Hyundai Ioniq 6 AWD - More power. More desirable?

  • Hyundai's Ioniq 6 was always going to be their difficult second album after the sensational Ioniq 5, but the signs were good. Our initial Sneak Peek of the car told us what we needed to know about the design and technology, and our first road test of the car told us how good it was to drive. But Bryan didn't declare it a class leader, and since then we've seen the Polestar 2 get its major update, the Tesla Model 3 has had a midlife facelift, and of course, we have now seen the new VW ID.7. So is it the more powerful, dual motor Ioniq 6 that is the hidden gem of the range? We subject it to the only roadtest that actual car buyers trust to deliver the definitive verdict when choosing their next electric vehicle - the AutoEV one.
    AutoEV - all electric, all independent.

    I have an Ioniq 6, with camera wing mirrors, bought it July last year, I am still getting admiring glances and comments nearly everywhere I park. This car, for me, ticks all the boxes, love the digital mirrors and everything else. I’ve been driving 64 years, all sorts of vehicles, this to me is the ultimate and I love it.

    I'm about 3 weeks into owning a 6 first edition. Mine is white so I have color matched car in the 360 video. It does bleep a lot. Reversing is awkward and rear vision not great especially at night. No rear wiper is part of that.
    All that said. It's a v quick by most standards and packed full of witchcraft type features. I love getting in the car and love driving it. Winter is coming and I love being able to heat the cabin the seats and the steering wheel by using the app.

    • @jeb-zf4un

      @bafattvahetere it needs one really. I'm trying a clear hydrophobic wax to improve water shedding. It's not a biggy as I drive a van quite a bit so rear view is less important

    Well it looks a bit better in Silver but just can’t get used to the ‘Droopy’ bottom. Each to their own but couldn’t live with that!

    Very few reviews of the ioniq6 mention 'Snow' driving mode activated by pressing the drive Mode button for a couple of seconds. Blind spot indicator is fitted on the mirror Ultimate models too. Don't fancy those digital 'wing' cameras! Look forward to my delivery in a couple of months.

    Marmite design, could be both a pro and a con. Solid 0-60 and good build quality. If you want something different then I can see some buying this, but tough competition.

    I have an AWD Prefered version (in Canada)without the sunroof or the camera mirrors and different design 18in aero wheels. The stated range is 509Km, easily exceeded in 20 to 25 degreesC weather. I have seen up to 580Km of range in those temps, down to 400Km range in -15 weather ( and on winter tires). The 4wd is really at its best on snowy or icy roads, especially in SNOW mode, it balance the power equally between the 2 motors, the traction software is pure magic in those conditions. A must have here in Quebec with our kind of winters! Cheers

    2 days ago i had a test drive with the Ioniq 6 RWD Impression, love the car. If there wasn't a Hyundai badge I would think this is a very high class brand. The looks of the car are in my opinion seriusy great. Everyone looks at the car when you drive around 😂.
    Great rewiew 👍

    I'm sure you know by now that the Bings and Bongs are EU legal requirements so they don't have a choice. Every new car will have them as far as I know.
    We'll get ours in the beginning of 2024, can't wait!

    Hyundai seemed to have struggled bringing the Prologue concept to market. Some of the detailing is clumsy and detracts from the original’s beauty. But a bold statement, and hurrah, it’s not an SUV.

    Camera mirrors on HGVs cut down a huge amount of drag and possibility of accidental damage by their smaller size, but I can't see what purpose they serve on a car where they protrude virtually the same as mirror and have all the disadvantages you mention.

    Unless there’s some new magic in there, it should top out at about 240KW when DC fast charging like other E-GMP architecture cars. At EA (2 years ‘free’ w/ car in US) the 18 minute 10-80 charge time requires a 350KW charger because their alternative is 150KW. (Which is where the confusion might come from)
    Still it has an amazing charging curve and holds to a high rate deep into the pack.

    Is it a UK thing those bings&bongs not staying off? I have a US spec GV-60 and easily tamed mine back to just speed/red-light cameras (by choice) for audible, and the speed in the HUD turning red when I’m more than 10mph over the limit. She’s a quiet girl and not as naggy as yours is being. (Not counting back up beeping which I think is regulatory )

      This is trying to be a saloon. Look at an Ionic 5, EV6, or GV-60 if you want the features from the E-GMP architecture in a hatchback configuration.

    Each to their own. I tried the Polestar before buying my Ionic 6. The Polestar felt much smaller especially in the back and having a transmission tunnel doesn’t help. Also the Polestar is considerably more expensive on a PCP and as I wouldn’t dare buy an EV outright due to the rate of technology change that is a significant factor. You can buy an Ionic 6 top spec for £51k or less (I did, with an installed home charger thrown in). Not the £55k quoted. Styling that’s personal preference, I found the Polestar very bland, Tesla 3 downright ugly, BMW i4 is useless in the back and wildly overpriced. The only styling bit I find awkward on the 6 is the rear bumper level which is fussy. Build quality & paintwork on the 6 is excellent way ahead of BMW & Mercedes.

    • @bafattvahetere
      @bafattvahetere 7 месяцев назад

      Build quality is excellent. The interior material (leather?) could have better quality, tho. "You get what you pay for". MB and BMW, not much.

    I have a Polestar 2 AWD. I'm jealous of the Hyundai 6's 800V charging, I'm jealous of the Tesla Model 3's charging network. For everything else, I feel like I have the pick of the litter.

    Forgot the mention that this car could been a lovely cruiser with a calming quiet driving experience but it’s unfortunately ruined by the constant irritating totally unnecessary high pitched beeps and bongs, warnings & take a break alerts etc…that either can’t be turned off or you have to switch off via slow/glitchy infotainment system. The heater for some reason defaults to a level 8 which will blow you out of your seat??? Also storage is particularly useless totally impractical especially for anyone with a family.

    Be better if they use LFP battery instead of lithium Ion, than you could charge to 100%, and the battery would be cobalt free.

    • @jeb-zf4un
      @jeb-zf4un 9 месяцев назад +1

      Wow i didn't realise that it's not lifepo4. It surprises me that li+ is still allowed in cars given its propensity to burn like the fires of he'll. I guess lifepo4 is more expensive?

    • @CampGareth
      @CampGareth 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@jeb-zf4un Less energy dense, less power dense. This car could be built with an LFP battery but I imagine they'd have to reduce the battery capacity or increase the weight then reduce the power output and charging speed which is one of this platform's selling points.

    • @CryptoDave

      Looks are subjective, I personally think it's far worse to look at than the polestar and worse than the model 3. Warranty and vehicle to load are good, but performance, efficiency, charging network, practicality, driver aids and software are all worse than the model 3. I think in a couple of years the sales figures will bear this out. I admire them for going for something out of left field, but it misses for me in a way the Hyundai 5 when it came out didn't. I think when the highland comes out (apart from the ridiculous lack of indicator stalks) it'll be completely outclassed.@@AutoEV
