I have a 2103 2-Door Sport S on a 3.5" AEV Dual Sport Lift, 17" Fuel Revolver Wheels and Toyo Open Country R/Ts, and the Tereflex Spare Tire Carrier. The gear ratio from the factory is 3.73. I use it for both offroading with the local jeep club, and also as my daily driver, commuting 50 miles per day to and from work. Its such a joy to drive, that I barely drive my other vehicle (Leased CX-5). My lease on my CX-5 ends soon, so I'll be using the extra funds to install new bumpers and Winch. As for my lifted jeep...I traded in my Prius for it and I have absolutely no regrets. Your jeep looks so fantastic and looks so great with the gray color (Mine is white with black hard top).
I love the modifications you’ve done. Especially the bumpers and lift. I was inspired to purchase the Teraflex 3” lift for my 2017 JK after seeing yours. Sadly, those awesome shocks were out of my price range. I went with the 9550’s instead. I also purchased Mammoth Boulder 17”x9” wheels and 35” K02’s. I’m currently saving for the spare tire system that you’ve got to hang my 35” spare on the back. I really enjoy all the videos you guys do. Especially the ones featuring your Jeep. I’m hoping you make many more. Thanks for the quality entertainment! OIIIIIIIO
You can't go wrong with a 2 door Wrangler. My first "car" that was given to me when i was 14 was a Suzuki Sidekick 2 door.... like a geo tracker... it only had 30k miles and in awesome shape. I beat it on and off road, jumped it etc. Until i blew the top end about 5 years later! Fit on quad trails and never got stuck! Wish i would have kept and fixed it. Hard to find another.
These things aren't that 'bad;' trust me! I work at a Jeep service center and it would blow your mind at how many problems there are with these things. Overheating nonstop! Get something...anything that isn't a Dodge, Jeep, etc
theres so much heat that comes from under the hood that you can feel it seeping out when you exit the vehicle. I think this caused my wipers or fuse block to go bad. My advice would be to get the aev vented hood with snorkle or power dome hood if youre not gonna go with the new model soon Tommy. You did good getting the Manual 2 door though, the auto transmission is finnicky/laggy and I was getting 12mpg in the city. Also, the 4door turn radius is abysmal. 2018 model fixes a lot of the problems as you know- hood latches, vents, better manual transmission, led headlights, crawl ratio, turning, bigger tire clearance from stock, etc.
I've got a 16 with 37k on it....no issues. Daily driver. Doesn't sit in a garage and driven all four seasons...so I don't know what your talking about as far as I'm concerned I'm impressed and very satisfied with my JK. 4th one. 06,11,14,16. Maintenance is key with any vehicle. Not a Chrysler fan but Jeeps I've owned have been better than fine and reliable. I plan to keep this one to about 200k. Sucks that some of you have had bad experiences but most people I run into are happy with theirs. No vehicle is perfect. Take care and wave damn it lol.
JackH Tech49 - Yes, but to be fair, you work in the service center. Your job is basically seeing and dealing with nothing but problems on the vehicles. In the same respect, a Toyota service guy could say the same thing.. they see nothing but the problems. But we wouldn’t necessarily say Toyota’s are bad or unreliable vehicles. If 100,000 Jeeps sell and there are problems with 10,000 of them.. that’s a relatively low percentage of problems but since you see 100% of the 10,000 vehicle issues, of course you’ll have a negative view of them. But what about the 90% of the good ones that you don’t see? You’re not seeing those good Jeeps because they aren’t there. So, although I wouldn’t say Jeeps are “reliable” I wouldn’t be so quick to say they aren’t either. It’s all relative.
Tommy, you've a great job with this Jeep. Tastefully modded on a budget and will be very capable off road in all but the most extreme trails. A great build for those without unlimited funds.
I have a 2017 jku with a rock Krawler 2.5 lift and 35” nittos. Just recently regeared to 4.56 and added trutracs front and rear. It’s worlds better all around when geared properly
Cool video Tommy. You should do some videos on different types of lift kits, winches, bumpers, tires, hitches, etc. The information would certainly help some viewers.
