What I love about Hugh is he’s a perfect line between friend-rival and serious rival. He’s still your friend. However, at the same time, he’s very serious and determined on his goal

I'm actually really curious. How come people count Hugh as one of the "jerk rivals?"(Blue/Green and Silver). Blue was a playful jerk and Silver was downright spiteful and physically beat you(it was pushing but still). Hugh isn't even a playful jerk, he's just the only trainer in Aspertia, who isn't in the Trainer School, and wanted someone to battle who was on equal footing with him. He had the drive to hate the bad guys, like Silver, and he was only a bit arrogant, but not like the cocky jerk Blue was. He looked out for you and openly teamed up with you rather than being a roadblock(Blue during the Silph Co. heist & Silver during the Radio Tower takeback). He's not exactly what I'd call "a jerk rival."

To be honest I actually think Hugh's story makes him the best rival in all of the games. Other rivals would be like "I'm gonna be the best trainer ever and I'm gonna beat you one day!" Hugh actually had a definite purpose, to bring back his sister's pokémon. That made him a lot more understandable and likeable as a character.

In my opinion, Hugh is one of the best rivals the Pokémon series has to offer. Not only does he have a solid team, a theme that absolutely SLAPS, but he goes through significant character development in Black 2 and White 2. I see some people categorize him as a "jerkass" rival, where that couldn't be further from the truth. Sure, he's got the look of one, but in reality, he's a nice guy with a justifiable motivation for his journey. He just wants to get his sister's Purrloin back. Additionally, he constantly looks out for you, the player, and encourages you on your own journey. Moreover, you spend a significant amount of time fighting alongside Hugh rather than against him. Sounds like a "friend" rival, right? He's friendly, and brash, but he never stops trying to best you. He hits the spot between "jerkass" and "friendly" rivals. He's never a flat-out douche to you, the player, but he definitely dishes out these out to the reformed Team Plasma before his character development kicks in.
I really wish you fought him more. It's two times in the beginning, the tournament in driftveil, before the elite four, then post game. I think that's it. Hugh was the best rival in every way possible. He had a cooler personality than blue (go ahead and butthurt all you want but you know its true), he had the best design, an awesome backstory, and a decent team.
To this day, i’m still confused about how some people call Hugh a "jerk" rival. My dude literally complemented you every time you saw each other, when he asks you if you found Team Plasma in Castelia, if you say yes even tho Iris is the one who told you, he says something like:" it’s fine. you don’t don’t to lie to impress me. you know that right?". When you beat him at the entrance to the pokémon league, instead of questioning what he did wrong he strait up says something like this: "I lost... You really are quite the trainer "player". Don’t hold anything back, and win the league! Ig anywon can do it, it you. Good luck.". And right after you beat the game and leave ur house, he comes up to you like: "Awsome, i knew you had what i takes! And one more thing... Thanks for helping me get back Purrlo-i mean Liepard... it means a lot to my sister... Anyway...see you around, "Player"..." Hé acts all tough to Team Plasma but to anyone else, he’s really nice! He even forgave the former grunts for what they did! Hugh is is rival done right!
They look at how he first acted towards the White Team Plasma and assume he's a straight prick, but completely ignore how the story correctly treats it as a character flaw which he soon overcomes.
if you realize, Hugh never left Aspertia to save Purrloin without you, his best friend. He never left to pursue his goal, without thinking of his sister first. There's more to say, but we all know the rest. He's the best rival ever.
I remember when I was a kid, I named him "Edgelord" because of his design. I always made fun of him until I came to know his backstory and motivations, including his goal of bringing back his little sister's Purrloin. Even though he's just a kid, he doesn't care, because no matter how strong or dangerous the opponent, for the sake and happiness of her little sister, he's ready to do that. That's a noble goal; that's why I felt guilty and regretted it. That's why, in my next playthrough, I named him "Hero."
Really gotta say, Hugh is one of the best rivals, who really cared about the people and Pokemon around him and overall the greater good. He despised Team Plasma, his only personal reason being that they stole his sister's Pokemon and made her really upset, but overall, he just cannot stand Team Plasma's motive, and actually took an active stand against it, he was there with you at the very beginning, and there with you until the very end of your journey. I think it's a really touching detail that post-game, he hangs around in Ex Team Plasma's hideout in Driftveil city, helping to reunite people with their previously stolen Pokemon. Hugh is a rival with a lot of spunk and spirit, but more than anything, he's got a big heart.
He is a very very good person but when he sees team plasma I am going to feel bad for them cause I know that something bad was going to happen to them grunts
One of the many resaons I like Hugh is because he is a non-cliché rival. Most other rivals be like aim for the top only to get destroyed in some battles then go whining about how they are not being strong enough. I find Hugh the best one and to be a nice change of things.
Facts, from his design I thought he would be that cocky annoying rival like gary. But no he's really friendly and chill. He actually feels like your friend unlike most rivals that tent to seem too friendly or too mean.
Hugh is probably one of the most underrated rivals in all of pokemon. He really fit in the role for a rival, but is overshadowed by the more well known ones, like hau or silver

