my old bass teacher once told me "you want to get better? try the hardest song you know, set that as your goal"
im glad ive discovered vulfpeck
You reminded me of my teacher thanks :)
Then is when you try some victor wooten stuff and you trow your bass out the window😆

It’s one thing to play this tune even remotely close. It’s another to play it, tab it, write the music, and 100% nail every single articulation that makes this song sound as cool as it does. I would argue that reproducing it is more challenging than just playing it the way you play. I’m just blown away...
I am glad more people noticed that! 😃 only tabbing it will take a long time.. With notes!
There is a whole world between 0.75x and normal
for real. I'm trying to play it and i can play it just fine at .75 but normal leaves me in the dust lmao
LMAO FACST
this guy also playing at 0.75. And then the video was sped up. this is understandable, because the guy moves like a fly
@@li.tevezz he is clearly playing at full speed, hes just a great bassist
And I'm gonna be exploring that world.
Everyone coverin Vulfpeck and I can see why. They inspire me to play
epic
They inspire me to sell my bass
Eckhard Binding C’mon Man U got dis
Me too. Joe Dart is the reason I picked up the bass
Joe darts the reason I wanted to try bass and cory was the reason I tried guitar
For any new players out there: even if you think you are not ready, learn this. Learn it slow but with the proper timing. The most important thing is making it groove, even if it's slow. This particular bassline sounds even better slow(ish), imho
Dude has the best technique I've ever seen.
this guy is CLEAN. notice how he always has his thumb on the adjacent string 1 down in the intro part, so precise.
@@dewinmoonl I couldn’t do that AT ALL, my thumb has to be on the pickup
@@jW-kr5xn i know, it's hard for me to do as well haha. this guy's just on a different level
It's just standard high-level technique; come down on the frets from above not from the side, stay in position spanning 4 frets whenever possible, and don't waste motion/energy; the better you are at it the easier playing looks
I would actually say his technique is not the textbook perfect (like mine), but he kicks ass nevertheless (unlike me) :)
God bless you for including those tabs man!
Sound very clean btw
THE BEST AND MOST EFFICIENT COVER OF DEAN TOWN ON RUclips.
NATHAN NAVARRO IS A TRUE BASS MASTER.
I think the only thing isn't correct was he used a Precision Bass xD
There are several covers of this on YT, but very few get the beginning right, those constant 1/16 notes...that's the test of your time. Nate nails it!
This is perfect. Just a video of dude playing this with the tabs scrolling by in real time. All that other shit I normally skip through in other people’s instructional videos is gone. Perfect.
This is the piece that broke my decade long spell of indifference and lack of dedication to practice
I couldn't even play this at 25% when I started
Thanks so much for this great play along tab, it's been meaningful to climb this mountain
It's been too long since I've exercised this part of myself
Keep it up Nate!
Man I’ve never noticed how funky that phrase is at 2:29
No more government subsidies on active basses!!!
I have used this tab a lot, like a lot of your tabs, and I just wanted to say thank you for making it much easier to learn bass on your own!
My BOY did it! Woo! I honestly wasn't sure if you'd cover any Vulpeck but I'm happy to see the cleanest bassist on youtube ripping up the other cleanest bassist on youtube's tracks.
Like everyone else, I stumbled onto this video and loved how perfectly you play the song. Sounded like total perfection to me on a very challenging song. Nice job!
you make this look so easy. truly inspiring
Nate, you’re the man. I plan to play this for my senior recital and I’ve been learning from your tabs. Thank you!
HOW DID IT GO?
@@ZamwiseStudiosdoing the same today and its not looking good. ill update u
Third cover of this song I've watched today, and the second one with tabs, nice
Definitely the best cover of this you can find!
first time i listen this song and is amazing !! way beyond my technique but i can practice learning this, thanks !!!
This is the best cover of this song!
Been waiting for this one!
Great tone 🙏🏼 execution on point, effortless (we know you put in the work) Excellent
super bass player, with super cool techniques .congratulations Nate 🔥👌🤟
wow i know a whole minute of this song!
I thought I mastered this song's bassline but then I realize I played the video on .75x speed.
'Effing awesome, man. So clean - Mr Sheen.
