Dr.Berg...you are the best. You have changed my life. Lost 100lbs in the last 6 months. God bless you and your loved ones. I had this thing going in my mind since yesterday and today i saw ur video that clarified my doubts. Thank you so much sir.
This was the best explanation of protein intake on keto that I’ve seen yet! It’s been my biggest question since starting keto a month ago, thank you, Sir!
I'm so confused when I check my protein intake in many different protein calculators each of them give different amounts of protein that I should take in a day. Love your info, Dr Berg! Straight to the point and easy to follow
Thank you for clarifying the amount of calculated weight of protein is PER DAY (instead of per meal). I learned previously from you that too much protein spikes insulin, bouncing you out of a keto-state. THANK YOU for the videos!!
Great info. I started a modified keto diet approximately 11 days ago, due to me feeling tired and previously testing as pre diabetic. According to my home testing kit my blood sugar has dropped down considerably but I am still in the pre diabetic range. After watching your videos for quite sometime, I did not completely understand the keto diet that you have been explaining and rejected it to some degree. Today is August 1, 2020, and after watching this video and another one in wee hours of the morning entitled, a 'light bulb' turned on in my head and now I understand a whole lot better as to what you're talking about regarding the keto diet. I AM NOW ON BOARD AS OF TODAY. I still have some learning to do, but surmise that I have the basics now. With your continued help and products, I will be able to learn a lot and reach my goals. I hope you get this message. Thank you.
You always seem to have a video I'm searching for. I really appreciate all that you for for all of us who are trying to do the best thing for ourselves, but just don't always know what to ask. Thanks again.
I have lost almost 30 lbs since Dr Berg's Intermittent fasting video that just popped up on my time line 10 weeks ago. (Day after Super Bowl). My was changed that day !! Thanks Doc and God bless
Nice Video clip! Excuse me for butting in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Ponnordaz Impressive Remedy (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a great one off guide for discovering how to pack on solid muscle mass minus the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my close friend Aubrey got amazing success with it.
This makes so much more sense. In previous videos, you recommended 3 to 6 oz (84 to 168 g) per meal. For me, this was too much to achieve. Now calculating protein need according to one's own body weight is a relief!
If you require to take 168 g in a day, 168÷4= 42g per meal. 84 to 168 g per meal is now corrected to 42g. There is no protein storage in our body. So protein is required to be taken about 4 times a day. Whey protein shouldn't exceed 0.55 g /kg of your lean body weight at any time, according to the "Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy" book. Anyhow it is safe to take any other protein below 40g in a meal. If more than 40 g it may damage kidneys.
Jeronimo Romero this is a bad calculation Cos it’s only fit for fat people If you let say eat 3,5k calories on OMAD then you need to eat 90% or more from fat With this calculation. And this makes no sense unless you wanna do medical ketosis cos you have cancer or epilepsy Just ignore the weight of the protein and eat put to 25% protein from meat and 70% fat from meat if you are lean You will still be in ketosis all day
Hello Dr Eric Berg. Thanks for the video. I have one question. I just started doing intermediate fasting one meal a day 23 / 1. I am 175 lb and I work out and I would like to put on at least 5 lb of muscle. I don't have that much body fat on me. I just recently went vegan the same time, two weeks ago. But decided to eat eggs. You started to mention in the video how much protein for intermediate eating but didn't mention how many grams to eat. Can you please tell me how many. Thanks
How? Think he did a good job there. And I am not even used to imperial metrics. Keep your carbs to a minimum, don't eat too much protein. Gradually cut back on the fat you ingest, and your body will burn its own fat. Worked for me. Went from 29% to currently about 11% (edited: body-fat), with more muscle mass than before.
I'm still confused because he said you need less w/ intermittent fasting and I still don't know what that number is. I do 2 meals so is the .3 something #. ?????
I got confused by this too. Is he saying we won't need as much protein per meal or that we don't have to divide the number of protein per meal when doing 3 meals a day into 2 meals? Meaning...I can have between 64 - 125 grams a DAY, which breaks down to 64 - 125 grams per meal when doing a 3 meal day. Will I now divide the 64-125 grams by 2 to get how much I eat for 2 meal day? That would mean 32-62 grams per meal if ONLY EATING 2 MEALS A DAY.
