I've grown up near animals and loved imitating their sounds well... all that training prepared me for this

You have to be do something more than just repeating. The syllable “ah” because if you only repeat the syllable, regardless how fast, the pitch doesn’t bend at all. Its tremolo.
What I’ve done naturally is hold that syllable, that “ah” and use the throat muscle to pull down the tongue or the floor of the mouth. This is what you do when singing.
So my guess would be along with repeating the syllable “ah” you are also pulling downward on the tongue (basically what you do to get bends) every so slightly to get a fluctuation in pitch.

It's very interesting to see these descriptions after I figured it out myself. I went through all the exact same thought processes and use the exact same noises

Jonah, your explanations and demonstrations are so clear. I'm having trouble with vibrato, or maybe I should say I'm at early stages of developing the technique. Thanks

A tip I learnt that may help learn. is to set your mouth up in a pre bend shape with your tongue, so first bend the note then make sure the note is returned to its normal pitch, but keep your tounge so close to nearly bending. i.es keep your tongue static (or held) in 'almost' the bend position (like very very close to bending but not), So lock your tongue in that position. then when you do the throat vibrato, that inhale it pulls the air over the tongue (thats in the nearly note bending position) and the chugging (a kind of reverse coughing) air you are inhaling is easier to distort by flowing over tongue in that locked near bend position, That distorted pulsating air will then bend the reed. Like it just needed a little nudge
So remember not to pulsate the tongue, and not using the tongue to complete the bend either, instead you are using the pulsating air flow to complete lots of little bends.
Basically relying on the throat 'air pressure changes' to be just enough to pull the note up and down, so the tongue isn't doing the work, but more is holding a 'set position' for that pulsating air intake to distort a pocket of air in the mouth, and the pressure changing is whats causing the reed to go into vibrato.
Sorry I reappeared myself then, but under the circumstances that dons't matter, repetition when learning is good lol

Thanks for your help Jonah. I can do sort of a vibrato with my tongue. Is that very bad? It sounds fairly decent. The throat one is really tough for me, but of course I’ll never give up.

Tongue vibrato is a legit technique. It's just a matter of taste. Tongue vibrato and throat vibrato have different timbres I guess, and each has their charm. Use what you think suits the music best

Hi Jonah, thanks for all the great lessons. I have a question: I do my 'vibrato' by just doing a very quick and small bend, so moving the tongue. Why is that not the right way?

You're wrong, hand vibrato is changing the timbre of the note not the volume.
