I always assumed you had to remove the old packing then put in the new, you learn something new every day
Mine is a real pig to reach, have to lay across the engine and can just reach the adjusting nuts with 17mm spanners.
Broke a rib last time i adjusted it so god knows how I will ever repack it
    Very informative vid. Thanks 👍

Well Deck Diaries if the boat had been out of the water I would have removed the old packing first but not with it in the water. Thanks for watching Mark. The joys of the engine being way back.

Good evening, I did this kind of work regularly on big industrial pumps, I had a little trick I was crushing with a hammer a little bit too much, and the seal entered more easily

That gland didn't smile once. You might say, it was a very stern gland. LOL. sorry i couldn't resist.

While I don’t think i would do it in the water as I don’t have your experience, it was handy to watch and get a better understanding of how it works.

We specified a water-lubricated stern gland on our boat and, since installed two years ago, we haven't had a drop of water enter the boat (touch wood). One chap at the boatyeard has had one in his boat over 7 years and, similarlyy, hasn't had the least problem. Seems they are worth the extra cost.

I had re-filled the stern gland greaser just before this job and is shown in the Vlog before this one. Stern gland greaser is fitted to this type of gland and has a screw down handle.
