- VICE embed with the staff and residents of The Stay Inn, a motel that gets most of its clientele through prison and homeless services. Arrests and fights between residents are a common occurrence and everyone here has a past that involves tragedy, mental illness, drug abuse or incarceration.
In the midst of an unprecedented homelessness crisis in Melbourne, we see members of The Stay Inn community hope and plan for a better future. But while they dream of breaking the cycle of poverty, The Stay Inn is as close to a home as most of them will get for now.

The guy who kept repeating his mantra about ‘how many blokes would stick around to help a woman who’s got so much going on’ - is a piece of work. He is already tearing down her self worth. The woman is broken hearted and all this man can do is pat himself on the back for sticking around? There are people in this world who seek out others who they can easily manipulate. I’d say he is definitely one of those people
He does it in such a subtle way. If she says, "wth does that mean?!!" He'll say, "I was just saying. I didn't mean anything about it. You've got to stop being so paranoid." And she'll believe that. He's found the perfect person to take advantage of.

Didn’t realise there was a doco on this place. I could honestly write a book about all the stories/people I’ve met here. Its been 10 plus years but still live by the lessons I learnt here. I was only 8 and my mother wasn’t particularly the best role model but some of these people were. I can gladly say this place had a massive (positive) impact on my life. I hope that everyone that was placed here is going well and know that I think of you all often

The Manager of this hotel is the epitome of what a good, decent human being should be. No judgement - no preconceived notion about why they landed there....my heart broke though for Kath. I hope and pray that she got away from that guy and is starting to recover from whatever he put her through. Poor sweet woman :( She was trying so hard.

that s why you should never be too nice n tolerant towards these type of people who have severe mental issues - they ll drag you down with them and make you lose your business/income and get you bankrupt....He should have taken in only 2 or 3 of such difficult guests if he absolutely wanted to be empathetic and reserve all the other rooms for regular guests and the hotel would probably still exist...He should have either run a shelter OR a hotel, you cannot combine both.
@@combatduckie it still exists. To the joy of the neighbours. I used to drive by there when I liven in inner north all the time. Ambulance and police out of front maybe 8/10 times, fights the rest. It was entertaining at least lol

The hotel owner is losing business and money in order to help the less fortunate .The govt should be at least helping him with extra funding to keep the place going and in good condition as he is helping the community

This is my second time watching this and omg phil has one of the kindest hearts. Most people judge those with addictions as being useless but you can see phil views them for the humans they are. They're just broken people who need a little bit of kindness and guidance & its refreshing to see someone willing to give them a chance on a planet where the vast majority of those in society would judge them & disregard them. Bless him.

The thing is Joan , she’s a survivor . I think she is ok, i think over all she knows how to get away from these assholes . Hopefully she will return to the Inn in a couple of years .

Awww🥺..I just finished watching this video..What amazing, caring and compassionate staff they had there...
That sucks. I Google'd the place and one of the first thing that came up was a news report about a guy getting shot there. That happened before this documentary was made, though. It was clearly a rough place but it'd be better than the streets. Hopefully the residents found stable accommodation.

yes that was the funniest moment, seeing the cop kick himself for forgetting his training not to call a suspect 'champ', it's a friendly term to most people, but not people who've been, or are in prison.

Wow the manager, really has a good heart, I mean he is in the right place helping the people that actually need to be helped!! With out a man like that, their life would just continue to get worse...you know? I hope these people realize how GOOD they have it there. MUCH RESPECT to that man ❤ he's helping more lives than he's aware of. So glad I watched this.

Phil deserves a lot helping out those in need, if I knew a place like this existed whilst living in Melbourne I would’ve conquered but yet employment and rental prices defeated me
When I heard the staff there state that she was sexually abused I got a tear in my eye. I could totally relate to that, because that's what happened to me as well. Although, I was never homeless, I did consider being homeless because of it though. Luckily, I had a friend who let me stay with her as emergency accommodation. It was really nice watching this video, I could really relate to the stories being told, the lives of the people that were unfolding and the personalities living at the apartments. It was really inspiring to see how people were at a bad situation in their lives, but they still had hopes, dreams, desires and even goals to get better. I felt like I could really relate to it. Because sometimes its so easy to judge and be judged, but when you see the level someone is at, and that they are making genuine changes to their life, it is nice. When you can see that they are genuine people with struggles who are trying to make it by, and because they may have mental health or drug related difficulties - it really highlights the humanity of the people. This is a great documentary.

