The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Isn't A "Tesla Fighter"... It's Better...

  • Some of you might think that making a solid EV sedan in the 21st century is the textbook definition of "great landing, wrong airport," but for anyone interested in high efficiency, low emissions driving, the Ioniq 6 might just be the ultimate EV. With over 300 miles of range, swift 0-60 times and wicked fast charging, the only real issue with the Ioniq is... It's unclear how the NACS transition will impact living with the Hyundai until Tesla rolls out more V4 Supercharger stations...

Also that fact that it has solid range and quick charging at and affordable price is great. Midsize ICE/hybrid sedans can cost 40K these days.
Edit: if you lease an Ioniq 7500 tax credit makes it on par with other sedans. Also Hyundai is offer 239/month 0 down lease nationwide till April 1st on base SE RWD model. Great deal

You mean props to Tesla because Hyundai just copied the Model 3 a few years after when they realized how successful it was. Just a shame it has to look so ugly because I'm a fan of the Ioniq5.

And consumers rejected this like they do all sedans. Ioniq 6 global shipments in Jan/Feb is -90% year on year. Ioniq 6 resale is like $10k lower than a similar Ioniq 5. It's clear most consumers globally would rather have hatchbacks and crossovers.

They barely manage to sell 500-1,000 of these every month. At this rate, it will become unprofitable to sell in the US, which means it probably won't make it past 2026. The legroom is fine, but for the class and price range it's in, the cargo space lacks. And it's a Hyundai, which doesn't help.

Picked up a ‘24 SEL AWD last month. What a great daily driver!
Yes, no tax incentive, but Hyundai is lopping $7,500 off the cost to remain competitive because of that. I was going to get a hybrid vehicle, but the cost for the Ioniq 6 got so close, I chose EV, instead. I was going to grab a ‘23, as they had even more incentives, but there was a stop sale due to a recall. Because of that, the dealer gave me even more off on a ‘24. My car’s MSRP was $50K and I got it for $39K.
Lots of car for that amount of money! It has so many great qualities, as Alex covered excellently, of course.

Structural laminate glass has a higher tensile strength than a steel roof. For the energy absorption portion of the ends and sides of the car to work properly the main safety box needs to deform as minimally as possible so the energy can be directed into the deformable segments. You could put a metal rail system on top but that would add 200 pounds more than a glass canopy. Maybe see through aluminum someday, but for now glass works better.

@@stanwbaker Ultimately it's your choice as a consumer. If you don't like those glass roofs don't buy one. I was just pointing out the reasoning why auto makers are using it - because it's both cheaper and stronger than a conventional steel roof. It also offers more headroom than a steel roof.... until you put a sliding shade underneath it. The reason you have less headroom is the tendency for automakers to make these coupe CUVs that luxury marks like MB and BMW started doing about 6 years ago and now everybody wants to make something that is high off the ground and yet has a low roofline - basically you have to ride like a low rider. I drive a Model X and a Honda Odyssey minivan - I don't care how I appear to others I only care about safety and function.

Anyway, my personal experience-- I just got an Ioniq 5 (Limited, AWD) in late January. Very happy with it, but I seriously considered the 6-- LOVE the styling and the extra bit of range. Ultimately, I went with the 5 because I wanted a hatch and preferred the 5's more open interior and massive sunroof (but with a shade). Also, there was an extra $2.5K in rebates on the hood on the 5 ($10K total) for being a Chevy Bolt owner, which was not available on the 6. Still, my neighbor around the corner bought a 6, and yeah, I'm a tiny bit jealous (though his is RWD, so not really).

Also, thanks so much for pointing out the Kona. I am confused as well as to why they didn't slap that 800v battery in it. My only thought is the supplier for the current battery either gave them a super deal, or they had a ton of them in inventory. But man, the size of the Kona and the Niro are just perfect. Hey Alex, your issue with the bad charging recommendation is due to a bad design choice they made.
The nav determines the max charging on a trip to what you choose as the max charging in the charging menu.
So if you lower the DC charging to 80% or less in the other menu, you get much better recommendations.
But then when you get to a stop which goes a bit longer than you expect and the car stops charging at 80% when you could have had more... That just sucks.

8:18 when you talk about efficiency, can you throw a mi/kWh number on the screen, or whatever the industry-standard measurement of efficiency is? Obviously this depends on tons of factors like speed, terrain, weather, and driving style, but an expected real-world number or whatever energy consumption you saw on your standard EV test route is would put the energy efficiency number into perspective. Once we have sufficient charging infrastructure in place for road trips, the number that will matter more is energy efficiency, not range. Just like we measure ICE vehicles not by the size of their gas tank, but by their mpg fuel economy.
Edit: just realized you threw in fuel economy at 26:22. Would have been nice to have this number on screen at the same time as listing the battery range at 8:18.

