Never caulk ALL the way around the base of your toilet (if you do decide to caulk). Always leave the very back side of the toilet base NOT caulked so that if there's a leak where the wax ring or rubber fitting are supposed to be sealing your toilet to the flange, the leaking water has a place to come out and you'll be alerted to the fact that there's a leak.

Came to comments just for this. Never caulk all the way around a toilet. I have unfortunately pulled toilets that had been caulked in that had been leaking for a long time without any signs till you pull the toilet. It's a very gross science experiment!

May be it's best to not remove the toilet. I prefer to just install around it.

Just a note on cabinets... in my 35+ years home improving I have never attached cabinets to the floor except as an island or peninsula, or a side panel (often needed for a dishwasher). Cabinets attach to the wall. Remove them, run the flooring and put them back. Thanks for cluing us in on the use of padding. I sent this video to my customer. Your expertise is much appreciated. 🙂🙂

A few years ago, we bought an apartment that the owner had made some upgrades to. One of those updates was to put Pecan Traffic Master over the carpet and pad. 🤦🏻‍♂️ when we did our first walkthrough, it was like walking in a hard sponge. Lol. Thankfully, the house was dirt cheap. I carefully removed the flooring piece by piece and found carpet, pad, and 2 layers of sheet flooring. Lol. I reinstalled it over a quality under pad and glued the seams with PVA. 4 years later, it still looking great. :)

We did my house with a pad and I am just full of regrets. At first it was amazing. It was quiet and soft and I loved the feel. But only after 6 months nearly all the floor where we walk is severely damaged from the flex of the cusion. I'm doing another house for my brother and I am not putting any padding down this next time...

So I wanted my main level to be one level of LVP with no transitions. Took out the carpet but the other 3 rooms with linoleum were higher than the subfloor (and I did not want the hassle of removing linoleum). So I used Steico 6mm underlayment in order to bring the subfloor up to the level of my linoleum. Steico is a wood product underlayment so you don't get that extra cushion that happens with those cheap roll-out pads. I also found this to be a great added sound deadener.

This video told me exactly what I wanted to hear. I’m about to lay a thick vinyl with attached pad on concrete and I’m being told to put extra padding by friends. I just don’t want that extra cushion. I don’t want any amount of soft feel under foot. I want the floor to feel solid. But people say “fatigue”. My foot! The only alternative for South Florida would be tile and you don’t hear people yelling “but fatigue” with tile. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t want the most solid surface you can get. Thanks as always Joe!

Joe, my wife and I decided on home depots life proof 2 years ago in three rooms in our house. This was before we saw your RUclips video. We followed the directions on these cartons but there was "Joe" explanations on installations problems. We went to the RUclips for help and it seems the the divine helper sent us to you and we do thank you. It was expensive to do all our rooms with this product but now we are thankful for this decision. A couple of transition instead of a possible 4 more were eliminated and this truly was a win-win for us.

From a flooring installer that also does remodels, DON'T install the plank and then cutout where the cabinets will go, unless you're installing your own cabinets. If I had to follow someone that did that and then I couldn't shim the front of the cabinets, had to have an extra person at all times to move the cabinets, I'd have to debate between doubling the price or leave

I always wondered about the seasonal movement of vinyl plank flooring when watching some of these other install videos. They say to leave a 1/4” gap all around when doing a massive room or whole house, then they tell you you leave a 1/4” gap when doing a small powder room or bathroom (typically about 5’x9’. It just doesn’t make sense to leave that big a gap in those small areas. I’ve done my two bathrooms with vinyl plank leaving a 1/8” gap and just used color matched silicone to fill the gaps at bathtubs, doorways and vanities. Gives a much cleaner look than 1/4 rounds or transitions everywhere.

Hey just a quick tip that I'd like to share with anyone who reads this. With CAULK, & Silicinized Caulk, they will MOLD when exposed to wet environs. SILICONE wont. Also when using silicone PUSH THE BEAD IT AHEAD OF THE TUBE, that way it's pushes out any water under it. And DRAG the caulk into the gaps. Also one thing think of the difference between the original floor level and your toilet flange and any height difference. Like if you had to add an underlayment, and then the LVP . You may need to add a TOILET FLANGE EXTENSION RING to level up the toilet.

