I have no one to help and really wanted to put a cabinet together. I bought it online and could not believe that there wasn't a pilot hole in the wood. I knew it would be very difficult for me. This is great. I was wondering how I was going to do my pilot holes and clearance holes so everything lined up. Now I see how it can be a piece of cake.
The drill bits for driving screws are different from bits used for drilling directly into materials? I bought two different drill bits but the ones you show here for the screws are obviously different. Can I use bits for drilling materials to drive a screw? Also, could I just attach a screw directly into the drill and drive it without using a bit? I already tried that a couple of times and just one seems to have worked out. Ok this screws seem not needed to be pushed all the way to the screw head (the upper section is for attaching two pieces of wood using another kind of short screw).
Useful video, thanks for the upload. BTW what diameter pilot hole do you drill? I find that I need to start with very thin bits, less than 1mm then gradually increase, or the drill bit slides all over the place, but the thinner bits keep snapping.

Well explained the concept of pilot holes to beginners like myself. Thank you Sir. I have a question though. Let's say i need to join two pieces of wood making them 90 degrees to each other. I am using PZ2 screws and screw bits. My question is: i have a screw that is 7 cms in length. Let's say the first piece of wood that i would be screwing into the second takes 3 cms of the screw. My pilot hole in the second piece would need to be exactly 4 cms (the remaining length of the screw) or it can be less? Thanks you
Thanks for your kind comment and question. You are correct in thinking that the total depth of clearance hole plus pilot hole should ideally be at least the same as the screw length. However, when screwing into softwood it is often possible to have a shorter pilot hole in the second piece of wood and leave the screw to finish cutting its own way. It will, however, make it harder to turn the screw for that last bit of travel. An important job for the pilot hole is to accurately determine where the screw starts, in order to get the pieces of wood to pull together to make a neat joint. Good luck, Mike

Nice Mike, one thing I've always wondered though, is how deep to drill pilot hole, if I have, for simplicity, a 65mm screw, that will have 60mm in the wood, is the pilot hole 60mm? or do we drill it a bit more/less ? Thanks
Pilot Hole ensures screw starts correctly and screw goes in easier, especially if screwing manually and into harder wood. Advisable to drill pilot hole at least as far as expected screw travel. Deeper pilot hole no problem if wood thick enough. Also essential that pilot hole is suitable for screw in use. Hole too fat and screw will not grip well. Hole too thin will make a good fixing but screwing will be hard work. Beware of fixing too near edge of wood and causing a split. Hope that helps. Best wishes, Mike

Hi Mike - thank you for video, i had 1 question. How can i tell which driver bit to use P1 or P2 or P3 philips when i have a Drive philips screw ? They all fit but is there a spec somewhere on the screws or a guide or is it just a feel ?
Thanks for your appreciation of my video. To answer your question, if using Philips screw heads try the P2 bit size first. P1 for smaller screws and P3 for larger screws. Those sizes are marked on loose screwdriver bits but not usually on complete screwdriver tools, so you have to go by eye judgement and feel, as you say. A badly worn screwdriver tip will be difficult to use if the screw is very difficult to turn.
Is it fine to join to screw into plywood edge grain to join two pieces together? I've heard many takes on this question and would like to know your opinion. Again, a fine video sir! Thank you.
Hello again. Thanks for your question. It depends on several factors. First you preferably need good quality plywood with uniform and tightly packed layers with no gaps. Also, always use a carefully drilled pilot hole for each screw and if in doubt, use thinner but longer screws. Then if making a box which will get regular manhandling, use thicker plywood and more screws. I hope that helps. Sincerely, Mike

Haha thank you so much you saved me I was putting some curtain brackets onto wood above my window and thought I could get away with just using a power screw driver how dumb am i You need to drill in first using a proper power drill -----Then line the bracket up and scew the screws in much easier now lol

But a pilot hole should be chosen to allow the screw to be driven in, but to leave sufficient wood for the screw to bite into and hold firmly. In softwood, it is possible to drive screws without preparation holes, especially with pre-lubricated screws that tradesmen use, but it takes a lot more effort and there is a chance of the screw driver bit jumping out and damaging the wood face. Hard wood like oak always needs clearance and pilot holes. Good luck with all your DIY jobs. Sincerely, Mike

However, heavily stressed woodscrews - as on door hinges, or holding up a heavily loaded shelf - are more likely to pull out of the wood, and/or split the wood, before the metal screw reaches breaking point. So the strength of the fixing is governed by the quality of wood screwed into and suitability of pilot hole (if used). Longer fatter screws have more pull-out resistance. Hardened steel woodscrews are the most common in use, but beware of solid brass screws which are comparatively brittle and prone to their head twisting off when over tightened. I hope that helps.
