This scene explains why the voice of Red XIII changed in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Intro Music: www.bensound.com #finalfantasy #finalfantasy7 #finalfantasy7rebirth
honestly ruined him for me.. can't take him seriously after the change. He had the Gravitas, Badassery and Mature tone and attitude to him before. After the change, his 'fake' cool persona gets fucking obliterated beyond existence, no sign of it for the rest of my gameplay. So, doggy is now warming up the bench like a good little doggy it is
Yeah, just found out that shit now. I think it really feels out of place and unnecessary. Just show his both "sides" through the dialogue and interpretation, not by making two completely different voices, even if its the same guy doing it. May be the biggest flaw in an almost flawless game.
He always looked to me as far more of a lion than a pupper. All his physical features are more feline than canine. The only canine feature he has is howling.
@@jonesygrets6029 He has the snout of a canine and none-retractable claws, and howls upon seeing his father's petrified corpse. He also refers to himself as "lab-rat-dog" in FF7: Remake.
@@jonesygrets6029 I think they deliberately gave him both canine and feline features just to mess with us. Also, to add to his canine features, he wags his tail and pants when pleased. Cats wag their tails when angry/annoyed and pant when they're so stressed they pretty much are having a panic attack.
The reason the original didn’t have this detail is because it didn’t have voice acting. Now that we have a voiced over remake, it seems the writers wanted to emphasize the “I think I grew up a little” line from the original by making Nanaki sound like a teen pretending to be an older guy, referencing how slow he ages. An interesting creative liberty, to say the least.
It's actually in the OG too, at least in Japanese. Apparently in the original, the entire manner in which his speech is written changes once he returns to Cosmo.
Yes I seem to remember. It was harder to tell in the English localization than the original Japanese but it’s much more fully realized now. I for one love it.
What really gets me thinking is how this voice reveal is quite an overarching theme with FF7's characters: Hiding their true selves and feelings with "alternate" selves as a coping mechanism for their insecurities and trauma. I think many, if not all of our protagonists go through this journey in some way- Cloud being the major example. He likes to think he's this badass, cold hearted SOLDIER, but we know that's just a facade. His real self is buried in this deep guilt and shame, and you can see his uncertainty and anxiety clearly in several scenes throughout the Remake when his facade cracks- because he knows deep down it's not his true self. So when I see Red's reveal at being a young teenager for his race, and having put on this adult facade for fear of being looked down upon and not being respected- but then eventually growing comfortable enough to be his true self with the party and keeping that younger voice and personality for the rest of the game because that's who he really is... I find that thematic parallel really fascinating. Though it may be played off in a bit of a humorous way, I personally feel it's no less relevant in contributing to its character themes. Cloud has to go through this transformation too, needing to shed the cool but false persona and letting his true self resurface for his genuine well being. And being able to do this will happen because, just like how Nanaki grows to trust the party to be his true self, so too is Cloud. Though his personality may be awkward, unsure and maybe even a bit dopey at times like Red is shown to be- it's who they really are. There should be no shame in being your openly true self if it means abandoning those falsehoods. Because ultimately, nothing real can come from being a false self. To let those insecurities and falsehoods rule over you will only make you into their puppet- a compelling reason for Cloud to grow beyond them. That's just my 2 humble, overthinking cents haha.
@@brendanmoi sounds kinda forced. what about the rest of the characters? cloud has way more baggage than just shame and guilt. Nanaki is still considered a teen so it's quite normal. It always odd seeing people doing the true self thing and kinda throwing away we are the good and bad parts. persona 4 has this in spades. It is the reason i like Rise. both parts are you and you shouldn't deny that. Fear is also that part. I put two and two together and figured Nanaki was a bit childish in the OG game, but this emphasized that subtle character trait so well, I was in shock on how much they were wanting to angle that approach.
I knew they recorded separate dialogue for post Cosmo Canyon but I thought that was because his name was actually going to change to Nanaki, menus and all, wasn’t expecting a voice change.