I've got a 2015 JK unlimited with 37" mud terrain tires. I just got the Power Stop Z36 Extreme Truck & Tow Brake Rotor & Pad Kit. I was blown away how much more stopping power they had. I was very skeptical before I put them on. All I can say now is that it's and amazing bang for your buck!
In the the CJ’s and YJ’s the front seat completely lifts forward giving a lot of room to get to the back seat. I don’t knot know why they removed this feature from these newer Wranglers. It would solve entering and leaving the back seat from 2 door issues. Love your set up Tommy. Great decision on your Jeep mods. And also, thanks for your great Jeep videos. I have an ‘09 Rubicon manual 2 door on a 4” Zone lift. I am running stock sized mud terrains and have had no issues keeping up with guys with larger tires. I replaced my bumpers with Mopar front with winch in bumper and AEV rear. I’m very pleased with my Jeep except wish the seat would fold forward rather then slide. My next mod will be 255/80/17 tires. I’m on the east coast but am planning to go to the Jeep Jamboree in Colorado in Sept. It’d be great to meet you guys there.
If you have not corrected the speedometer, the dash MPG would be off a bit. My truck was showing about 23, when actually calculating it was getting ~26
Good info. Well done. We just bought an '07 Wrangler X, not sure what the differences are between the different models. Not a terrible road vehicle, we don't plan on any rock crawling but we will use it for off road exploring. Might do a 2.5" lift. It currently has AEV 17" rims + 32" tires. It came with the factory hard top. We'll definitely do black wheels, maybe 33's and a front bumper.
wow, i remember watching the video when you had just gotten this Jeep. it's come a long way, very tastefully done! i'm a pickup guy and still enjoyed this episode immensely
Thanks Tommy. I really enjoy you and your dad's channel. You seam like people I would enjoy hanging out with. We're a 2 jeep family now. My wife has a 2012 JKUS that we bought new and only has 18K miles on it, and I recently traded my 2011 Dodge Charger R/T Road & Track model for a new 2018 JLUS, so I'm thinking about what modifications to do to each. One video that would be fun would be getting a quality backup camera with an infotainment system installed on your JK. As I'm sure you know the JK's didn't come with a backup camera and in researching it, it seams to be a very expensive upgrade with challenges to get the JK's computer to operate seamlessly with the backup camera and infotainment head unit. Thanks for all you and your dad do!
Love the Jeep Wrangler coverage. I bought my 2015 Wrangler Rubicon Hard Rock after watching you coverage of the same, both the Motor Mountain videos and the comparison with the Raptor.
I like the V6 pentastar. It's the Workhorse of Chrysler. It's the standard engine in Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, Charger, Challenger, Chrysler 300, it's a premier engine in the 200, (which has recently been discontinued). About the only vehicle you're not going to find that engine in will be the Rams which start at the 5.7 L Hemi
I've got a 4 inch suspension lift on my JK. I added the rough country double stabilizer kit on it as well. Helps with those big 35's. I love my JK. For tire carrier I opted for the rough country hinge carrier. Its badass.
If your axle shafts have not snapped yet, then good job. For rock crawling some prefer the automatic, that thing called a torque converter actually works when you need to move slow, like double your power right off idle. You did not (or did I miss it) state that your rig is no longer 50 state legal, and if there is ever an accident, good luck with that. My Dunlop Mud Rovers seemed to wear very fast driven on road, and the noise ... people would ask what is that? ...and they also will dig a hole much faster, maybe your Rocky mud is more "rocky" than what I had in NorCal. Also, the CDI factor (Chicks Dig It).
If you don’t like JEEPS you ain’t American! Tommy she looks awesome, wheels look so much better than stock! Love the rear brake light and bumper/winch combo, a snorkel would look good on it! Also great video!
You should totally calibrate for the larger tires. Might get some of your mileage back. I recently got a new JL and I was getting about 20.5 mpg on stocks. Went to 33s and it went down to 17. Recalibrated and it went back up to about 18.5-19mpg. So the TazerJL I used should pay for itself over time.
