If You Were Looking To Use Ko-Fi its currently not working. Super Chats are though I think I misspoke somewhere in the video but the cancer patient is Mark's Wife
By luck, I started watching this when you made this comment. You do mention the cancer patient is Mark’s wife in the “Details” section around the beginning
You are exactly the kind of channel I look for when it comes to games like this. Amazing content. One question I hope you can answer. Is this truly a game that was discontinued back then and refurbished now or was it designed like that? Have like, a safe version and a scary version and like, have it being pulled from the shelfs being a bit of ingame lore? I dont know.
One thing I love about the Starlings is that ingame, they look like they're constantly trying to render at a higher polygon count than the N64 could have handled. They constantly shift between high and low detail models across their form.
I think my favorite has to be Blot/Rex. While the other's feel like they were put into the game with context going by what we've learned. The fact that Rex, glitches for lack of a better term, into existence, and in a place that should be safe no less, just makes him feel wrong in a good way
That just makes it even better tbh. It can handle that polygon count but not consistently, with the limited memory killing that.@@The-kentucky-fried-one
it also feels like theyre constantly fighting the whole "render at a lower polycount at a distance" it uses, like theyre trying to be hidden by the game itself
I'm the voice actor for our favourite little tragic scumbag, Mark Mullins, and I really want you to know how much I love this video. Apart from the usual lore explanations and theorycrafting I find on videos about Shipwrecked, I just adore how you highlight everything more than just the story alone. Thank you for not writing it off as another "mascot horror" and expressing your adoration for what the game was able to capture for you. Especially your ending note, that was really sweet man. You just made me really proud and surprised, honestly, about Shipwrecked, Broadside Beach - all of it. I found this project about 2 years ago and was blown away at how this wasn't like anything I've ever seen before (literally the first thing Squeaks showed me was the clip of Bucky slamming someone's head at a wall lol. I was hooked). To me, through this video, you've shown just what Squeaks, the programmers, the artists, and the actors were all able to achieve; the impact of the art I was able to be a part of didn't fully process until I sat my ass down and watched your wonderful video. Thank you for this. Thank you so much.
Thank you for taking pride in your work. There are so many times I feel like people do something for a paycheck vs doing something bc they want to have fun with it like actors are supposed to. Thanks for being u
I love how as the game progresses, Buckys head lowers further and further with every bit of information you find. It’s carefully done in a way that he goes from the joyful character you play at the start, to a creation caught in something horrible. He truly only wanted to go on an adventure, to find his friends and play the game they where made for. And at the end it feels like he just gave up on ever having a happy ending. How could he after what he found out? After realising everything his creators done in his name. It’s horrible. Yet in a sadistic way, I adore how his body language portrays the mental decline he’s going through, when his words truly weren’t enough. When he realised that he couldn’t stop the player’s curiosity. He could only go along for the ride.
Darn, I didn't notice that. He complains and gets angry at the player a few times but ultimately lets them do whatever and talks kindly to them till the end. Bucky is a friend :)
My thoughts exactly...I always found Bucky's descent into despair extremely haunting despite how it's often overshadowed by everything else going on. I wonder if him jumping off the balcony in the end was meant to parallel Connor's own demise.
It’s how i’d imagine most happy-go-lucky characters would act if they saw what their companies were doing behind the scenes Like if Disney did some horrible vile shit (which.. okay is JUST Disney), Mickey wouldn’t just go along with it, like how most parodies would portray him. He’d be horrified along with us. Because it goes against everything he represents. That’s exactly how Bucky feels right now. His innocence just being destroyed
something rlly cool that not a lot of people talk about is how each of the caught jump scares dissolve into how the person who caught you died. Gary’s jumpscare turns into the notches on a stove, olivia’s turns into a lake, nathan’s turns into bucky, etc.
And Brandon desolves into a field. Presumably the one he overdosed on while on the job. Blot desolves into Rex's face, followed by a graveyard since he died of natural causes.
I do think the false letterboxing/ pseudo 4:3 aspect ratio is smart. I can imagine how a blind playthrough must have felt when suddenly the unused blackspace becomes an enemy peering at you from the side; I don't think I've seen a game do that before.
I liked how the character designs in the commercial threaded the needle where they were creepy but not in a way that seemed unbelievable for children's mascots to look.
@@voidska oh god, just imagine that fetch quest being timed and if you lose the rabbit will die due to blood loss, you will not be able to do the fetch quest again beacuse, obviously, the rabbit is dead
the genuine cheerfulness of stumbler is such a good contrast. i can easily see a different dev taking his character in a completely different direction
I love how REAL this is. The focus of the game isn’t the starlings, it’s of Conner’s pride and hatred, of Mark’s sorrow, of corporate greed (not the main focus but still); it’s not a supernatural story, it’s a story of REAL people facing real problems and how these people aren’t perfect. It doesn’t praise Conner for showing us the game, it chides him for what he did. It doesn’t try to make us feel horrible for Mark, it shows us how poorly he is reacting. It doesn’t try to humanize the monsters, it simply shows their pasts and why they’re like this. It’s not a story about horrifying monsters, it’s a story about how humans can do _far_ worse than any monster. And honestly? That realistic look at people? At how horrible we can be? That’s more horrifying than any monster.
