- Part 8 of the #96Masterclass series features DJ specialist, SpinnZinn, walking you through the Master Inserts on the Xone:96 - showing you how to insert external hardware in the master output signal path.
Some beautifully subtle digs at a certain competitor! Love it, brilliant :)
I need your help, so i want to insert a e-guitar in the master inserts. I get the signal properly and it shows on the xone 96. When i take the master output to the pa everything sounds perfect. But i would like to send the output to the computer via usb but as soon as i send it to ableton live to record, the signal is not enough loud anymore... whats am i doing wrong?
Hi mnmltunez1,
The Master insert is not included in the MST USB channels 11&12. Therefore, it is not possible to record any insert direct via USB. However, there is a workaround. The RCA record output does include the insert signal, so you can either run from this output to a third-party card or dedicated recording device. Alternatively, if you have an available line input on stereo channels 1-4, you can run into any of these and use the LN:PH switch set to LN to route the record bus via the 96’s soundcard. Please note; if applying this latter method, please ensure that the channel input selector is not set line, as this could an unpleasant feedback loop!
A final thing to note here, with analogue to digital line-up. The 96’s soundcard architecture runs at 0dBu = -14dBfs. So, the signal may appear to be lower, but this is correct. And is commonplace when integrating analogue and digital systems.
Thanks,
Luke
Why is there no way to set the recording to Post Master? Master Insert but no recording? 2 soundcards in the Xone96 but another one is needed to record?
Hi Paolo,
The Xone:96 USB sends 11&12 are fixed to master LR (pre-insert).
The RCA record out is set to post insert (as default). If you have a spare line input along with USB bus, you can crate a jumper from the record out to the spare line channel and route via the channel’s dedicated USB sends.
I hope this helps!
Best regards,
Luke
I own the pioneer efx-500 & 1000, i use this same connection (Master send/recieve), but i notice the volume drops a bit even when i configure the "decibel" outputs on the units. Am i doing something wrong? Anyone who uses the RMX-1000 do you get this same issue? Reason I ask is because im also thinking of getting the RMX-1000! Or should I start saving up for Allen and heath's next "secret project" to be unveiled at Namm on January? That "audio sync" feature on the Xone96 has me scratching my head especially when they have asked you spinnzinn about it and you said you can't talk about, yet!
Ha! Yeah, there is no doubt they are working on an EFX solution of their own. But, I don't think it's gonna' be revealed at this year's NAMM. It's probably still in the development phase. Maybe at BPM this coming Summer or at next year's NAMM.
keep in mind that both the EFX5500 and 1000 have their own input and output gain controls. Also you want to make sure you set them both to be on the 'MASTER +4 dBu' gain settings, that with the gains at 12'oclock should yield the best results
Thanks for your Videos! What is the best way to connect an RMX 1000 with XONE 96 when using TRAKTOR PRO 3? I've tried different methods but the sound is always wrong. My setup is Xone 96, 2x Traktor x1 and RMX 1000. Please give me a tip how I can best connect it. Thanks in advance!
Hi Metreveli,
The RMX is an insert device, it should therefore be connected to the master insert of the Xone:96.
Just as the video explains.
Best regards,
Luke
If I plug in a Pioneer RMX 500 to the Master insert will I hear the Effects being applied in the Headphones? Thanks for you help
Hi Klique eject,
Yes, if the headphone out is assigned to the master bus, then you will hear the effected signal.
Thanks,
Luke
I’m using the Master Insert with the RMX 1000 but with high quality balanced TRS cables. There is a noticeable reduction in sound quality (not huge but certainly not of the same clarity), which isn’t suitable for big clubs / sound systems - a couple of questions;
1) could this be due to using balanced cables instead of unbalanced cables?
2) does the master insert require the use of the A/D D/A converter in the RMX? I was previously told that the converter isn’t quite up to scratch. Could this also be a reason for the reduction in sound quality?
Thanks!
Hi Ian,
The Xone:96 master insert does have balanced sockets. If you were to run form a balanced system to unbalanced the only difference will be level, that’s because the system will lose the cold side of the signal, this will basically result in a loss of half the signal (-6db). But it will not colour the sound or make it seem apparently different in the context of “sound quality”.
The only thing that can make a difference in colouring sound is what ever is processing the signal.
If you are saying that when you remove the pioneer it sounds better, then don’t use that particular device if it is not to your liking.
I hope this helps!
Luke
Hi Luke,
Thank you for getting back to me.
Would the master insert require the use of the A/D converter in the RMX?
Compared to no RMX, the sound is certainly muddier but I can’t quite work out what’s causing this.
I’ve noticed that the pros tend to have 2 RMXs if using the Xones, which I am guessing are pre-insert to the mixer, so maybe that is the way forward!
Cheers,
Ian
Hi Ian,
Besides the built-in sound card the Xone:96 signal path is purely analogue, whereas, the RMX is a digital FX unit. The RMX will convert on the way in (A/D) and on the way out (D/A).
When the “pros” are using two units, I would imagine they have one running with each of the playback decks, whereby you would insert each RMX between the deck and mixer.
Cheers,
Luke
@@xonedjofficial Thanks Luke - that helps a lot!