    1. Aside from it being ugly (it looks like it has a humpback), its UI is not nearly as advanced as Tesla's. For example, the car recognizes when it is me driving, and it automatically saves my driver's seat to the position that I set it. If a friend borrows the car and changes the settings, when I get back in the car, it will automatically return the driver's side seat to my settings without me touching one button. Another example, my Model 3 automatically connects to my phone if I have been using my phone to listen to music, and it connects wirelessly to that music source automatically when I get in the car. Some of the Hyundai EVs still require a USB cable to connect the phone to the car, which is just inexcusable. A third example. When I walk up to the car with my phone it automatically unlocks and "starts." There is no on/off button. The moment I sit down, the car is ready to go. When I walk away from the car it automatically rolls up all windows and locks without a key fob - I don't have to touch a thing. The headlights automatically dim, It has three versions of cruise control, including Full Self Driving, where the car dives itself and it has automatic parking. It also has "Sentry Mode" and alarm that videos any person trying to damage your car and sounds a loud alarm if they try to break in - it does this automatically without me setting it. It has seven cameras, including side blind spot cameras. It has automatic dimming mirrors - ALL mirrors dim bright headlights from behind. It has radar sensors that tell you how close you are to an obstacle in inches. The seats are durable and comfortable. The ride is firm, but still comfortable. If you pay $99.00 per year, the Model 3 will get a cellular connection to your Model 3 that allows you to browse the internet, watch streaming TV, RUclips and more. The rear seat room and cargo storage room are great.
Really, I have not seen any other car that is even close to Tesla as a whole package. Use of the Tesla supercharging network alone makes it superior to every other EV car out there as far as practicality. I have heard that the BMW and Cadillac EVs offer better ride quality and similar sophistication, but they cost twice as much and reviews state they have bugs. Reliability is also an issue with BMW and Cadillac cars in general - especially BMW.
    2. I own a Tesla Model 3 RWD and it has a smaller battery (63.3 KW). It will go from 10% to 80% in about the same charge time on a Tesla supercharger. So you're just flat-out wrong. It will also go from 10% - 100% in less than 40 minutes. It charges at 170 KW, but because it has a smaller battery, it takes less time to charge.
    3. If I drive it near the speed limit, it will get somewhere around 250 miles. Normally, I don't drive that slow, so I get around 225 miles of range. My Tesla Model 3 is a 2022. The 2024 Model 3 is more efficient and has more range than my 2022. So, I am guessing that the 2024 Model 3 will get very similar range to this car.
    4. My lowly RWD base Model 3 will accelerate from 0 - 60 mph in 5.3 seconds to 5.8 seconds, depending on which review you read. Regardless, it is faster than just about anything on the road.
    5. Right now, the Ionic 6 is priced higher than the Tesla Model 3 Performance version, and the Performance Model 3 will absolutely destroy this car as far as speed and handling.
    6. There is no federal rebate for $7,500 for Hyundai EVs. Most Teslas do qualify for the rebate (some don't).
    7. Tesla LFP (:lithium iron phosphate) batteries are getting a reputation as the best EV battery available right now. They are capable of lasting over 5-years and maintaining over 90% of their capacity. You also can charge them to 100% without hurting their longevity. There are several RUclips videos of RWD Model 3 cars with 200,000 - 300,000 miles that still have 90% of their original battery capacity. So it would appear that the Model 3, after going through a rash of build quality issues over the last few years, is becoming one of the most reliable EVs being sold right now.
These are just a few of the reasons why Teslas are better than almost any EV on the market. They also are more cost competitive than most EVs. My neighbor just bought a 2024 Model Y RWD for $ 41,800 out the door. That includes all tax license, registration, dealer fees, etc.
The Ionic 6 is a good car. It has been highly ranked in reviews; often it has been ranked as #1. That being said, I just don't see how it is superior to the Model 3 and Model Y cars. The 2024 Model 3 has been upgraded for 2024 with better suspension and it is more quiet on the road. So it now competes with the Ionic 6 in those important categories.
The fit and finish of the Model 3 and Model Y cars is not as good as BMW and Cadillac, but then, they cost about half as much. And every year Tesla is improving the quality of its new cars.
Add to this that Tesla regularly updates the older Tesla cars with the newest features via software updates and you have an unbeatable package that no other car manufacturer can match. That is why the Tesla Model Y is the best selling car in the world right now.