This honestly makes me think though... Are the starlings still alive outside of the game? The murders certainly happened but they were all brought back as starlings and the characters we see are just representations of them. So are they still out there?
@abrasivesoup this might be spoilers but iirc the four starlings being Brandon Gary Olivia and nathan formed into some gigantic "mass" and split into halves being the husk vandal (aka j.d) but I'm not to sure if they're dead
At 2 in the morning, I had to look up a dr seuss book to decode a game about living mascot suits, an angry game dev, and a biomass under a theme park. Fire game 10/10
26:05 I’m pretty sure Squeaks said in the discord that Brandon became a starling long before the murders. If I remember right he killed the voice actors because they wore the mascot suits at one point and he thought they were impersonating his friends. Awesome research btw! I’ve been looking for a video documenting the lore.
This game hides a full-on Shakespearean tragedy behind the scenes: life and death of Bucky’s creator that is similar in many ways to Walt Disney, the many victims of the Broadside Beach resort and the following massacre and abandonment of it, Mark trying to keep the company afloat, while dealing with the grief of his wife’s terminal illness and subsequent death, not to mention that he is the cause of everything that has happened, including Connor’s life ending decision I find it all very sad and poetic There is also one sad fact about Stumbler, if you conflate him with Mark’s deceased wife, Harley He sent Mark a video trying to cheer him up, when Mark was grieving, if I remember correctly I found it to be very bittersweet Like, yeah, Mark was a major driving force behind all the tragedies, and he was an ass But still, I wouldn’t wish his wife to die because of it, and from how he sounded on the tape, he loved her very much Just sad all around
"Bucky I know you're trying to solve an arg and all but real quick let me redirect your attention to hit book one fish two fish red fish blue fish by Dr Seuss it's very important Bucky"
The best and most painful part about Shipwrecked is that no one's at fault except the corporate entity that is Broadside. Brandon was an addict who tragically died and was used as a biological experiment by Broadside. Mark was a grieving husband who was manipulated and turned into more of a monster than even the Starlings, again, by Broadside. And Connor was an innocent, caring man exposed to unspeakable man-made horrors, driven to the brink of insanity, and pushed over the edge of a spiteful death by Broadside. Mark wasn't evil for trying to save Harley, and Connor wasn't evil for putting the truth in Shipwrecked, even with the jabs at Harley. In a way, the Starlings are a microcosm for everyone under Broadside's command in this story - puppets on strings, people driven to maim and hurt one another by their corporate overlords. Lives sacrificed for no reason. People's worst moments used against them for profits and further expansion. This ain't a rat race, it's a beaver race.
The real monsters is Broadside, and I can't wait to see the next chapter to this saga. I still don't like the fact Connor used a stand-in of Mark's sick wife as a way to voice out his grievances about the company and management, its in poor taste even if Mark did deserve the flak thrown at him for mismanaging the company. The thing is though that Mark is probably the higher up running the company as its not a huge corporation with board members and stuff like that.
I do love the implication that, disregarding the need to make a convincing enough first impression so people will actually buy and play through the game, Connor couldn't help but game-ify his exposé in ways like the puzzle elements and actual tough threats to handle. On the one hand, that could absolutely be a way to keep people engaged because "why else would these dangers be here if not to guard something" but I do like to think it was a little bit of the game developer in him going "Okay I have to at least *try* to make this a *game."*
Shipwrecked 64 was one of the most fun and terrifying experiences I had ever played. The puzzles were fun, the characters are memberable, and the borderline story of the game changes everything upside down. I will always remember this game as one of my favorites of all time. And thank you pappo for letting me help in this video. It was fun!
When I saw something lurking in the letterboxing in the intro, I thought it was edited in. When I realized it *wasn't* edited in, my jaw dropped in awe and terror. I've seen games use resolution tricks to their advantage, I've seen games where you have to actively mess with the resolution to do things, I've seen games that act outside of the game window or that use a separate window for certain things. I've never seen a game do THAT, I've never seen a game use the conceit of letterboxes on the sides of the screen and allow a horrible creature to peer at you through them. Just seeing that twisted mascot moving in the margin - hells, seeing ANYTHING moving in the margin - is enough to make my skin crawl. And that's BEFORE the sheer contrast of visual styles between that and the normal graphics! It *almost* makes me wish I played this myself instead of watching a video, but I would've gotten frustrated or way too terrified or pissed off at the jumpscares (I don't do well with jumpscares), so ultimately I'm glad videos like this exist. It makes it possible for someone like me, who is neither an ARG-solver nor particularly courageous, to enjoy this sort of content without having a heart attack or getting angry.
42:39 My heart definitely dropped here when I recognized this video from my history class, didn't expect anything we learned in history to actually be helpful later in life
