She was asked about this interview on the Team Coco channel, and had nothing but nice things to say about Norm, and how genuinely hard she was laughing (especially because it took the heat off of her for a bad movie).
She said in an interview on "Vanity Fair" that it was like being roasted by Don Rickles: "I did 'The Tonight Show' once, and Don Rickles made fun of my father, and my father never stopped talking about it. This is my version of that. (...) I told a story about my father telling a joke at my sister’s wedding, and then Don Rickles just went off on my father being crazy, and it was the high point of my father’s life. That’s how I felt when Norm teased me. It didn’t even occur to me that it could possibly be negative. I was beside myself." Very cool!
It shows the genius of Norm that they don't pick a clip of his interview, but a clip of someone ELSE'S interview because he was such a genius, he could improv the most hilarious lines on the spot.
I've seen this clip many many tines and this is the first time I'm noticing Courtney is funny. She quick witted and funny and actually makes space for Norm and Conan. Like her comedic rhythm is very good.

I have two favorite Norm moments, this one and his appearance on Letterman right after he was fired from Weekend Update on SNL. It’s 100% hilarious but the “quisling” parts bring me to my feet every time.

@@saraanic9436 holy cow, i didnt know! I truly believe he really felt that, as anything Norm said. Gosh, I always admired Norm, this just add another fact that proves he was a great great human being. I really loved and still love Norm.
Out of all the success Courtney Thorne-Smith has achieved, being an instrumental part of the greatest late-nite talk show piece will cement her position in entertainment history.
I’m my mind she is more famous for this clip than for anything she actually acted in. This is one of the best talk show clips in the history of television.
Na it was just more like a normal interview which tend to be pretty boring. You are right about him making it something special though. You honestly couldn't have a normal interview with Norm even if you tried. You can tell Conan just loves it and Norm could bring out the more crazy side of Conan as well.
Nothing particularly wrong with Courtney, but there's a clip where she does typical celebrity interview but Al Franken is there instead and he tried to be funny. I might use that one on "replay" as my sleep tone. Night and day difference.
I remember watching this the night it aired!!! And I never forgot how hard Conan would laugh when he was with Norm. Looking back now, I understand why people are saying that Norm was a comedic genius.
To this day, the "B-O-R-E-D" quip is THEE most creative, funniest, ad-libbed line I have ever heard in my life. And the reaction it received proves that. Original comedy is so utterly rare and there has never been anything like Norm Macdonald. This horribly straight edge worlds needs him so badly. R.I.P. Norm.
@@thegameguy208 You're not getting it dude. What makes it "creative" isn't the joke itself. This isn't like you hanging around the house playing a poker game with your buddies and saying it. He's on freakin national television with million of people watching, Conan puts him on the freakin spot and he comes up with that ln literally 2 seconds. This isn't to mention he didn't fuck up the timing or the delivery. And it's also not to mention that a guy who GETS PAID to produce comedy out of nothing jumped out of his chair. When Conan challenges him to make a joke out of the title and he immediately whips B-O-R-E-D out of the clear blue sky, this illustrates what a one of a kind comedian and a first class mind Norm had. The pinnacle of off-the-cuff comedy. All comedians aspire to this.
Just like Conan said a minute before that: "And I'm waiting... because I KNOW there's more to come!!" And we never got disappointed. There always was that last extra punch coming in! ^^ RIP Normie

Its impressive that Norm single handedly made this the funniest 7 minutes in talk show history all without being either the host or the guest being interviewed.
Norm's B.O.R.E.D joke is delivered perfectly and Conan's reaction is hysterical. After his initial laugh you can see a "damn he got me again" respectful look on his face
Every time their conversation started to die down or reach an end, Norm would come in with the funniest remark possible. The best moment in talk show history; absolutely special and timeless.
You could tell it was all in good nature and she took the roasting like a boss. She didn’t get all sensitive and dramatic like some others may have. She’s truly a wonderful woman.
It's straight up mean to just bash someone's film that's about to come out. There's an unwritten rule in these shows is you can only bash a film after it's long come out and done it's box office run. That way you don't get blamed for tanking the film.
@@harizotoh7 funny, she said this week that was her favorite talk show appearance ever. I’m glad Norm didn’t conform to your rules. Plus he was absolutely right.