I like Hugh because his Edgy attitude is kinda fun when you realize it’s like a kid trying to be intimidating by saying “You are about to feel my rage!”. It fits great with Hugh (one of my favorite Rivals tbh)
They had no reason to give Hugh this banger of a theme but damn does it get me hyped! Also during my first playthrough I named him Bastion cause he gave off that feeling that he should be called Bastion and damn did I nail that name right cause the meaning of the name (Bastion) is a stronghold or fortification that remains intact. He remained strong in order to get back his sister's purrloin. Devastated when it evolved and then picked himself back up again continuing to be strong.
It's kinda heartbreaking to think that his sister's purloin grew up and ended up evolving far from her. The part where they reveal it turned into a Liepard definitly shocked me at the time.
He somehow took some of the most dynamic aspects of Silver, ran with them while not being an asshole, and ended up being one of the more likable rivals in the series.

I started playing BW2 recently and I'm almost up to the elite 4. And I gotta say, I like Hugh a lot. He's like a kid that acts like he's a wannabe anime protagonist with the "You're about to feel my rage." stuff but he actually can put up his own instead of putting up a facade. I also really respect that he doesn't have a goal to become the champion but rather to save his sister's purrloin. I like Hugh but he's a little annoying to battle with in double battles. He keeps targeting the enemy's pokemon that I'm resistant to instead of the one I'm weak to. Anyway, I will not update this comment or reply to any replies if I beat Black 2. Just know that I adore BW2 now and I'm having so much fun.
This song perfectly communicates who this character is, and I love it. There's drama, passion, heart, and sadness - this character wants to get that Purrloin back! And nothing is going to get in his way. With confidence, strength and a heart of hold, he'll stop anyone who gets in his way.
In fact, it's a victory for both of you when you win. He wants you to be a strong and capable ally. When you lose to him in the PWT he's actually disappointed.
A rival with a motive. Instead of being the stereotypical rival, he intends to toughen you up while he tries to find his sister’s stolen purloin, only to be stunned to figure out what happened to it while under the care of the Shadow Triad. Perfection.
It's so ironic how Black and White was the last games to use pixel art work, and anyone can agree to disagree, but Hugh's battle theme rules harder than anyone knows, and I wish we got to hear it more in the game. Every time the beat drops, I can't help but dance to it for around 30 seconds to a minute before actually fighting him, that's how much of a bop this is and it sucks that people put Black and White 2 so far under the radar and only now the game's getting the love it deserved years ago. I'm holding out to hope that we get an event in Pokemon Masters EX for BW2's 10th anniversary next month (or in October when it was released in America) and Hugh's in it. I want to finally see him in the game in all his glory and get to hear this badass theme once more in a remix that'll make me proud to be a diehard Gen 5 fan
Hugh is someone who's your friend but won't hesitate to beat the crap out of you or anyone else who stands in your way too. Plus he really cares about his family. He's probably my favourite rival because he's actually a challenge for once. The last time I actually had a challenging rival fight was Route 110 May.
So I remember not being able to play this game. And my friend literally told me that I was the rival. Like the way he acts, talks, and even how much he cares for his younger sister. And when I finally got the game I remember going through that game and being like wow my friend wasn't wrong. I think my favorite part about him is his anger. Like he's one to jump into the situation without thinking about it because of his anger for team plasma. Not to mention he has literally my favorite Pokemon battle theme. This game was great and probably the closest thing to a perfect Pokemon game.

People never talk about how awesome Hugh was; he was the final true competitive and independent rival who truly felt like a rival in the franchise. His backstory was well written and understandable, and was actually interesting with sympathetic motives. Honestly, he may be my favourite Pokemon rival, period. In my opinion, he has the best rival battle theme in all of Pokemon, it's so slept on that it hurts.