Here’s my five I can name off the top of my head. Shipwrecked 64, Don’t Feed the Muse, Inscryption, Coronation Day, and ESPECIALLY Gilbert Garfield. You NEED to see Gilbert Garfield. It is by far the most original, well-written, well-crafted ARG I have EVER seen.
There’s something so sad but terrifying about this, it’s different then any other horror indie game because the lore and what happened has nothing to do with the game. The game isn’t haunted or affected the characters in anyway (the opposite can be said), you can’t changed anything by getting a good ending. You’re stuck watching lives crumble and become ruined. You couldn’t save or help anyone, Brandon killed those people, Connor and mark hated each other, Broadside drove Connor to his death, Connor created all these hidden snip bits of what was going on but it happened. It’s tragic but poetic in a sense, and Squeaks D’corgeh is brilliant
This actually reminds me of Catastrophe Crow. A few similarities are: - a custom alphabet and cipher (Crow language and Beaverscratch) - mentions of a dying family member or loved one (the creator of CC's daughter and Mark's wife) -maps made of flesh.
@@Multi_fandom_man same, actually. Despite being, by the game lore, be a character made by a madness spiraling man, I really thought there is gonna be some better ending than in a "clear" version. Giving the hare some sick mechanical hands is one of the list
Shipwrecked 64.... It isn't your average horror game. It isn't your average AR Game It is however, a game that was built around false hope, tragedy, and deception. But worst of all, a case of human desperation That, and how one man's own grief and heartache singlehandedly caused the downfall of a team's collective dreams.
@nahfamyouaint you cant blame mark. His wife was dying money was low and they kept recruiting people and pouring money into the game studio just for them to come up with a average game that wasnt worth 2 years of constant money being poured into it. Infact the only one to blame here is Broadside (i forgor the name)
There are additional details after failing the 1997 mini games multiple times. After Giovanni is gone, ovens can randomnly appear in the other minigames. Likewise after Olive, an eyeless Olive will follow you. And after Walter, the lights can occasionally flicker out akin to his minigame. While less creepy, after failing Wulf’s task multiple times you can meet him in a new area where he eventually gifts the night vision that you can use in other minigames- which is really helpful for Stumbler’s as you can see where the ink is. I don’t recall what happens with failing Stumbler’s minigame but I think it’s mostly normal Edit: The secret room you found the last time you failed Giovanni’s minigame (when the ovens immediately burn) depicts a scene similar to how his VA died but with Giovanni in his place. Additiinally, you can see a large face watching you in Walter’s minigame when the lights go out
There's no overworld consequences for failing Stumbler but you do get a cutscene of him at a candle lit table looking towards a figure making sounds similar to a heart monitor. It can be presumed this is another thing tying to Mark's wife.
Thanks for the pause. I went and bought the game and gathered two freinds. Myself and two freinds worked together with no outside help to get to layer four. A band nerd, a guy in the airforce, and a programmer made a perfect team. My coder freind even had a decoding program that perfectly decoded beaver scratch. I will pause at layer 4 and we will get back too it. Thanks for showing us this masterpiece that has really brought us together.
@drewblowski we made it to layer 4. Best jumpscares we got. We were afk in the second floor lobby thinking we were safe while trying to figure out what to do. Fuckin' one of the Sterlings spawned and we freaked as we heard it getting closer. It jumpscared us good. Also we love this game so much. It's so cool.
So I'm not good with horror. I totally lock up and shut down if I'm watching anything scary. I've never beaten a single night in a FNaF game, that's how bad I am with horror. There was no way I could ever play this myself. All that being said, I can appreciate and respect horror for what it allows. I don't think this story could ever work in any other genre. And what a wonderful story it is. A story of resentment, mistakes, and mourning. Kudos to the developers, and kudos to you pappo for putting this all together so that even this wimp can experience this in some way.
I got utterly wrecked by jumpscares as a kid so now as an adult i'm just too paranoid to be able to play horror games. Back then they were loud enough to cause ear damage (tinnitus is funny to give to people right guys, right???? I just LOVE this ringing in my ears). So the only way for me to experience them now is through formats like this, other channels like Night Mind, etc.
I'm OK with horror so far the scariest game uve played is subnautica and i don't struggle with water that much but I don't think I could ever play this either
Even though I'm kind of a horror fan myself, anytime I have played the occasional horror game, I had never wanted to progress any furthur since I always get the jitters from the fear of the unknown. However, the only horror game in which I actually completed was Doki Doki Literature Club since it had a cute aesthetic to balance the horror.
I remember watching yt vids on TSV a few years back, I stopped following it because of the slow updates n the fact that the RUclipsr (who I was watching in my language), never followed up after what he left off. I honestly had no idea it was still on going when I remembered it lol (idk if it’s still on going now, even.)
I love how the restored version feels like, well a restored version. A lot of stuff like this claims it’s “restored” when it reality it’s more like a “emulation” if u will. It actually feels like a team of people did there best to stitch together a game that was left in pieces, and it’s very well done.
This was a good documentary. Whenever I see people giving their thoughts on this game they always never tried to translate the BeaverScratch language and leave the language to us, but when you cover this game, I am happy that you covered the language. Thank you and have a nice day 👍