He had to cuz if carrot made it visible that norm bothers him , imagine what norm wud have done :D. So carrot killed two birds with one stone , appearing to be a nice person and not being in norms bad book . Jk tho
6:14...he almost says “box office poison” but in a split second he realizes that he can build up the tension and make the joke hit even harder. If he would have just blurted it out, it still would have been hilarious, but with his self control he created one of the best moments of a talk show interview I’ve ever seen. Freakin genius, man. Norm is amazing.
You are correct- he had the words, "Bo... I know what its gonna be called. If it has carrot top in it..." So, he does clarify that its a joke on Carrot Top and not her. Classy.
This is the most quintessential clip of Norm ever. Lightning fast retorts, natural, perfect. I've watched this clip dozens of times, to remind myself over the years what a true and unique comedic force Norm was.
He was so quick with the "9 1/2 seconds", and "b-o-r-e-d" lines! I wonder who among us, in that situation, could've thought of great lines like those on the fly!
"Congrats on being installed as permanent host of the Tonight Show. That's something they can never take away from you". No one did Conan better than Norm. RIP
It's all about the timing. If he says it all at once, it wouldn't be funny. Saying the first bit, waiting for the reaction, then adding "because he's a premature ejaculator" at just the right moment, that's his genius
honestly though i'm appreciating more and more how well she was able to roll with it lol she's basically being roasted the entire time and remains a good sport throughout
Shame that some actresses can’t be allowed to age. Seems very nice and a great laugh! Wonder what she is doing now? Looked her up - she’s now 53. Also said - “In 1998, she starred in the box office flop Chairman of the Board with Carrot Top.”
She had a great sense of humor about it & seems to have the personality to match. I mostly know her from According to Jim but she should've been in way more stuff than she was.
Watch the last couple minutes of Conan's interview with Kenny Rogers, he laughs even harder 😂 One of the funniest moments on this show other than this 😂

@@TK0_23_Carson was boring compared to Conan. Sure, it was a different time, and people were expected to behave differently on television, you couldn’t get away with as much. But Conan is infinitely more entertaining, and just as capable a host if not better.

