Oscar De La Hoya vs Pernell Whitaker 12.4.1997 - WBC World Welterweight Championship

- Опубликовано: 30 окт 2015
- Oscar De La Hoya moves up in weight to challenge Pernell Whitaker for the WBC World Welterweight title. Whitaker had established himself as a boxing legend, De La Hoya however was making a name for himself as the legend killer. More info below...
Pernell Whitaker was 41-1 coming into this fight. He had won the WBC World Welterweight title in 1993 from James McGirt and had successfully defended the title 8 times against good fighters with a combined record of 262-15-5. He gave undefeated fighters Diosbelys Hurtado and Wilfredo Rivera their first losses and fought Julio Cesar Chavez to a disputed draw during this period. In 1995 he even moved up in weight to capture the WBA World Super Welterweight title from Julio Cesar Vasquez but relinquished the belt so he could concentrate on defending his WBC Welterweight title. Whitaker was also a former undisputed World Lightweight Champion having held the WBC, WBA and IBF versions of the belt. He also held the IBF World Super Lightweight title briefly before making the shift to a permanent welterweight. Whitaker's biggest achievement however, was his 1984 Olympic Gold Medal. He was already considered by most as one of the top 5 light weight boxers of all time.
Oscar De La Hoya was undefeated at 23-0 with 20 KO's. He had moved up through the weights very quickly and was already a former WBO World Super Featherweight, WBO and IBF World Lightweight and WBC World Super Lightweight champion all within a 5 year period! Since winning his first world title in 1994 Oscar De La Hoya had fought nothing but world class competition, downing names like Jorge Paez, Rafael Ruelas, Genaro Hernandez, Jesse James Leija, Miguel Angel Gonzalez and the biggest name of them all, Julio Cesar Chavez by 4th round TKO.
Pernell Whitaker had just come off back to back wins over other undefeated fighters but they didn't have the same level of competition that Oscar De Lay Hoya had. In the third round, De La Hoya suffered a cut under his right eye from an accidental headbutt. As a result, Whitaker had a point deducted in conjunction with WBC rules of the time. The fight was very close and hard to score at times as both men were aggressive at various points. Whitaker was making better use of his jab and landed more punches overall but De La Hoya was landing arguably the bigger punches. In round 9 De La Hoya buckled from a couple sloppy looking left hooks with his knee and glove touching the canvas for a mere second but enough for the ref to call it a knock down. At the end of 12 rounds, De La Hoya had won a controversial unanimous decision. It was not the best performance of De Lay Hoya's career but the judges felt he did enough win although a majority of writers ring side covering the fighter gave it to Whitaker.
De La Hoya would remain undefeated for another 2 years before finally losing a decision to Felix Trinidad in an IBF/WBC Welterweight unification bout. De La Hoya would go on to win world titles in the super welterweight and middleweight divisions before finally retiring in 2008 with a 39-6 record.
Whitaker was adamant he won but his career would never recover from this loss. In his very next fight he won a WBA welterweight elimination match however the result was changed to a ND following a post fight drug test as Whitaker tested positive for cocaine. Following 2 more losses to Felix Trinidad and unheralded Carlos Bojorquez, Whitaker retired with a 40-4-1 record with 1 No Decision. Спорт

Yeah cuz he was 55 years old. Had he been 35, the car would have missed him by 6 inches, just like all his opponents' blows.

De la Hoya was hitting fresh air for most of the fight
You blind? And sweet pea was just back peddling all night laning 3 jabs per rd
@Alberto Rod No, you win rounds by being EFFECTIVELY aggressive, which Oscar wasn't half the time. If you miss as much as he did, it really shouldn't matter how much you charge at a guy.
@@johnd.zephyr2531 oh shouldn't it? What should matter then? The best defensive movements?
@@giovannyfernandogonzalez5517 Defensive movements are part of what's supposed to be scored in the event of hits not landing, so yes (which is in a rare case scenario but works with someone like Sweet Pea). Sweet Pea made him miss a lot and was able to return with his own, even if they weren't power shots. That's how you win rounds.

