  • Today Tom shares why the quality of your contracting work doesn't sell the jobs. He's not saying the craftsmanship doesn't matter, but the quality is not going to sell the construction projects. He also shares 3 things that ARE important to your contracting business prospects and how to sell construction projects.

Been in the trades for 40 years & I can say this is 100% correct. Selling is a learned skill which most contractors ignore.Nothing happens until you make a sale. Sell once, deliver excellent craftsmanship, & they keep coming back

    great insightful points.
I had a customer ( who is a repeat at this point) tell me that she enjoyed seeing our crew enjoy each other's company. I still remember it because it was at that point that I realized how important it is for people to have good energy come into their house. no one wants sad, stressed out tradesman around. Customers don't want em and I won't hire them as subs.. brings everyone down and the work suffers.

I hate how truthful this statement is. I was the greatest technician in Arizona 2 years ago... being an owner I learned that clients have zero interest in the intricacies of cable management, special anchors, network speeds. They want it to work and work well and that's it.

I’ve posted a few places on the Contractor Fight; I’m a customer, not a contractor.
My husband and I have waited 30 years to do our renovation. I have talked to 5 builders and NOT ONE of them has done what Tom is describing in this video. Not one has taken a sincere or anything close to a deep dive in the motive or motivation. And I’ll tell you if someone did that this would be sold because he’s exactly right. Yes I want a high-quality kitchen, a professional team, at a fair price, but I view it as a lack of respect to not take time to 1) discuss why I care so much about this which is very emotional to me and 2) show enthusiasm to work with us on this project.
Listen folks, corporations with multi million dollar budgets fuss over issuing a P.O. for what the average consumer would pay for a renovation of the first floor of their home; so you better believe it is a very big deal to the average consumer to spend that kind of money with a builder!!😮

l was literally watching this as I was doing up a bid and for shits and giggles decided to add another $1k on to the job. 20 minutes later I sent the bid and called the owner to go over and they were stoked on my price. My mind is bending listening to you Tom. I cant wait to work it out to come to summit this next year.

How does someone who takes pride in their craftsmanship and actually goes overboard with everything they do roll that back so they can be more productive? I try to all the time but it’s really really hard for me to do that. When I see some thing that’s wrong I have to fix it or if I’m doing something every step of the way I have to use the best method that I’m aware of even if it takes twice as long. I can’t help it but sometimes it’s ridiculous and I end up making less money than the people that come throw shit together and it’s not right.

    • @brocksloan6144

Sounds like you truly care about your finished product and customer satisfaction. As far as speeding it up look for methods to reduce time but never sacrifice quality for quantity. If you do the job below your standards and don’t get the next jobs from them or referrals was it worth it??

@@nothankyou2.0 thank you thank you. I'm working on it. I've been doing better the past couple months but it is difficult. I catch myself sometimes being "OCD" I call it. Then I'll snap out of it for a couple of hours at least. Thanks for the advice.

@@brocksloan6144 I definitely understand that. I'm not sure where the perfectionism comes from but it's really frustrating sometimes. If I'm doing some thing for myself at my own home or for a relative everything's perfect but when I'm on the job it's frustrating. I don't know where it came from but I think it gets reinforced every time I'm doing a job or making a repair on some thing that was just recently done by another company. Done poorly and improperly. I work by myself so obviously I can't do everything that comes across my plate so often, I'll get called out for repair when there is been two or three companies out there recently and all billed for the repair and it was paid. They know when they called me. It'll be the last time they have an issue. I don't get callbacks. I started Roofing on the weekends with my older brother when I was 11. I've never once in my life had a call back for a roof roof repair or any water intrusion. I like to keep it that way. I just need a reminder and I have to constantly tell myself go go go that's already better than 95% of other companies. Go go go!!
