      I really wanted cheese sticks the other day and I went to get some. It said something like 200 kcal on the packet and I was sure it can't be right, but the whole reason I went to the store was to get cheese sticks so I bought them. I went home, I ate all of them and felt full. I knew I had eaten more than 200kcal but it wasn't until I ended up using the container to spew cherry pips in that I noticed it said "200kcal per portion, one portion is 30g. Contains 3 portions." on the side in english, and on the top it said 80g in my native language. First of all, who in the living fuck eats 30g of cheese sticks and stops? Second, was my snack an interdimensional creature that changes its volume by 10 grams depending on which hemisphere it is currently being consumed on? I should stop eating that junk tbf.

      Toxihex well they are estimates lol, however sometimes companies will make the total higher on purpose so you go buy more for that serving size. Idk that’s weird hahah.

      Yes. The quoted calories on a pack of crisps etc is always per serving which is a very small amount but if you aren't aware you will think you can eat a family size packet and only be getting 150 calories. Also if a serving size has less than a certain amount of trans fat they don't have to list it and can even say the product is 'no trans fats'

    • @Msfinable
      @Msfinable 5 лет назад +5

      @sequinsmtg 5 лет назад +105

      That’s actually 100% how it works. Serving sizes don’t mean you can’t eat more than one serving they’re tied to the food pyramid where you’re supposed to have so many servings of each type of food today. So you can eat all your servings of grains in one sitting if you want.

    • @saarahjanexo417
      @saarahjanexo417 5 лет назад +37

      Kelsey Doyle what are you talking about? Serving sizes are the amount of calories and percentage of fat carbs and protein that one serving of food consists. So you can make sure you’re eating the correct amount of calories depending on weight and activity level, and so you can track the amount of each food group you’re eating because we all need different percentages of those.

    • @sequinsmtg
      @sequinsmtg 5 лет назад +6

      Sar Bear Serving sizes are a portion of food. Multiple portions of food make up your daily consumption. Not sure where I lost you on that. Serving sizes will have associated nutritional value like the amount of carbs in a serving but the amount of carbs doesn’t define what a serving is. You’re supposed to eat multiple servings of grains, vegetables, fruits, protein, and fats per day. There’s no law that says you can’t eat 3 servings of fruit out of the recommended 5 per day during breakfast. Like I genuinely don’t know why you’re lost....

    the "serving size" is just a unit of measure for that particular item packaged in that particular way--if that makes any sense. It is not a suggested portion size. It is just a way to know the calorie/nutritional break down for that unit of measure.

    • @datsweggybruh8775
      @datsweggybruh8775 2 года назад

      It's also a marketing tactic. For the food to seem healthier than it is by making the serving sizes super small so that the other numbers look better. Someone is way more likely to buy a container that says "80 calories per serving" than "250 calories per serving" even if the serving sizes aren't realistic.

      If I’m a male weighting 90kg my minimum daily caloric intake will be different from another male weighting 80 or 100kg so there’s no way the package could give a specific portion size for all people. Besides your BMR can and should be calculated based on several other details of one’s life such as amount of weekly exercise, height, weight, etc etc the BMR is the amount of calories your body uses to function in a regular day. So yeah, the package is not right for everyone and a 2000kcal diet is not the norm for everyone too :)

    In the US, food labels usually say the servings are based on "a 2000 calorie diet." What many people don't realize is that a lot of people need more or less than 2000 calories. It's crazy!

    • @lottaoinonen233
      @lottaoinonen233 5 лет назад +16

      Yes but 2000 is the average and so if you have 2000 diet and there are told how many % the food is of the daily goal, i think it's very helpful and also its easy to count more or less if you have another than 2000

    • @annaleabrown4588

      The US food recommendations were based on experiments the US did to North Korean POWs during the Korean War in the 1950s. What is recommended is what was necessary to keep the POWs in average health, who did not do any work. Therefore, it really is bunk.

