The man that said, "There's not a single sober homeless person I know"...It breaks my heart to hear that. Life is hard enough without adding that to the mix. Been there, done that. Staying clean has been the best gift I ever gave myself. Got my life, job & home back. It's been 16 years now and I will never go back to that dark place. Remember - ''Where there is life there is hope.' Never give up on yourself.
Amen! I too was homeless but not because of alcohol or drugs. I lost my health and then my job because being on disability isn’t enough money. I prefer having health than being rich.
They may not be sober not because the lack of sobriety made them homeless, but became addicts because they are homeless.

"The man said"? Well, the man is wrong! Mental illness, lack of support and the fact that under drug use of any sort is usually a mental illness or some kind of trauma.

Sometimes they were mentally fine until they were homeless though and some after they are no longer on the streets the mental issues they had are gone simply because they no longer have the burden of having to worry where they're going to go or how or what or when they will be able to eat again.....so the mental services comment in my opinion is ridiculous
Early intervention too, housing people as soon as they become homeless.
@@420horrorfreak here in America in 1990 they passed the Americans with Disabilities Act it was the worst thing to ever happen to people with mental illnesses end homelessness or drug addiction. There really isn't any housing nor are their homes or even hospitals that will take you in. Getting someone committed is even harder. Our homeless problem in America is pretty damn bad as well as this new Fentanyl crisis going on. I live in Philadelphia and the Kensington part of the city is enough to break anyone's heart. There are no services

"There's not a single sober homeless person I know" During the past 11 months I got to know dozens of local homeless people. What I forgot to take into account was drugs. I allowed one person to move on to my property, someone who had been living in a city park with a dog. I thought, give this person a chance, to get her life together, to find housing etc. Before long she had started inviting people to "her" new place, and I would find five or ten or a dozen people who had showed up to all smoke meth together. I was ovewhelmed and could not stop it. I learned soon enough that every single person was a meth addict. For some reason, no heroin addicts, all meth. So the person I had helped took the opportunity to just have 24/7 meth parties, on my property.
Finally the City building code people got on my case about having people living in an unapproved outbuilding. So foolishly I allowed her to move into a room in the house. The partying continued. But I had not wanted to turn someone out into the winter cold. When I asked, requested, and finally demanded that she (who had now added her ex-jailbird husband to move in my house without my sonsent) find another place and let me have my house back, they refused. "Make me" they said when I asked them to leave. Meanwhile they used my utilities, my electricity, laundry room, bathroom, and central heating.
Meanwhile the room I had made for them turned into a room piled three feet deep with scavenged dumpster trash. And with a dog in there. And they changed the locks and would not allow me into my own room.
So I called the police and said "these squatters won't leave". The police would do nothing, said they could do nothing, that my only solution was to do an eviction and give them thirty days.
Meanwhile they attacked me in my room, knocked me out with a club, then called the police on me, and when I regained consciousness, I was being arrested.
With a head wound and a tongue bitten almost half through, I was in a holding cell, alone, cold, and injured, for 48 hours. I'm almost 73 years old. I never was taken to the hospital nor did I see a doctor.
Meanwhile the homeless people who had attacked me were staying in my house. I bailed out on an O.R. bond, and the terms of the bail said not that those squatters had to move out, but rather that I, the homeowner who had done nothing but help these people, was ordered not to return home.
With a concussion, amnesia, no money, and the weather about 13 degrees outside, I returned home anyway.
That was the end of February. I was falsely charged with battery and put out of my own home and was by this time penniless since the homelss people had tripled my utility bills and there seemed to be nothing to do to stop them.
Now it is April 21 and finally, today, the troublesome pair is moving out, because they were persuaded to do so by a friend who is 300 lbs and who spent 15 years in a stae prison down south. He knew how to convince them it was time to leave. Non-violently by the way. Somehow he convinced them. But they agreed and are moving out today.
Both of them call me names and curse me, and there has not been a word of thanks for the free support for months.
They have no gratitude, only resentment that they finally have to stop sponging off me and get out in the world and do something for themselves, and quit bankrupting me, threatening me, and ruining my life.
I must say, DO NOT take homeless into your home unless you want to suffer and lose everything you've got.
They lie, steal, threaten, and will not, cannot stop uing meth, and feel it is their right to take over an elderly man's home, intimidate him, steal from him, verbally and physically abuse him.
So in my opinion, they deserve what they get. I gave them a chance and they blew it, and they abused me in all sorts of ways.
The latest thing is that one of them stole my checks from the mailbox, and were able by means of online depositing to totally empty my bank account of a thousand dollars, leaving me with nothing.
That case is not solved yet but I think I know who did it. Forgery, mail theft, digital fraud, grand theft, and I can't even buy myself food until I get some money somehow because they took every last dollar I needed to get through the rest of April.
Compassion is great. But don't do as I did and make yourself vulnerable to people who cannot be trusted and who will turn on you in a moment if they see an advantage.
So today, they go back to being homeless. My attitude is, I did a lot for them, sacrificed a lot; my home is damaged, I am traumatized, and all my money stolen. And this is just the outline of the story. They deserve what they will get now.
That being said, many of the other homeless I got to know did appreciate the help, and were straight with me, and didn't abuse me or steal from me. So they are not all bad by any means.
However, the bad apples spoil the whole barrel.
Because of my own experience, I must recommend that people be extremely cautious in helping the street people. 99 percent of them are con artists, and in my experience 100 percent of them were meth addicts, and only honest when it suited them. True story from Lawrence, Ks.
Never give them a red cent. They are there because they don't want to follow rules.
So sorry 😔 that happened to you. God sees all. You'll be rewarded for all the good you have done for the ungrateful people.
Your story sounds ridiculous, I can believe homeless can/would do that, but it’s sounds like a far fetched story you spun
Putting all in one category is wrong. More so you seemed to have something else going on outside of just helping the lady as you moved her in even after you seen how she had done in the place you had provided. If you’re going to tell a story, tell it all

