  • This came somewhat sharp from the factory, unlike most machete type tools that come with almost no edge at all.
I put a new edge on it which is pretty sharp.

I am glad to see someone demonstrating how sharp their edge is without just cutting arm hair! That 200 result is close to razor blades ... my Feather blades are higher end but then they cost more and they are also Japanese.
Getting a blade that long evenly sharp right to the Tanto is not easy!
    Well done.

      Thanks for the comment.
I don't want to mislead anyone with the score though. A score of 200 is about like a hardware store utility razor blade, which is quite sharp. But the double edged shaving razor blades you mention are much sharper. The Gillette Silver Blues that I have tested score about 50 on the BESS tester or "4x as sharp". I've been told that Feathers score more like 37 to 40, but I do not have any to test. Feathers are so sharp that I don't shave with them. But I know people who like them.
So this "sword machete", while very sharp, isn't in the same league as a shaving razor.
      Again, thanks for the comment.

He just scraped that paper without holding the other end and shaved parts of it easily. That thing is sharp indeed.

Good to know you can sharpen it, but it I use it chop undergrowth; fire wood etc will it keep its edge? A real world test would be good.

For me this isn't a machete. Meaning that it's sword shaped and I wouldn't normally reach for it if I needed to cut branches or bushes. But you could if you wanted to. :)
I did a slightly more real world cutting test with that blade here:
      ruclips.net/video/LJL9yowANz0/видео.html
After the slight accident, which you will see in the video, I measured the area of impact and found it was around 285 BESS, which is still really, really sharp. Another Condor machete I have, which I do cut branches with, measures an "unimpressive" 485, which I consider to be quite dull for a knife. But that machete cuts branches and things with no problems. I think the weight and speed of a machete and it's cutting style do a LOT of the work. Even a dull reflective machete edge will still cut small branches.
So, to your point, this video is more just showing off my sword shaped machete. It doesn't have a lot to do with machete tasks or performance.
      Thanks for reading and watching.

What would you use to sharpen something that big ? All i have is a KME system.

I used my Kalamazoo 1SM, which is a 1x42 belt sander.

A short while after I made this, I did a more "interesting" cut test shown in this video: ruclips.net/video/LJL9yowANz0/видео.html
After that test, I found the area of impact with the wood and tested it. I got 285 BESS in that area. In other areas I got 215 BESS. So it lost some sharpness from my cuts. But not much. 285 BESS is still really sharp; sharper than most kitchen knives out of the box.
All that being said, this isn't a high quality sword. It's a machete shaped like a sword made out of slightly better steel than most machetes. I wouldn't expect great edge holding. But I would expect some. As much as I respect guys like jdavis88 for their edge holding tests, I will not be doing any. It's just too much time and effort for me. I'm doing this to have fun. :)
      Thanks for watching.
      Brian.

Great job sharpening and honing, but 1055 is doo-doo pants for swords and machetes. It'll be good for home defense, but nothing else. You'll roll that edge if you use it as a machete. I've ruined every 1055 sword/machete I've ever owned. 1075 with a beefy convex edge is hard to beat.

I honestly think you're better off grinding down a garden machete for a wakizashi. At least you get a wood grip and no hand guard. I mean, I won't be fighting anyone else who's carrying a sword. And they're less than 25 bucks.

Their 1055 is complete garbage. No spring ... basically it's like making a machete out of aluminum foil ... just to save someone a little money. There is no spring ... bends in the manner rebar would ... no rebound. I have a couple blades from cold steel made of 1055. Just cut the shape out of plywood ... it'll work about as well. :)

You need to watch joex youtube channel testing these...
They will bend over 45 degrees and return true, the stuff these cs machete swords can do is incredible