    • @annaleabrown4588
      @annaleabrown4588 5 лет назад +7

      Alternatively, I've found if I eat the US food pyramid foods, and servings, I gain a ton of weight. Way too many carbs, I think. When I tried, I honestly had a hard time eating all those carbs at every meal. Like, take breakfast. The US wants you to eat a bowl of cereal in milk, have two pieces of toast with jelly and butter, a piece of fruit, and a glass of orange juice. Way too much carbs and sugar in that, and not near enough protein. I find I do best with one protein, one carb, and one or two veggies at every meal. Scrambled eggs with tomatoes and spinach and half a slice of toast is pretty perfect, at least for me. If you send your kids to school for breakfast here, they most likely give them a package of mini-muffins and a little thing of 1% milk.

    • @NaeOnYT
      @NaeOnYT 5 лет назад

      @@lottaoinonen233 It definitely is helpful! But a lot of people don't realize that 2000 calories is only applicable to maybe half of the population. Recommended portion sizes are a way for companies producing refined food to market their products as "less than x calories" or "less than x grams of fat" or "less than x grams of sugar". Basically it means they can use the portion size to make their product look better than it is.
    They will end their claim with an asterisk, and in fine print it will say "per portion" or "for 1 portion size". You then have to check the back of the packaging to see what they consider a portion size.
    If a company makes the recommended portion size smaller they can use that to make their product sound healthier than it actually is.
    Portion sizes and their calorie, carb, protein and fat count make it difficult to compare foods.
    If you want to compare foods in the best way possible, check the nutritional info for 100gr of that product and see if that in any way influences how much you eat of that food.
    Portion sizes are also often based on a 2000kcal diet, and often within a certain framework from nutritional guidelines.
    But afaik producers don't necessarily have to work with those standards (this may depend on the country), and can make up their own portion sizes.
    For some items nutritional guidelines may have no recommended portion size because the food is either so niche or so unhealthy that they do not recommend you eat it at all, or all they said about the product is "consume sparingly" without a recommended portion size.

    • @SamirCCat
      @SamirCCat 5 лет назад

      Or because the product is healthy!! Or just because they're too lazy to write it out. In my country most things didn't have portion seizes 10 years ago but it's coming more and more. Which is disturbing for us trying to be positive to food and not get stuck in eating disordered thinking again :-(

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 5 лет назад +2

      @@SamirCCat Note : I speak from the perspective of the Netherlands, but similar things are happening in the UK and the US.
      I didn't mean to say that manufacturers use that deceptive tactic on all foods.
      The problem is that they do use it on many foods that just plainly are not healthy, which is obvious to people who know a little bit about nutrition but sadly the general public does not.
      Now you could argue, from an anti eating disorder perspective, that there are no good or bad foods.
      Whilst I find that a fairly wholesome mindset it also isn't 100% true.
      Take for example breakfast cereals, granola bars, baby food and "breakfast biscuits" (a type of cookie that is supposed to be able to replace a regular breakfast, it's marketed at people who don't like to have breakfast), those are the type of items that manufacturers use the deceptive tactic on the most in my country.
      There are different ways to make and market these products, often there is too much sugar and too little fiber in them and it would be better to just eat a sandwich.
      They typically try to represent their products as having less sugar, having more fruit, more fiber and more vitamins and minerals.
      For the sugar content they use the portion size tactic, for things like fruit content or fiber they try to make you think there's more of it in there than it really is, and there have been some issues with incorrect fortification practices regarding vitamins and minerals.
      They give these products a sort of image of health, and most customers fall for it.
      Registered dietitians already knew these products weren't as good as advertised, so they were recommending against them in their practice.
      Consumer agencies picked up on it but couldn't really do anything (like a lawsuit) against these huge international corporations but they made sure to televise it so the public was more aware.
      Then the Dutch equivalent of the FDA picked up on the deception and made some of the manufacturers pull some of the items from the shelves.
      At most these corporations got a slap on the wrist by the government.
      They have to pay a fine, but that's small change for them.
      The problem to fight this kind of misleading marketing is that it often falls within a legal grey area, and some of it is actually breaking the law.
      Another problem is that these corporations keep doing the same thing but with other or new products.
      When the government finds out the corporation has to pay a fine and pull the product, but the fine is nothing compared to the profits they make from the misleading marketing so they don't really have an incentive to stop.
      Attempts have been made to raise consumer awareness. For example the government is trying to find some kind of system that can quickly show a customer with no knowledge of nutrition if a product is healthy or not.
      For example they've tried the "stop light system" where they use red, green and yellow to highlight good or bad aspects (judged by Dutch national nutrition guidelines) of the product on the front of the box.
      Health conscious people would then know to avoid products with a lot of the red brackets on the boxes.
      But this system isn't working well yet, so I think it is much easier to just read the ingredients and nutritional value per 100gr.