Hugh is the best, most ideal type of rival. He's competitive and doesn't go easy on you, but at the same time, he wants to see you improve. Blue merely sees you as a "warm-up round" and makes excuses or behaves like a sore loser when you beat him; Hugh is glad when you win because that means you're a dependable ally. This is an example of a healthy rivalry. Fact is, Pokémon fans have a seriously warped view of what a rival _should_ be. They think civility and decency are signs of weakness and that arrogance and hostility rule the day. They reject kind folk and idolize the conceited prodigy, all because the latter presents some sort of "challenge" that must be "overcome" to "prove" themselves. Personality and raw talent are overrated; rivalries *_do not work_* without mutual respect and a shared desire to see each other get better. What Blue presents is a perversion of that term where only one side benefits from victory and where mutual respect (however much he implies it) is clearly absent. I consider him an adversary to be taken down, not a rival to improve myself against. He's just Giovanni without the arrest warrant and I will die on that hill.

In my opinion, Hugh is one of the best rivals the Pokémon series has to offer. Not only does he have a solid team, a theme that absolutely SLAPS, but he goes through significant character development in Black 2 and White 2.
I see some people categorize him as a "jerkass" rival, where that couldn't be further from the truth. Sure, he's got the look of one, but in reality, he's a nice guy with a justifiable motivation for his journey. He just wants to get his sister's Purrloin back.
Additionally, he constantly looks out for you, the player, and encourages you on your own journey. Moreover, you spend a significant amount of time fighting alongside Hugh rather than against him.
Sounds like a "friend" rival, right? He's friendly, and brash, but he never stops trying to best you. He hits the spot between "jerkass" and "friendly" rivals. He's never a flat-out douche to you, the player, but he definitely dishes out these out to the reformed Team Plasma before his character development kicks in.

I really wish you fought him more. It's two times in the beginning, the tournament in driftveil, before the elite four, then post game. I think that's it. Hugh was the best rival in every way possible. He had a cooler personality than blue (go ahead and butthurt all you want but you know its true), he had the best design, an awesome backstory, and a decent team.

To this day, i’m still confused about how some people call Hugh a "jerk" rival. My dude literally complemented you every time you saw each other, when he asks you if you found Team Plasma in Castelia, if you say yes even tho Iris is the one who told you, he says something like:" it’s fine. you don’t don’t to lie to impress me. you know that right?". When you beat him at the entrance to the pokémon league, instead of questioning what he did wrong he strait up says something like this: "I lost... You really are quite the trainer "player". Don’t hold anything back, and win the league! Ig anywon can do it, it you. Good luck.". And right after you beat the game and leave ur house, he comes up to you like: "Awsome, i knew you had what i takes! And one more thing... Thanks for helping me get back Purrlo-i mean Liepard... it means a lot to my sister... Anyway...see you around, "Player"..." Hé acts all tough to Team Plasma but to anyone else, he’s really nice! He even forgave the former grunts for what they did! Hugh is is rival done right!

I remember when I was a kid, I named him "Edgelord" because of his design. I always made fun of him until I came to know his backstory and motivations, including his goal of bringing back his little sister's Purrloin.
Even though he's just a kid, he doesn't care, because no matter how strong or dangerous the opponent, for the sake and happiness of her little sister, he's ready to do that.
That's a noble goal; that's why I felt guilty and regretted it. That's why, in my next playthrough, I named him "Hero."

Really gotta say, Hugh is one of the best rivals, who really cared about the people and Pokemon around him and overall the greater good.
He despised Team Plasma, his only personal reason being that they stole his sister's Pokemon and made her really upset, but overall, he just cannot stand Team Plasma's motive, and actually took an active stand against it, he was there with you at the very beginning, and there with you until the very end of your journey.
I think it's a really touching detail that post-game, he hangs around in Ex Team Plasma's hideout in Driftveil city, helping to reunite people with their previously stolen Pokemon.
Hugh is a rival with a lot of spunk and spirit, but more than anything, he's got a big heart.

One of the many resaons I like Hugh is because he is a non-cliché rival. Most other rivals be like aim for the top only to get destroyed in some battles then go whining about how they are not being strong enough. I find Hugh the best one and to be a nice change of things.
Facts, from his design I thought he would be that cocky annoying rival like gary. But no he's really friendly and chill. He actually feels like your friend unlike most rivals that tent to seem too friendly or too mean.