I bought a new Jeep Sport S . Had a old boy a day after I bought it tell me, " Be careful with adding after market gizmo's, you'll have as much into it as the Jeep cost and if you trade it in later you'll lose money big time."
Nice. I had the same bumpers on my Jeep. I like how the front ends come up to meet the factory fender flares. Great for a winch plus, all important for Colorado residents, it actually has a spot for your front license plate. I found the LED ring to be very interesting. I like it but if you don't have spoked wheels it won't work. Personally, I prefer the hard top. I put together a simple rig in my garage where I could pull mine off, by myself, in just over 15 minutes. Jeeps are the most fun vehicle out there. The only problem is that they just aren't practical. They are great for a single guy like you. Have a family? They don't work well. Great as a toy/second vehicle. That being said, I dream/can't wait for the day when my very practical F150 is paid off and I can buy another JKU as my second vehicle.
I like you rig and your mods. I have a 2010 JKUR that now has 110,000 mi on it. Its been to Moab 5 times, Ouray 6 times, and as gar south as Sedona and north as far as you can go. From Ky we do about 5,000 mi every fall. 2 1/2’ lift w/34” tires
This video was provided by Rugged Ridge and best top:-) I really do love your setup though, looks great! I love how that JK accepts such large tires without much lift and can't stand when people lift it too high. Very nice set up, love the wheels, and you're presenting is first class. Good job.
Hey man, big fan of your Dad. Glad you’re following in his footsteps. 👍🏼 Do you have an air intake? Get that with the super chips you’ll love the faster transmission shifts. I’ve found performance mods really help in the physics of your vehicle (afe sprint booster is great as well).. but sure you know all this. Learn and live. Have you thought about customizing your Jeep some more?.. the fastback top is great. Make it your own. 😉
Get a pypes catback exhaust. Got one a year ago and best purchase ive made. I lifted and got 35 inch mud tires on my unlimited jk, but that exhaust is so enjoyable. Deffinatley my favorite purchase. Not to loud and has a bad ass idle. Deffinatley look into it, sounds really good in person. Pypes high ground clearance exhaust
I have say this I live in mountains of West Virginia and drive a manual Jk and travel hour half one way to work everyday and knocking down 20-22 mpg I also have 3.73 gears hard top 265 tires ,,,, not interstate all curvy hilly Mt roads! I love my Jk!! Sure will drop close to yours once lifted but,, then I will change rear end gears get back closets to stock can ! If not hair lower!! Love your jeep bud
Great video, I love the mods! I just bought a 07’ Wrangler X two door and I love it. Has a 3” lift and front ram bar installed over the stock bumper, which gives the Jeep a rock hard look. The wheels are 18” and tires are 35’s. The lift has a great balance, where at slow speeds going around town it feels like a proper suv/rock crawler and has the appropriate bumpiness without throwing you everywhere, and then when you get on the highway it’s smooth as butter. So far I’m loving it! Curious, how much does the Falcon Series 3 shocks kit cost? Looks sick, might be looking to upgrade to that. Thanks so much!
I scoff at those calling the Pentastar a mini van engine. It was NOT first used in a mini van, but instead, in the Charger/300. It is a great Jeep engine because it gets 90% of its torque around 1200-1500 rpms, which puts it ahead of the peak torque of the venerable 4.0 inline 6, which Jeep guys fawn over. It then keeps pulling from there, all the way to 6500rpms. It is the best factory Jeep engine to date, period. The 3.8 was the mini van engine. I have one in my 08 JK, and while it serves reliably and adequately, it isn't even close to the Pentastar. The fact the new Pentastar can deliver 23mpg on the highway in a Wrangler makes it all the more impressive. I can't wait to sample the 84:1 crawl ratio in my 18 JL Rubicon with the manual. It should be amazing off road! Thanks for the great video, Tommy!