I like the idea of this, but I think they did it in kind of an over the top way. It sounds like two different characters completely. Was actually surprised it was the same voice actor. Doesn’t sound entirely realistic
I don't mind that they wanted to go this route, but I do dislike his "young" voice. It reminds me of Anakin Skywalker and how he just sounded WAAAAY too much like a bratty child than an adult. I would be okay if he was faking his deeper voice and actually spoke differently when around family, but this is way too much, he sounds and acts like a 10 year old. Also going back and forth between the two voices causes severe whiplash because they're so drastically different.
I always knew that Nanaki had been masking his true personality in the OG. It was a lot harder to notice due to early Translations and all that in 1997 but once you're in Cosmo his way of speaking and personality for the the rest of the game does a complete 180. Especially once he faces the truth.
This happened in the original as well but due to no voice acting back in the original FF7 the best they could do was change his dialogue to have a type of country accent in JP version.
@@orrthehunterand before anyone says “the original English version didn’t have that detail”, it’s been known since forever now that the translation for the OG FFVII was a rush job done by like one guy.

Funny how knowing Red’s VA is Max Mittelman, I was jokingly imagining Red speaking in his Ryuji voice, and then Rebirth came out and now that it caught me off guard, I can never unhear him as this voice! 🤣
The worst part is. There was absolutely no build up to this. I’ve seen people say : “it’s his character development” tryna sound intelligent. I’m sorry bro. This just happened instantaneously. You arrive at grand Canyon : “this is my real name, this is my real voice, this is my real age. You know that character you’ve grown to love in both the previous game and this game for over 100 hours? Syke ! He’s gone now”. Then people tryna sound intelligent go on to say : “yeah but the party reacts shocked, it is a plot twist it makes sense”. It doesn’t make sense at all. In reality the party looks a bit confused for about 5 seconds and you get 1 line from Barret about it. After that they just accept it no problem. Makes perfect sense. This is not how a 15-16 year old sounds. He sounds like he just hit his toe against the coffeetable. And is now holding in his tears, as soon as someone says are you okay ? He’ll burst out in tears. Oh and ofcourse he has Daddy issues now. That storyline is already so bad. But having it come up out of nowhere makes it way worse. Yeah. As you can tell Red was my favorite character up until the moment you step into that city. Intelligent people will say “yeah it is also like that in the OG game”. No dude. Im 30. I grew up on that. It was nothing like that in the og game. There wasn’t even voice acting in that game. The japanese version did this transition way better. The English actor did a fantastic job with the old voice. But he really overdid it for the young one.
They sort of address here in Rebirth, after he drop the fake old persona act he still at times revert back to his old voice in certain moment past this point from time to time,to either sound cool or when he is between people he don't feel as close with,in the Advent Children case he have but one line and a lot of people was present,so you could take it as one of those few moments where he speaks with his fake voice rather then real one, past that Nanaki simply never speak even when he appear in Dirge of Cerberus he have no voice lines, the remake was simply the best moment to correct the mistake that happened in the english script in the translation of his behaviour (since there was no voice acting) past Cosmo Canyon.
Not to stir shit up, but I think Mittelman went a little too young sounding. To me, he comes across sounding like an excitable 13 or 14 year old, rather than the equivalent of a 16 year old. 48 years of living may not have the same affect on physical development for a long living fictional character like Red, but 48 years of living would at least have had some affect on the character's emotional maturity... The voice and personality change to the extreme that it is, was a bad "creative" decision.
Nanaki is actually a small kid. He is masking it with an old man voice because he wants the rest or strangers to treat him as an equal. He's 40+ years but in nanaki species that's equivalent to human 10+ years. He switches back and forth in his voice depending on how comfortable he is with someone. This happens in the OG as well, just without voice acting
Of all the story changes they’ve done. This is one they should have changed and ignored the original. LOVED his other voice and I HATE this teenager annoying whiny voice. Instantly somewhat ruined the character. It makes heavy plot moments less impactful, especially when it’s about him. Respect for sticking with the original, but fuck me they should NOT have done it. This is going to get such a massive fucking backlash the more people get to this point. Hopefully they’ll make him switch his voice more often than not as best case if they intend to keep this teenager voice alongside the “equal” voice.