Some of the confusion is from so many people using the word "protein" when they mean meat. Protein is not a menu item. You don't usually have a 3-6 oz serving of protein, you have meat. Don't be shy of saying meat. Those few vegans can make their own conversions instead of confusing the large majority of people.
Bill DeWitt Exactly! He's not talking about a big heaping pile of protein isolate powder sitting next to your broccoli. I don't know what's so difficult to understand.
There are tons of proteins and fats in plants, which arent unhealthy like meat and dairy. Plant based keto is great, but people switching to just meat and dairy are exchanging weight loss for their lives. If youre aiming for aesthetic progress- Meat/fish takes two days to digest, so if your diet is completely meat your gut is always going to be full of the rotting carcasses of murdered animals. When I was an omnivore my gut just had this bloated appearance compared to now
Since you believe the old false rumor that meat takes two days to digest, I suspect you are full of other misinformation. Why don't you take your crazy ideas to the vegan forums where myths and bad logic are welcomed?
Thanks for clarifying this Dr. Berg. I think it’s confusing for most of us is because when you say « ounces of protein » you mean ounces of meat or fish. And then when you say « grams of proteins » you mean grams of actual protein content xD.
OK but Dr Berg, am I eating my g/lb in TOTAL body weight or measured lean body mass? example: I weight 230lbs, my lean body weight is 178lbs. Which do I target for daily protein??
I feel like I’m the only one that doesn’t get caught up in macros... too much work. I prefer freedom especially since I’m OMAD. My body tells me what’s enough
Well, you can loose weight purely by eating OMAD in a deficit aswell (or maintain, depends on what you want to achieve), but to enter ketosis it is crucial to keep track of your macros. It is such a hassle tho, I agree.
When people are very insulin resistant, and most likely very fat, they can't do that. Their hormones (insulin, hunger and satiation hormones) are completely out of wack and they need to reset before starting IF and building up to omad. When they start and eat 3 meals a day they need to calculate macro's, because otherwise they would eat way too much without even noticing it. Just like is said in this video, beginners need more fat because otherwise they'll be very hungry. Dr. Fung has some amazing lectures on youtube where he explains how obesity isn't a conscious choice, but the consequence of these hormones being out of balance.
Ok now i am confused In another vdo u said the body will never burn muscles before fat n in this vdo u r saying it will burn protein first ie muscles? Pls clarify
Hi Dr Berg, I have been doing keto and looking to transition to 2 meals a day from 3 meals. Per day I was having 150g of protein per day, whilst doing 16/8 fasting and sticking to keto macro percentages. This was manageable over 3 meals. However, how do I go about doing this in 2 meals? Im worried about losing muscle if I dont consume enough protein. Yet it's very difficult to eat that amount only in two meals?

Great video, Dr. Berg. Thank you! So good to hear about wellness meats. I love that they have the hamburgers you mentioned, but with offal added. And pemmican and liverwurst! Yum!
I've just run across "protein cycling" as a method to increase autophagy while doing IF. Dr. Berg, could you please do a video on protein cycling in conjunction with keto and IF? THANKS!!! You're insight is ever so much appreciated!!!
Hey Dr Berg, you mentioned that protein goes way down when you eat 1 meal per day, would you be able to specify exactly how much protein you would target for that meal if you are physically active every day?
It’s been a years and I’m still waiting on this answer. He said to divide it by 2 if doing two meals but didn’t speak on one meal at all. If I eat my daily protein in one meal, it spokes my insulin
Ppl have been asking the same question under these comments for years and you’ve never answered, which is how much protein if eating OMAD. You said the amount needed changes but didn’t state anything specific
"You can do the conversions". I wouldn't do them either. "I'm stressed". Was that code for something? Ahahahahaha, You give us everything we need for free already! Nothing but Love for you Dr. Berg. You do so much for us.