I think my favorite part of this game are the jumpscares. I have no idea how they did it, but the way the image just meeeeelllllttttssss sends me. How Olivia’s drowns in raising water, Alex appears inside Blot, it’s so impressive.
I know this comment is 4 months old, but if you never found out, the technique is called datamoshing! It has to do with how video compression achieves smaller file sizes. Captain Disillusion talked about it in an old video debunking a conspiracy theory ("Reptillian Bieber-mosh", explaination starts at 2:28). The effect is popular enough that you can find video editing apps that can do it.
I watch long form horror content while I’m practicing the piano and I’ve been loving this video. Just went to refill my water on my break and noticed how new and under viewed this video is. Absolutely amazing stuff I really hope the algorithm blessed others as it did me. Keep up the stellar work!
Connors insensitivity on marks wife situation took me off guard. I get that marks a shitty guy but damn Connor tossing THAT at mark mid fight to try and make himself seem better really sells it on how far gone he was. And how far gone mark was..they are both victims..Connor wasn’t a bad man just pushed to the brink due to broadside doing what they did, experimenting on Brandon who was a addict, resurrecting him, his killing of the other cast members, mark being forced into situations which he didn’t make the best choices but wanted to care about his wife. All while broadside got off Scott free. I feel like broadside was experimenting on mark too, they pushed him to make ungreat choices to fuck him over. I think they picked him on purpose to see how far someone like him would go and it shows. I feel like mark was also a good man. He loved his wife, most likely he cared about his employees,up until the starlings and other things happened then broadside started using him as a scapegoat for their project someone they could blame. Him being forced to do choices he most likely didn’t want to, paired with them most likely making him do those things so the employees blamed him and not the company. My idea of the whole story goes like this, I’m gonna keep it short and simple mind you it’s just a theory and my understanding of it. The main director who was beloved died. As they where looking for a way to bring him back to one up Disney ether mark was hired during or after the search. Mark did his job amazingly so he must of been able to climb the ranks. Then the island was found. Brandon dies then used the flesh to experiment on him bringing him back. They continue to use Brandon in parks everything is fine for a bit, broadside gives Brandon the goal of killing three people who turn into the rest of the starlings. Connor starts loosing his shit, the starlings start to cause problems and broadside starts to make mark do things to slowly slander and shift the blame off of themselves. More incidents with Connor blaming mark more and antagonizing him resulting in stumbler being made as a jab at marks wife. More slander, more fights, more incidents starlings becoming more aggressive due to brain rotting, Brandon being the example, game put on shelves but with an immediate recall. After this marks calls quits on the project angering Connor who results in insulting him and his current situation. Connor’s insanity due to witnessing events unfold is at its peek causing him to finish the game to reveal the island, its secrets and what went on..revealing the creator becoming a starling in game. Before ending his life, mark and his wife’s fate is unknown to me but I assume both are dead. The island is a bonded leavening the starlings to roam with them and their minds rotting away more. With broadside getting off Scott free. The story in my mind is about a company who used its power to experiment on people and to manipulate it was never about a video game. It was about bringing the head honcho back the game was just a front for funding said research. Using a sole man as a scape goat.
I wouldn't call those two idiots victims, they made their own decisions at the end of the day and they were the wrong ones. I refuse to give any sympathy to someone who can just leave a situation, regardless of how "hard" it maybe. Cause any time I hear that, what happened afterward is always worse than what might have happened if they jumped ship. other than that good theory.
@@kacecrimson8297 I can (sort of?) relate to Connor. I deal with suicidal thoughts on the daily, and I could see how seeing all that crazy shit from broadside and the stress of game development, and don't forget having your boss shit on your work instead of telling them what was really going on. That doesn't make him or Mark right in their actions, but I can understand what led to it. Imo looking at this whole thing and saying that Connor and Mark are an issue kinda sounds like you didn't really appreciate the depth of it.(No offense ofc) I mean, shining a negative light on those two is EXACTLY what broadside would do. If you focus on the shitty actions of these guys, the fewer eyes on the real horrors the corporation committed.