I was starting to think i was in the twilight zone and was the only one who felt this way. How many developer hands did thisnpass through with nobody putting a stop to this terrible decision. It will undermine everything he's in from here on out.
They ruined him...I liked more when he sounded like a wise old man. He IS wiser than the rest of the party, even Barret. They changed not only his voice, but his personality
I absolute agree with you. I hate it too. Red was mostly of the time in my team, but now I kicked him out forever. I can't hear this annoying childish voice anymore.
This makes a lot of sense, if he's about as mature as a teenager. Putting on a voice to seem older and more mature around a species that cant tell how old you are is a good way to look "more mature."
I do not like the voice change. It makes Red XIII sound like he's got Multiple personalities. Have his deep voice but have an act. He can act like the sage old man, but then has this cute excited attitude. I do not like his twink voice, and hate listening to it.
First off: I don't know why, but I always imagined Nanuki to have the voice of Aslan or something, but he is still really young, so it fits Also, someone needs to cut the scene with Barret out of context it would be the funniest thing ever.
They should just go with a half heavy voice if they think to many of the male characters sound overly serious or to simular. Instead of going back, and forth is just weird.
I was looking forward to cosmo canyon and getting Red's backstory for ages in this game only to get there and find they absolutely diddled my favourite character in the space of a few seconds. If it was just a voice change I could potentially deal with it but he does a complete personality shift and starts saying dweeby things in combat like "did i do good or did i do good?" Fml.. and the explanation is that he wanted them to treat him like an equal? What by being a poser? And how quickly the change happens and the party just accepts it like "you were just pretending to be cool this whole time? Ok". Worst thing in this game. I want lab rat dog back. Fuck nanaki.
This caught me totally off guard. It was really jarring, and his explanation for using a "fake" voice was pretty dumb. I'm not sure what they were thinking. I have a feeling part 3 is going to be full of bad decisions like this.
This is poor writing. If they did it right then I wouldn’t have had to look this up. I remember the conversations about his aging but this sounds like two different voice actors. Subtlety would have been less patronizing to the players and to the character.
How to ruin an iconic character: Who was the idiot who though changing NANAKI's voice was a good idea? Not only that but change his Personality Completely. For some reason they wanted to destroy all character development and image without reason
I understand why the change but I unfortunately don’t like the new younger voice at all. I guess it’s just something I pictured differently in my mind back during the PS1 days.
All the people complaining bout this "Change" I knew this was going to happen years ago after hearing about how zooted the OG tranlation was in Tim ROgers "a long translation of FF7" IE in the newer tranlations of FF7 original (and the original japanese on PS1) this was always his character arc. It just didnt have voices
Ok, but why does he start acting like a literal child? It's just character assassination. The devs are mad that everyone likes him for some reason. Thats why CC was quarter assed and treated like shit.
@Pikaman20008 equivelent =/= lived time. Otherwise, you're saying that his entire race is effectively toddlers for 10 years. Bugen was saying that as far as lifespan goes, hes only 15. Not 'hes a 12 year old, lol.' Thats why this is so fucking stupid. 50 years, and he's still 'YAR HAR MATIES PIRATWS ARE COOL, I'M PERFECT!' No, of course not. That's why this change doesn't work. It's like just because your dog 'ages 7 years for every one of yours' doesn't mean hes literally experiencing seven years, just that as far as life expectancy goes, he'll live to 10, which would be like 70 to them.