A difficult riff for most. My hat goes off. Perfect
“You think this bass isn’t versatile, you’re not versatile!
Oh sorry! Wrong bassist!
THATS THE ONE
Brilliant . I’m gonna learn this . Thanks a million for this 🤘
Thank you so much Nathan! You're the best!
You nailed it man. Love this Bass line.
Thanks for the video.
I got the first 1/4 of the song down pat. Now just got to learn the rest.
Thanks. I needed that.
Just started learning this song today, great video, cheers. :)
That was so great!!! Thank you ❤
this is literally perfect, there is just one thing misisng, the face of the bassist has not been shown, imagine those crazy expressions while playing!
Wow👏👏👏 great work.
Love that tone
incredible job man, thanks a lot
Ayyyy never been so early to one of your vids! Keep up the great work
Got my hand amputated after trying it. Very cool!!
Just perfection dude
Amazing! You nailed the tone too. Would be great to know the setting you were running with the P+J setup.
hey man this is such a great quality video I have been practicing it for hours now! the little jingle at the beginning, because I have to replay this so many times until I master it...it has become very annoying. Just s piece of feedback from a grateful guest, thanks
That was nuts.
Nice cover bro i want to see more of this epic songs
we needed this
sounds great Nathan , take care , God bless
You make it looks sooooooo easy.... Haha thanks for the Tabs!
Your plucking style is unique
So damn clean, love it!!
Wow, perfect!
dude... you MADE me buy that Genzler 15 array

Nate the best 👍👍👍
I would like so much play my bass guitare like that !!!
So many hours to work.
I’d love to see your personal interpretation of a 1975 song. Great work as always man!
You killed it
heckin clean

You must be joking
Lol you can get there with practice
@@douglashammann1987 took me a few months :D
@@darkomtc same, bro. Lots of fast triplets to get down pat lol
@@douglashammann1987 I learned it in a week, but i needed months to get the speed down :')
And pay attention to note length
Excellent !
You the real mvp 🙌
Soo good bro ❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Awesome. Now I have something to work on...
Nathan I cannot thank you enough for making this. There's another tab video on youtube but the fingering is not as natural as this one for me.
I've just got my bass 2 weeks ago and I'm practicing this nonstop every day. (I played classical guitar for long time before)
I first tried to clap my hands to your playing / tab to get the funky groove down in 0.25 then 0.5 then 0.75 then 1.0 speed
Now I am trying to follow playing along the notes, again, first at 0.25, then 0.5. I'm currently trying to play it at 0.75 speed
the most difficult part for me was the funky rhythm and moving up the fret-board as the spacing on a bass is quite larger than that of a guitar.
I hope soon to able to play this song, maybe I won't have the stamina for the whole thing but definitely the intro until the end of the first breakdown.
When I managed this song I'll upload a video here and link you.
Again I just want to express my gratitude of you making this. It really really helped me out.
I can relate, but after awhile the bass strings are much more comfortable more than a guitar. You'll get it
1:01 I put down my bass
👍 nice as usual
i started playing last year in February and said once I can play this I’ll consider myself “good”. I’m getting closer by the day.
Update. I can rip this now.
Cool
Perfect.
excellent thanks....
SO good
I'll try to learn this piece by piece over the next few weeks, wish me luck
Did you get it?
@@harukomeyers7073 Yes! Learning it was really rewarding and I feel like it helped me improve my technique a lot.
@@inhalerofmoistmeals2931 What aspects specifically? what parts were easier than you expected and what parts were harder?
@@bryanchandler3486 The end but before the last main riff, the fast part with all the fills is by far the hardest part to keep up with. The rest is super doable if you're patient and just take every section of the riff individually to practice it.
Pretty much nailed the tone!
I'd be interested in the setup, and rig!!! Pickup setting? Flats? Pedals?
Great vid!
Playful and sophisticated had a love child and this is its background theme.
Man im only about 40 seconds past the intro so far learning this song 2 days in, Feel like ive learned a whole album and this song is 4 minutes long lmao
Best part is, I dont mind at all.
MAN HAS THE SAME BASS AND EVERYTHING GODAMN
I prefer this tab than the other one you recorded using the mini bass
Sick bro
Howwwww?????? You’re insane
Que hermosa manera de tocar amigo!!
