This might've been one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The beginning was good but it just got progressively worse. The acting was good, just the story and "horror" wasn't there for me. Like it became more funny than scary after the first 30ish minutes

Someone has probably already said this, but the pagan thing on the font and the man in the tunnel who starts growing trees out of his face, are the same thing. He’s a pagan symbol of rebirth / renewing. Through that lens, the film is saying she needs to confront all the different elements of the toxic relationship she was trapped in (her not being able to leave the house as a metaphor for that) and the horror of her guilt. The gross rebirth bit is her peeling away all the different aspects of his character until she is just left with him. That’s why, at the end, she’s outside the house - she’s dealt with it and moved on, or is re-born and renewed. Probably.

As late as the 17th century, the word "apple" also functioned as a generic term for all fruit other than berries but including nuts-such as the 14th century Middle English word "appel of paradis", meaning a banana. This use is analogous to the French language use of "pomme".
The origin of the popular identification with a fruit unknown in the Middle East in biblical times is found in confusion between the Latin words mālum (an apple) and mălum (an evil), each of which is normally written malum.

The beginning scene showing him seeing her and her seeing him. It's almost like he's finally seeing her trapped inside. His abusive "love" for her is trapping her and holding her. The men in Colton do this same thing to her. The Green Man chases her back into the home. The boy tells her to "hide", the vicker tells her his death is her fault. All this time she rejects the insinuation of guilt, she wants to get away from it, but the men keep forcing the guilt on her, much like her husband tried to do threatening suicide. Forcing her inside, forcing her to harm them, "look at what you've done to me". As she tries to leave, Goffrey chases her back on the grounds. The many rebirths (which is what the Green Man represents) chase her back inside. Until finally she can confront her trauma and at the end she is no longer in the house. She is sitting outside, finally free from torment and ready to start anew.
In a way I wonder if the "Green Man" form was trying to aid her in a way, to push her to grow, but I'm unsure. Either way I quite enjoyed the film.

    • @tylerdurden5303
      @tylerdurden5303 2 года назад +3

All the men in the village of Colton are an amalgamation of her husband. Hence, the "Russian Doll" effect at the end - until the husband finally "comes out." The wounds on the Men are the same as the wounds on the husband when she finds him at the bottom of the building. The broken right ankle, the impaled left hand... all except for the head wound. When the husband sits on the sofa he doesn't have a head wound. When Harper picks up the hatchet it is implied that she will "bury the hatchet" in order to move on.
On the font, the Green Man and Sheela na gig are both symbols of fertility. Sheela na gig is also a warning against lust. Incidentally, Sheela na gig is of Celtic descent - possibly the reason why Harper had an Irish accent.
However, none of the film makes any sense and the final act is bat-sh!t crazy.

That was one of those movies that i kept thinking "This is fuckin weird, i'm gonna turn it off." Next thing i know the movie was ending, i hadn't blinked for like 15-20 minutes and i was still in the same spot i was in when i had decided i was going to turn it off.😅
It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either, i was more or less telling myself at the beginning of it "they're just robots" and by the end it was more like "That dude has got some issues, i hope she fucks him up.... But maybe don't let her escape?" It's been so long since i watched it that i couldn't explain what happens throughout, i just remember how i felt by the end and it wasn't something i wanted to put back on again but i also don't exactly regret seeing it the first time.🤷‍♂️

I mean, it's well known by everyone that Christmas is not Jesus's birth, lol. It came from Catholics, and then other Christian groups went with it. But yes, a lot of the things Catholics did was to use pagan holidays/etc and incorporate them - a bit reason for that is controlling the narrative. Catholics were all about power, they were the power behind kings. The term "Christian" is too broad, people use the word as if they are all the same, but a Catholic, Jehova's Witness, Mormon, Baptist, etc all use the same word...but have almost nothing in common.

The whole film is a metaphor for toxic and abusive relationships. The scene with the constant “rebirths” is metaphorical for your spouse constantly saying they’re a new person, that they’ve changed, but always end up the same person they was before. Her seeing her spouse at the end was acceptance for moving on.
The visuals of the rippling and echoes is metaphorical for how your voice can carry weight. Her singing in the tunnel causing droplets to fall from the ceiling and crash into the puddle causing ripples. Her voice echoing during moments of impact. She tells her lover that she don’t care if he kills himself to leave her alone. That cause and effect of her words leads to his death.
When she’s in the tunnel it’s metaphorical for seeing light at the end of the tunnel but being held back from it(the man blocking the exit) and running back into a wall(the locked door at the other tunnel entrance). It’s a metaphor for toxic relationships where the spouse feels trapped and their partner won’t let them leave. This is everything I gathered from my viewing.

The idea that Christmas has been chosen because Yule was already celebrated in December is such a stupid myth. Christmas has been celebrated in December since 4th century, 400-500 years earlier than the Germanic people were even converted to Christianity. What happened in Northern Europe like in most other places is that older customs were taken and added to the new Christian holidays. How they chose 25 December is complicated and controversial, they were debating when Jesus was born since the 3rd century... and it's pretty likely that actually they first established when the Annunciation was (middle of March) and then added 9 Months for the birth. Just because Saxons slapped some pagan customs to Christmas doesn't mean it's the same in Southern and Eastern Europe or in Asia... We actually have no idea when Jesus was born.

