What I like about your videos is that you are human, you respect your wife and son, you are brutally honest. Great channel. About the human part: I found myself yelling to you, "hey, the file is right next to you! Next to your boot! I laughed at myself while watching you search your pockets for the file. Hahaha. Because we all do the same thing. Please keep your channel going.
i know, but i believe that tramontina use 1045 or 1055 for their machete . and any blade will either chip or roll the edge on a rock test tramontina yourself, put a decent edge on one and go beat the sh*t of it. for the price you can't go wrong, SPECIALLY the camp knife with the 12 inch blade. personally i prefer to add some hockey stick on the handle for better grip, but it maybe because i am Canadian ho you can also try cold steel, a little bit more expensive but still affordable and the kraton handle will stick to your hand and is decently comfortable.
I'm from Brazil, and people here think Tramontina's machetes are too flexible, so they kinda "sing" if you don't hit with good edge alignment. The preferred brands here are Matão and Collins (the old ones, with wooden handles). But I think Matão only supplies locally, which are sturdier. I personally like tramontinas because they come with a good grind. I have one Matão and I had to put a bevel in it myself. Plus, Tramontinas are very cheap. Anyway, whatever you do, just DON'T buy a machete with a plastic handle. Wood handle or nothing.
It’s an “honest” tool that works with you. You’re not fighting weird ergonomics or poor weight balance. The best tools, are those that feel great in the hand, and get the job done without compromise. Keep doing what you do!
Man for this series of cheapest stuff you all need to start a "Where's my price went up crew?" - then people could just like your comment cause there's always 20 people making different comments about the price has changed. It's Amazon, the prices change all the time. They are like an airline and adjust their prices on the daily, sometimes several times a day!
Whatever. It is NOT an "attack" against Wranglstar, genius, but rather a simple observation that as soon as his video appeared in my alerts, the various sellers on Amazon jacked up the price by approx. 80%. It's not his fault; what we're seeing is market forces in action-- supply and demand......
I might have pick one of these up after finding out it's from cold steel. I bought their Bowie style machete on a whim last year and figured it would be kinda gimmicky but after putting an edge on it I use it constantly for things like splitting lighter pine, hacking animal bones off when I skin something, or trimming limbs around the house. It was like $19 and I don't think you can possibly break the darn thing under any normal use. Ended up ordering 2 more incase they ever stop making them again like they did a few years ago.
That's the thing with Cold Steel. Every once in a while you get a really well made item for a good price. Other times, you get an item that shows no quality control what so ever. It's just hard to know what to expect when you order something from them.
You're thinking of 15 years ago. They've really amped up the quality control and materials. They still have some low priced stuff, but they also have a large percentage of really great blades made with steels like 52100, CTS-XHP and BD1, CPM-3V, and CPM-S35VN, not to mention some really excellent DSC Damascus. The days of hit or miss AUS-8 and VG-1 are pretty much gone. If you manage to break an SRK made with CPM-3V, chances are you were trying to drive railroad spikes or you picked a fight with Hephaestus, Greek God of blacksmithing and metallurgy.
I have several knifes from them, no quality issues as of yet. Only complaint is the tolerances on my folding pocket knife are so close that the lock gets jammed with pocket lint, but it's nothing a little water or a toothpick can't fix.
Just picked one up on Amazon for $22. Gotta say it looks good from the handle to the head. Good grain orientation. Stupid shellac but looking forward to using it after some refurbishing. …Just came back from camping with my brothers. We beat the heck out of the Trail Boss and it kept on ticking! The handle is a bit large for the head but overall it rocks! It’s a beast and I’m looking forward to tricking it out!
Just ran across this video (4/9/2020). The memory this brought back was helping my grandfather sharpen his axe on whetstone (wetstone?) wheel as I turned the wheel and he ran the axe back & forth to sharpen it. Man. That memory has to be nearly 70 years old, yet the colors & sounds are as clear today as they were then. Thank you
This video answered a question I had that I was going to ask about servicing your tools while in the field. Using just a file and that cool little sharpening stone which would be light enough to pack you were able to put a decent edge on that axe. I am for sure going to for sure purchase that file and stone. I would assume you could do the same for a knife as well if you needed to. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in these videos.
You should contact Alec Steele and see if he would be interested in forging and axe head or even and axe for you to review. A Damascus axe would be cool from you to use.
Love your channel! Great information. I live in Oregon and have learned so much watching you. Also, I purchased this axe when it came back in stock for 23 bucks and I have to say. Everything you mentioned is 100% right. Sturdy and well crafted. I did re edge it like you did and took the varnish off the handle to change it to just some boiled linseed which I like the feel of much better! Thanks for all the info you are the best!
Not an axe junkie, but I do know that quality has a price. I never would have considered buying a $20 axe, because I wouldn't expect decent quality for such a low price. thanks Cody for showing us an axe video for the budget minded woodsman. Keep up the good work. take care, and God bless...
It's a freakin axe, it's not rocket science. People been making them for thousands of years. No reason for it to be expensive using modern manufacturing methods.
I bought this axe as my first axe on Cody's recommendation and fell in love with it. It sharpens by hand great very serviceable in the field, cuts way beyond what I expected, and when sanded and applied with boil Lin seed oil the handle becomes exceptional. If you want a perfect beginner axe or are thinking about buying it do it. This axe is worth more than its asking price. At the time of purchase mine was $35 on amazon for frame of reference.
I'm just an east coast guy but after watching your videos I've been getting into homesteading stuff. I have a few acres of family land and I really count on your vids for tips to do tasks around our land.
I bought the Trail Boss axe after watching this something like 5 years ago… been swinging it ever since - split wood with it today in fact which brought me back here. I don’t have anywhere near the Gransfors Bruk collection you do, but the mistakes/skills I learned swinging and caring for the Cold Steel have allowed me take better care of my properly nice axes. And with quality in mind, I take care of all my handles and store the axes in the same place through the winter and the Trail Boss is still rock solid whereas I’ve had 2 high end axes get loose. In all, I think this is one of your best recommendations from a shear value standpoint - even at todays price of $29
When people told me "you can listen to anything if the person talking is enthusiastic about the subject" I guess they weren't lying.