(We homeschool our 2 teenagers) I have meet some of the most unique/amazing people in that time. The perspectives & experiences are ONE OF A KIND. Spirituality & paying it forward became a HUGE part of our life. With so much selfishness & nastiness in the world it can get very overwhelming @ times 😒 but it's our choice how we deal or let it effect us. River Smithe Yes!! This month is a year mark of being back in our own home again💕 we were homeless/evicted from Dec 24th 2015 (YES XMAS EVE -no vehicle😥) -July 2017. Ironically it is the FURTHEST we ever travelled as a family (Florida-Cali-settled now in Alabama) 😂😂 Things are Blessed now with regular attendance of our church. Happier & greatful for all things even the SIMPLEST.

I've been homeless in the us before and I never knew a single other person who was homeless who wasn't on drugs including me!

I got a buddy. That's homeless. Nit fun to see him during the winter. But it's his personal choice. He dosnt want help. He likes that lifestyle. 0 responsibility. And gets to do what he wants when he wants. He likes it. 7th year now. And it gets cold here in Canada.
When that type asks for money, ask him if you have ever given him money before, and if he has paid you back. Then tell him you can't give money to someone without a good credit rating with you. That is how the world works.
No one should ever go to sleep hungry and the animals as well
Drugs not only dull pain it adjusts your core temp and you no longer feel as uncomfortable in weather extremes. It Makes sense that even those who began sober end up addicted after being homeless for any significant amount of time. It is so sad that anyone is homeless but seeing how many children are homeless is heartbreaking.
Sometimes they're addicted to drugs and in need of rehab. Sometimes they're mentally ill and in need of help. More often than not you cannot get a job when you're homeless!! If you're an employer and have the option of hiring someone who looks unkempt and smells, or someone who had a permanent address, who would you hire? Even if someone homeless gets a job, you cannot survive on minimum wage.
Tiny homes and building your own shelter should be a HUMAN RIGHT!
I would love to get a tiny hm. Im not in need bug I think they are better for the environment plus don't cost much to build. I have wondered why no one has done this for the homeless or elderly
We used to have public housing built by the government for the people to live in so we wouldn't have homelessness, then from the 1980's onwards margaret thatchers government started selling them all off for peanuts, and not building more to replace the ones that were sold off, and here we are today with a homeless and housing crisis.
I agree completely they're should be tiny homes built for the homeless everyone all around the world to help keep them from freezing and food banks an such where they can get food and support of different kinds anything to help people get back on their feet