Nice job. My wife and I just picked up a Sahara unlimited and came across your videos looking for ideas on upgrades. Its her daily driver..now I want my own;)
With the amount of snow they get out there, keeping halogen headlights and adding aux lights was probably a smart move. LEDs don't generate enough heat to melt snow and ice.
Hi Tommy after seen tons of your TFL videos i will go for a Jeep Wrangler sport JK with 6 manual speed engine as yours and will make all the mods you have, thanks a lot for your help and clear up my mind, Kind regards from BARCELONA buddy !!
Excelent review tommy, please make more soon, i really like your reviews, and i dont mean to insult the other staff members of tfl, but i think your reviews and videos are the best because your so informative and straight to the point. Keep up the good work buddy, your doin great!
Very nice rig! I have a 2013 JK Wrangler 2 Door on an AEV 3.5" Lift and 35" Toyo Open Country R/Ts, and it rides amazingly well. I have a 5 Speed Auto and 3.73 gear ratio, and performance has been okay so far, but I have not had a chance to do any rugged trails yet due to my work schedule, so I'm still evaluating if I need to regear to 4.10 or stay with 3.73, but so far, 3.73 seems to be adequate so far.
This video helped me decide if I wanted to go with 35' or 37' inch tire. I'm going to go with 35's. I have a a 2 door jk also and I wasn't sure if 35's would look too small or if 37's would look too big. I've seen pictures of jk with 35's and they look small. I like the look of the 35's here.
Don't even have a jeep and loved the 3rd brake light rather cool. I'm sure they make some but would look into going to LED/brake turn signals so they would all hopefully light up at the same time. :)
Love your channel. But to be clear, all non-Rubicon's have D30 front diff (not D35). Also Rubicon's have 31 spline axle shafts vs the non-Rubicon models having 27 spline. Like you say there's nothing wrong with the D30 unless you run 37"+ tyres and/or wheel really hard. Also worth mentioning that the difference between D30 vs D44 front diff is on the ring and pinion, the rest of the axle housing is identical so both have tiny weak axle tubes (even with a Rubicon you'll bend the axle tubes easily with 35" tyres and moderate wheeling).
Nice jeep. I'm tempted to try that break light. I really like how you covered the strengthening the tailgate. It's rare to see someone do that in my area. I was also glad you went over gear ratios. The only information I believe you have wrong is about JK Rubicon's don't come with a true Dana 44. Only on a Rubicon Recon will you find one on a JK or JKU. Great video, you guys finally earned my subscription.
I'm not really a Jeep guy, I'm a Toyota guy. That being said that is a great looking Wrangler and I would be happy to own it. It looks right, not too high and none of those stupid led light bars. :)
You did a awesome job with your Wrangler. I wish it was more affordable here in Brazil so I could also have one like this yours. However, by now, I am satisfied with my Suzuki Jimny ;)
ring is a little campy but it's better than the 3rd light way up in outer space over that spare. i have the teraflex design that RR ripped off with this hinge kit, which puts the stock 3rd light in the middle and i prefer that. same concept without making your spare look like a jack-o-lantern haha. looks great though!
Sleeve, guesset, and trust ur Dana 30 but it’s not worth upgrading cause you can’t change the fact the ring and pinion gear size is 7 1/4 and is really the weak link if u do up grade ur D30 and the D44 is almost same tubes but different housing with 8 3/4 R&P .......save ur money wheel it til it brakes and just buy the 60s u won’t regret it
Wished jeep offered a v8 motor option. Definitely fun to drive and overall is a fun ownership experience. I've owned a few over the years, the most recent is a 2017 rubicon 2 door 6sp, aev lift/bumpers/wheels, and nitro 35's, warn zeon 10s (per TFL review, thanks guys). Unfortunately, the time has come to let this go and move on. Trading it in on a new sierra denali 6.2 :)
Damn good looking JK, keep the brake light ring too. I bet the new 4cyl turbos will not be effected as much with the bigger tires. I just worry about that turbo and water.
