How to Get a Great Vibrato on Harmonica (Warning: Contains hairy belly)
(learntheharmonicalessons15)
Vibrato is key on any instrument, giving depth and life to the notes played. The harmonica - with its soulful bends and gutsy attack - lends itself particularly well to this technique. Learntheharmonica.com's Liam Ward teaches you to get the vibrato he uses in his own playing.

I finally advanced enough in my harmonica playing that I needed to find the right way to do vibrato...and this 4 year old lesson is exactly what I needed. So a belated thank you.
You're welcome Smokin Ray.
Wow. I’ve been trying to figure this out for 40+ years. You are the first person to really show how it’s done. Thanks, my friend!
You're welcome, I'm so happy you've got it after 40+ years!
I watched it once again. It was quite helpfull. Thanks once again.
Glad it was helpful! 😎
Thanks - very helpful. So far the best I can do is with diaphragm as you show (hairy belly) and I thought I was doing it all wrong!
Great stuff my friend. 👍👍😆😆
That's deep, bro. You are brave. And wonderful. Thank you for the lesson; it helped. I'm not able to get the vibrato as far down into my body as you; I'll keep trying.
Haha thanks MaryAnn Toboz! Good luck, be patient and you'll get there in the end. I'm still working on mine - there's always something more to learn. Cheers. Liam
best demo ever!!! thanks
You're welcome Leona 😎
2:18 if this wasn't a harmonica lesson, this is hillarious lol
Also thank you soo much on this lesson
Yep, I'm sure you could make a great gif out of that moment!
great! thanks liam again. its all happening here with my vibrato! my halleluia tune has now been added too and I'm getting a stomach workout as well
Great stuff :)
Great lesson. Thanks a lot.
Glad you liked it!
Great job
Very interesting indeed. Thanks for explaining all this. Without realizing it, I have been using several vibrato techniques similar to these, but not nearly as skillfully as you do it.
You're welcome sunjamrblues, glad you enjoyed it :)
Thank u so much Liam! This helps a lot
You're very welcome.
Thank you so much. Very excellent lesson. The best on the tube!!
+Mike Updyke You're welcome, thanks for watching! Liam

Your amazing
Hi Amber,
Thanks, I'm glad you like the lesson. We're all on the same road - keep up the practice!
Liam
great stuff liam.
Thanks Michael, keep blowing!
Liam
Hi can the vibrato be done while using the tongue blocking technique. thanks
Yes, it's the same general idea.
a fine tutorial again Liam, keep them coming mate
Thanks 'Kaizer' - hope you're on the mend!
All the best,
Liam
Hi Liam. I'm a premium subscriber. If I pull hard on the 2 hole to achieve a vibrato I just wind up doing a half step bend.
Hi Robert, it's a delicate balance. Vibrato is a bend, technically, or at least a micro-bend. You have to find that sweet spot where it moves a little but not too much. You'll get it in the end :)
Wow, I've been trying this for some time now and your explanation/example did the trick.
You rock! Thanks man.
Thank YOU Tony for watching :) Cheers. Liam
When getting a vibrato, does the note change pitches by as much as a half step? Is there a difference between a vibrato and a trill on the harmonica?
Hi Sarvam Jagadidam, vibrato tends to be a smaller change of pitch - more like a quarter tone (half of a half step) at most. Usually when we talk about trills on harmonica, we mean alternating two adjacent holes (see my lesson on this: ruclips.net/video/BtQ-9a67nfA/видео.html. Thanks! Liam
@@Learntheharmonica Thank you!
I watched this video just to see the “hairy belly”.. ha ha!! 🤣 So I find that moving my tongue works as my vibrato… is that strange, or do other people use that method too? I’m gonna try your style, cuz I’m sure it’s probably the correct way.
(5:00) The mechanics...
next time we meet buddy need your ear on my vibrato to see if im actually doing it correctly lol ive got 4 altered ways i go between at any given time ???
It's a date!
Great lesson on bellybrato......:)
Haha, can I steal that word for myself? :)
Man you have to have a well developed diaphragm for this
Only way I can get vibrato right now is my tongue.
Dunno if that’s a technique but it sounds ok enough
How does your diaphram go in when breathing in?? I can get my belly moving like that when I exhale but never inhaling.
I try not to over-think it, it's the same stomach muscle movement - trying to control the diaphragm can be distracting as it's a muscle that controls itself rather than taking orders!
@@Learntheharmonica Just to clarify, you are changing the volume of air you are taking in, not the bent pitch of the note right?
How long did it take u develop your particular
Vibrato😬😬😬😬😎
Hey Bobby, I haven't mastered it yet. It's a lifelong journey!
Great lesson
Thanks you
What a body......x
Haha, I'm off to the gym...
LearnTheHarmonica.com still practicing- still sound crap, you still at the gym....
Of course...but shy away from calling it "hairy" bellybrato :)
Mmmm! Yummy!
👏🏻🙌🤜🤛👊😸😊