Housing is def a part of it, esp for ppl like the dude from care who has a job but can find affordable housing, most ppl who live in their cars &/or has a job that is usually the main problem... but def for the majority of homeless ppl it’s underlying mental (or less commonly, physical) health probs like addiction, ptsd, depression etc that prevents them from being able to hold a job or can’t manage living in conventional accommodation without proper supports, in which case ur bang on - there’s a reason they became homeless in the first place, so without addressing those root causes, it’s inevitable that they’ll end up back on the streets

Fair play to you Professor Green and Real Stories. The homeless epidemic is the exact same at the moment in Ireland but what adds to problem is there's a housing crisis going on. Despite the economic down turn rents are increasing and even ppl with good jobs struggle to keep up with payments. It sickens me when I see the Government officials and politicians driving around in their fancy cars and wearing their designer suits or donating money to foreign countries and yet they claim there's not enough money to address the problem. Everybody (regardless of their crimes etc) should have the right to a place they call home. Also I'm fed up of this theory thst a person isn't homeless if they live in a hostel, B&B etc. Once you don't gave a home of YOUR OWN you're in fact homeless.
Philip OReilly I know right? Rents here in Cork alone average €1,200 a month alone and though I work in retail I cannot afford to move out of my parents home. I avoid Cork City like a disease since its overrun with homeless people and drug addicts. I've decided I will emigrate in a few years possibly Germany where living costs and especially rent are much lower in the hope of moving my life forward. Ireland has gone to the dogs for sure
Adrian OK Do you not think it would be a better to stay and help sort the problem instead of running from it. If every young adult keeps running off to other countries there will be less taxes etc going into the government budget. Homeless and addiction services are already severely under funded as it is. Only a few months ago an addiction treatment centre in Navan had to close. It was opened by a nun and for the last 10 yrs she was running the place on her own money and the small amount of donations they received. There's no point in housing a homeless addict until they deal with their addiction as if we don't they'll be back on the same streets sleeping in the same door ways within a year. But then there's also no point in sending an addict to treatment and they get clean to be just sent back to same streets and the same ppl who were part of their addiction.
Could your housing crisis be related to immigration? Most likely politicians don't consider this before allowing them to flood into your country.
Beth Myers No it has nothing to do with immigration. The housing crisis is because of the lack of social housing being built, the recession and rents being to high

They don't want food. They want booze, drugs, cigs, tattoos. I know. I tried to help someone. It wasn't good enough for him. Never again!
Theres some real crap attidues in the comment section, whatch the second half of the docu, some these folks work full time. Rent prices are unachievable as a single person. Demand hasn't forced up rent prices in the private sector. Greed has done that. The slum lords.
Actually, there is limited supply of housing and an ever increasing demand: these cause rent prices to soar, because it is basic economics.
Housing can't keep up with population growth which includes immigrants.
Not slumlord greed locally in Portland, landlords lost in income you it's flippers buying up homes , throwing some paint on the walls and selling at profit. Thing is, that is how a housing market economy recovers after wall street collapsed the housing bubble but it drives up home prices and rent.