I would like to thank everyone who helps, gives up there time and money to help these kids, I come from a very lucky family but live in the middle of punchbowl nsw. I see the problems that arise and it's so sad to see the kids trapped in a life like that
They aren’t kids, they all look a lot older than 30 even considering how drugs can age ppl... otherwise I agree wholeheartedly
Fairplay 2 the staff having to put up with the abuse and still have time for each one of them, I was homeless and I live in Dublin Ireland and I can tell you from experience that a place like that is badly needed for the families and other homeless people in Ireland....🙏🙏🙏God bless you.

There was a fire and it’s closed down and I believe it’s being demolished. I would like an update on the people as well. I found out about this place from another video were urban explorers were exploring here because it was abandoned and that’s how I learned the details.

It was great to see people like Phil actually trying to do something about the HUGE (and growing) problem of homelessness in Australia. Plenty of people talk about it, too few are willing to jump into the chaotic results of a problem and get their everything dirty and broken, and staying the course anyway.

The sadness of the residents is overwhelming, knowing that not only society has turned their backs on them, but often their families have as well, the world needs to be more kind, and empathetic, instead of sitting in judgement.

It's hard living in a place like that but it also can make you feel less alone, knowing that there's someone right there who knows what you're going through. I lived in a sober house for almost a year myself because they tell you to change people and places to change habits, and they're right about that. Those places can really drain you though emotionally when you're already at your lowest (too many people with too much baggage all concentrated together, ya know?) I'm glad I did it though. It got me 18 months sober from alcohol. I've relapsed since COVID though. Working and routine keeps my head on straight, and quarentine and all the meetings shut down was just hard for a lot of us in recovery. Just do your research because some places are unfit for humans to live in, like holes in the roof and no heat but they still get grant money?? I recommend finding one started by a recovered addict with a decade or two of sober time and not some huge business that has dozens of locations; they usually really actually care. It's probably going to be a bit run down and there's gonna be some drama, but it really helps get your head back on straight

I think it was $80 a night for the white picket fence people who had no idea the place also ran as a sort of rehab shelter (the rent for the homeless/rehab shelter people would have been subsidised by the gov.)
Yep... these "Angels " think they're going to clean up in this area with these people's disability benefits checks.
Regardless of the price no one should dismantle the property like that
She was talking ab arrears so my guess is he owed & has to pay some extra on top of the normal rate..l otherwise yeah thats crazy lol idk what prices are like in Australia but ik when I was homeless I never stayed in a place that was more than 50 a night & that’s just the standard rate aka no discount, plus I live in Canada so our prices are steep af compared to the states

I enjoyed that but it was sad at times. What happened to Cat ? Did she return. The owner is not just working for a profit but is obviously a humanitarian, helping those who need a roof over their heads and being very flexible with the terms of the tenancy. There has to be a cut off point though or the place will not survive. That's the world we live in. It's amazing in the business of hospitality, that he was so hospitable. Good doco.

Phil has a heroic amount of empathy to manage the tolerance involoved for what he's doing. Being in the US I couldn't stop thinking about how this wouldn't be possible due to city/state government, local police, gun ownership and citizen entitlement here. This is uniquly functional due to the laws, politics and sociology of their country.
I feel so much sympathy for people living on the fringes in the US because of the gun factor. It’s terrifying to imagine.

