I'm in the same boat. Brawl is the only Smash game I've ever played. And I absolutely loved playing these characters in these different situations. Despite mostly not knowing any of them since I barely played any Nintendo games growing up. I knew big names like Link, Mario and had played Pokemon at this point, but most of the other franchises I didn't know even existed. Unsurprisingly Meta Knight was my favourite to play with Lucario a close second. MK for how well he played, Lucario cause I liked the aura mechanic. World of Light was a let down imo. Or at least was very misadvertised. Its opening voiced cutscene and it's initial gameplay made it look like Subspace 2. But that cutscene was the only voiced scene and the actual gameplay is a very long slugfest.
I forgot how the way Wario handles everyone's trophy forms terrified me as a kid, the way he slings the princess over his shoulder and grabs Ness by the head was horrifying. Thank you for allowing me to reminisce about this childhood trauma RT.

During the cutscene where Sonic finally arrives I saw his little shoe buckle and went “oh that looks off” and realized his little buckle locks weren’t there. I then proceeded to spend the next hour checking all artwork on the Sonic wiki, fanart, screenshots from the games etc. only to learn that he never had a little clip lock for his shoe buckles to begin with. It genuinely led me down a rabbit hole all my friends thought I was going insane for. I wouldn’t be freaking out as much if it wasn’t for the fact that I have a Sonic amiibo I see literally every day just above my bed and thus see him everyday and have clear memory of that buckle lock. Anyways great video 10/10.

Not really. It was co-developed by HAL, Flagship and Dimps. He's actually only credited as a special advisor for that game and it's incidentally his last Kirby credit. In all honesty, Sakurai was not as involved in Kirby as people may think. He only directed 5 games in the end, one of which was an enhanced remake.

Anyway one day I was playing through this campaign and getting super into it and I stepped on one of the axles. It went a solid inch into my heel. My heel now has a crater on it.

There’s a club on my university’s campus that calls themselves the “retro games club” and I’m guessing a year or two before I was a freshmen, they played smash brawl once on the Wii and went straight downhill from there, because four years later they’re only playing smash ultimate which isn’t even retro, they just got tired of only playing brawl
I feel like every gaming club needs a "No smash bros" clause otherwise it'll inevitably become another Smash Bros club. Like an invasive species. I love the series but it always smothers out other games

A feature that I feel is largely ignored wtih subspace is that stickers actually have a use. In the story's map, you can see a menu called "Stickers" and that allows you to equip stickers to characters I believe. Stickers tend to give boosts to stats mostly, and usually the larger the sticker the stronger it was at the cost of taking up more space since they cannot overlap.
For those confused of what the 4 variants of Marth are that Dan mentioned, they are Marth Not Marth Clearly not Marth and I Cant Believe it's not Marth!
This is it. This is (possibly) the greatest story I've ever seen in all of fiction. The only English appearance of Lucas. My favorite appearance of Ganondorf. And exactly the right amount of Sonic the Hedgehog. We will never see anything as incredible as this ever again.
I think it deserves to be considered one of the greatest game narratives ever, even if other games are objectively written way better due to all the odds stacked against it and it still pulling through. It is a silent film with dozens of tonally clashing characters written by a fricking Kingdom Hearts writer. It is a miracle that it is a comprehensible storyline that also manages to fit in character arcs, plot twists, and worldbuilding. You do have to read the supplementary Brawl Dojo post launch post for everything for everything to make sense, but other than that it’s a remarkable achievement that no other game has ever done