Ever since then his video on this game has been one of my most favourite videos on his channel. I've watched it 8 times i think, i always felt like he didn't see everything and this game is really mysterious with an interesting story so im so glad to see you covering it! :D Sorry for the long comment 💀 Epic edit: wow this thumbnail art is really good you fr need more compliments on your thumbnails
I sitted, for an hour and a half, wondering how this game was that immersive, I usually expected for something similiar to the "cool happy game to ruthless and violent game" but it was just the emotion of a man who took his life, I needed to write this because I was impressed, but also impressed by how pappo describes AND interpresents it, I admit i couldn't survive layer 3 without a guide, but the way this video represents the game, just takes everything about it, except you actually doing the puzzles, and show it like a movie, and I say thank you, because I needed a story-telling like this for a lot of time.
It’s not a peaceful ending of Conner accepting he was in the wrong, he isn’t apologizing to mark and thanking him, he’s throwing one more jab, the last nail in the metaphorical coffin
probably one of the coolest shipwrecked videos I’ve seen. I’ve been into broadside beach since around its inception and it’s so neat to see an analysis like this !!
I think you hit all the marks on the story and it makes perfect sense. Mark, who became desperate to gain money for his sick wife, especially after Broadside Beach closed down due to the Brandon Lester murders, ends up doing layoffs and budget cuts which affected Cogwear who was making a game for Broadside at the time. I think Connor was a jerk since the start especially since Stumbler and Chief Wolf have been around since before the big argument (Mark complains about non-Broadside characters in the game before the big argument). So he was literally voicing his grievances about his boss through a literal stand-in for his boss' sick wife, an actual a-hole. Eventually their studio gets closed down and Connor turns the game into a last hurrah by filling it with damning evidence against Broadside Animations. The only plot hole here is how did Connor get access to footage of the Brandon Lester murders since Broadside Beach where the murders happened was closed down and the starlings were left to roam it as it was too expensive to destroy them. Additionally the husks are also an enigma, Broadside Beach did have multiple generations of experiments before they deemed starlings to be successful (if you call living corpses forced to wear a mascot suit to hide their rotting bodies a success).
@@4zy1 Most likely just other people in mascot suits because the starlings are just reanimated corpses who wear the mascot costumes to hide their rotting bodies. Free labor + lab rats to progress the starling experiments.
Man i dont lnow how i feel about the starlings. I mean a voice actor snapping and killing his coworkers is fine as a plot element, especially with the reveal at the end that the game is one part whistleblower report one part suicide note, but like. The costumes are alive and ressurect the dead? Where the hell did that come from? It feels like it comes from an entirely different project.
Honestly I agree somewhat. Though for me, regardless if they were starlings or just a crazed killer, everything involving that portion of the story feels so disconnected from the rest of the plot and narrative. I think it would've helped if it was weaved better into everything else rather than feeling like a disconnected event.
One could argue that, since the starlings were a way for people to live past death, they were probably some sort of experiment that Mark intended to use on his dying wife at some point, another means to try and keep her alive. But when things went wrong with the starlings, he probably didn’t go through with it. It would make sense since the game has established that most of Marks decisions and actions we’ve seen so far seemed to have been motivated by the desire to keep his wife alive, even if it was at the expense of others. And we do know that he had a hand in the creation of the starlings.
I saw a theory somewhere in the comments section suggesting that maybe connor went crazy and made the whole thing up out of insanity. I personally like that a lot better, but it does get complicated by some of the yt videos. I genuinely feel like that would be a way better story, even if it loses the fantastical elements.
@@thegatekeeperm8183 considering that blunder cover thing is still being worked on, it disproves the theory that it was made up, this alongside some of the old shipwrecked videos by squeaks What I will say while I try to completely understand this story is that the guy who helped work on this 2023 version is his son, who seems to be the protagonist who’s trying to learn about the past that his father was connected to
In my perspective, i think that the true ending tells us that the bucky we play as is supposed to be Connor in some kinda purgatory before or after his death, watching what his game has become. Im probably wrong and glossing over some stuff, but again, just my perspective :)
it's so surreal watching someone I knew in a Discord make a banger ARG. But also there's so many details in this I love, the fact Olivia's the most dangerous out of the Starlings 'cause she was the first victim. The subversion of us playing as Bucky instead of him being a stand in for Brandon. Also the saddest aspect that like, Bucky knew the Starlings as his friends originally, and now has to fear for his life against something that isn't them and he didn't even do!
51:54 I love this project, but I think there's a lesson here they could've taken from PT. It had it's own jump-scares, sure, but they were few and far between, and if memory serves(not like I can boot it up to refresh my memory lol), they were pretty easy to avoid. Point being, Kojima also wanted it to be a community effort that would take most people a long time to figure, and knew how miserable it'd be if the ghost lady chased you down to scream in your face every 20 seconds *while* you're trying to solve puzzles. Most of the game had a subtle horror underlying it while occasionally throwing you into a moment of terror. The red hallway, getting locked in the bathroom, the ghost lady slowly walking towards you. The starlings in shipwrecked would have been way more impactful if they were used in a similar way.
"I won't know what the truth is unless it's thrown at me like shit from a monkey" 1. That made me laugh way harder than it probably should have. 2. Relatable
Aww man I forget where I could have seen it before but the distorted closeup on the creature realising you're there before it starts chasing you is cool as hell.
26:10 I have two theories as to why Brandon is killing the voice actors. Number 1, He sees them as a threat. Brandon doesn’t want them becoming more popular than him, better than him. The fact that there’s statues of him every time another voice actor is killed seems to help support this even further. The statues also appear to be gold. Brandon wants to remain the golden star of the cast. He is seemingly the main character/face of the franchise, after all. Number 2, He wants the gang all together. Brandon is killing the voice actors so that all of them are made into starlings. Maybe it’s so he isn’t alone in this fate of being some immortal mascot, or just because he wants everyone on equal footing. The reasoning could maybe even tie back into my first theory! Who knows, haha. Not even halfway into the video as of writing this, but I’m super invested! Can’t wait to see the rest of it. Awesome work, my mans.
Is Stumbler’s tape a reference to Pokemon Abridged? There’s an episode where nurse joy watches a video of her past self and says something pretty similar, along with the “you look great today” thing at the end. Unless that was a reference to something else too.
Honestly the thing I loved the most about this game, is that it's not a "people dying and are now possessing the game/characters" that has been an ongoing cliché in some indie horror media for the past years (that's unfortunately not really well done most of the times tbh) but rather the story of a game dev who decided to show everything wrong that was happening under the covers of a rotting company, and it's also really amazing that the creators managed to make flawed characters, there's no "good vs evil", there's just characters who made horrible things but were also just trying to live their lives. Ngl I'm still a bit confused about the people dressed as characters killing other people but one day I might put my brain to work and figure it out lol

