i notice for my channel (because i like the camera to focus on my face, but to jump to focus on a tarot card when i hold it up) area focus seems to bug out sometimes... but unless i want the focus to be static in the area of my face, and hold up cards only in that area (though i prefer to hold up cards to my left or right) my options are limited. i'll try +1/-3 custom auto focus settings to see if this helps after updating the firmware. thanks! if you have any tips let me know
You have a terrific channel and I appreciate your candid assessments. The XT 5 is the only camera I have ever returned. I’m a long time Fuji user currently with the X Pro 2 and 3. Had all the previous XT models as well as a few X100's. Have older lenses plus the newer LM 23 and 33. Experience was that with tracking the green box indicated focus but it was wrong about half the time. No difference in shutter speeds or aperture just the focus was at another spot in the frame mostly in the background. Tried various combinations of the AF settings but no luck. Very glad it is working for you.
I love roaming around London with my X-T5 doing street pics. I spend maybe 80% of the time on AF-C and find it accurate enough for my needs. Especially with the zippy linear motors on my Fuji 33mm etc. One of the more obscure settings I like on the X-T5 is 'RECALL CUSTOM 1 SETTING' (which I have set in a top button). It toggles between your current custom group (on the Q menu) and whatever setup you have for custom group C1. It's handy because it allows me to rapidly switch between settings suitable for very different circumstances. Also worth noting is the 'AUTO UPDATE CUSTOM SETTING' option (which you enable or disable in the menu). It determines whether your custom groups (via the Q menu) are locked-in or instead keep varying as you play with them. Handily, regardless of how you set that, the first group that comes before C1 to C7 is always variable and maintains whatever you last did on it. In effect, the first group becomes my everyday, freeform one while groups C1 to C7 are fancy custom recipes that go much further than just having varied film simulations. I also swear by Auto-ISO groups except in tricky light. I still control my exposure by setting my top Exposure Compensation knob to C, which diverts control of it over to the Front Command Dial (which I find easier to reach quickly). The Front Command Dial is then set to toggle (by depressing it) between Exposure Compensation and fine-tuning Shutter Speed. This is really handy and also (when I'm on Auto ISO) allows me to effectively 'lock' the dial by depressing it to switch it to Shutter Speed (preventing me from accidentally brushing it and changing my Exposure Compensation).
Great question, just wanted to ask the same thing ;) Do I hold the BBF Button while I press the Shutter Release button or is ist sufficient to press the BBF to get my focus where I want and then I can release hit and press the Shutter Button stand alone?
Loving the videos mate! Curious to know how your experiences have been on recent firmware updates shooting portraits with fast aperture and only face (not eye) auto detect on and if the shallow depth of fields are catching you out with not focussing on the eye. E.g. 1.4 on your lenses. (Im shooting 1.2 on viltrox lenses and in these instances will need to get the eye every time.
I have an Xh2s coming, have had an XT5 in the past and did very similar set up as you. For shooting sports like soccer, how would you set up the focus? Wide tracking?
Hard to say eh I dunno if the tracking is reliable enough. I feel like it would be on a longer lens for sports. It only seems to not work that well for me when on a wide lens like 35 or wider
interesting that you have the XT5 set to less focus points? 115 or so, you can use the max at 450 and Sony bodies are around 750 phase focus points (these are not the exact numbers by the way, just from memory)
I’m so tempted to purchase a Fuji XT-50 as a fun, family camera so I can see what all the fuss is about but I’m so nervous going from the a7RV with AI autofocus (which I use for weddings), to a focus system that is notorious for focusing on the nose, or eyebrow or background or the wrong person. I’d be photographing my toddler on the Fuji and he’s not staying still 😅 Very interested in hearing more about your transition to Fuji, and if it’s worth it because it does seem like extra work, which can distract from nailing the composition etc. XT-50 or a7CR… still on the fence
Nice to see a fellow Aucklander here! I use the v1 of the 23 1.4 (on XH2 bodies) for the one and only reason that is has a clutch! A very quick and simple way to go from AF to MANUAL in any mode and quickly without having to stop anything in camera. Also, agree totally about eye detect, just not needed for most of the time and the ONE thing too many people rely on as magic that will slow down or confuse focus giving them reasons to complain for something they don’t understand. Also, I use the custom focus setting regularly and always wondered why it never got its own custom button….. Ira…Time to chime in…..?
I'm very very happy that the AF is working for you, for me no matter what I do it's not focusing how I want it to be. I'm going to try and stick it out for another month after a couple weddings. If it's stilla struggle i'll most likely go back to sony.
Recently there has been significant bashing of the Fugi auto focus on RUclips, especially continuous tracking. I've been giving serious thought to either the Xt5 or the XH2s; but so much criticism makes me very reluctant. What are your thoughts on all this criticism?
Unfortunately it’s all been very true for me. I shot a whole holiday with an XT5 and come back home with so many of my photos front focused on shirt buttons and not on eyes, even when the AFC green box confirms focus on the face. Sometimes it’s actually like fighting the AFC as it tries its best to focus on literally anything else but the subject. I do shoot wide open on fast lenses about a third of the time so it’s not doing the AFC any favours, but I bought fast lenses for a reason and I was expecting them to work as well as any other brand’s AFC system in 2024. I don’t care for shooting MF. My 4 yr old bounces around so much I’m not even going to bother. It’s moments I will never get back with my family so it’s been immensely disappointing. The recent update seems to have made it worse so much so that everytime I pick up my xt5 I just know I’ll be disappointed, because I know how good the rest of the camera is but the AFC will let me down. I’m going on another holiday soon, but this time I’m going with a brand that can give me peace of mind.
Thanks for the video. People always say Fuji's video autofocus is bad, but i didn't know it's so bad even on their latest cameras. It looks like my old Panasonic G80 or Sony A7II
Turning off face and eye autofocus, wow. Such a step backwards. I could totally shoot wedding like that, but I really enjoy tracking the subject, focusing on the composition, and being confident the shots will be sharp. We are def spoiled with Sony. Thanks for sharing!
@@matt88169 No. I need to tell the camera what and where the subject is and I need it to track it. A bride walking down the aisle is a great example. On Fuji I find the best AF setting to use is Wide Tracking with the smallest focusing zone. I put the focus zone box on the bride and I need to take a bunch of photos of her as she's walking down the aisle. Recent Fuji cameras with the X-Processor V will sometimes lose the subject and start tracking a guest right next to the subject. I've also had the issue where the focus tracking box will be on the subject and there will be a green box confirming focus, but when I review the photo, the subject is not in focus. My Sony's do this 90% of the time reliably and when they fail I can recognize it and re-track them. Some of us use our cameras for work, and sometimes that work is "You have 2 seconds to take a perfect once in a lifetime picture." Fuji offers features that can't deliver on that front, and we are forced to turn them off. This is why I only use Fuji for personal work.
@@TheSkyenet What body are you rocking? I've only tested it on my X100VI, and can see that it's confirmed focus on something, but something to the side of and behind the subject was in focus. I've only had one short test had a couple of instances where it falsely confirmed focus.