From someone who at one point was learning and considering running the Brawl subspace emissary speed run category, Its funny hearing Dan talk about meta-knight, because while everything he says is true about meta-knight in competitive play, my perspective from the speed run is that all of the things that make him strong in competitive play, make him pretty mediocre for subspace for most nonspeedrun players. Meta-knight is oppressive in comp for a bunch of reasons; His recovery is amazing and has high priority meaning they just beat other moves that try to changeling them, His 5 jumps allow him to spend most of the game camping in the air with upair and downair meaning he doesnt have to worry about tripping. He's floaty in a game is generally pretty slow and difficult to capitalize on stray hits, meaning there are very few if any kill confirms that work on him, and his moves all start up insanely fast meaning he has a really good neutral game. He also has very good dash speed, with good walking speed and an average air acceleration (how fast you start/change the direction you are moving in the air) All of these strengths make him insanely oppressive. In competitive. See in subspace, nearly all of these are actually a liability for most players. For most of subspace, his recovery isn't needed and while his runspeed and up-b can put in some work most players arent looking to run from point a to point b without searching for things, fighting enemies and collecting stickers and trophies. Theres not really much need to air camp, as enemies often have super armor or just don't have any meaningful hit stun. Being floaty in subspace means that you die much faster than other characters from the same hits, and without good DI you can kinda just die to a single mistake sometimes. Since there arent really any combos you need to worry about, being floaty is often a liability for most players. His moves start up fast, but since damage matters alot more in subspace for most fights, frame data doesn't matter as much as neutral isnt really a factor. None of this is to say he's bad in the speedrun. Once you get him in the maze at the end of the game, he can reliably be the fastest at defeating most of the 1v1 fights vs the shadow versions of the main cast, and his movement speed makes him great for navigating the maze and getting to the taboo fight, but then you swap to Charizard for the pure damage numbers bc his job is done. Or peach if you are making a TAS, since the stitch is broken but for human players, the rng isn't worth throwing away a 2hour run for the chance at a slightly faster Taboo fight. TAS's get to cheat bc they know exactly what frame they can pull a stitch in any level/bossfight, meaning they can abuse it. Anyways if you read all this you are a real one, If any other speedrunners show up and i missed something from my analysis, know that i did not end up going that deep and struggled to stick with the run, meaning that this is based on my understanding of the role he plays in the speedrun. If you have anything you wanna add or corrections to make, lemme know and Ill edit my comment to reflect that. This is just my thoughts on his role in both the speedrun and casusal run through of the game, with a bit of perspective i have as a person whos a fan of the competitive smash community. And something i wanted to talk about because i think its cool that the things that make you broken in one mode can hinder you in another.
Fun fact, Mr. Game and Watch is canonically the source of the "shadow bugs" that create the evil clones and most of the subspace army. Apparently an infinite amount of that stuff can be mined from his body.
Brawl continues to be one of my favorite Smash games despite it's seemingly casual nature and simple story. Smash Bros was always a game about childlike wonder of playtime. The villian of Brawl being the literal embodiment of the Tabuu of still playing with action figures as a grown-up that's physically manipulating the "subspace emissaries" who control the figurines may not be the most subtle comparison but it's still very charming. I've moved on to Ultimate but Brawl always has a place in my childhood
Dan doing marginally better with Brawl Ganondorf (the worst character in any smash game) than Brawl Meta Knight (the best character in any smash game) is kinda hilarious.
Subspace Emissary is such a fond memory for me, so I'm incredibly happy you decided to revisit it! There's certainly a degree of nostalgia affecting my fondness, but I still think recent Smash editions are sorely missing out on this kind of story mode
boy did this bring back memories. the story mode was such a big thing for us as children, thank you so much for introducing more people to this wild, fun smash bros story, it was a blast going through it again with you. (and finally seeing the ending! could never get past Tabuu and that stupid insta kill attack. probably didn't help that I was always doing it two player so it was always a two for one when he did that.)
To get real for a moment, brawl still to this day actively holds the title for longest amount of time exclusively playing one game in my life When I first got this game, I kid you not, I played it for 6 MONTHS IN A ROW, whether it was classic, tourney, all star (when I finally got that mode) and multiple playthroughs of subspace This game was my sole form of entertainment for months without any other game in between, and even to this day it hasn’t been dethroned and I doubt it ever will Thank you Sakurai for ruining my life in the best way possible, from then till now
A story that inspired a whole era of fanfiction... Honestly, that's why I loved this so much. It's not the most cohesive story, but it encapsulates the energy of each character so well, so their fans can get all giddy whenever their favorites come onto the scene. Good guys, bad guys, the lot of them! They put their characters together in great ways without a line of spoken dialogue, and... honestly? The Subspace Army was full of awesome, creative enemy designs. They all got so weird and unique - feeling like they all came together from so many different genres of games. The whole thing really feels like officially licensed fanfiction, complete with some wild OCs being thrown in to spice it up. It was awesome. And the fact that it actually had some really memorable scenes (I was always so moved about the whole arc they had with R.O.B. refusing to be a pawn), like the whole moment where they all come flying in on their respective vehicles to the title theme music... With how many fanfictions took this as a direct inspiration, it's honestly a shame we never quite got anything like this. Sure, Galleom makes a surprise appearance in Ultimate, but... I hope someday, we can get a big, silly, cinematic get-together like this again. There's nothing quite like this out there.
Having a fun platforming adventure story mode in Smash Bros was such a good idea. Im so glad they kept it for the rest of the series and it definetly wasnt a one time thing...

Do you guys remember when Dan beat Breath of the Wild without dying? Do you remember all those Nuzlockes he completed? Do you remember those FromSoftware bosses he beat? Just had to remind myself he's good at games for a moment.
i remember playing subspace with a friend of mine when we were 11 , but we had to do it in one sitting as my wii memory storage had been maxed out and i didn't know how to delete old game data in the settings as i was young and stupid, so we spent hours and hours playing . We learned quickly to use the stickers gimmick to help make us hit harder with our prefered characters (I liked using Snake so i buffed him with as many explosion damaged boosting stickers I could get making all his bombs do so much damage). It took us so long that my friend slept over and we had to leave the wii on overnight with the tv turned off to make sure we didn't lose all of our progress. The next day we grinded through the final area while dying multiple times over and over, having to keep continuing while slowly starting to give up, but we kept going and finally got to take on the final boss tabuu. It was both my friend and I's first time seeing the last boss and we were pumped to have gotten so far. It was absolute hell though as it was so damn hard to fight , especially the wing move that just insta-kills anyone it hits and i sucked at dodging it. we must have changed our characters at least 5 times hoping it would change the outcome. until finally we got the final blow and beat Tabuu. You can't imagine how happy we were. We felt like champions that day and it didn't matter if we couldn't save the game as we knew we did it!!! Finally we messed around with the stage builder and made a "sticker farm" where the ground was just conveyor belts facing toward a center piece of ground where falling stickers would be funneled to for collecting. we wanted to see how strong we could make our characters for fun. i can't remember much of it, only that it was pretty broken. That was one of the best weekends of my childhood during secondary school, and watching Dan play this brought back these memories that i almost forgot. That weekend was 13 years ago and im now nearly 24 years old Thank you Dan

I think what's kinda funny is the reason we never got another subspace emissary is because of videos like this.
Cant wait for Sakurai to step down and hopefully we can an actual real story mode again
This game really did just have the best main theme of my childhood.
Not to forget the single sickest cutscene in the history of the medium.