    • @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
      @itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 5 лет назад +2

      @@SamirCCat Products that are already healthy don't need that kind of deceptive marketing. That is why you are not likely to see this kind of marketing on fresh fruit and vegetables.
      This was never about healthy food, but producers are trying to make them seem more healthy than they really are because if you can convince a customer that a cookie is not a treat but a healthy breakfast option they will buy more of it.

    • @SamirCCat
      @SamirCCat 5 лет назад

      @@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 I understand what you mean however I have great difficulties imagining people know absolutely nothing about nutrition. In my country (Sweden) our problems with overweight is increasing but we still get education in school about nutrition and health etc. At least when I went there, haha... It's sad to see how big corporations bend the law, but they do in so many ways, like not paying taxes because the base is in another country etc. They have no moral at all in their body, they just think about money. It's sad.
      Lastly, what's healthy food for some isn't always healthy for others. I have a stomach illness that makes it very difficult for me to eat fibres, and I always check the fibre ingredients to see it's not too HIGH. There are people who have troubles with underweight for different reasons, and for them eating a snack with a lot of sugar/fruit is good because it's rich in calories. Basically, if you don't have any vitamin or mineral dificencies and have a healthy BMI, don't think about food too much. Use common sense, don't eat 10 cookies every day, but don't be AFRAID of food and using a red light-system in your country seems like a HORRIBLE signal that some food is forbidden and that is very unhealthy thinking. The people taking in the propaganda about healthy food is not the overweight people that need it, but the young guys and girls with low self esteem and body dysphoria. It feeds right into the increase in eating disorders. Having marketing some food as red is a horrible idea and I hope no young impressionable minds take too much damage. The overweight people are still going to buy the sugary stuff because they crave it on an emotional level as a coping mechanism from stress/depression/anxiety. Instead of working with the actual food overweight people need to work on their relationships TO food and their emotional cooping skills.
      Sorry, this was long. I hope you understand. No food is bad in the right, moderate amounts. Never be afraid of food.

      @@SamirCCat You have very good points, especially about underweight people who might benefit from the calorie dense, sugar laden foods that are generally not a good choice for the general population.
      I find it difficult to imagine so many dutch people are ignorant about nutrition too, but the government thinks it's necessary to protect them from misleading marketing.
      I do know that a lot of people still think a sugary cereal is a healthy breakfast. No thoughts about balance at all.
      The average dutch adult has a BMI of 25.4 so obviously something is going wrong, either in education or food culture.
      Very few people are underweight here so for the average person seeing these sugary breakfasts as something that is appropriate and even healthy for every day consumption isn't a good thing.
      I'm not saying that these items should be banned, but they should be seen in a proper light. Namely that they are, for the average person (who is slightly overweight and consuming too much refined sugar already) not the best choice for every day.
      People have been brainwashed by marketing, for example they see a regular biscuit/cookie as a treat that you could have with a cup of tea or coffee, but they think a granola bar is much healthier (because of the image marketing has given to it) when in reality if you were to compare the nutritional profile for both foods it could even be that that granola bar is worse.
      When I was in school it was in the 80's and 90's, we did have a little education about food but a lot of it has been overhauled now.
      I don't know what they are teaching currently, but probably a more up to date version of dutch nutritional guidelines.
      Here's a link to a picture of the stoplight system that didn't do so well in my country, I added some spaces so youtube doesn't eat the links;
      stoplight system at the bottom of a can of beverage https: // joybouwmeester . com / wp - content / uploads / 2019 / 02/ data 40929219-3863f3 . jpg ? x10141