My personal calculations (flawed?) If I weigh 200 lbs then I should have 72 to 140 grams-protein/day; Which means: .. 11 oz to 21 oz of BEEF per day. (units: 6.5/oz) or 12 to 23 EGGS per day, or 4 - 8 eggs/ 3meals (units: 6g/egg) or 12 to 23 slices of thick cut Bacon, or 4 - 8 slices/ 3meals (units: 6g/slice) ...... that's WAY more than I have been eating ....... Clearly I NEED to tune my program a bit What I have been doing: 1 meal per day: 5 to 10 oz of beef w 3 oz of cheese;; or 3 to 4 eggs w butter;; or 3 slices of bacon w 2 eggs (per meal)(one meal a day) sometimes having one snack of PB & chocolate/stevia, and all the decaf java w heavy cream that I want. my calculations on FATS: (assuming eggs have the right ratio of fat to protein 0.833) at 200lbs I should have: 60 to 117 grams of fat per day Which means that I should have: 120 to 234 oz of BEEF per day (units 2g/oz) .... that would be: 7.5 to 14 lbs of meat per day. WHOA. NOT gunna happen to much Protein!!! or 12 to 23 Eggs or Bacon per day, or 4 - 8 eggs/ meal (units: 5g/egg) or 12 to 23 slices of thick cut Bacon, or 4 - 8 slices/ meal (units: 5g/slice)
Then why did I lose weight on the Atkins diet? I was the leanest ever. I mean I realize that it wasn't a healthy diet, but why did I lose weight on a high protein diet?
Why would the body have evolved to ever burn protein first? I know people argue muscle is the "expensive metabolic furnace" so the body would rather have less muscle to support in a time of famine, but I still can't imagine burning the muscle that would help you hunt for food or keep you functioning, instead of body fat which is specifically energy storage.
Sc S I agree. And this is why his explanation of what gets burned off doesn't make sense to me (everyone else seems to be confused about the arithmetic but that's not the questionable part). He basically says if you don't eat enough protein, your body will go after it as an energy source after depleting glucose and before consuming the fat. So then if you over eat protein then what happens??? It still goes after it as an energy source before consuming the fat, therefore it never consumes the fat until all protein is depleted? Seems like in order for his explanation to make sense he left out something to make his idea work, and I'd be curious what that is.
If I remember correctly, in my Biology clasd back in school they taught us that protein is easier to break down than fat so the body actually saves energy by going after the protein in our body...
Fat is very hard to burn from a chemical point of view, so the body prefers prefers to burn muscle. But there's an exception : when you hibernate, you burn fat while keeping the muscles intact. We have the genes needed to hibernate, so we only need to know how to turn them on.
my understanding is that this is a misconception. Whilst the body will burn PROTEIN before turning to fat that doesn't mean it will burn through all your skeletal muscle before turning to fat. Dr jason Fung has lectures and interviews where he debunks this myth. Point being, people confuse protein with muscle.
Its like you been reading my mail... I have been adjusting protein based on my hunger and effective weight loss . this is timely and helps alot .As always thanks Doc.
0.7g/lb that's lean or actual weight? I weigh 320lb at 38% body fat, does it mean I need over 220g of protein? Or is it based on lean body mass which is around 200/lb that makes 140g of protein? Which should i follow?
go to an online calculator that will give you a "healthy range" of your ideal weight based on your gender, height and amount of muscle etc. i picked middle of the range for mine.
Raja Shahja: Yes dexa machine or other machines you go into. Weights etc. is BS. You just have to make a guesstimate. If you are keto adapting be on the low end with protein, fill up on fat. Like he says in the video.
you are mixing up your calculations. if you are measuring your body weight in lbs, then use dr bergs formula. if your track your weight in KILOGRAMS use .7 g/kg to 1.5g/ kg. it's the same thing converting over. there are 2.2 lbs in a kilogram. i.e .8 grams divided by 2.2= .3636 grams
PLEASE DR. BERG I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO MAINTAIN MY WEIGHT NOW THAT I HAVE REACHED MY GOAL. YOU JUST SAID ADD MORE FAT TO MAINTAIN THE WEIGHT. COULD YOU EXPLAIN THAT A LITTLE MORE? I AM SO WORRIED THAT I WILL START GAINING. THANK YOU.