My heart wants to call this a robbery. I won't do that because it was a close fight, but I will say that I've scored it several times and I've never found 7 rounds to give to Oscar. Neither did the journalists who covered it live, because they were polled after the fight: 11 had Oscar winning, 14 had Whitaker winning. But that aside, there is no bigger testament to Whitaker's greatness than the fact that at his age, with drug problems, coming off four subpar performances (Rivera x2, Hurtado, Gary Jacobs) and clearly past his prime years, all while fighting a naturally much bigger fighter, Pernell still possibly beat a young Oscar de la Hoya. That's how great this guy was. Thank god for RUclips, we can't let the new generation of boxing fans forget someone like this.
Real shit
Larry Merchant thought Whitaker won too
Greatness recognizes Greatness.... Two Legendary Boxing Hall Famers 🏆 Congratulations to Oscar De La Hoya. Excellent Performance by both Men However. Much Respect to Whitaker RIP Champ
How would Oscar steal the 4th with a flurry that missed entirely
I Know right?
@Jimmy Garcia he missed completely stfu

I remember watching these fights live. Great era of boxing. Lampley's commentary used to bug us quite a bit.
Yeah lampley is a idiot, over zealous on something that wasn't happening in the ring or landing
Lampley was not schooled well in boxing. Believe it or not.
Sweet p was so underrated
Ah this was the fight with which the "meme before there were memes" of Jim Lampley's cheerleading for De La Hoya was in full force, giving him credit for shots that didn't land, and reaching the point of climax whenever Oscar threw a combination.
Whitaker won this fight, and Oscar tried to work the crowd by throwing a combination that missed and then putting his arm up to the pro DLH crowd as if he'd landed everything and won the round.
But Pernell clearly won this fight, and was robbed again, there's a reason DLH didn't give him a rematch.
Whitaker was right when he said Oscar wasn't really gonna give him a rematch.
Please, see this fight in slow motion. There're a LOT less punches landed than what compubox counted (or what ANY of the commentators said). Yet, I still had Oscar winning more rounds than Pernell. Oscar clearly won 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12. (They landed the same amount of punches in round 7. But Oscar landed right hands over Pernell's jab). Question: Why the cut on DLH was not a problem for DLH if he was cut as early as in the 3rd round? Why did the cut close completely? Because Pernell did not landed his Left hand at all. Again, see it in slow motion. There were many rounds where Pernell only landed jabs, and did not landed one single right hook in the whole fight. Close match. Yes. But DLH won it.
that was so annoying .. at one time they both connected and he just mentioned hoya's shot
Oscar never had 1 rematch his whole career even when he got robbed agains Trinidad he didn't seek a rematch. He fought the best and then moved on to who ever the next best guy was. He didn't win all his big fights but he might have the best resume of fighting other great fighters in boxing history. Chaves, Quarttey, Tito, Vargas, Sweet Pea, Mayweather, Pacquio, Hopkins..thats a murders row right there.
JJGerrard1980 well don’t forget the 2 fights to steroid Shane Mosley
Eduardo Rivera he didn’t win the 2nd round
De La Hoya has my respect. Not only is he a good fighter but also a good sportsman
How many rounds did Oscar know he lost, attempt to steal in the last 10 seconds, and then go to the corner hands raised, obviously to persuade judges further. He knew what was up

