Mortal Kombat 2 Arcade PCB Repair (Corrupted Graphics)

  • This was sent to me by a friend who needed help and asked if I could take a look. The palette and pixel data was corrupt. The schematic in the manual pointed where to go. There are basically 6 chips that handle the palette and pixel data. UA8, UC8, UB9, UB10, UA9, UA10. Knowing this, I broke out the logic probe and began looking at the data lines on the chips. I had a board in the past with almost this exact same issue and the UB9 chip ended up being bad. That chip tested good on this board, so that wasn't the cause. Testing on, I found that the SD04 data line on UB10 was dead. No activity at all when it should have been pulsing. This could either be caused by UB10 itself being internally bad, or an open trace between it and the corresponding input at RAM chip UB11. Rang the trace for continuity and it was in fact OPEN. Installed a small bodge wire to reconnect the connection and...it's fixed! The memory expansion board had a bad U13 rom as well. Replaced it with one from a donor board and the board is back to 100%. Cleaned everything up and it's working perfectly now. Just wanted to share for those who might run into something like this in the future. Thanks.

    I'm highly intimidated by arcade boards lol. They're so expensive and becoming more rare. I only own one, currently. I have an MK4 in an Arcade1Up since emulation of that game sucks. I noticed in the manual, it shows an option to change the attract mode volume but mine doesn't have that option. I've got revision 3 running, any idea why I wouldn't have that option? I had planned to make the trip to your arcade this year but Covid really messed that up. I'll definitely be there next year, I was just looking at the map again planning the trip.

    I had something like this with a Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting board, except the board was dead you would hear the odd sound but nothing on screen, turned out to be 5 bad traces on the Motherboard A, really hard to see with the naked eye I had to use a strong eye glass to see the breaks lucky capcom also put a good chunk of solder points on their traces so using jumper wires I was able to fix it, not surprised they broke the traces are ridiculously fine, a good multimeter is your friend on repairs like this.

    Hi Mameman. I would need to replace the cmos related battery on my MK2 board. Is that just a simple swap of batteries or is any other maintenance required? thanks

    Hi, I have a Killer Instinct board that has I guess you call a Flex problem. It plays fine if I take one screw out on the bottom corner of the board to flex the board a little by putting a folded wash cloth behind it.. But when I take the wash cloth out to make the board flat it boots up only on a white static screen and does nothing? Is there anything I can do with this issues because the board still has life in it but I don't know where to start to fix this. Have you heard of this problem before or know how to fix this? I can ship it to you if you have time. Please let me know, thanks! :)

    Sorry MK to hit you up on this video but I don’t know which video is best. Do you have any recommendations for the replacement speakers for these Midway cabs? I bought some nice car audio speakers on AMAZON but they just sound mehhhhhhh …. Don’t know if the speakers are overpowered for what these systems can put out, maybe better to scale back and get cheaper less heavy duty speakers. Took out the old torn 3” and 6” speakers from my T2 and restoring a MK2 cab. Any suggestions on speaker replacements would be a godsend. Thank you sir.

      I can’t say for sure but I don’t think it would cause incorrect sounds. Would either be no sounds or distortion.

    Hey mate, I have a question, and Outworld said you might be the guy to ask, so, Do you know what is changed between MK2 R3.0 and 3.1? Aside from the version number of course.
    Apparently Roms UG12 and UJ12 are different, but I don't even know what those ROM's are for, I'd guess at interleaved graphics data, but even then, I wouldn't have a clue as to what graphics data had changed.
    Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

    • @YourMKArcadeSource
      @YourMKArcadeSource  3 года назад

      Correct. UG12 and UJ12 are the two program roms that contain the revision data. They are the only ones that get changed out from change to change. There’s no published listing for differences between 3.0 and 3.1, so j can’t say.

      @MRMIdAS2k 3 года назад

      @@YourMKArcadeSource no probs dude, didn't know if you'd noticed any differences yourself, but to my casual eye, they're identical in all but revision number. Thanks anyway.
