Sauerkraut is a gift from The Gods! It's a shame most people pass on it!

I live in Texas but my mom is from Ohio and our new year feast was black eyed peas and cabbage rolls, cabbage rolls had ground beef and raw rice in it with cabbage leaves around it and sauerkraut under and on top to keep it moist, and I never new until I was a teenager that pigs in a blanket was a hot dog in a croissant, to me it was a cabbage roll

Enjoy your videos, great recipes you make. Pork, kraut and black eyed peas for good luck on New Years. I'm originally from Virginia (black eye peas) and now live in Ohio (kraut). Love your recipe with the onions and apples in the kraut I will be making that. Thanks for all the yummy cooking.

Thanks my friend for stopping by! I've actually adopted this from my wife, who's from Ohio. They don't add apples and onions though.

Gotta try this. And sauerkraut is good for the gut environment.

So, you have pork and sauerkraut for New Year’s too??!! Never heard of it until I moved to Lancaster County PA (Amish country) from NJ some 12 years ago… I was told it was a PA Dutch thing (Amish/Mennonite) because it represented bringing good luck for the coming year… Don’t know if: a) you have a PA Dutch contingent there; or, b) you have the same kind of superstition; or, c) just plain old “tradition”….
But, anyway, sending this to all my other “Blackstone” central PA friends… I’m sure they’d like it … I tried pork and sauerkraut once… sauerkraut doesn’t “send” me; but, I DO see how it works together… if my arm was twisted, I would take a “no thank you” portion out of deference to the host… think the apple is a nice add, to keep the sourness of the sauerkraut at bay…
    HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
    “Y’all!!!”

      Some cool info.
My wife is from central Ohio and they do pork and kraut. For me, my family does collards, black eyed peas, hog jowl, and cornbread as our meal. Never did kraut. So now, we do pork and kraut and the collards, black eye peas, and hog jowl.

@@thehungryhussey ok…. So, someone finally explained it to me… (don’t remember if I heard it before, but reminded…if it ever was explained😒)…
So, in farming, pigs “root” and, as such, they root FORWARD… Chickens scratch; and, when they’re scratching on ground looking for eats, they sort of spring backwards…
So, in the superstition, one wants to eat pork as the FIRST meal of the NewYear. because pigs root forward (“looking” forward in the New Year); one dies not want chicken as the first meal, as it is connotative to “looking” BACK or BACKWARD at the year past…
That’s the “good luck”: looking FORWARD to the New Year…

I don’t eat pork so subbing in lamb chops- much better for our health and more tender. Can’t wait to experience this flavor explosion!