There are many calculators out there - but I could not find one which includes OMAD TMAD options - so it would be great to have that feature as well, thank you
I have a lot of exercisie and I feel better on a little bit more protein. About .8g/lbs to 9 so about 160-180g. I can just easily tell when I didn't have enough. I literally a struggle to move or do anything, I have zero energy. Have a great day if You've read this far.
Question: what if you weigh 180pds, but want to weigh 140pds.....do you calculate for your current weight or the weight you want to achieve? Or as your weight drops do you readjust that calculation? Thanks so much for answering.
Dr Berg, if I have IF with ONE meal, should I eat all 65 g of protein AT ONCE? Second, do you mean the ideal weight or a real (excessive) weight in calculation of protein needs?
@@Drberg But if I'm obese (BMI >30) and want to LOSE WEIGHT, should I eat these 65 g per day (meal in case of one-meal diet)? I think I won't be able to lose weight without decreasing protein consumption. 65 is too much for weight loss.
@@Drberg Thank you for this brilliant video. At 04:05 you said that during IF the need in protein was decreasing (due to muscle protection by HGH, and to protein recycling). Right?
I lost 200 lbs. with only doctor bergs suggestions. It's been 5 years now and Only gained 5 lbs. Back. THANK YOU ❤️

I've just run across "protein cycling" as a method to increase autophagy while doing IF. Dr. Berg, could you please do a video on protein cycling in conjunction with keto and IF? THANKS!!! You're insight is ever so much appreciated!!!
1:15: 0.79 to 1.54 g/Kg
Thank u bro.
It’s grams per POUND, not grams per KG, as he distinctly articulated
Great video!! Will your macro calculator be "teired" Showing what your nurtritional needs are depending how many meals you are doing while IF. Thanks
Hey Dr Berg, you mentioned that protein goes way down when you eat 1 meal per day, would you be able to specify exactly how much protein you would target for that meal if you are physically active every day?
Please answer this question, thank you :)
It’s been a years and I’m still waiting on this answer. He said to divide it by 2 if doing two meals but didn’t speak on one meal at all. If I eat my daily protein in one meal, it spokes my insulin
There are some fantastic apps that do all of this too!
Oh my god I am eating a lot more protein than I need!
Absolutely!
THANKS! That is perfectly clear, and very well detailed. Dr. Berg is THE MAN!!
My personal calculations (flawed?)
If I weigh 200 lbs then I should have 72 to 140 grams-protein/day; Which means:
.. 11 oz to 21 oz of BEEF per day. (units: 6.5/oz)
or 12 to 23 EGGS per day, or 4 - 8 eggs/ 3meals (units: 6g/egg)
or 12 to 23 slices of thick cut Bacon, or 4 - 8 slices/ 3meals (units: 6g/slice)
...... that's WAY more than I have been eating .......
Clearly I NEED to tune my program a bit
What I have been doing:
1 meal per day: 5 to 10 oz of beef w 3 oz of cheese;; or 3 to 4 eggs w butter;; or 3 slices of bacon w 2 eggs (per meal)(one meal a day) sometimes having one snack of PB & chocolate/stevia, and all the decaf java w heavy cream that I want.
my calculations on FATS: (assuming eggs have the right ratio of fat to protein 0.833)
at 200lbs I should have: 60 to 117 grams of fat per day
Which means that I should have:
120 to 234 oz of BEEF per day (units 2g/oz)
.... that would be: 7.5 to 14 lbs of meat per day. WHOA. NOT gunna happen to much Protein!!!
or 12 to 23 Eggs or Bacon per day, or 4 - 8 eggs/ meal (units: 5g/egg)
or 12 to 23 slices of thick cut Bacon, or 4 - 8 slices/ meal (units: 5g/slice)
BUT, your calculator , your App, would be GREAT to have!!!! Looking forward to it!!!
I need that calculator...pleas
Just Google protein in chicken, beef, salmon etc
Thank you once again Dr Berg. A lot give advice on what to eat and what not to eat but few quantify it so well and it has worked for me.
Great. Feedback after 3 years?
Then why did I lose weight on the Atkins diet? I was the leanest ever. I mean I realize that it wasn't a healthy diet, but why did I lose weight on a high protein diet?
rmg probably lower calories than mantainenece + no sugar. I did the same thing.