I dont know if its mentioned anywhere but after getting the "secret" in the second failure attempt in Giovani's game, you can drop out of the map for a scene similar to the third fail Olivia scene. Just something ive found but never heard mentioned since it doesn't follow the order of everything else
I've gotta say, Squeaks really surprised me by deciding to make Connor even more of an unsympathetic jerk than he already was in the demo (it seems to me that Connor had Liz create Stumbler *before* The Conversation). With that in mind, it really makes one wonder: did the "Starlings" ever exist at all? Or did Connor just invent them as part of his cancellation-induced mental breakdown and vendetta against Mark? I mean, which is more likely: that this story with no other supernatural elements also includes living mascot suits and a secret underground flesh cavern and that somehow the only guy who was able to discover this was a game dev--and that that game dev would, rather than going to the media or police, stuff those secrets in a game and then commit suicide--or that Connor was, in a word, nuts?
What no, it was all Mark's fault, did you even watch the rest of the video? Connor as a character is an imperfect person who was broken down to the point of taking his own life, who had made some not very good, emotionally charged decisions that weren't completely thought out that wasn't fair to Elizabeth or Harley but does that make him horrible? Unsympathetic? Of frickin course not, he's written to be flawed and in the end, the reason why the game finally is released to the public, is to honor his memory. To honor who he was. And to show what Mark did to him and so many other characters. To show the truth. The characters who released the game found out the truth before us for goodness sake and still did for Connor! Including Connor's own son and two ex devs! Connor isn't unsympathetic. None of the characters are. Heck, you can even sympathize with Mark! Mark! To call Connor anything but a complicated character who we can sympathize with and feel bad for is I feel a very massive misinterpretation of the game as a whole. As well as ignoring the game's ending!
@@frogchamp. Shipwrecked is an exception imo, it does supernatural horror really well. And if wasn't supernatural, how would things like the Starlings in the game and Bucky being self-aware be explained? Did Connor just program those? Seems a bit unlikely.
@@4zy1 well considering all the fnaf lore bs that we have been eating the past years id believe that he did. i mean the developer wanted to disprove the dream theory because fans hated it so much he added a lot of other stuff only to come back and say it was all just a game. im going to be honest with you id much more believe that all of it was made up for the sake of making an actual horror game experience. and not a walking simulator but in 3d.