@@daistellae I suppose so, but it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility since those Shinra experiments Oh and Sora from KH called he wants his voice actor back lol
LAME. They massacred my boy. Every line delivery by "childish" Red is peak cringe. They infantilized him for no good reason. 👎 It's such an unnecessary character change that's more confusing than fitting. We hear dialogue behind closed doors of his childish voice with the subtitle (????) revealing that it is unknown whom is speaking. There's no reason that this couldn't have simply been revealed to the player immediately while still keeping it a secret from the rest of the party. It only made me wonder if someone or something was inhabiting Red's body to control him. I'm disappointed that they took a cool character and turned him into baby Simba. Any creature living for 48 years wouldn't be THIS childish. In the OG FF7, learning about his father's sacrifice inspired him to join Cloud in trying to save the Planet. Instead, he's now this cute puppy-cat who is scared of everything and growls at anything that makes him uncomfortable. But now! He's so so brave! He's not afraid of anything! That trope was lame in the 90s and it's lame now. Yet he still hops between his cool dude voice and his childish baby voice. He seems like a character that was never truly comfortable being himself, which I can see the beauty in that seeing as that is a very human experience. I just have to remind myself, this Red XIII is an entirely different character than FF7 Red XIII. It's hard to separate the two characters as their own, but they are. His original character arc was inspiring. His dialogue and story in this game is hard to stomach. I think most of the characters were pretty well-written, especially Barret, but Red XIII in this game is a character I'd prefer to forget.
This is laughable. What a dreadful game. What a moronic choice. In the original his dialog changes after Cosmo Canyon. So Square decides let's change the voice too!!! How the fuk does that make any sense? It sounds like 2 completely different people.
OK but they literally characterize Cid's dialogue in the original with a southern accent and southern slang, did you not play the game? Also Cait Sith is from Scottish folklore and had a scottish accent in Advent Children soooo....?
Actually, it will be the same in Japanese. Red XIII is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi (Teddie/Kuma from Persona 4) in Japanese, so expect him to get a cheery and a bit annoying voice when you reach Cosmo Canyon xD

It sounds and looks a little weird to hear that voice come out of red
LMAO TIFA'S REACTION
Was thrown off at first and excepted it. He just reminds me of simba from lion king.
his HOLY GOBULIES dropped ?
wait he's grogu now.
I thought this was going to be a video explaining why red 13’s voice changes.
He was the best character and now he's the worst...after Caith of course.
@@EricFCB8699 yup, he's permanent backline materia incubator now. I don't even give him a summon, out of spite.
Help me understand. I though he is just hojo's experiment? Now he's got a HOME town?
He always had a hometown. He was kidnapped by Shinra for hojo to experiment on.
Hojo wanted to breed red and aerith
0:50-exactly what i said Barret!
Awwww....I liked Red...I mean Nanaki voices! It's cute!:)
I think it's perfect representation of Nanaki 😊
Monumentally poor decision.
YEAH BUT KNOWBODY TALKS ABOUT IT IN THE PARTY THEY LIKE OK NEW VOICE
This makes a lot of sense, if he's about as mature as a teenager. Putting on a voice to seem older and more mature around a species that cant tell how old you are is a good way to look "more mature."
I do not like the voice change. It makes Red XIII sound like he's got Multiple personalities. Have his deep voice but have an act. He can act like the sage old man, but then has this cute excited attitude. I do not like his twink voice, and hate listening to it.
First off: I don't know why, but I always imagined Nanuki to have the voice of Aslan or something, but he is still really young, so it fits
Also, someone needs to cut the scene with Barret out of context it would be the funniest thing ever.
You should watch this clip in japanese. Barret is even better when he mimics Nanaki
Because he's a kid...
They should just go with a half heavy voice if they think to many of the male characters sound overly serious or to simular. Instead of going back, and forth is just weird.
so he is just a child.........
In human years he is literally 15 years old. So yeah, he is a kid still.
I thought he sounded too old to be 16. I know he's technically 48 but biological he's 16. I guess his species age 3 times slower then humans.
Honestly like his older voice more…
This caught me totally off guard.
Forty-what😂😂😂
He has a voice actor in advent children why not use him
Id like his teenage voice I find it annoying the rough deeper one sounded way better
How to ruin an iconic character:
Who was the idiot who though changing NANAKI's voice was a good idea? Not only that but change his Personality Completely. For some reason they wanted to destroy all character development and image without reason
I understand why the change but I unfortunately don’t like the new younger voice at all.
I guess it’s just something I pictured differently in my mind back during the PS1 days.
Same here! I like his adult voice
I do it fits him quite well, we already have a deep voice in the group with Barrett.
@@sharynmorgan944no it doesnt at all.