Fiddling around with the AF stick the whole time, just because face detection isn't reliable or sticky enough is very annoying. The camera should ignore faces outside the AF frame or at least prioritise the face within the frame (as with light metering). Going off the rails while tracking? Standard for any Fujifilm camera (had four different). False positive AF results with eye AF is an additional problem, not being influenced by any setting. BBF is a relict from DSLR-times. @@ChrisTurnerPhotographer we shoot weddings full fuji xt5s both for photo and video. as for the latest firmware i notice the af is kinda finicky and not working for us. so we just change into a different style of af which we obviously have options if we just figure it out and make it work for our workflow. its not as good as sony's or canons. but we enjoy using fuji more. showing the clients the shot we get just by the screens of our xt5s is a joy. the small form factor, the vintage look. the feel of holding it. the feel of the shutter and many more.. having a slower pace of AF than the competition is nothing in our opinion. as long as we enjoy using the tool we have is the most important thing when doing this passion and not feeling the work as work. me and my wife binge watch your fuji contents and enjoying it. we appreciate your work man. keep it up :D

Nice video and preset. I have Lr mobile for my Ipad. Can I use your preset as well?
In what kind of file will it be sent?
Hi Chris, on the X-T5, to lock AF, does the AF-ON (BBF) button have to be held down or can it be pressed & released? Thks.

Just makes it easier to change the focus point around, doesn’t charge the performance

The focus definitely isn’t as good as the AI focus on Sony. There’s no getting around that. But it works great for me