Purple Reign watch it with no audio and you will have a hard time finding four rounds to give to pernell (May he rest in peace).
I scored it 115-111 but most round were close
I think judges don’t like clowning
In scoring a fight, you should defer to the data first. Whitaker connected on 232 of 582 total punches or 40%; De La Hoya connected on 191 of 556 or 34%. It was a close fight, but Pernell dictated and maintained the pace throughout the fight-a subjective opinion substantiated by the punch stats. Considering the point deduction for the incidental butt, I had Whitaker winning this bout.
Same I had Whitaker taking this fight but de la Hoya fought a good fight.
He probably did win but it wasn’t convincing. Pernell didn’t come in with the right mind state and boxing was ready 2 saddle up 2 a new cash cow. Pernell could’ve stopped DeLaHoya had he been properly focused.
I definitely believe it was closer than what all the judges had!
@@baghdadwarrior039 At 25:15 what are the commentators talking about🤣 "I thought De La Hoya had it at the end" he missed all 6 punches

Whitaker make Oscar look foolish so much in the fight, he make the fast, compact punching De La Hoya miss badly at times. Easy to see Oscar frustrated with his fist pumps after throwing at end of round y he try to push Whitaker when he crouched low at end of fight.

Great Fight; RIP CHAMP 🥊
Whittaker’s entrance song made me realize what era and time this fight took place
racism in boxing: in that very same year with same ref Evander Holyfield accidentally headbuts tyson (before Tyson bit his ear) the ref mills lane doesn't deduct a point for Holyfield's head but, yet he deduct Whitaker for his headbut against "the golden boy"
That doesn't sound like racism that just sounds like a ref not paying attention
Suddenly I'm sleepy during one fight and wide awake for another 👀🤔
Black Mamba........bingo! Somebody gets it
So nobody's going to talk about the fact that Roy Jones Jr didn't give any credit to Oscar de La Hoya that was some straight BS biased ass commentary
Thanks for the uploads.
I felt too many of De La Hoya's punches were lunging, where as Pernell 'sat down' on his punches more, For the smaller/older guy this illustrates his defensive edge.
I do feel it was close though. At Welter Whitaker was oft the smaller man, this served to exaggerate his defensive counter punching style.
I thought Pernell edged it tho. The scorecards were way off. As Joe Cortez has said the position of the judges needs to be higher.
The fight was a lot closer than the judges scored it
Pernell won that most of Oscars punches missed
I scored it 115-111
You dont win by making your opponent miss you gotta land punches
Matt Real Sweet Pea outpunched him the whole fight

RIP TO A LEGEND
No way oscar won by Unan 😂😂 and it shouldve been way closer no way he lost by 5 or 6 smh maybe by 2 if anything. Honestly the headbutt was bs, but oscar fought good and a great win for him, and we see that pernell was really one of the greatest being 33 vs a 24 year old oscar. Boxing prime isn’t usually past 32-33 but he was still skilled. Both great fighters, just dont agree he won by that much. Close and good fight.
I grew up a massive Oscar fan. But 116 110 is Nevada Highway Robbery!
Much love and respect for you Whittaker.. R.I.H.
Pernell Whitaker and Floyd Mayweather. Not 1 but 2 in our lifetime that boxed having talent that was gifted from above. And the media in this country didn't like them. This fight should have been a draw. Oscar was just to strong on the inside for Whitaker to be effective but the scores were ridiculous. Whitaker's body shots were hurting Oscar but nobody says anything.
How ever count Hoyas punches landed needs glasses
Lampley doesn’t like Purnell.
He was trying to promote Oscar
50:14 Larry Merchant showing as an old man he's such a novice. Listen to what he tells Roy, and Roy, being an experienced champion tries to tell him it's easier said than done. This is why you shouldn't have a commentator who never laced up gloves. larry ignorance in that conversation shows that the stuff he said in years afterward have no real basis. I'm glad he eventually got called out on his BS. He knows very little about boxing.
I'm sorry i have to disagree with you there, fighters just aren't as entertaining like a commentator, have you heard Sergio mora commentating, he's terrible, Roy was ok, and Lennox Lewis wasn't good either, commentators are very important
@@leopalio2319 other spirts have play bybplay who have at least played the sport, even if not on a pro level. But boxing has guys who have never fought. And im not saying EVERY fighter would make a good commentator, but some would. And all of them are very insightful.