@Nate Navarro Can you or someone else tell me where I can get that spongey-looking finger rest you're using that sits closer to your bridge on your p-bass? I used to always rest my thumb on top of the pickup, but I want a rest closer to the bridge. Thank you!
bravo, bravo!
Hey would you mind explaining what you are doing with the fingering at around 1:10 ? At measure 30 when there's that chromatic ascend? I'm learning this right now and I'm really struggling getting the last note in there before the fourth jump and I saw you doing something I couldn't figure out and that's not exactly what written on the tabs?
That would mean a lot to me thanks!
THATS HUNDRED YEARS OF PRACTICE.
Did my first 100% speed. It was fairly sloppy but overall I am impressed with how well I kept up and how fast I learned this. Time to slow it back down and really lock in the technique!
I've only just managed to get to a point where I don't get lost but it still sounds like garbage at full speed after practicing it for almost a month. I can barely play it properly at 75% which, believe it or not, is quite an improvement for me.
@@duncansmith69 hang on, you'll get there! There's no rushing good music
Hi ! i'd like to know what software/program you use to put the moving tabs in your vids ! Thanks in advance ! Best regards
Thank God for playback speed! My 16ths aren't quite there but I can rock this at 0.75x
I'm a month in trying to play this. I have it all memorized well enough but still stuck at around 75% if I want to keep it clean. I will persevere!
You can do it!
This is where The Amazing Slow Downer app really comes into play. RUclips is too big jumps.. ASD you can do increments of 1%, so can really ramp it up. I'm up to 85% at the moment. Slowly but surely dude :)
How's it going now?
@@ralual getting better. I can play at full speed now but it's hit and miss. I find i have to really focus with this track, warm up first, play through a couple of times, have a ten minute break then come back and I can almost nail it.
Love what you do nathan, you should cover some smyphony x!!!!! 😈
i'm pretty new to bass, and have been avoiding using my pinky while reading tabs. this song has remedied that bad habit lmao
I started out self taught, and a big game changer I learned once I took lessons was to use the rest of the hand to support your ring/pinky when fretting with them. Makes it a lot easier to keep pressure on the string without fatigue.
Interesting that this is not the first time Nathan's uploaded a cover of the same song that juliaplaysgroove just also uploaded, and we get to compare the two different approaches. In this case, Nathan's ample experience as a professional bassist and also his stamina immediately stood out, as Julia really struggled right off the bat with the relentless 16th note intro section, being much younger, with less experience, and a lot less stamina.
Nathan is incredible. I think his channel provides a lot of content for the bass community that Julia’s doesn’t, and he posts a lot more often. But she’s a whole different animal in terms of creativity. Some of her original arrangements are legitimate masterpieces. But everyone has their own tastes and preferences. They’re both outstanding.
@@Cfb8402 Yes, I love both. In another cover they both did, I preferred Julia's version, as Nathan's got a bit too flashy and didn't fit the song.
Great!
Yessss! Perfect Nathan. Would love to see even more Vulfpeck! Disco Ulysses, Skymall or Daddy He Got A Tesla
Also how do you play the fast end part of that main riff so perfectly. I can get it every now and then but my fingers tend to trip over themselevs
Thanks, MJTbreww! For the last part of the main riff I switch from one finger per fret (index on 4) for the last beat of measure 55, to a three fret span at measure 56 with bridging on the ascending 4th in beat 2, then back to one finger per fret (index on 4) at measure 57. Check out 2:08 for a close-up, and slow it down if you like.
Nathan Navarro Thanks for the response Nathan! I’ve got the fretting hand down pat it’s mainly the plucking hand. I don’t have a strict alternating finger “pluck” which begins to crumble, on the third note (4th fret on the D string) I tend to just use my middle finger which often leads to shortening it to one longer note vs two. I guess a fix would be just slow practice?
True wholesome ness
Question: how does the bass sound like that. I can’t seem to get the tone down. I have the same bass (fender presicion although my poor eyesight may have made me misread).
What does Nathan use for his finger ramps? Also the video was incredible good job :)
This song was sick to see live
Very clean! As I can't see your face, I'm not convinced you are not Joey Dart. Is it a cover though if you reproduce the bass line identically?
So dam smooooooooooooth