I have the same ax and feel the same way. It has held up to my abuse and bad swings, has been put out in the rain and been used in the snow and through all of it, it has done nothing but its job, can't help but agree with everything you've said
what make is the axe?
I want to see your whole axe collection! How do you store them?
great review

What I like about your videos is that you are human, you respect your wife and son, you are brutally honest. Great channel.
About the human part: I found myself yelling to you, "hey, the file is right next to you! Next to your boot!
I laughed at myself while watching you search your pockets for the file. Hahaha. Because we all do the same thing.
Please keep your channel going.
Would you ever do a review of the Harbor Freight axes?
I just bought a 6 lb maul there for $16, works great so far.
can you do the cheapest machete?
easy, Tramontina, cheap, real carbon steel, they don't have any edge but after you put a decent edge on it you got a true work horse
deathangellink with a machete you can't have too hard of a carbon steel. If you hit a rock or a knot you will chip your edge.
i know, but i believe that tramontina use 1045 or 1055 for their machete . and any blade will either chip or roll the edge on a rock
test tramontina yourself, put a decent edge on one and go beat the sh*t of it. for the price you can't go wrong, SPECIALLY the camp knife with the 12 inch blade. personally i prefer to add some hockey stick on the handle for better grip, but it maybe because i am Canadian
ho you can also try cold steel, a little bit more expensive but still affordable and the kraton handle will stick to your hand and is decently comfortable.
Wood handle or nothing.
i agree, wood or nothing, and yes there is better than tramontina, but for the price ?
This man, you may think he misses a spot on a tree he was aiming for, but every swing is meticulously aimed, almost as if he never misses

It’s an “honest” tool that works with you. You’re not fighting weird ergonomics or poor weight balance. The best tools, are those that feel great in the hand, and get the job done without compromise. Keep doing what you do!
I appreciated this genuine review of an inexpensive axe from someone who presumably has a lot of experience using axes.
Amazon shows $33, not $21. Did they hurry and bump the price after seeing your glowing review?
Steve
I got it last night for around $21....
I'm a Prime member, and as of 5:03 PM EST, the cheapest price on Amazon is $34.
Exactly
Ended up ordering 2 more incase they ever stop making them again like they did a few years ago.

the sounds right before he started trying to sharpen it, were so serene and calming
When he realizes it has two round wedges tension mounting the head to the handle is when he just absolutely fell in love with it lol

I don't. All you have to do is use something and look at the steel...
it's always good to have a nice "beater" tool
They should use him on their advertisement for this axe. That was some high praise. 😂
"I like owning it, I like looking at it, I like swinging it. i like... I like everything about it.." Hm. Sounds familiar.
Thank you
10:05 when he spits on the wetstone me feel like porno
Lol I wish
This axe is now listed at $72 on Amazon!
And now it is $76 haha
Just bought it for $23 on sale from $48. Just keep an eye out for the price drop.
@@alanj7306 $22 now!

No reason for it to be expensive using modern manufacturing methods.
who the hell compensates for small body parts by paying for an expensive axe????? Americans are really dumb.
now for $80 on the Canadian market... no stone, no sheath... just the axe
I love you're passion for steal and survivor elements and everything else you do keep it up man :D
Still recommend 1 year later?

Yes very low expectations
You should do a series of going back over these product with their new price points and evaluate the consistency of their manufacturing over the years

Gary Ning Dude Wranglestar made a video to support his channel. Also, HELLO I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL MARK! AWESOME!
i have 2 of them and love them.......both sharpened really well......i also hate the thick varnish as well. I use them as camp axes.
I usuallu take blade coatings off. I use Klean-Strip KS3. Good stuff, but wear heavy rubber gloves.
they would rust going across the ocean because of the salt most likely. I got this from a guy in the comments.
Please more content about tools, axes and forestry!! This content is pure gold! Thanks Mr. Wranglestar

I own this axe as well as several other cold steel items. I am always impressed with their quality and value of their products..
They have them at Harbor Freight. I played around with one and completely agree with you. They feel nice and sturdy.
Alt-Knight how much are they at harbor freight
407ForRent About the same. Like 20 or 30 bucks. Probably even less w/coupons.
Alt-Knight I can't find it on there website
idk why. It may be an in store only item.
