I dont think ARGs are a lower form of art; I just think they're a different form of art. Its still art, it just has a different flow, a different style. The main point I wanted people to take away with the end is that people should just appreciate what people make without putting a box around it, which is ironic since I'm talking about ARGs but you know. I don't think I got the point across as well as I'd liked, so sorry if you did not get the message, and sorry for making it confusing.

What made you feel so uneasy?
Something I realized is back when Logan was 18 (I think) he had to go through surgery and he said that if he died he would want his videos to loop over and over again like a cycle. Since Logan is dead in this it kinda makes sense why it's in a constant loop

I'd like to point out that Nintendo straight-up filed a C&D on something that was a PARODY & fell under fair-use. Let that sink in.
Yet it's using Mario's likeness in an inappropriate manor and there were several several people who complained about plushie videos (something a kid would watch) being filled with swearing and violence. Sml made the news over it, not something you want being in tandem with your IP.
@toxin2366 nobody said it was for kids. Besides, it's up to the parents to monitor their little bastard's screentime, not the creator. Also, THAT'S LITERALLY PARODY USE!! I don't see people going after Robot Chicken, I don't see people going after the people who made the countless Sonic fan animations. What makes SML any different?
Because robot chicken is on an adult TV station during a late night timeslot when most kids aren't even awake. It's exclusively marked for adults, RUclips doesn't do that aside from age restrictions and RUclips kids. Also Sega is actually cool and lets fan projects exist and embrace them like with mania. Nintendo is extremely cautious with their characters, taking down fangames and dangerous content that could get them sued because it was their character. It was A mario plushie, not a likeness of mario.
But I agree that parents should pay attention to what their kids are watching and Nintendo sucks for taking down fanprojects and actual parodies. I'm just saying they had their reasons

I think this is an amazing way to cope with the death of a series you loved. I feel like you don't make something like this unless you're passionate about the reference material, and I think that there's a lot of passion in this project.
I really wish people would stop overusing the term "ARG" to refer to anything with interactivity and a horror focus. The point and click adventure games remind me of Flash games from back in the 2000s. We just enjoyed those things for what they were, back then. Suddenly, a couple of Slenderman ARGs get really popular and now everyone expects that to be the standard in all internet horror media.
It's also really weird hearing people talk about stuff they're nostalgic for that came out when I was finishing high school.

I found about SMLwiki through the fnf mod, and was hooked immediately. Was never the biggest fan of sml and I think that makes me like it more. It’s like watching the finale to story you only knew on a surface level. I love the overall plot and vibe of it, it’s like watching the aftermath of an apocalypse. It speaks for itself really, and your video formulated my thoughts exactly. It’s not an arg, it’s simply art.

To be fair, an ARG requires an interactive element- plenty of horror series that people *call* ARGs are in fact not. Marble hornets was an ARG because the audience could interact and change the outcome, but as far as im aware, petscop and angel gabby are just horror series (very good ones!), not ARGs. People have broadened the term ARG to mean "any horror content you might have to dig for some elements of" but originally an ARG required you have some degree of control over the potential outcome, usually with puzzles or codes the audience has to figure out so the story can progress
Exactly this! MILGRAM, despite not being horror, is an ARG. Most analog horror series are not.

I feel like people forget the G in ARG. it’s a GAME. Something you can play and interact with. It’s not strictly horror or anything like that, it’s simply an interactive experience that blurs reality with fiction. An “Alternate-Reality Game.”
Not necessarily, it also focuses on the “alternate reality” part. Which petscop definitely had. In fact, the story presented the actual petscop youtube channel as a part of the lore itself. The “interactive” part I think is a bit more broad than directly affecting the narrative. Like, code solving, connecting dots between videos/games/various media, reading descriptions for clues, etc. the interaction is secondary to the “alternate reality” part. Its only interactive because the story supposedly takes place in our reality
i love this kind of stuff, im genuinely surprised stuff like this are still made in this day and age. It has a really 2008 feel to it, almost like it was made in flash or something like that, i love it.

I agree that the SMLWiki isn't an ARG, but I think it's Unfiction, a term that people confuse a lot. A lot of Unfiction are ARGs, and a lot of ARGs are Unfiction! But people think all unfictions are ARGs

An ARG is a sub-genre of Unfiction that requires audience participation to progress. So, as an example. Petscop is Unfiction, it is NOT an ARG. EverymanHYBRID, on the other hand, IS an ARG.