To the staff, U are all absolutely fkn amazing ppl!!! What ya's are doin is much needed & not as common as it should be anymore... As ya's know, we all have a story & my family & I have endured this ourselves, not for 10+ yrs now, it's also not the ritz or the hilton, but it's home to many who have needed a bed at times, So it really pulls on the heartstrings in a great way, to see what U are giving ppl, very noble & something that is rarely offered on that scale & the simple, narrow minded need to catch up with reality, this really is part of everyday life & society, whats become of us if we fail to have some human bloody compassion & respect enough to pass on to another human being some hope!!! Much respect, U guys are legends xo

There was a time where if an owner ran a cobbled together residential property like this the right way, signing the resis up with Centrepay, providing a minimum of board requirements, and utilising volunteers, they could call themselves a not for profit government/charitable/altruistic project, and if they kept the place running properly with the financial authorities the project owners made a tidy sum each fortnight without much outlay. No TV though- no air-conditioning, no luxuries of any sort whatsoever. They flipped the narrative on that and made the clients feel grateful for every minute they were allowed and allocated to stay there. No drawing on walls, room checks daily, punishments meted out for infringements. This fellow didn't register that he's basically running a large residential child care for very troubled, dependent, low functioning adult children. Plus he can't just leave it in the hands of his staff to cope with the behavioural stuff 24/7 if he is paying them and they are not trained mental health workers. It's just not fair on them. They get paid minimum wage I'd say, and there's no structure as to who is taking care of what. It's a recipe for stress, resentment and disaster should behavioural flare ups occur, which they inevitably will, as these poor people bless them , would all have been outpatients in Plenty Psychiatric hospital thirty years ago, or in and out of detox or prison.

Alot of independent low rate hotels and motels are being used to house the homeless. In the U.S.A. they are unofficially section 8 (public housing).
Yep. If you swapped the accents around, this place could easily be one of the many places I stayed at in my younger years.
Free housing. Section 8 you gotta pay and it's below market but not cheap.

I stayed in a similar place in the USA for six months. It was a step up from this as there were welfare families with kids staying there. Most everyone had at least one person employed, but still couldn’t afford regular housing. There was a wait list to get in the motel. I had the smallest room on the end corner of the top (4th) floor. I improved the place with my own linens, curtains, repaired the toilet, painted the walls, cleaned out the heater and got rid of the colony of roaches living behind it. But I didn’t bother replacing the TV which was regularly stolen. I got a used safe which I hid behind the water heater for a few valuables. The things I hated were the druggies nodding on the balcony, leaving needles and condoms around, and hearing swearing and loud music, oh, and when the prostitute used the room next door and I could hear everything. Management didn’t do nothing because that was how the rent got paid. I got myself earplugs and noise blocking earphones. Kid noise didn’t bug me. Kids need to run, play, laugh or cry. Strange coincidence, the owner had epilepsy and had to work around it. Running a motel was doable. I used to get off my rent for sweeping the balconies and collecting the trash that people just tossed out the door. Not my preferred place to live, but better than the streets, a shelter, or in a tent in the winter.
Adults need to run, play, laugh and cry too you know! I have also stayed in places like this which are inhabited by transient beings that are somewhat broken due to my drug problems. We're not all bad. I'm always polite and respectful towards my neighbours and make very little noise. I was always grateful for the help I received and it is a shame that other people with similar issues take these things for granted and ruin it for the rest of us. As for the earplugs, they are an absolute necessity and made my life so much more peaceful!

Phill and Karen..... You are such lovely people. Most people could not be bothered by these people. You see them as human beings who have had obstacles and made a few wrong decisions ( we all have, let's face it!) and you have given them a chance to have their own home without all the predujuce, of not being as "socially acceptable" as others.Theyre not bad, I know the place closed down but don't blame ALL of them. I stayed here as a young, silly, cheap tourist. It was definitely an experience. I met a few interesting people and even made a friend. Im glad i was open minded, i still think about that memory today and the stay itself was actually nice and i had a lovely room. We really need more places like this.

Maybe the guy asking how many other guys would stick around is mentioning it not to manipulate the poor woman but to emphasize his (main) selling point as he knows that he does not have many. When people get sad as a result of a family/health crisis "friends" are indeed often nowhere to be found...

This is very sad. l am hoping maybe it got knocked down to build crisis accommodation appartments like PHil wanted so he could continue helping others. people running the stay inn motel are doing an awesome job.respect for them all.but the residents should treat the place as their own home and the staff as family members.

Mate.. ALL the motels nowadays in Victoria are mostly homeless people or recently released inmates.. the Salvation army or whoever pays for most of it

Omg i got sent here when I was 17 and had nowhere to go :(( I had NO IDEA this is what it was like. I am Sooooo glad I had no idea this is what it was like. Scary stuff .