WHERE IS THE DAMN HELP FOR THESE POOR PEOPLE?!? Where are all the 'Sunday worshippers' now? I once heard a man in a chemist bemoaning that we have to put up with all these 'druggies'. Hand on heart, the following Sunday I saw him walking into our local church to worship! I'm not a church goer but I know that I have more christianity in my heart than he does. Is Spice legal anymore? I remember an ex-boyfriend of mine that smoked it. We lived together for like 4 or 5 years. We both drank but he quit and then one day we found a bag of weed in our house (we had 4 other roommates) and just put it on the fridge with a magnet and when no one had claimed it the next day, we decided to smoke it even though we both only very rarely smoked weed (though I smoked a lot as a teen until it started giving me anxiety). It was fun and weird, we had Thanksgiving dinner at an Indian restaurant but it seemed to hook him. He started smoking weed with our roommate and buying it. They sold spice at the bodega across the street and so when he couldn't get any weed, he'd buy spice. It said in caps NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION on the package. I smoked it once and YEAH, reminded me more of salvia (which is also legal), just like 10 minutes of insanity where the world feels like it's pulling away from you and it puts you in a weird, dark place. I hated it. He kept smoking it the same way someone with a weed addiction would just smoke weed all the time when he couldn't get or afford the real stuff. I went to visit my parents one day and when I got home that night he told me he smoked spice and went for a walk and froze up and basically forgot how to walk, didn't know where he was (a block from our house) and was clutching on to a chain link fence for dear life. Thankfully a kind Mexican man recognized he was in crisis and even though there was a language barrier, he got him home. Thank you random stranger! That more or less stopped the spice thing but not weed. To this day, he's probably a total pothead but spice was NEVER a replica of weed, just something that looked like it sprayed with extremely toxic chemicals that have really bad neurological effects
It has chemicals like weed killer and bug killer in it.
In the UK spice (any another Phycoactive substance apart from alcohol, caffeine, sugar and nicotine) has been banned as of 2016

Heard you say they become human "again" they've always been human just took the wrong route and are trying to find our way again. Yes I've been here and doing alot better than i was 2 years ago amd try to pass on don't give up it gets better. When he said that he was referring to the way people see them. A lot of people when they look at homeless they don’t have empathy. They don’t see them as human beings. He was saying they became “human” again as in he sees them through different eyes. They weren’t just a statistic.

One thing that always tick me off is that this people have kids. I make / generous salary per year and i still think is not enough money to have children. And im consider “middle class” dont bring children into the world if u cant afford to take care of yourself.

What we are witnessing are innocent human beings who have grown up in neglected or terrible parental homes now suffering with complex post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as personality disorders. The lack of funding for human resources and Social Services is what keeps it repeating the cycle. You can blame your government. But do not blame these children.
Homelessness is complex. It's not merely about providing shelter or housing. These people become " institutionalized " to living in the streets. To the degree they ever had any, they lack life and social skills, discipline, healthy routines, self- motivation, problem-solving, budgeting and goal-setting skills. 😐
Watching this documentary it’s sad they should do something about this the government this is no good.
With any addiction... you can't force anyone to stop. They have to make that decision for themselves....

I was homeless at one point and it was not good. Being hungry sucks. The things you say you would never do, believe me if you are hungry you will.

WOW such a great doc really made me think i feel so bad for those ppl i know i always try to give what ever few dollars i have to them even if i know there going to get high i dont know what they went through to get on the streets and im sure its not easy so i dont judge
Same. I try to give only food and find often they want cash to be able to buy booze or drugs. There is help for them to get food and they don't seem to really be going hungry, at least in my country. Buying food for their dogs is always helpful too.
One time I bought a woman who was on the street in winter and I thought was homeless a scarf and gloves and she couldn't care less. She explained she had a flat and just wanted alcohol/ smokes. Addictions are no joke

Thats not true love!!! I lived in the streets for 8 years!!! I was adict to smack and crack!!! I hit the bottom Lost everything i had!!! 20 years ago i went to reahb and i start to bill my live again!!! Today Im a public servent i have a house, car, etc etc!!!

I have seen homeless people in London, Moscow, San Francisco, Kyiv.

San Francisco was disheartening, considering the trillion dollar economy in California.
Probably the most hard core homeless were in Russia and Ukraine.
To survive brutal winters in an utterly indifferent and amoral society is nothing short of astonishing.
Personally, I never give money, however one can show kindness in other ways.
It usually goes back to the same issue in the beginning... Always living above your means. Then when any little mishap occurs, it's over. You're homeless. People don't save, don't think about tomorrow as in decades ago when the generations lived with much less. The cycle keeps going...