While an ARG (I believe) uses real world elements, (E.G. cicada 311, Wilbur soot arg, etc.), while unfiction is usually all online, (E.G. smlwiki, some parts of the Mandela Catalouge, or welcome home).
@@Togmalunchboxno, not really. as long as the audience needs to do something for the story to progress and/or can affect the outcome of the series it's an ARG. ARG is basically any show which focuses on audience interaction. While unfiction can have some codes, hidden lore and whatnot, the difference with the ARG is you HAVE TO solve those codes to progress, and it's happening more often than not in real time. real world interaction has nothing to do with series being an ARG or not

Don't know why, but the jumpscares are now replaced by a poorly photoshopped photo of Logan smiling, with text saying, "I made tis wedsite" Can the uploader of this video or anyone else who knows why this changed explain why? Is it to prevent seizures or just get rid of shock value, or is it for a different reason?
maybe the creators thought it was too intense for something kids watch. probably because of the intense shock value. the flashing lights and the swears
there’s also a chance someone actually did suffer a seizure and instead of just giving a warning they just got rid of them
@@whoisezekiel2099 there is a warning lol, that's **why** the jumpscares were replaced. i made it so if you access a page with flashing lights from a referrer that isn't the site itself, it forces you to see the index, and if you're seeing the index for the first time (by session), it forces you to see the photosensitivity warning. if you found a flaw in this that makes it unsafe, disclose it please

i actually like SMLwiki more knowing its just for art; i was kind of put off thinking it might be an arg bc the elements were so nonsensical; which isnt bad but usually arg's make SOME sense. but it being just an art project for fun is much better, it makes it //feel// fun

When clicking on this video, I held very, very low hopes. But I was heavily wrong. I ended up loving this art piece, and this video included. This is seriously such a good thing, especially for its topic. SML was something I loved heavily as a kid, being 18 now freshly just graduated not even a few weeks ago, this video was such a very lovely nostalgic thing to look at for me. I really love the approach of the site and its art, really great video man.

SMLWiki is more so an art project to be experienced rather than an ARG, not every piece of horror has to be the next "Mandela Catalogue" or "28 Days later" or even "Shipwrecked 64", sometimes, it's best for horror to be something that is a just, a simple horror story. The age of compleities and cynical twists tend to make horror more confusing then it should be. Art is someting people can put out, and that's all that matters in this blue planet.

This video is one of the greatest documents on anything I’ve ever seen. This deserves more than what it has.
I originally didn't plan to watch this whole entire video but i end up did bc i got invested to it on my way too haha, i don't usually look into horror so this is pretty spooky to me but also funny bc i seen those type of eyes and month so much is like seeing personal fan service to me lol but is very interesting and i loved it and finally the last part about the art creation advice really touched me i been using, creating and having the ideas in my head as a means to a end and never trully express them outside the stage of just ideas in fact i barely even draw them to know the general theme, sorry i speak to much i just got too invested after watching this i would say this is very worth and I'm grateful to be able to see this and you making this video and the creator for making such a art and just... thank you.

I kind of processed the “this is not an art” line as being that this wasn’t a game, but instead just an interactive perspective in a way. Like this isn’t an alternate reality, rather it’s just someone’s breakdown of how they see SML.

This is one of the best art projects I’ve seen, all out of fucking SML.
Now, I never really had any close connection to SML, I did grow up with him but didn’t view him a lot. But I can see the message that the site was telling, and I really like it. There’s so much love and care for it and experiencing this first hand back when it first came out made it so much better. Great video. I bet if this page was sent back to 2017 there would be so many kids being jumpscared lol

Even finding out its not an ARG, it still got me invested to learn more despite before not being interested. The idea was so interesting of the wiki page being screwed up and stuff.
Exploring this site with my younger sibling who is a recently retired sml fan (me being regularly retired). Insanely fun just looking around and seeing all the stuff going on with references and silly things we’ve been able to connect. Love to see the connection with art at the end too, definitely a huge inspiration given how goofy it all seems and is executed at times.
I never would've expected a tweet of mine to be presented as if somebody is meeting with a detective in a 1 hour video essay about SML lol

when I first discovered SMLwiki (through that DM) I was both disturbed and intrigued. I didn't really get back in SML since they switched to puppets and rebranded as it felt like what I came for just left. that changed when SMLwiki came along, as I found (a mostly ironic) appreciation for the new. I feel as if my online life changed when clicking on that link, as if a part of my childhood, albeit in a new form, came back to me and not only invited me back but benefitted me in a lot of ways, bringing me into the SML community and meeting new people (I even met the voice actor for Mama Luigi, Zeke, which is fucking rad). it's poetic to me in a way. this site, despite being a silly shitpost project based on a problematic puppet show, means a lot to me.
on to the video itself, I really enjoyed it. I love the editing work as well as the progression and such. I love video essays like this so consider me a new fan. I actually learned a few things about the site that I missed. while I love the site, I didn't keep up with it as, not only do I suck at finding shit, but I had other things to focus on. I did still have it in my mind however and when I heard about the "aagony" code I knew I had to at least go there and "finish" SMLwiki. I also appreciate the video for finally wrapping my head around what the story was. I did understand bits of it (apocalypse happened that caused everything to fuck up and the ground to turn into spooky Marvin meat) but I didn't get the full picture. again, I suck at stuff like this lmao
I really like the ending to the video as well, how you tied it to the message of making art and how you should make it how you want to, not what others want. it's a valuable lesson, especially to me as one who has felt dissatisfied with their own art, thinking it won't get anywhere, but even if it won't, it will still matter to me. SMLwiki is unlike any project on the internet, it feels both familiar and new. It's not an ARG, a creepypasta, analog horror, it's a work of art, a love/hate letter to SuperMarioLogan