I like Hugh because his Edgy attitude is kinda fun when you realize it’s like a kid trying to be intimidating by saying “You are about to feel my rage!”. It fits great with Hugh (one of my favorite Rivals tbh)
They had no reason to give Hugh this banger of a theme but damn does it get me hyped! Also during my first playthrough I named him Bastion cause he gave off that feeling that he should be called Bastion and damn did I nail that name right cause the meaning of the name (Bastion) is a stronghold or fortification that remains intact. He remained strong in order to get back his sister's purrloin. Devastated when it evolved and then picked himself back up again continuing to be strong.

It's kinda heartbreaking to think that his sister's purloin grew up and ended up evolving far from her. The part where they reveal it turned into a Liepard definitly shocked me at the time.
The Pokémon Adventures manga ruined that plot thread by having Purrloin return in the end with no problem whatsoever.

I started playing BW2 recently and I'm almost up to the elite 4. And I gotta say, I like Hugh a lot. He's like a kid that acts like he's a wannabe anime protagonist with the "You're about to feel my rage." stuff but he actually can put up his own instead of putting up a facade. I also really respect that he doesn't have a goal to become the champion but rather to save his sister's purrloin. I like Hugh but he's a little annoying to battle with in double battles. He keeps targeting the enemy's pokemon that I'm resistant to instead of the one I'm weak to. Anyway, I will not update this comment or reply to any replies if I beat Black 2. Just know that I adore BW2 now and I'm having so much fun.

This song perfectly communicates who this character is, and I love it. There's drama, passion, heart, and sadness - this character wants to get that Purrloin back! And nothing is going to get in his way. With confidence, strength and a heart of hold, he'll stop anyone who gets in his way.
best rival theme. you barely fight him. he is more workign with you than competing. he isnt just going on about winning.
In fact, it's a victory for both of you when you win. He wants you to be a strong and capable ally. When you lose to him in the PWT he's actually disappointed.

A rival with a motive. Instead of being the stereotypical rival, he intends to toughen you up while he tries to find his sister’s stolen purloin, only to be stunned to figure out what happened to it while under the care of the Shadow Triad. Perfection.
It's so ironic how Black and White was the last games to use pixel art work, and anyone can agree to disagree, but Hugh's battle theme rules harder than anyone knows, and I wish we got to hear it more in the game. Every time the beat drops, I can't help but dance to it for around 30 seconds to a minute before actually fighting him, that's how much of a bop this is and it sucks that people put Black and White 2 so far under the radar and only now the game's getting the love it deserved years ago.
I'm holding out to hope that we get an event in Pokemon Masters EX for BW2's 10th anniversary next month (or in October when it was released in America) and Hugh's in it. I want to finally see him in the game in all his glory and get to hear this badass theme once more in a remix that'll make me proud to be a diehard Gen 5 fan

Hugh is someone who's your friend but won't hesitate to beat the crap out of you or anyone else who stands in your way too. Plus he really cares about his family. He's probably my favourite rival because he's actually a challenge for once. The last time I actually had a challenging rival fight was Route 110 May.

So I remember not being able to play this game. And my friend literally told me that I was the rival. Like the way he acts, talks, and even how much he cares for his younger sister. And when I finally got the game I remember going through that game and being like wow my friend wasn't wrong. I think my favorite part about him is his anger. Like he's one to jump into the situation without thinking about it because of his anger for team plasma. Not to mention he has literally my favorite Pokemon battle theme. This game was great and probably the closest thing to a perfect Pokemon game.

People never talk about how awesome Hugh was; he was the final true competitive and independent rival who truly felt like a rival in the franchise. His backstory was well written and understandable, and was actually interesting with sympathetic motives. Honestly, he may be my favourite Pokemon rival, period. In my opinion, he has the best rival battle theme in all of Pokemon, it's so slept on that it hurts.

Hugh is the best, most ideal type of rival. He's competitive and doesn't go easy on you, but at the same time, he wants to see you improve. Blue merely sees you as a "warm-up round" and makes excuses or behaves like a sore loser when you beat him; Hugh is glad when you win because that means you're a dependable ally. This is an example of a healthy rivalry.
Fact is, Pokémon fans have a seriously warped view of what a rival _should_ be. They think civility and decency are signs of weakness and that arrogance and hostility rule the day. They reject kind folk and idolize the conceited prodigy, all because the latter presents some sort of "challenge" that must be "overcome" to "prove" themselves. Personality and raw talent are overrated; rivalries *_do not work_* without mutual respect and a shared desire to see each other get better.
What Blue presents is a perversion of that term where only one side benefits from victory and where mutual respect (however much he implies it) is clearly absent. I consider him an adversary to be taken down, not a rival to improve myself against. He's just Giovanni without the arrest warrant and I will die on that hill.