Your advice fits what the manufacture recommends. Your advice on installing is better than most manufactures especially when it comes to using those spaces they push so hard.. spacers are nowhere near as nice and reliable as using some blocks to do your spacing with. Great advice and you certainly know your vinyl plank flooring.

    Joe:
I am installing Coreluxe Icelandic Walnut Waterproof LVP with pad on concrete floor.
I purchased the QuietWalk underlayment for LVP. Label states it can be used for LVP with pad.
I had already had purchased 6 mil moisture barrier and had one bedroom already done.
There is a closet in this bedroom which I had not yet started and had not put any moisture barrier in it.
So I laid the QuietWalk in it and installed the LVP.
I noticed right away that when I walked into the closet the floor sounded hollow compared to
the solid sound when walking in the bedroom. Since the closet was about 5 ft by 5 ft, I thought that
compared to the 12 by 16 ft bedroom that the closet could yield echoes.
So I laid out the quiet walk in another room and placed 10 planks on it.
When I walked on it - it sounded hollow. So I took the planks off the QuietWalk and placed them on the moisture barrier.
When I walked on it- it sounded solid.
At our church they installed LVP in the Welcome area and it sounds hollow when you walk on it.
The Welcome area has a concrete floor.
So I determined that the LVP with pad installed on QuietWalk will sound hollow.
I do not like that sound.
I prefer a solid sound when walking on LVP.
I will be returning the unopened rolls of QuietWalk.
I will continue to install LVP in the concrete floor rooms with the 6 mill moisture barrier.
Thank you for your videos. They have been very helpful.
God bless you and your family.

You advised not to put kitchen cabinets over vinyl flooring, but can you put closet wardrobes on top of vinyl flooring in a walk-in closet? I assume it is different than kitchen cabinets and if they can uphold the refrigerator weight then a closet system should be fine on top of the flooring. So glad you mentioned the bathroom vanity thing. I've torn out my tile...had some leveling work done on my slab and removed the bathroom vanity because my tile was installed under it and it was easier for me to remove the vanity than to cut the tile around it. But I "was" wondering if it was a good idea to go ahead and put the vinyl plank down before re-installing the vanity. The only real "up side" would have been that the plank would raise it to almost it's original height so that I'd really only have to caulk the gap between it and the vanity. I've decided to get the vanity back in first and may consider just shimming the cabinet to get it to it's original height. My only remaining fear/question is whether my plan to roll the frig out to the middle of the kitchen...lay my plank...and then roll the frig back before finishing the kitchen, is going to be a problem.
Any videos on this? I really don't want to move the thing out of the kitchen because it would either require a long trip to the front door and then back over newly laid vinyl plank to get it back...OR....a step down out the back door (and back up again)

Great...our plank buckled so think it was because the association made us use proflex padding and the installer kept the vinyl pad so too much double cushion?!

Don’t caulk all the way around your toilet.
Do the front 3 sides if you want but leave the back uncaulked in case there is a leak water can escape and you can see it.

Thanks for the info we ordered vinyl plank w/pad and a separate pad. HD said nothing about voiding my warranty. Buyer beware at the big box store.

Sorry but I forgot to ask if I can put laminate over tile. I was told yes but I really don't know and I am doing this myself so I don't want to take out tile if I dont have to. Thanks again.

Great educational video. I sell and install LVP professional and I get these questions all the time. You are spot on. 👍🏻

Getting ready to DIY some laminate plank in our bathroom and really appreciate your videos! However, everything I've heard from plumbers is NOT to caulk around the base of your toilet because, if the wax seal ever leaks, then you can't easily see that water and it forces it to build up and get under your flooring before you realize there's a problem. I've seen it done many many times, but it's not actually recommended.

This was very informative info. Especially the part about the fact that you can install plank under appliances (frig, stove etc.). I've been getting conflicting recommendations about this. Thank you for clarifying this!

So just to clarify that I understood you correctly, when I put it in my bathroom I dont want it under the toilet flange? The pergo or Quickstep flooring I'm looking at is either 8 or 10mm thick