Hi, Ive realized that if you use a master fx unit on the master inserts you can't record your fx over the USb (Channels 11/12). Any workarounds?
Hi,
Thanks for the message.
To capture a recording post master insert on the Xone:96 you can use the RCA record output in a couple of ways.
Firstly, you can run from the 96 record out to the computer’s internal audio interface on the headphone socket and use additional recording software for recording.
Second option would be to run out of the 96 record output, back into a spare stereo or return channel on the 96. Make sure the fader is turned down on the channel you are coming back in on. Set send-1 to pre-fade and set up USB channel 9/10 (send-1) in the software as your record bus. This will now capture a post-insert feed over USB.
I hope this helps!
Kind regards,
Luke
@@xonedjofficial Thanks for reply. I will route audio to separate recorder out of record out on 96. Im using all six channels for audio as well as both send/returns for fx. Bit annoying as it is so easy to record over USB. Strange design choice to not allow recording of master fx I must say. Suppose it is what it is ;)
Is the booth output pre or post master insert? I saw a PX5 video where SpinnZinn mentioned that the insert did not affect the booth output. Is it the same on the 96?
Hi Paul,
Sorry for the delayed response.
Yes, the Xone:96 insert works pre-booth booth out, as well as, pre-master 1&2 out.
The block diagram for the Xone:96 can be found on page 34 in the user guide. This is helpful for understanding signal flow and routing.

In the User Manual the only listing is INSERT RTN: Unbalanced (MONO)
If one were to use unbalanced TS - SND & RTN on both left and right points, will the one maintain stereo signal flow?
PS: will the Master Insert affect RTN A/B?
Thank you.
Hello drewdubs,
Thanks for the message.
Balanced and unbalanced signals have nothing to do with the separate L/R components of a stereo signal.
It is fine to use a TS connector on a balanced socket, it just means that the signal will be unbalanced and will not be able to reject any unwanted RF from the signal. Though if your cable runs are less than two metres, there is not much you should be concerned by.
The master insert will affect all signals that are sent to the master output, If RTN A/B are sent to the master out then they will go through the master insert point.
I hope this helps!
Kind regards,
Luke
Xonedjofficial Thank you for your response. I wanted to expand on the listing in the User Manual saying only MONO.
What happened to the Smily faces? :)
Im thinking about getting a rmx1000 for the 96. I really want some way of being able to always see my master bus level(plus fx be good ;) ). It really sucks the meter switches to cue on 96. Would a rmx1000 meter always show the level on master bus(obv set to unity gain)? I presume it would always show it.
Hello,
Thanks for the message,
The master bus VU level is a reference to everything running to or affecting the master bus/output. With this in mind, we can say the master insert obviously has an affect on the output level. If the reading were to be pre-insert, then it would not give a true representation of what the master output is running at.
This is not something that will be implemented as it would not be in line with any sound engineering standards.
Kind regards,
Luke
@@xonedjofficial thanks for reply. However what id really like to know is would the (input) meter on rmx1000 always be showing a level? My hope was to set the input gain on rmx to unity then use its meter(s) for my master reference. I generally have things cued up so don't have a master meter running all the time due to 96 switching to cue.
Hey! How can I effect only Channel 1 with the rmx 1000?
Hi 12x12 Techno GER,
Thanks for the message.
To route, any singular channel from the 96 you need to set the FX device on one of the two sends that are available on the 96, then return into one of the four available returns.
Please note, using digital devices, such as the RMX will introduce round trip latency on the wet affected signal, this will then present an undesired phasing effect when mixed over the dry signal. It is, therefore, best to use this type of effect on an insert.
Kind regards,
Luke
@@xonedjofficial thank you 🖤
Does anyone know if xone 92 trim or gain knobs have a full sound kill.
Hi Seabass Luna,
Thanks for the message.
The Xone:92 Trim will attenuate down to about -10dB. This control cannot be used to cut the signal. For this, we advise using the faders.
Best regards,
Luke
@@xonedjofficial how come my friend has the same older one and it cuts the sound completely
Saludos pero quisiera todo en español ya que dese sacarle el 100 % a la mixer xone 96 saludos desde Mexico
Wow. Can someone maybe please tell me how I can setup my Settings (audio channels and effects) in Ableton to sent the effects to channels 9/10 and 11/12 ?????
I would love to learn how I set this up exactly how spinzinn did this ?
I use Traktor on 4 decks on my xone 96. That already works now.
But I also want maschine and Ableton running on two separate channels. And of course the effects (reverb and delay out of Ableton) connected so that I can use the sents on my 4 Traktor channels. HOW??????
You can use this video we've done with the PX5 to teach you how to set up Ableton as an external FX unit. Although the video is focused on the PX5 the same principals apply when using the 96. We'll get SpinnZinn to do a 96 specific video when he gets back from his USA tour later this month.
AH super. Any link for this video about iT ?

Hey can you tell me if it‘s normal to loose signal quality using the RMX1000 on Xone:96 like this?
I believe it doesn‘t work very good
What about to make xone 92 tutorials?. Thx so much, saludos.
What do you want to learn about the Xone92?
@@xonedjofficial the idea here is to compare mixers, that's why I'm here. So if you dont upload xone 92 videos it's difficult to choose between. Thx for your response. Blessings. Jean
@@xonedjofficial how to connect Xone92 and RMX-1000 properly without phaser/flanger issues applying effects. Only X-Pad works fine. If you can explain would be fantastic.

@@sergiemuzik I don' think it can be done, thats why master insert on Xone 96.If you use the pre you can bring the fader down on the channel yr using and play signal through return without flanging.
My frustration is only color. Please 92's color!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, the silver has grown on me. I rather like the contrasting colors of the X96 next to my NXS2s.
Plus it's a WHOLE LOT easier to see in the dark.
We arrived at the same conclusion as +risquedj after taking several different face plate colours to some of our favourite venues and testing them out in the low light conditions.
@@xonedjofficial I went from a silver 92 to a 96. Thankfully, I missed the whole grey mixers thing, and I'm happy about that.