I've never really understood why Jeepers put a huge, spare tire on the back. Why not buy a tire that's the same height but not as wide? This will save some weight, money, and your back as well. I like the LED tire brake light.
I would do that whenever I could. THAT’S why I always put a 33”x9.50” on my 33” equipped Jeeps. HUGE HUGE HUGE weight savings. No 15” wheels? Get 235/85R16. No 16” either? TSL makes some great 17” skinnys that are almost 37” tall that are meant for Dually’s. Yes, they’re not exact matches, but they are HD, off-road capable tires that’ll get you home. Many forget that the commercial truck tire market will accommodate the height needed, but skinny section widths, too. Again - a “spare” tire’s intended purpose is to get you out of trouble, not a fashion statement.
Okie Rider To add a counterpoint to my previous comment, PROPERLY ROTATING a set of 5 tires is reason enough for many when these tires are as expensive as they are. Many people forget the 5 tire rotation methodology of yore (got me an extra 2 years out of a set).
@@LukeEdward yes my stock kms are wearing great and have plenty of tread 46k miles later. 5 tire rotation will definitely give you longer life out of your tires. Planning on going 255/80r17s next. Like pizza cutter look. Mmmmm. Lol
Loved the video, man. I've got my set of BFG KM2 35s sitting in the garage, my 17" Trophys on order and will be picking up my ST3 lift next month. I run 3.73 for my Willys W JKU so hearing your thoughts on the 35s with that gear ratio was helpful. I think I'll be just fine...
Digging the LED ring. I like how visible it is, and without being obnoxious looking. Love your Jeep, Tommy.
I have a 2103 2-Door Sport S on a 3.5" AEV Dual Sport Lift, 17" Fuel Revolver Wheels and Toyo Open Country R/Ts, and the Tereflex Spare Tire Carrier. The gear ratio from the factory is 3.73. I do like the ring. Nice glow/reflection off the rim itself and hopefully not overly bright for drivers behind.
I really like what you've done to the Wrangler. I'm a fan. I'd love to own something similar. I'd proudly drive that bad boy!!!!!

You are probably right (I hate Chrysler in general--crap mechanics), but... there's something about a Jeep. I love my old TJ.

A chip off the old block. Tommy is becoming a great automotive journalist.
His vids are improving, no doubt!

Its crazy how far the wrangler's interior and comforts have come since the YJ.

Yes, I'd add that vehicle computers should not be relied upon for accurate MPG numbers.
Love, love , love that rear LED ring!

Dana 30 front, not 35. I know thats what you meant to say 👍🏻
I really liked the videos with your buddies in your other jeep. I hope you will make something like that for this one.
When I did medal hood latches I went from 14.8 to 15.8 16 roughly so definitely worth it

13 second 0-60... "That's still a respectable time" lol I love my jeep and don't care about 0-60 either!
love what u did to that jeep looks awsome! hope to see more of it.
Thank you for sharing the video I’m barely get me a two door jeep wrangler and I think I found the perfect place for my jeep wrangler thank you very

Good job.
I actually like the ring and was surprised how bright it looks
The ring 3rd brake light.. super cool!
It looks great, Tommy. I’m stoked for you.
I really like it. The use of the K.I.S. method is what I will do with mine when I get it
I scoff at those calling the Pentastar a mini van engine.
Check your ball joints regularly. Those Dana 35 axles will cope but the stock ball joints let go unexpectedly.
Nice job. My wife and I just picked up a Sahara unlimited and came across your videos looking for ideas on upgrades. Its her daily driver..now I want my own;)
Nice review Tommy, I quite like how you've grown into the TLF team so well.
All those mods and you kept the stock headlights?? 😄 That's practically the easiest mod to do and the most helpful!
With the amount of snow they get out there, keeping halogen headlights and adding aux lights was probably a smart move. LEDs don't generate enough heat to melt snow and ice.
