Eugene, Oregon: Truly the Hate Crime Capital? (Documentary)

  • This documentary investigates the high hate crime rates in the city of Eugene, Oregon. The progressive college town has been reported by the FBI to have the highest number of hate crimes in the state, and some of the highest numbers of hate crimes per capita of any city in the United States. Are these numbers truly reflective of the atmosphere in Eugene, or could there be more to these statistics than meets the eye?
This project was created entirely by Karli Olson in partial fulfillment of the thesis requirements of the MA Journalism program at the University of Limerick.
Trigger warning: One use of n*****, discussion of racially-biased harassment
If you or anyone you know has been the victim of a hate crime or bias incident in the Eugene area, you can receive support through the Office of Human Rights and Neighborhood Involvement.

I am 70 years old, a Asian (born a raised on Hawaii) and have lived through racism in my life and will say that I have lived in the area (Springfield) for over 5 years and would know from personal experience if racism is alive and well in the community in which I live, there is no overt racism in the area. I lived here for about 6 months and made the decision that this is where I am going to die and went down and prepaid for cremation services, I would never do that if I felt the community that I lived in was racist or unfair to anyone weather white, black or purple, we have a good community that has problems like everyone else, but I cannot believe that the area is at the top of the charts concerning racism.

It seems that Eugene's reward for being the only city in the state that has established a special office for reporting hate crimes, is to be labeled as the hate crime capital. Since no other Oregon city receives and compiles these reports at such an office, obviously few of them appear on a record that is easily accessible and separate from a listing of other infractions in those places. In these other cities, where such incidents have to be reported to the police, their hate crime statistics are very low. This shows how much confidence the people who are targeted by such crimes have in the police. Eugene has done the right thing by setting up this office. The city and those of us here will just have to ignore misguided accusations from those around the state whose cities have not yet done the right thing. The fact that this special office in Eugene has received so many complaints, shows that it is fulfilling the purpose it was assigned.

the denial in the comments is the real root of this problem. Most Oregonians are extremely ignorant and racist, while refusing to consider the possibility that they may in fact be ignorant and racist. There's denial in the comments because Eugene is one the most liberal cities in the nation and people that live here aren't just going to sit there and be called something they are not.
Is there racism here? Yes, some, just like everywhere else on the planet.
But to portray Eugene today as some hotbed of Klan and neonazi activity is just absurd.

This condition does exist in isolated pockets for sure, but I traveled the state for years on my job and know first hand how intelligent and tolerant Oregonians are. Eugene is a lovely place but the Racism here is COVERT which is hard to analyze. The population is behind the cultural curve by at least 10 years. I moved here in 2007 and people were behind in terms of cultural exposure. In the past 14 years it has become more diverse. After George Floyd died, the outrage toward racism was high in Oregon. It effected Eugene to some degree but this place is a bubble. Most people are chill, reserved and friendly but not hateful. They are provincial.

Being behind on the "cultural curve" sounds like just another way of saying white people here do not yet have the exposure to the diversity that you can find elsewhere. That is understandable though. It also is a condition found throughout the west. It's funny but Eugene was always to me way ahead, not behind, the culture curve. So but I guess everyone's point of reference is different. I certainly feel that as more diversity comes to Oregon, Eugene will lead the way in acceptance of it. But they aren't living in a bubble just because they haven't been exposed to what YOU have been exposed to. It's just their reality and probably the only reality they have ever known.

This was very well done - beautiful production and very good commentary. I’ve lived In Eugene my whole life, I transitioned to female as a young teenager in a rural school. I was a victim of multiple hate crimes, harassment and physical violence. Yet there were equally as many kids in that school fighting back against the right wing extremism. Eugene is a beautiful city that is growing rapidly in population and in wealth. We have a great school system here, very good roads and relatively reasonable taxes all considered. We have a lot of liberals, a lot of republicans and just enough people in the middle to create in my mind a generally respectable local population. We don’t have much racial diversity, which is disappointing. I think we’re on the way to a better city with better access to resources needed to fix homelessness. We already have really good social programs when you look at our neighboring states and counties. Thank you for providing this RUclips video- I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope more people get to watch this.

And we would climb up to the top of Spencer's Butte before sunrise and sit on the rocks at the very top and watch the sun come up. That's how much I have invested in Eugene. But that was 40 years ago. Now it's a Democrat liberal lesbian lead communist socialist government. They can't be fixed

Are you kidding me this is so not true, before 2005 I was a minority as a white female in my high school at Springfield High School because it was mostly Mexicans and blacks. And Skinner's view is nothing but a place for teenagers and other people that want to go smoke weed go for a walk or go up there to have sex there's no KKK bases over there are you kidding me??? I've lived there from 180-2017. This is extremely exaggerated. I will say from a witness perspective that yes you can get pulled over for driving black in Oregon but that is mostly because blacks in Oregon especially males don't have driver's license I can't tell you how many of my friends growing up in high school and After High School that I've dated, not a single one of them had a driver's license not because they got it suspended but because they never got it and kept getting pulled over and then it got permanently revoked. Its a joke among the rest of us that you all did it to yourselves. Eugene in Springfield are not that big and it is very easily to get recognized by cops after the first or second time. And nobody come at me because my second child's father is black and he will agree with everything I'm saying cuz he doesn't have a damn license cuz he never got one but he got it revoked because he got pulled over so many times that he can now no longer get a license in the state of Oregon.

Umm NO! Not even close. That would be Salem & Polk County. Your sources are just wrong. Much of Salem's hate groups & activity isn't as widely reported (as discussed briefly here) because the cops are a big part of the problem & the local MAGA & white nationalist attitude is very much a way of life. Salem is also Frump MAGA central in Oregon. Springfield is problematic to a far bigger degree than Eugene. That's just the current facts. When the KKK ran rampant in Eugene was several decades ago! Most people realize, some things have changed. Not necessarily for the better.

Oregon is basically still a white state, ranked 14th in terms of its "whiteness" in the US. But smack dab in the middle of it sits Eugene, a progressive university town. That makes it more diverse and with a more educated minority population but one that is still pretty isolated. All of this points to the situation being as described with the higher level of reported hate crimes. You are not going to see this level of hate crime reporting elsewhere due to the level of awareness being much lower. And of course its lower because not that many minorities living in these other towns are going to stick their neck out and report stuff.