Back starting in the early 80’s Reagan began reducing social housing drastically while Thatcher did much the same thing. That was 40 years ago. Since then the the poor have gotten much poorer, seeing the middle class shrink. In this period of time, poverty has hit children without mercy and seen them homeless in growing numbers. How are these people, homeless throughout their childhoods, suppose to learn how to help themselves? Society is failing.

Good god! I watched this to study homelessness but spice is absolutely horrible. Legalize weed already... and get them some shelter!
What I feel watching this is right on top of you.2 urine checks, if smoking even a cigarette can loose there room.Not good to rush them so strong.Need time to come down and detach from the emotions still running on the homeless pain.And it' s pain! I always give homeless people. money friends say I shouldn't as they spend it on there addiction deep down I know this but still can't pass a homeless people, it is a disgrace there on the street rehab and hospitals should be there for them and when the come out a small apartment for them also a good strong conselling service

I'm gonna live in the most expensive city in the world this is sad.
Homelessness is a huge problem, but I think prob a bigger one is apathy and judging, hate and fear, ignorance and want. If such a person sees this it either means nothing, or they are angry and indignant. It took me a long time to realize that what I think, and truth/facts, may very well Not be the same thing. ;)

Def agree, but some ppl are incredibly good at hiding their homelessness.. esp young ppl who have a place (or a few they can rotate thru) they can reliably stay, where they have access to laundry & showers/hygiene products so they’re able to take care of themselves.. esp if they also have a job, u would be surprised how many ppl are technically homeless that u would never guess they are

Its all over the world the so called leaders that are supposed to be running our countries should be made sleep homeless for at least 6 months & live off what homeless people get its no good them spending one night on the streets they need to no what bits like maybe then they will start to make changes
America is the same. Everything goes up in price and hourly wages stay the same for 10 or more years. Then if you lose a job thru no fault of your own, it's like good luck. They say the economy is getting better unemployment is going down, but they would have to go to every town and city in all of the U.S. to take an accurate reading of how many people have steady full- time jobs. No job is a guarantee anymore you can be laid off at anytime. If there's not enough work then the newbies are the first to go. I'm currently unemployed and so isn't my sister.
Since Trump became president unemployment of blacks has hit an all time low and unemployment of hispanics is at its lowest in 15 years. He's on the path to great progress.
The un-employment figures aren't accurate. All production labor is through staffing agencies now, as well as some office jobs. I've worked at them , and you still get laid off twice a year during the slow season, and supervisors still rush the line to get their bonus, and then send everybody home at half day. This is never counted as a lay-off, or un-employment because you are always employed at the staffing service, you just aren't active at that moment. So...you guessed it...you can't register as un-employed, you get no help, your homeless. Had it happen five times, with my kids. So actually, un-employment is still high, it's just miraculously not counted.

How do they even cope with being homeless... I am not sure if I would be able to live through it. I think I would be thinking about suicide 24/7. I mean, you have nowhere safe to go, so you can get robbed/murdered/raped everywhere. I admire these people for being sort of able to deal with it but I wish they didn't have to.
a modern, wealthy society...and this is the reality for too many on the street, or begging without begging for a friend to put them up. awful.

I don't understand how there are homeless people if the tax rate is so high in europe, aren't there funded programs/shelters available?? Services to help people transition after they get out of prison?
Since the 1980's the government and councils sold off public housing and failed to build any more to replace the ones that they sold. And here we are in this housing and homelessness crisis.
Most people that host a documentary dont put there own face on the thumbnail, it would be sorta like Steven Spielberg putting his face on the front of every DVD case on the Movies he create :P

Where is the father of this child? - why isn't he supporting her?- I imagine he might have been abusive, or whatever- it is sad to see so many women in this situation- the fathers of these children don't support them- they wind up in poverty, while they live free of any responsibility- what will change this?

Go and take a look at how many "Normal" people that are addicted to alcohol and drugs, go and look at how they try and hold a normal life together, with kids and a family, you are focusing on the minority that cannot cope and fall out of society, there are many more suffering but trying to hold their lives and their families lives together, these ones are the ones that opted out, take a look at the ones trying to keep it together. Loads of help and social services for the drop outs, SFA for the people trying to live a normal life.