His other voice is good but his other voice is pure dogshit
I wanted for you to treat me as a equal not as a dog 😂red you changed your voice again! Dahh!!
wtf? nanaki why did you change your mood?! 😂😂😂
All the people complaining bout this "Change" I knew this was going to happen years ago after hearing about how zooted the OG tranlation was in Tim ROgers "a long translation of FF7"
IE in the newer tranlations of FF7 original (and the original japanese on PS1) this was always his character arc. It just didnt have voices
Ok, but why does he start acting like a literal child?
It's just character assassination. The devs are mad that everyone likes him for some reason. Thats why CC was quarter assed and treated like shit.
…because he is a literal child. Bugenhagen says that he’s essentially equivalent to a 16 year old
@@Pikaman20008 you don't know how time works, do you?
@@TheDapperDragon I’m literally quoting the game dude
@Pikaman20008 equivelent =/= lived time.
Otherwise, you're saying that his entire race is effectively toddlers for 10 years.
Bugen was saying that as far as lifespan goes, hes only 15. Not 'hes a 12 year old, lol.'
Thats why this is so fucking stupid. 50 years, and he's still 'YAR HAR MATIES PIRATWS ARE COOL, I'M PERFECT!'
No, of course not. That's why this change doesn't work.
It's like just because your dog 'ages 7 years for every one of yours' doesn't mean hes literally experiencing seven years, just that as far as life expectancy goes, he'll live to 10, which would be like 70 to them.
@@Pikaman20008 also, bugen is wrong. Considering we see Red at 550, and he looks about Setos age.
His teenage voice sucks so bad. Really ruined the character
thats the point where i started to hate him.
So wtf red has split personality disorder huh
nooo he's just a lil guy trying to act all tough
@@daistellae I suppose so, but it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility since those Shinra experiments
Oh and Sora from KH called he wants his voice actor back lol
Our boy was masking while under Shinra territory and only drop it while he’s around his homies. 😭
Red which is his real name Nanaki is a kid of guardian dog age. Woof! He sounds so cute that way.
Red ain’t right in the head
it's weird to see complaints about nanaki, cid and Cait sith voices, these choices were intended from the beginning
Wish they had choices to pick if you wanted him to keep using his adult voice or to use his child voice
Square Enix having intelligent options is like hoping the sun won't die.
Same.. Red has been in my party since the beginning but I think il be switching him out for someone less annoying.
This was also the worse chapter in the game absolutely annoying
His voice sucks now. I don’t care 😂😂
Disliked. This didn't answer the entire title
WTF
😂
The hell? why does his voice keep changing😂
He was pretending to be older, when he technically is still a teenager.
Red Xiii is actually a teenager kid. He tried to act wiser with old man tone in the beginning
I like him more with adult voice. I cant believe him his role too much with this kids voice.
Not sure if i liked his "young" voice... 😅
Not a fan, wish there was a option to make it so he sounds older instead of the annoying teenage voice
This is laughable. What a dreadful game. What a moronic choice.
In the original his dialog changes after Cosmo Canyon. So Square decides let's change the voice too!!!
How the fuk does that make any sense? It sounds like 2 completely different people.
What a stupid creative decision. They made Cid a hillbilly and Cait Sith a Scot. Absolutely stupid.
in defense of the latter: Cait Sith is actually from Celtic/Scottish mythology, so him having a Scottish accent is accurate
OK but they literally characterize Cid's dialogue in the original with a southern accent and southern slang, did you not play the game? Also Cait Sith is from Scottish folklore and had a scottish accent in Advent Children soooo....?
@@Pikaman20008 no, he's Scottish
Cait Sith has that accent since Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus. Cid since Kingdom Hearts. You must be new.
This destroyed my view on this character....
good thing im playing with japanese voices
Why are you here, then?
Actually, it will be the same in Japanese. Red XIII is voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi (Teddie/Kuma from Persona 4) in Japanese, so expect him to get a cheery and a bit annoying voice when you reach Cosmo Canyon xD
That makes no difference. He'll sound the same anyway
Ruined the character for me, never used him again in battle LMAO