ARGs are meant to be playable!! Or at least interactable. They're called Alternate Reality GAMES for a reason!! Some people call random horror stuff "ARG"s when it's usually just a horror series. ARGs have interaction! Like playable games, or being able to directly alter the course of the plot as players. Just a little comment I had to make after hearing "it's playable". Watching the rest of the video rn
@@pappo447 Yaya I get that. Just a little thing I wanted to say since I see a lot of confusion around it. Honestly considering playing it myself since it seems like it'd be a really immersive experience for the ARG. Very good video so far btw!! Definitely subscribing.
It seems to me that Chief Wolf isn't actually Connor, but Mark. The wolf is always associated with the rabbit. The wolf captured Bucky and his friends. The wolf is letting everyone fall instead of trying to save them, simply clinging to what he has instead. That sounds like how Connor would describe Mark to me. And given the fact that Connor made the game, it seems more likely to me that Connor is actually represented by *Bucky*, and not just because of the ending. Because Bucky's journey would reflect what Connor views he went through: he tried to make the game, complete the hero's journey, but instead got screwed over by Mark who, as far as he was considered, was screwing everyone over to hold onto the hope for his wife being okay. Shipwrecked 2022 is the last team members working together with the new team to give a happy ending that no one involved was actually able to reach. That's why you can save the wolves. Because if Bucky and his friends are the Dev team, then the wolves are Broadside. And while they likely didn't know about the contents of, or understand, Connor's ramblings in the original game, all they can do is let the characters rest even if the people they represent never got to. Shipwrecked 1997 is the last ditch effort of a broken man, who found out what the company he worked for was doing, and maybe he turned a blind eye for a while hoping he'd still get to make his dream work, but the second that was taken from him he had nothing left to give. Connor isn't a hero, but he thinks he is. He thinks he doesn't deserve to be fired, and honestly I think he's wrong. Overpromising in game design is common, and I wouldn't be surprised if on his side he felt he was *owed* the chance to finish the game *because* he found out about the dirty secrets and did nothing about them. He kept his mouth shut, and for what? And then he's willing to traumatize children playing his game if it will tear down Mark with him. That's not a hero. Chief Wolf is a man who is strict, and thinks that keeping his pack in the dark is the best way to protect them from the truth. Bucky is a bright young lad who wants to adventure with his friends, who discovers a world he never wanted to see. Mark, and Connor. ...That got a bit away from me I wasn't expecting to ramble so long, oops

