Tl;dr: I took this comment too seriously. 😅 At sea-level, the speed of sound is roughly 767 MPH. The fastest top fuel dragster has been 338.48 MPH. They have a long way to go before they even reach that half-way point of 383.5 down the 1000ft that they run down nowadays. If they went back to the traditional 1320ft and switched to turbos, I could see them hitting that mark fairly easily, though I also suppose they'd probably need some new tire technology, too, to go that fast.

Top fuel dragsters need to be able to accelerate as quickly as possible, which means their tires need to be as wide, thick, and sticky as they can get them, which means metal is out of the question (at least for now?). The issue with compounds like rubber is it can only withstand so much heat before it literally starts to melt and/or come apart, and top fuel dragsters, with the speeds they're doing, are approaching the limits of rubber as we know it.

I have been to multiple NHRA events throughout my life. I was at events before they started running 1000 feet and less than 100% Nitro. Probably over 15 events, there is nothing on Earth that compares to a Nitro methane car leaving the line. It will give every organ in your body a wake up call.
I am 64 yo and started going to Detroit Dragway and Milan Dragway in the mid 60s. My first event was in 65 according to dad. I grew up watching Sox and Martin, Big Daddy Don Garlits, the Ramchargers, Gene Snow, Snake and Mongoose, Kenny Bernstein and the like. Pitted for the Rebellious Dodge Hemi super stock. Ran a 72 Duster bracket racing for three seasons. Like you I did my absolute best to never miss a race. Personally I was Always excited about the burnout from a top fuel or funny car. You got the heart thumping, ground shaking but it lasted longer. Especially in the early days of standing near the guard rail. Congratulations on getting to see some of the world's greatest racing. Stay strong brother.

I have been around Don the 🐍 but can't prove it.. People of our culture are few in far between given the age difference, I said it earlier, I'll say it again. Nothing like it on Earth.
100% I have been to so many as a kid. My grandfather did photography for Firebird raceway outside boise. He had alot of friends which was cool for me cause I got to blip the throttle on a funny car in the pits. I have a piston from a blown up nitro engine and it looks like a popcorn kernal it got so destroyed when it blew up. Was flung into the air quite a distance.

If I'm not mistaken, the drivers have to go through a lot of testing to make sure they don't black out when they let that bad boy go. I could be wrong so don't quote me
The launch in a top fuel dragster is the single most violent occurrence on the human body in professional sports. The driver experiences higher g forces than an F18 Hornet pilot getting launched off of an aircraft carrier. Maybe 20 years ago, either Joe Amato or Kenny Bernstein (I forget which once) had to retire because his retinas were separating from his eyes from the decades of drag racing
I watched a video a while ago that said by the time the back tyres get to where the fronts were there already doing 100. With the dragsters anyway it would be less in funny cars

In fact they are almost flat at the start to have maximum grip surface and they expand with gyroscopic forces so they have a bigger radius (so longer transmission ratio) and a smaller contact patch. That why they've got no gearbox

@diabl3917 top fuel dragster uses the same nitro hemi engine that the funny car does. They just get a big advantage in aerodynamics due to their needle like design. Also a fun fact about top fuel is that the 11,000 horsepower is an estimation based off of weight and trap speed because there is no engine dyno strong enough to contain that ammount of force, and the engines are so volatile that they likely wouldn't hold together long enough to get any consistent data
Well at half track the plugs are gone so it basically diesels itself the last half. NHRA cut pit times down so they just change out the short block for a new one now.
They don’t have to, but why take a chance, did you ever see what happens when they let go? I’d run the one that’s inspected, checked, miked and freshened up, if you have extras, use em! They’re only held in with simple hose clamps!

For those who have never been to a Drag Race... it's an absolute MUST. When those Top Fuel cars launch, it's like a jackhammer hitting your chest, amazing feeling.

I've been next to the barricades before at an old school track and when those nitro cars leave and you feel it. Double ears on too because my god are they loud. It's amazing to see that much horsepower blow down the track.
I've worked several T/F events, and they shake the ground. Its your bones they rattle!! Clear vision is impossible. And even with in the ear and over-the-ear protection, A Rob Zombie concert with no protection couldn't ring my ears so many days after!

@@hebisty4163 they are from normal rubber and are not belted for high speed. In fact they are almost flat at the start to have maximum grip surface and they expand with gyroscopic forces so they have a bigger radius (so longer transmission ratio) and a smaller contact patch. That why they've got no gearbox

@diabl3917 top fuel dragster uses the same nitro hemi engine that the funny car does. They just get a big advantage in aerodynamics due to their needle like design.
Also a fun fact about top fuel is that the 11,000 horsepower is an estimation based off of weight and trap speed because there is no engine dyno strong enough to contain that ammount of force, and the engines are so volatile that they likely wouldn't hold together long enough to get any consistent data

Well at half track the plugs are gone so it basically diesels itself the last half. NHRA cut pit times down so they just change out the short block for a new one now.
They don’t have to, but why take a chance, did you ever see what happens when they let go? I’d run the one that’s inspected, checked, miked and freshened up, if you have extras, use em! They’re only held in with simple hose clamps!
Some clutch components survive to run again, others only last one pass.