But Norm, as always, didn't care and just went for the jokes. I think I saw this back when it actually aired and it was soooo funny and still is. Courtney Thorne-Smith didn't realize at the time, but she was such a gracious guest in the presence of such a hilarious train wreck, that Norm Macdonald immortalized her in this clip!
I was wondering how Courtney took the interview because this was a lot of laughs at her expense and found out she played Rebecca on Norm (his TV series). Pretty cool of him to hire her and her to take it in stride…or at least not harbor a grudge. Kudos to her for being a good sport too.
Yeah we are so used to people being soft or calling for a guy's head because of a comment, observation, or joke but Courtney was cool as far as we can tell.
You can tell Courtney knew that the movie wasn't great. Especially when Conan asks her what Carrot Top was like, the only thing she can come up with was, that he was sweet.
Here's what CT-S said in Vanity Fair very shortly after Norm died: Thorne-Smith was sitting right there! And she loved every minute of it, she told Vanity Fair Tuesday. CT-S: “Every once in a while,” she said, “I’ll run into Conan and he’ll apologize, and I say, ‘That was one of my favorite moments of my life.’ Teased by Norm Macdonald? Are you kidding? I did The Tonight Show once, and Don Rickles made fun of my father, and my father never stopped talking about it. This is my version of that.” Vanity Fair: Wait, what? Why did Don Rickles make fun of your father? Courtney Thorne-Smith: I told a story about my father telling a joke at my sister’s wedding, and then Don Rickles just went off on my father being crazy, and it was the high point of my father’s life. That’s how I felt when Norm teased me. It didn’t even occur to me that it could possibly be negative. I was beside myself. I was there to promote Chairman of the Board. I was not thrilled about having to do it, so when Norm took over, I’m like, Oh, thank you, God and Norm Macdonald. It was a blessing. Look-had I thought that Chairman of the Board was my path to an Oscar, I might have been offended. I did not. [Laughs] So it was a joy to be teased about it. Because I didn’t know what I was going to say [on the show]. I was like, Good, Norm, you take over. VF: But did the studio feel the same way, to see him pummel Carrot Top and the movie? CT-S: I have no idea. It got a lot of attention, maybe more attention than it would have gotten otherwise. You know what they say: Any press is good press. VF: Did you ever talk to Carrot Top about it? CT-S: [Laughs] No, I have not kept up with Carrot Top. No, I did not. VF: So none of this was planned? CT-S: No, no, no. Generally, when you’re the second guest, you talk to the host and have very little contact with the previous guest. Maybe during the commercial, you chat a bit. So what happened wasn’t normal, but it was delightful. That was my favorite talk show appearance by far. VF: Have you been hearing from people today about Norm? CT-S: A few people have reached out. Everyone is so shocked. He’s always been there. He did Weekend Update. He’s a part of my comedy consciousness. I feel like I just watched him on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. It’s stunning. VF: Were you a fan before your appearance on Late Night? CT-S: I’ve always been a fan of Norm Macdonald, which made it extra super thrilling. Yeah, I loved his take on things. That’s why my dad was so taken when Don Rickles made fun of him. When you’re a fan of a comedian and they make fun of you, is there anything better? It’s just heaven, ’cause you’re in their joke. They may be laughing at you, but it doesn’t matter, ’cause you’re in that moment with them. VF: Do you remember what happened immediately after the episode? Was Conan concerned you were upset? CT-S: How could he possibly have been there with me and not known I was having a good time? He’s such a nice man, and I would run into him later and he was afraid that I was offended. I told him absolutely not. You know those great nights you go out with your friends and you start laughing and you can’t stop, and you have that satiated feeling? That’s how I felt. I didn’t expect to have an amazing time, and I had an amazing time. That’s what I walked away with; just giddy with how much fun it was. I had a ball. [By the way, Macdonald was prophetic. According to Box Office Mojo, Chairman of the Board grossed less than $200,000 on a $10 million budget.]
When I heard of Norm’s death I was thinking of some of his funniest jokes and this interview was the first thing that came to my head. I think it is incredibly genius just like the man behind the joke. You will be apart of our hearts forever. RIP NORM MACDONALD
Norm's energy on this interview is magical: not an ounce of cynicism, just pure enjoyment to be there with Conan and that lovely lady... I always remember Conan saying while leaving NBC that cynicism is the worse trait someone could have and I agree. Norm jokes feel so effortlessly perfect because there's not an ounce of inauthentic sentiment in Norm. He was always thrilled to be with Conan. I really think Norm loved Conan just as much as he loved Letterman and Adam Eget. Norm's artistry may look like the stuff of legends but it is just Norm being Norm... and I think he loved being him a lot, as well. For the fans, he is the stuff of legends. Love you, Norm.

It shows the genius of Norm that they don't pick a clip of his interview, but a clip of someone ELSE'S interview because he was such a genius, he could improv the most hilarious lines on the spot.

Courtney Thorne-Smith later told Vanity Fair,
Every once in a while, I’ll run into Conan and he’ll apologize, and I say, ‘That was one of my favorite moments of my life.’ Teased by Norm Macdonald? Are you kidding? I did The Tonight Show once, and Don Rickles made fun of my father, and my father never stopped talking about it. This is my version of that.
I told a story about my father telling a joke at my sister’s wedding, and then Don Rickles just went off on my father being crazy, and it was the high point of my father’s life.
Look - had I thought that Chairman of the Board was my path to an Oscar, I might have been offended. I did not. So it was a joy to be teased about it. Because I didn’t know what I was going to say [on the show]. I was like, Good, Norm, you take over.

I have two favorite Norm moments, this one and his appearance on Letterman right after he was fired from Weekend Update on SNL. It’s 100% hilarious but the “quisling” parts bring me to my feet every time.
@james Norm made a joke about down syndrome and went on the view to apologize. It’s subtle humor but imo norm at his funniest.

R.I.P. Norm.
honestly, i disagree about it being even remotely creative, what makes it great is norm's balls to give that earnest of a delivery.