@@randomaccountwithmusic4206yes
@@randomaccountwithmusic4206since it’s an ARG it’s fully fake. The game never existed before 2023.
One thing I love about the Starlings is that ingame, they look like they're constantly trying to render at a higher polygon count than the N64 could have handled. They constantly shift between high and low detail models across their form.
I was so scared when they were chasing Bucky I never stopped to notice that.
I think my favorite has to be Blot/Rex. While the other's feel like they were put into the game with context going by what we've learned. The fact that Rex, glitches for lack of a better term, into existence, and in a place that should be safe no less, just makes him feel wrong in a good way
The N64 could actually easily handle over 4K polygons at 30 FPS the thing that brought the N64 down was its HORRIBLE memory
You did a great job on the voice acting!
Holy shit, you kicked _ass,_ man. Mark's various breakdowns were some of the _highlights_ of the game for me.
Holy shit dude, you did amazing as Mark Mullins. Genuinely- props.
I read this whole thing in Mark's voice and it felt like a behind-the-scenes special feature.
@@twindrill2852oh yeah, it was definitely a parallel to that

something rlly cool that not a lot of people talk about is how each of the caught jump scares dissolve into how the person who caught you died.

Kangaroo*
You're talking about ripper roo, who is a kangaroo wearing a straight jacket '^^
To the fair the Different Direction is the realistic one lol. Or maybe I'm just biased.

I had a feeling that was the case. Shame that had to happen and the fact they’re Wandering a now abandoned island in a ghost resort.
This game hides a full-on Shakespearean tragedy behind the scenes: life and death of Bucky’s creator that is similar in many ways to Walt Disney, the many victims of the Broadside Beach resort and the following massacre and abandonment of it, Mark trying to keep the company afloat, while dealing with the grief of his wife’s terminal illness and subsequent death, not to mention that he is the cause of everything that has happened, including Connor’s life ending decision

This ain't a rat race, it's a beaver race.
fr, this almost feels like a meta critique on corporate negligence, it's sad

I don’t recall what happens with failing Stumbler’s minigame but I think it’s mostly normal
Edit: The secret room you found the last time you failed Giovanni’s minigame (when the ovens immediately burn) depicts a scene similar to how his VA died but with Giovanni in his place.

Hope you guys are able to finish it soon!!
Kudos to the developers, and kudos to you pappo for putting this all together so that even this wimp can experience this in some way.

yes thank you. I love horror but lack some of the understanding to understand some of the nuance. awesome video

I know this comment is 4 months old, but if you never found out, the technique is called datamoshing! It has to do with how video compression achieves smaller file sizes.
Using a sole man as a scape goat.
yeah i agree
Makes sense tbh
Mark is the director of broadside
Imo looking at this whole thing and saying that Connor and Mark are an issue kinda sounds like you didn't really appreciate the depth of it.(No offense ofc) I mean, shining a negative light on those two is EXACTLY what broadside would do. probably one of the coolest shipwrecked videos I’ve seen.
Additionally the husks are also an enigma, Broadside Beach did have multiple generations of experiments before they deemed starlings to be successful (if you call living corpses forced to wear a mascot suit to hide their rotting bodies a success).
this just makes me wonder, how did they get the starlings for the commercial? unless those were extra costumes.
@@4zy1 Most likely just other people in mascot suits because the starlings are just reanimated corpses who wear the mascot costumes to hide their rotting bodies. Free labor + lab rats to progress the starling experiments.
@@4zy1 They're probably just different actors in costumes.
theres a note somewhere about how he grabbed the wrong flashdrive. he brought his own flashdrive of the presentation he was giving to mark
@@momentaryretrospect5967in all fairness, considerint we will get more games relating to shipwrecked’s universe, it may go further into this
One could argue that, since the starlings were a way for people to live past death, they were probably some sort of experiment that Mark intended to use on his dying wife at some point, another means to try and keep her alive.
@@thegatekeeperm8183 considering that blunder cover thing is still being worked on, it disproves the theory that it was made up, this alongside some of the old shipwrecked videos by squeaks
What I will say while I try to completely understand this story is that the guy who helped work on this 2023 version is his son, who seems to be the protagonist who’s trying to learn about the past that his father was connected to
In my perspective, i think that the true ending tells us that the bucky we play as is supposed to be Connor in some kinda purgatory before or after his death, watching what his game has become.
Finally someone explaining the lore, thank you so much for taking the time to doing this.
"I won't know what the truth is unless it's thrown at me like shit from a monkey"
1. That made me laugh way harder than it probably should have.
2. Relatable
OH THANK GOD ITS NOT A POSSESSION STORY AGAIN AND ACTUALLY A CLEVER MASCOT SYSTEM
Which pokemon abridged? 👀
Shipwrecked 64 is my Roman Empire. This honestly might be on the same level as fnaf for me.
I lik how when the starlings show up, much lik the burt the turtle song that plays when the starlings appear, you have to “duck and cover” (aka hide in a barrel) also the audio tape about the sun being a carrot, is from the national film board of canada film “frank the wrabbit,”

I mean, which is more likely: that this story with no other supernatural elements also includes living mascot suits and a secret underground flesh cavern and that somehow the only guy who was able to discover this was a game dev--and that that game dev would, rather than going to the media or police, stuff those secrets in a game and then commit suicide--or that Connor was, in a word, nuts?
honestly id like it if they didnt exist, we literally cannot have horror these days without supernatural elements which is kinda sucky

I meant "its playable" in a literal sense
@@pappo447 Yaya I get that. Just a little thing I wanted to say since I see a lot of confusion around it.
Honestly considering playing it myself since it seems like it'd be a really immersive experience for the ARG.
Very good video so far btw!! Definitely subscribing.
34:45 love how the creator voiced Nub for this segment
