It's not dementia, it's Narcissist Personality Disorder. I used to date a guy who I suspected suffered from NPD, and his knowledge of history and real and fictitious personalities was seriously weird. He was educated and intelligent on the whole, but he didn't know the 1920's were a time period in the past. He just couldn't grasp this simple concept. His world was so centered around himself that he wasn't capable of forgetting himself completely for a while and imagining a long timeline of history where he played zero role.
I have zero trouble thinking Donnie believes Hannibal is a real person, and wants him 'on his team'.

As I listen to the disheartening news about the latest troubles in Israel, my mind inevitably wanders to Jimmy Carter. He's in hospice care, so I don't know how much news (much less troubling news) is shared with him. If he knows about this latest war, he surely must be extremely discouraged and disheartened -- with hopes dashed that he would leave this world knowing that the Mideast was at least a little bit more settled as a result of his efforts decades ago.
Sadly, I don't think any of us is getting off this planet with peace in the middle east. Not while right wing leadership on every side finds eternal enemies far more convenient to placate their citizens than actual good governance.
