etc. --I'm going to require a roof over my head, especially for more than just a place to sleep. This is where I noticed other homeless people panhandling, loitering, and thus creating/perpetuating the stigma of homeless people. For-granted there were those that did gather bottles & cans, but when conditions weren't favorable, this caused several problems. After a few months of this, I developed several friends, and pulled our efforts together. We ended up getting a warehouse to rent & live at ...we got into basket weaving, small part assembly, recycling, etc. And when it came to eventually getting a vehicle, we got a van, and it allowed us to transport each other to jobs if/when we got them. What these organizations and so-called organizers need to do is stop aiding/perpetuating and actually organize. In the movie Planet of The Apes, Caesar said: "Apes alone, weak ...Apes together, strong" And it's that concept that got ALL of us up & out of the gutter ;)

I’m retired with little money on a strict budget, but my part in helping the homeless, especially the female homeless is by way of using the Dollar Store issuing common survival provisions as I encounter them and their pets. If I have some extra money, I’ll give cigarettes as well.

Between 30:33 and 31:05 is the real question. I don't have an answer for that. As services got better, and I have worked as part of those services, I've only seen the problem become more acute. Best intentions, are supposed to work. I am certain now that since most of the US isn't providing these services, that Eugene is now a magnet.

I have sympathy and compassion for people who are disabled, old and feeble but NOT tweakers or potheads who want to be "free". I moved to Oregon in 94, almost ran out of money once I moved to Portland, living in a motel paying weekly rent. But I took any job I could find while trying to get a job in the field I wanted to be in. I got a job as a telemarketer, then a bank courier and finally found a room to rent for $400 a month (which wasn't cheap in 94). I kept at it and got my first job working in the filed I am now in (without a college degree) amking $10 an hour and have been doing well ever since, thank God. I am tired of all the excuses from able bodied people, especially those who are able bodied enough to work but collect disability. Anyone who wants a job can find one and if you have to work two jobs to get on your feet, then that's what you do. As for the comments at 36:39, the bearded wonder should be proud that his "war" is only making things worse, not better, for the homeless.

The homeless problem is Eugene is enormous. Eric and CSS are amazing and I would know. I lived across the alley from their HQ where they have conastoga huts. Before they bought the property it was a vacant lot where mentally ill homeless lived. I used to cry myself to sleep because my daughter's window was 10feet from a very mentally ill man. I could do nothing. Only the owner of the vacant lot could trespass them. But one day Eric knocked on my door to tell me the plans for the vacant lot. I had seen the conastoga huts before and knew they that rules. After the community was built I felt SAFER. Why? Bevause anyone coming down that alley between us that might cause a ruckus or worse would get the attention of the tenets of the place. And the homeless respect them more than me. When they say "get outta this alley" they do. I knew that behind me, across that alley was a group that people looking out for each other and the neighborhood.
I moved but not because of the CSS community. It was a positive for our street. One one side ofy house you see a solution, the CSS community and on the other side, out front, you see tents and RV and needles all over. I couldn't let my daughter grow up with what was going on out front.
Thanks Eric. You and your communities are great neighbors

Come to northwest ohio. We have tons of factory jobs and they hire almost anybody. I work with dudes who have been to prison and people who don't have high school diplomas making 18 to 20 bucks an hour with pretty good health and dental insurance. The weather sucks but you can work if you want to. I used to live in eugene and worked at Lantz cabinets for 10 bucks an hour back in 2001. Ohio is better if you want a life.

Why would anybody want to bring their dog to work? And what makes him so special that he should need to do so? This guy is only pretending to look for work. Who is allowed to bring their dog to work? Lots of people! A person does not have to look disabled to be disabled enough to need a service dog. I know one person who is teaching her dog to be a therapy dog, and in that case, has to bring her dog to work in order to learn commands. A service dog, though, is one you would never know is there since they are quiet and very well behaved.

Minor point: At 29:00, when Erik cites the Point-in-Time Count, he way underestimates. In January 2019, the count found 2,165 people unsheltered in Lane County.

You do what you have to do to survive. If you want a job and they don't hire pot smokers guess what, quit smoking pot. I've had jobs I absolutely hated in the past but I worked them anyway. To get a good job do whatever they employer requires otherwise you don't want the job badly enough. NO EXCUSES. Either you want it or you don't. I now have a good job where I clear a thousand a week but they don't hire pot smokers. It's stressful but the money is good.

The hard task at hand, you have to filter out the true homeless from people who prefers to live as such. No way do I want to provide housing to those who wants to be homeless. In addition, it will be necessary to have some form of oversight committee involving security, law enforcement, extraction methods to the undesirables and criminal elements. Female homeless will definitely need such support. If you are willing to tackle this rewarding endeavor, you’ve got a huge job on your hands, especially on the legal side. A good example is the interview with Kyle who claims he and others PREFERS to live on the land. So why provide free housing to them when they want to exist that way.

Your 15$ dollar an hour agenda immediately almost doubled rent in Oregon and now after almost doubling they can raise it 7% a year in 10 years that is 70% when in Oregon have wages raised 7% a year? My husband is an electrician after 32 years of marriage his hourly wage has not doubled at 7% a year after 32 years his income should have gone up over 215% that would have been amazing

Electricians make pretty good money in the first place. And second, with the whole COVID thing, he's lucky that he still has a job.

They all have an "excuse" . at the end of the day homelessness is a choice they are making. There is programs out there if you listen none of these people want to take advantage of them because they dont want to do what is asked to partake in such programs. If you want help you get it how it's given if you don't like it then keep being lazy and suffer

There are people that don't want to work. They just wont come out and say it cos it's not acceptable by society's standards. Many homeless people can't cope in employment so they live on the streets and they may tell you that they look for work or they have a degree in this and that cos they know that is what people want to hear. I don't judge them cos I hate working.

At least you’re honest about your laziness. Now, get off your tush and earn some money or barter for food and supplies. Don’t lie about complaining of your plight. See if you can make something to sell or to trade with others. One summer I sharpened my Dad’s old Eagle Scout pen knife on a rock and created crochet and knitting needles from sticks. I used the money I made to purchase inexpensive yarn from a thrift store. At first, I just made samples with the needles and hooks for customers to try out. That turned into selling a few quick and easy items. Then I began classes. My classroom was a folding table with an assortment of chairs from others’ trash under a canvas tarp behind my flea market stall. Just start doing SOMETHING. See where it leads. Can’t afford food? Volunteer at a soup kitchen and you’ll almost always get a hot meal and some leftovers to take with you. ASK! The worst they can say is no.
