I have a V-6 crankshaft in the bottom of a Nissan 3.3L VG33E long block, from my 1998 Pathfinder, 166,000 miles. Very clean and owned by an elderly couple since new. Oil pan is off. Block is sitting on its top in a tire giving me access to crank. It is a spare motor. It was having rod and/or main bearing knock. I found shavings in oil and filter. It had been oil starved from previous owner, due to a leak they didn't notice. First I had moonlighting mechanic try to refresh bearings. Nothing changed. I'm not sure he did it well. I had it pulled out and replaced with used motor. I want to restore the crank, flush motor with cheap vegetable oil and then diesel and put it back in. Any suggestions? My first time doing any motor block repair. Thanks!

I don't know if I would on a higher priced part. But I will say the cart was still running as of last year before it was hit by a sub. The rods in the cart engine are aluminum with no rod bearing.

next time you get aluminum on a crank use muriatic acid it will dissolve it

My friend tried the acid don't know what he did wrong but he ended up etching the crank. Too much time in contact with the acid I guess.

There’s no other way than taking ur time and use sand paper or light brush wheel

Is that crank from a kohler motor?

that's hard to believe that oven cleaner got that aluminum off the journal. are you sure that's all you did

i had heard of this being done and wanted to try for myself i prefer emery and a dremel myself much faster this does work and it takes for ever and you have to keep spraying it to keep it wet

shane bell yeah that's how I have been doing it as well but it can make the journal out of round.. I never heard of putting oven cleaner on it. I wish he would have showed more of it in the video.

@@shanebellimpracticaldesign What's the Dremal way? I was thinking about using mine to polish faster but am nervous

You can use muriatic acid mixed at a ratio of 20% to 30% acid powder with 80% to 70% water to clean off spun bearings. But wear gloves and eye protection and don't leave it on too long. It will eat the bearing alloys before the cast or steel.
The engine block makes the best polishing base and or stand. Simply cut your square rope to fit around the crank inside the journals and their cap blocks in place of the bearings then pack them it in with compound and begin snugging them gradually as you-->, Then using an air impact spin the crankshaft to evenly polish one or all lobes if need be.
And you can mic the shafts and compensate for the thousands in offset then order the new bearings re-sized accordingly. Iv'e actually turned several automotive crankshafts using the engine block this way with sandpaper also packed into the mains and adding cutting oil which is oil and water through the oil journals. Sometimes gotta do what you need to do. And them bearings are easily ordered in offset sizes in thousands of an inch.

Unless you used a Dremel as power to drive a belt of emery, I wouldn’t go near a journal with one. Distributing the pressure as evenly as possible is the key.