Always on time! Thank you Dr. Berg! 😃
Most welcome!
Calculator? Please! Thank you ; )
Where is it?!
FABULOUS and easy to understand. How do we access your macro calculator you speak about creating
Most people are stupid
Fat is very hard to burn from a chemical point of view, so the body prefers prefers to burn muscle.
But there's an exception : when you hibernate, you burn fat while keeping the muscles intact.
We have the genes needed to hibernate, so we only need to know how to turn them on.
my understanding is that this is a misconception. Whilst the body will burn PROTEIN before turning to fat that doesn't mean it will burn through all your skeletal muscle before turning to fat. Dr jason Fung has lectures and interviews where he debunks this myth. Point being, people confuse protein with muscle.
Thank you so much. What are your best videos to beating binge eating cause I need help?
Have you checked Dr Berg's videos on cravings? Or on eating from boredom? Or because of stress?
I think I was eating too much protein. I’ve heard you speak on this countless times before but this video finally clicked with me. Thank you!!
Nice. Are you still doing healthy keto now? Feedback after 3 years?
Great work doctor
Google: protein in meat
Protein in chicken
Protein in fish
Protein in avocado
Etc.
Google itself has a calculator. Works great.
Peter Faber that's what I do with all the food I eat just Google the nutrition facts. And add it to my diet journal.
Thanks. This will made live easy.
Thank you
Omg so me 😂
Or better yet, use the free app MyFitnessPal.
Its like you been reading my mail... I have been adjusting protein based on my hunger and effective weight loss . this is timely and helps alot .As always thanks Doc.
So since im 220lbs I only need about 150g of protein a day?
Nate Fiacco yup
This is really hard to digest isn't it(no pun intended), because I always thought 1 gram of protein per pound was the general recommendation
Very helpful thank you!
0.7g/lb that's lean or actual weight? I weigh 320lb at 38% body fat, does it mean I need over 220g of protein? Or is it based on lean body mass which is around 200/lb that makes 140g of protein? Which should i follow?
calculate using your lean weight. (if you were at your ideal weight )
go to an online calculator that will give you a "healthy range" of your ideal weight based on your gender, height and amount of muscle etc. i picked middle of the range for mine.
Raja Shahja:
Yes dexa machine or other machines you go into.
Frederick John Teng When I am in a hurry, I use '1 g/ kg. body weight'.
Great video👍
THANK YOU.
Have you checked Dr Berg's videos on how to maintain one's body weight since then? Feedback?
There are many calculators out there - but I could not find one which includes OMAD TMAD options - so it would be great to have that feature as well, thank you
Cronometer now has this function.
I have a lot of exercisie and I feel better on a little bit more protein. About .8g/lbs to 9 so about 160-180g. I can just easily tell when I didn't have enough. I literally a struggle to move or do anything, I have zero energy.
Have a great day if You've read this far.
There are also other causes for lack of energy. Have you checked Dr Berg's videos on this since then?
Good info!
So if you are Adrenal body type do you need 0.7 grams of proteine x lbs per day???? Because Adrenals need higher amount of protein
Rohalbet Like added
Question: what if you weigh 180pds, but want to weigh 140pds.....do you calculate for your current weight or the weight you want to achieve? Or as your weight drops do you readjust that calculation?
Thanks so much for answering.
Still don't Kno how much protein I need
.36 x Your Weight seemed to me the minimum protein requirements for every day living.
@Ishani K Dey yes in pounds
Same here
Get an app. Punch in your weight, height etc, it will do the work for you.
Did you ever complete your Macro Calculator and where can I access it ? Thanks.
Dr Berg, if I have IF with ONE meal, should I eat all 65 g of protein AT ONCE? Second, do you mean the ideal weight or a real (excessive) weight in calculation of protein needs?
Yes, but do not forget to eat vegetables to help you cleanse your liver.
Thank u! I been searching and searching to find out the same thing.. found nothing! So happy the Dr responded
Right?
@@ZaNovuyuZhizn can i ask u how much grams u end up eating with one meal a day 😀? im a lil confuse hope u can answer since im almost in your shoes
If one is overweighted, the grams per pound should be based on the actual weight or the 'ideal' weight??
