It has to do with the way Blender handles data blocks of a different kind, it may also be that will work in the final version... or worth suggesting this to the dev team!
question. if an object is on the outliner, it will not be purged? How does blender decide if a data block has a user? I am adding a mesh on the scene, and when i purge it gets purged even though it is on the outliner, not deleted.
Great tip, it's not obvious how to clean this up.. Managing materials is a nightmare. I never would have thought to try this. Blender's way of doing it, is not intuitive at all.
I absolutely love how straight to the point this was, and that you offered multiple ways to deal with the same problem. You've really helped me out. Thanks!
Only problem is that I may not want to clean up all but just the materials! Also this is a fairly new option, the video was made with older versions of Blender not sure the command was there? But yes very much faster :) thanks for sharing
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH MATE. I have been struggling with that for more than a year! And im glad that i found ur video cuz i just started making models for my game and that problem could fucked up my namings in actions (its a little bit buggy, its not showing up in context menu with other actions always etc) and now i deleted glitchy action and i can use like a normal human behing a jump as 'jump'
Tysm!! I really wish there was an easier default way to clean up materials ;D; Edit: I just reached to the "purge" section, so nvm, that's an amazing feature lol
This video needs to be splashed on the front page of Blender's website! This has nagged me for YEARS! -- I've never found a single bit of information _anywhere_ that addresses this! I was starting to believe there was NO way to get rid of this data! -- You have been a lifesaver! :)
First of all thank you so much for your comment! The problem was annoying me too, I found the solution not too long ago honestly, before I used scripts to remove orphan data, but as you can imagine wasn’t that user friendly!
Big thanks to this... Was trying out different materials on a model .. and then when I finally decided on the proper material, I packed all data in blend file, to upload on sketch fab... the size of file was > 100 MB... and sketchfab has limit of 50MB After doing the purge, as you said in tutorial, its size is now about 30 MB.... Finally I can upload my model on sketchfab
Thank you so much, you're a life saver! I was ready to buy a new computer, turns out a 7000 polygon model of a chair resulted in 50 000 automatically applied materials. It would make my day if someone would tell me if there's a way to turn off this "feature" forever, regardless of the scene or blend file, or if someone working at Blender would realize that this is an excruciatingly annoying and time-consuming feature.
Purge all may remove also things you don't want to purge to be fair, I may do a new video including some other obscure tools and commands, thank you Hugo
Blender is very unintuitive!!! but I still appreciate the program. Thank goodness for uTub otherwise I would have given up long ago. thanks for sharing!
The goodness of Blender is in its community, lots of people out there sharing knowledge! But yes it’s not very intuitive, still many steps ahead what it was before. Once you get used to it, it’s genuinely the best.
To be honest, I found it just while exploring part or the UI that I didn’t know very well, so this answer could be: I was just being myself, a curious geek! I admit that this method must be somewhere in the documentation but, I don’t usually read the whole documentation plus a lot of new parts change with every version! Thanks for watching :)
Helpful and simple solution. The approach of going through the blend file worked for me, after I ran into problems with a material linked from another blend file, which wouldn't update anymore.
Found your video on blendernation and thought to myself: this is a really good tip, I should subscribe to this guy. But then I found out I already was!
Thanks a lot! That function is really hidden. I like Blender a lot but I always keep in mind when it comes to usability that until version 2.79 you have to use the right mouse button to select an object 😃
You are welcome, some functions are hidden or not that intuitive, but going forward the interface got much better with every release, considering this is still a free software I can't complain! Plus better community around! :)
I think blender should have tool like Maya. Where in hyper shade you can see all the materials in the scene and delete or assigns the material to whatever you want. Handling all unwanted materials is a tedious job in blender. But still the software is great...
There are a few library addons that you can use it in a similar way like the hypershade, I made a video last year about it, but the new Blender is going to handle all of that natively in an easier way :)
A 3 yr old video that solved my problem! Thanks. Why is it such a mystery? I put some materials on my model that I did not want because they used displacement, and Blender would hang for a very long time. Could not get rid of them in the file, even though my model was not using them. Whew!
usually I try to solve that kind of trouble by myself, that way I learn things that I never knew that was there, but this time couldn't 😬 Thanks a lot!
THANK YOU! This has been bugging me for a while now.
Yeah there are many obscure commands that should be more easy to reach in the UI!
Excellent tutorial! Because this has been eating at my setups for years now. Never even thought to figure out how to remove it
There’s now a clean up option in the menus, but this is still working and more granular!
Thank you! :)
yeah! this is what I was really looking for all along :)
Glad it helped :)
This is fantastic, thank you so much !
Thanks brother!
You are welcome :)
Any idea why this doesn't work with masks or movie clips?

I can only answer about the material, the purge will remove the materials not assigned to anything.
LEGEEEEEND!
Too kind
you saved me from long long project loading. thanks!
You are very welcome my friend
Immensely useful, thank you.
heyyy, also looking up tutorials? nice to see you here aswell ^^
My pleasure to be helpful!
Great tip, it's not obvious how to clean this up.. Managing materials is a nightmare. I never would have thought to try this. Blender's way of doing it, is not intuitive at all.
Blender is evolving, but yes this bothered me too for a long time :) Grazie Giulio per il commento ;)
I absolutely love how straight to the point this was, and that you offered multiple ways to deal with the same problem. You've really helped me out. Thanks!
Thank you so much! Your comments make me keep going :)
@@DanielOakfield THis tip is great but even more faster is going to "File", Clean up, Purge all ;)

Mostly still relevant 2020 in 2.9 just for anyone watching this and wondering.
Yes I may post an update on the topic!
Awesome! thank you very much for sharing :-)
Happy you like it! Thanks for watching :)

Yes especially if you are packing the texture in the file I believe the purge is useful for optimisation! Thanks for watching :)

Thanks for the quick video!
They should really just add a right click option to the materials dropdown menu lol
There are many things that can be optimised! Meanwhile... it’s interesting that every features is there... even if deep down in the UI!
Hi, great video indeed! Yes I do like it! I just subscribed! Thanks for sharing it.
Grazie mille :)
This one video changed the game and should def have over a million views by now
I appreciate your words! Thanks 🙏🏻
Good one :)
Thank so much!

cool tip, thank you
Bro... I've been using Blender for a solid 2 years now and I've only now learned how to do this........ t-thanks🤣😅😅
Yes after many years I still feel many basic functions are not really straightforward!
wow.. HOW do you find this stuff out? For instance.. I searched RUclips.... obviously there's another way.

Blender sucks when it comes to deleting objects and selecting them. Thanks for Tutorials though 👍
Not sure if it's this terrible but it's certainly improving with each new version!
Found your video on blendernation and thought to myself: this is a really good tip, I should subscribe to this guy. But then I found out I already was!

Finally, a method to kill material manually. Not by save then re-open blend file. Thank you.
You are very welcome Naoki!
Thank you for the video it helped me with the material deleting process😁 keep it up👍

If anyone is wondering, yes this still works in blender 3.5
It does! Would you be interested in a one click add-on?
@@DanielOakfield Add-on for what?
To delete the unused material :)
@@DanielOakfield maybe, it's not too difficult.
bro... you don't know how much i need thisss... THANK YOU
I know how much I needed that myself :)
You are welcome
Yes, so annoying to have those unused materials :D:D
Indeed and many orphan items could slow down Blender loading and operations!
good. thank you. upvote.
Cant believe i had to search for a tutorial for such simple task..
Yeah some parts of the UI/UX is still not very intuitive
Zank You