Jeep looks great! Hopefully we can see what Matt and Alex have done to their rigs on a new episode of Difflock
Hi Tommy after seen tons of your TFL videos i will go for a Jeep Wrangler sport JK with 6 manual speed engine as yours and will make all the mods you have, thanks a lot for your help and clear up my mind, Kind regards from BARCELONA buddy !!
Very good video, Tommy. Absolutely love that rear LED light ring.
Doing good Tommy, don't mimick your dad too much your own spin-off is great! #BestofLuck!
Love it. A perfect every day jeep for the average joe. The only thing I might add when you get some extra money is a simple lock-right in the rear.
@5:50 ~ I like the LED Brake Light Ring!
Nicy mods Tommy. I think if you ditch those bland factory fenders and replace them with a more aggressive design you'll have one great looking Jeep.
Love that jeep! Wish I could find one that color to match my cummins
By now you've probably done something with this but swap some LEDs into the brake lights. The halogens just react so much slower than LEDs.
I think that ring probably works better than the stock brake lights (as long as you have open rims like yours).
awesome jeep! I have a 01 TJ lifted 3 inches with 33's
Nice Jeep.
Thanks for the report on how common mods are working out in the real world.
Napolean Dynamite soundtrack. Love it. Tires are to slim for me but great JEEP
Don't even have a jeep and loved the 3rd brake light rather cool. I'm sure they make some but would look into going to LED/brake turn signals so they would all hopefully light up at the same time. :)
I look at Tommy and I think, Roman must be alright. The son reflects upon the father.
Really Like your Jeep, you kept it clean with the mods!
I'm not really a Jeep guy, I'm a Toyota guy. That being said that is a great looking Wrangler and I would be happy to own it. It looks right, not too high and none of those stupid led light bars. :)
Bad ass Jeep! I would put a good set of LED tail lights including the third break light.
Enjoy your toy , Tommy and enjoy your youth!🇵🇷
should get those hard a-pillar handles, those are game changers getting in and out
You did a awesome job with your Wrangler.
So, if you haven't corrected your speedo, it's off by about 14%. If you take 16mpg x 14% = 2.24. So your actually getting 18.24 mpg !!
The third brake light ring do look nice!
All that cool and nice looking stuff but no gearing or lockers...
The 2018 rear window switch to velcro instead of the zipper I'm excited
Very Nice! I to am from Colorado and in a 2 door lifted JK. Perhaps see you on the trails some day. Cheers!
That's one good lookin Jeep. You did it right!
Tommy , Time for a DYI episode: "How to change the engine oil on your JK"
Nice ride btw !
Not a big deal, but the spare tire mount is Magnesium not Plastic. The third brake light insert is plastic but that's it. But like I said, no biggie.
Very nice, my Jeep build is coming along nicely but I really want to get my 2010 JKU to look similar to yours.
Those wheels and tires were made for your jeep.looks great
That's a really cool looking jeep man. I'm saving up for a yj. I'm planning on putting a 3.5 inch lift with 33's.
Damn good looking JK, keep the brake light ring too. I bet the new 4cyl turbos will not be effected as much with the bigger tires. I just worry about that turbo and water.
Thank you Tommy! My Sahara 2dr is a stick & wondered how it would do when lifted :)
I've never really understood why Jeepers put a huge, spare tire on the back. Why not buy a tire that's the same height but not as wide? This will save some weight, money, and your back as well. I like the LED tire brake light.
2 reasons:
1: Having a full size spare is a life saver on the trail.
2: It looks cool lol
Many people forget the 5 tire rotation methodology of yore (got me an extra 2 years out of a set).
great tip
Nice Jeep Tommy! Modified but clean. Thumbs up
stick shift the only necessary for me, good vid, well done
How much did it all cost?
more than most have
Oil filter on top of engine block. You have a lifted jeep. Just change your own oil...
Great video. Really enjoyed your feedback on the mods and impact of the lift kit. I want to do most of what you've done to my jkur.
Nice jeep dude! I like the brake ring thing, plus I like it's right in the line of vision for the tail gaiters. I need another jeep.
The LED ring is a great idea
I like all your accessories, nice looking Jeep.