Just saw this clip a few days ago and I can’t stop watching it over and over again. RIP Norm you were one of the best. 😂😂😂
I usually don't care when celebrities die, but this one hit different, RIP Norm, the world lost one of his greatest comedian and human being
‘Box Office Poison’ The greatest movie title that never was.
Rip Norm Macdonald.
And he was right, too. Carrot Top's film was one of the the biggest flops ever.
"Well, it's official: murder is now LEGAL in the state of California."
-Norm, on the OJ Simpson verdict.
I watched that live and laughed as hard then as I am now. Norm was, and is, a legend.
@@bellofortis2020 Absolutely right.

Hey! That’s my lucky stabbin hat!!
I love at the very beginning, Norm cranes in to get in the shot...so the cameraman zooms in a touch.
Courtney Thorne-Smith didn't realize at the time, but she was such a gracious guest in the presence of such a hilarious train wreck, that Norm Macdonald immortalized her in this clip!
I think she knew what she was getting into. Norm wasn't exactly unknown at the time.
Strange it seems her career died right after this movie. Norm dead on balls accurate with "box office poison" .
@@search4truth104 her best work was in “Summer School “
She had a long run on According to Jim.
@Lars I love Summer School but she wasn't given much to work with. Any hot, tan blonde could have been in that role.
She knew the movie sucked but was probably paid very well to be on the billboard! (IMDB Rating of 2.3!).
This supports my new theory that after this, Norm went and laid down with this lady
Here's what CT-S said in Vanity Fair very shortly after Norm died:
Thorne-Smith was sitting right there!
This is my version of that.”
Vanity Fair: Wait, what?
This never gets old. I have watched this 100 times and still laugh so hard when Norm spells B-O-R-E-D.

When I heard of Norm’s death I was thinking of some of his funniest jokes and this interview was the first thing that came to my head. I think it is incredibly genius just like the man behind the joke. You will be apart of our hearts forever. RIP NORM MACDONALD
This never gets old. I've probably watched this a hundred times.
Miss you so much Norm.
His comedy is so incredible it goes over so many peoples heads. RIP Norm

@@UniversalStandard I’m very sorry that you hold this view, and also sorry for what you’re experienced has been to allow you to believe it. A lot of people are like what you describe, but some people aren’t and many of us are fortunate enough to know your words to not be true. We are ALL Norm on this blessed day!
@Half_Note You're both not wrong about the pleasure borne of helping others, but wrong that it necessarily makes altruism phony or compromised, I think that's just puritan self--mortification and suspicion towards pleasure at work, it runs deep in our culture.
That's why I like what the Buddha taught about it, he says that very pleasure is the key and you can and should leverage those good feelings to spur you to greater mental progress and being a better support to those around you. Not settle into a romantic or cynical fatalism which is, by and large the modern and postmodern response to life being shitty much of the time.
I feel like Norm was one of the few guests that really made Conan laugh. I always got so excited to see him in the line up. Norm you will be missed . The only thing that gives me comfort is you will be partying with Chris tonight!!!

I've watched this clip 100s of times. The more I do, the more I realise how blah it would have been without Norm. Conan was working hard to make it interesting but utterly wasn't going anywhere until Norm stepped in and turned it into one of the best talk show moments in history. Courtney Thorne-Smith will now be remembered fondly for having rolled with Norm's punches so well. What a beautiful moment in time.
CONAN: "Do something with that, you freak!"
NORM: "Challenge accepted."
Conan: "Do something with that, you freak."
Norm: (*eyes glow*)
He didn't just rise to the challenge, he decimated it. Watching Norm though I think his biggest talent is timing. Beyond just being funny was his delivery.
Conan LOVED the comeback
NORM: "Comedy history made"
BROTHER DAVE, GLAD CHOO TUBE DIDNT MUZZLE YOU AS OF YET! PREACH!
"You're the biggest ass that I ever met, and I love you for it." What a beautiful line. O'Brien and Macdonald...what a great comedy team!
Norm is that friend that uses humor to elevate everyone around him, while also being the coolest guy in the room. #RIPnorm
jesus daniel that is right on now that i think of other stuff with him he does exactly what you say he includes everyone
Exactly!
This is pure comedy, lightning in a bottle. I always come here for comfort. Completely hilarious.