Imagine releasing a film called "women" that shows nothing but the most toxic behavior of the worst women. When are we going to get to a point where people figure out that it's not okay to make sweeping negative generalizations about men, white people etc? It's just hypocritical. I would never generalize women, black people or whoever in such a way, so why is it okay to do it to me? The concept of punching up is applied in a very flawed manner. Saturnalia originally celebrated on December 17. Eventually the feast was extended to last an entire week, ending on December 23
. This can be found repeatedly on the Internet. In “Saturnalia: The Reason We Celebrate Christmas in December”, columnist Mark Whittington explains his theory, that Christians in the 4th Century assigned December 25th as Christ’s birthday (and hence Christmas) because pagans already observed it as a holiday. His theory was that making Christianization of the population easier because it would force paganism to be sidestepped as a celebration.
However, if Whittington was correct, it is expected to find at least one reference by early Christians to support it. Instead, we find a multitude of quotations from Church Fathers expressing a desire to distance themselves from paganism.
Next is Sol Invictur and Mithras. The feast of Sol Invictus was the attempt by the Roman emperor Aurelian to reform the cult of the Roman sun god and reintroduce it to his people. Problematically, this festival not annual, it also cannot be historically documented as having been established on December 25 by Aurelian.
Some historical evidence suggests that Mithraists believed that Mithras and Sol were of the same god in two different forms, while others claim they are two gods united as one. It’s hard to say for sure because we don’t have a lot of historical info about the Mithraic belief system, but the evidence available explains why skeptics claim the birthday of Mithras was celebrated on December 25.
Another problem for skeptics is the lack of exists suggesting Aurelian was a Mithraist, or that he even had Mithraism in mind when he instituted the feast of Sol Invictus. The connection of Mithra to December 25 has only proven to be coincidental.
Further, the deathblow to the Mithras/Sol Invictus parallels is that the fact that the Chronography of 354 is the earliest mention of any pagan god being celebrated on December 25. The celebration of the birth of Christ by Christians is also mentioned on the same calendar, which diminishes the likelihood that the pagan feast came first.
As for the reason for choosing December 25 - although the exact date of Christ’s birth is not present in the bible, there is documented evidence that December 25 was already of significant to Christians prior to A.D. 354. One example is in the writings of Hyppolytus of Rome, who explains in his Commentary on the book of Daniel (c. A.D. 204) that the Lord’s birth was believed to have occurred on that day:
“For the first advent of our Lord in the flesh, when he was born in Bethlehem, was December 25th, Wednesday, while Augustus was in his forty-second year, but from Adam, five thousand and five hundred years. He suffered in the thirty-third year, March 25th, Friday, the eighteenth year of Tiberius Caesar, while Rufus and Roubellion were Consuls.”
As surprising as it might sound, he explains that Christians believed Jesus was born nine months after the anniversary of Creation. According to his calculations, the world was created on the vernal equinox, March 25, which would mean Jesus was born nine months later, on December 25.
Nineteenth-century liturgical scholar Louis Duchesne explains that “towards the end of the third century the custom of celebrating the birthday of Christ had spread throughout the whole Church, but that it was not observed everywhere on the same day” (Christian Worship, Its Origin and Evolution: a study of the Latin liturgy up to the time of Charlemagne, p. 260). In the West, the birth of Christ was celebrated on December 25, and in the East on January 6.
Given the great aversion on the part of some Christians to anything pagan, the logical conclusion here is that one celebration has nothing to do with the other. In his book, Spirit of the Liturgy, Benedict XVI explains: “The claim used to be made that December 25 developed… as a Christian response to the cult of the unconquered sun…. however, these old theories can no longer be sustained. The decisive factor was the connection of creation and Cross, of creation and Christ’s conception (p. 105-107).”
While these explanations of how December 25 came to be the date of Christmas are all plausible, we know one thing with certainty - evidence that December 25th held a special significance to Christians predates the any proof of a supposed celebration of Sol Invictus or other pagan deities on that day.
That the Christians chose a date so close to the winter solstice is also not proof that this was done to mimic pagan festivals. The various pagan religions all had festivals spanning the calendar. Whatever month the early Christians might have otherwise chosen would still place Christmas near some pagan celebration, and oppositional theorists would still be making the same claims. The solstice was important to everyone for agricultural reasons in the same way water is important to the survival of human beings, and so we see rituals involving water showing up in various religions. That doesn’t prove that one borrowed the idea or theme from another.
As for the movie, it is clearly extremist man-hating propaganda. It is highly artistic propaganda. It is still propaganda.

From what I hear from people who have been in toxic relationship and marraiges is how hard it is to stop it from happening. Sure, you can say that they should just walk away but it is often not that easy. It has a lot to do with psychological maipulation and just power over the abused person that makes it so hard for them.

Absolute BS. If there was a kid in the picture, then you are correct, because you can't just abandon your kids. But the situation the main character was in is something you can absolutely walk away from, as soon as you recognize the abuse.

And honestly, it's attitudes like yours that keep people from talking about their abuse. Maybe that's why you have that stance, because abused people don't talk to you.

@@Leuka_ Nice try, but I know quite a few victims of abusive relationships, some of them even in my own family. Oddly enough, they will confide in you very easily. The advice I gave, and that I saw given when I was a kid, is to fuck off of that relationship. It worked most of the time.
When they didn't leave the relationship, it turned out there were ulterior motives for remaining in the relationship. There is also one family friend that I know is in the relationship due to having a submission fetish. Like I said, the people who remain, tend to want to remain, and it's not something you nor I will ever really understand, because it's a personality trait. It doesn't need to make sense.
You can read about the research on this. A lot of people will remain even after professional help, and it seems to be very difficult to get certain people with certain personality traits out of these situations.
