A Bit of an Improvement

- While looking for my college resume, I found the first viewmodel animation I ever did. For my 2019 college final, I built two guns, a shooting range, Catz's arms that I also rigged and textured, and then animated it all for a video that I had on my demo reel at the time.
I found the original file and got a friend to extract the gun from 3ds Max. I tried my best to fix it up in Blender, but some of the assets were either missing or broken. I used some CoD attachments to fill the empty rails on it instead.
It's neat to see how far I've come with this animation interest.
Some sounds and attachments are from CoD
Song is Construxon Time Again by Jacob 2-2
I first noticed the magazine getting caught on the edge of the well because it was just slightly off. The level of detail in these for him to even think of that stuff; the realism in that kind of motion is astounding. Just *chef’s kiss*.
Look closely at 0:48
The reload immediately afterwards shows that he learned from it and slowed down his hand so he could line it up better.
“A bit of an improvement”
My brother in Christ, you have gone from Doom 3 quality to Doom Eternal quality in 4 years.
I've... never seen someone comment like this before. It's honestly a bit jarring.
All that detail and the bolt still don’t move when firing? Daaaamn
@@scottcaramelNot to be the nerd but that gun’s charging handle doesn’t move when firing 🤓
You've made a concerted effort to improve your quality, and smooth your animations quite a lot. I'd say you've improved leagues compared to the start, and it's amazing to see the growth. Keep it up Layzuh!
Thank you muchly.
@@LayzuhCatz nah mate, thank you for sharing your progress, any plans to do a BTS side channel?
@@captainhydrodus4616 what could I possibly show?
@@LayzuhCatzwell clearly they meant the kpop band BTS
@@captainhydrodus4616strange suggestion
"Just a bit of an improvement."
"A bit" sounds like a bit of an understatement after seeing the 2019 footage and how you improved in the past 3-4 years since then. Good work mate.
holy shit 2019 was 3-4 years ago what the fuck
Call me a rube, but the only difference I see is in the textures and models. The animation on both looks great.
@@BombasticBooger one is clearly a little less smooth. Still great. But when they aim in. When they move around. It feels a little slow.
@@SamHoward-l9q i wasn’t commenting on the animation iirc i was commenting on how long ago 2019 was or something idk i can’t remember why i made the comment
@@BombasticBooger replied to the wrong person oops i'm a idiot.
That was your first ever viewmodel animation?
That was already amazing! The improvements today are insane as well, but holy smokes, you're progress and talebt is incredible!
HOLY CRAP THE WAY THE DECALS DISAPPEAR KN THE COW WHEN THE HAND GOES OVER IT IS SO CLEAN
You've improved so much! I'm stoked to see where you take this
The snappiness of the animations, the smooth follow throughs, the small imperfections (i.e. the mag hitting the side over going right in), amazing.
LayzuhCatz' uploads often elicit an _"Oooh, yea"_ response, and this is no different.
Great to see your progression from then to now! You're doing great work and I look forward to seeing more improvement :D
Man you do such a great job on these. They are just so smooth
It's crazy cause the older version was already really good, but with some jank, and the new one didn't just fix it, but you added so much and every movement feels real, every movement feels satisfying, energetic, and smooth. Amazing work, I hope to get to that level
...If you say so? The animation looks identical between the two demos, the only difference I see is in the models and textures, the two things I think of last when I'm criticizing something.
@CoralCopperHead are you telling me you don't notice any difference in the movement?
What do you think the point of the video was?
@@CoralCopperHead i forget how blind people can be sometimes
@@CoralCopperHead The animation was completely different, it showed such a massive improvement that it's super impressive. It's like the first one is your first decent conversation in a foreign language. You're super proud of it, but you still have such a long grind in front of you to get to fluency. The second one is having a phone conversation with someone, and then they're surprised that you're not a native when you meet irl.
The first one did that thing that animators sometimes do where they make everything weirdly floaty and bouncy. The second one is muuuuch more realistic. It's like night and day, absolute chef's kiss
This looks professional video game-level quality. To say this is a “bit” of an improvement is an understatement. Pure talent right here!
The original also looked like professional-quality work.
@@CoralCopperHead no, it's literal college student finals work. Still good ofc, but not professional.
Always neat to see the progress over the years. Keep it up!
Thanks man, I'll be sure to.
THE LEGEND
REAL
these artists, or animators, any sort of creators remaking their old work is always so nice to watch.
Especially when the remake is almost impossible to tell apart from the original. You know, aside from the new coat of paint.
seriously, the best part of all of these are the scene transitions, especially the fly-into the head of any character.
I love it! Feels like both you and your animation got some cool boosts in personality and confidence. Can't wait to see what the future holds here...
This is why I’m subscribed. These animations aren’t only smooth as butter but they have personality to it.
It's been an honor seeing you improve your art and show your talent.
Here's to the next few years, may they bring you prosperity and popularity all the same.
Reload animations are just an art at this point
this really inspires me to keep working on my animation. i just started like 2 months ago and i was feeling pretty down on myself cause nothings really turning out exactly how i want it to. Seeing your progress really gave me the confidence to continue though, someday i hope to animate with the same energy that you do. thanks for doing what you do :]
This reload animation is more realistic than real life, very good
Your growth as an animator has been phenomenal. But we also can't deny that your work in 2019 was also still really good
*melts in perfection *
*THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!*
The lighting and the design of the shooting range in the earlier animation made it look like something from 2005
"A bit of a improvement" nah man, you did a astronomical improvement. The details, the flow and the weight in your animations are just so damn good 👌
Growing sort of tired of the tacticool/hyperrealism inspired animations since they're becoming so common but Catz still manages to inject some personal touch and style into theirs that makes them far more enjoyable to look at. Not just adding shake to everything and anything.
You are so talented man, the level of detail is so immaculate.
I put on your videos because this stuff peaks my interest, just really fun to watch and all the personality your work has is neato.
This dude is getting better snd better each and every time I see him, and I’m over here struggling with stick node’s most simple skills😭
that magwell catch, omfg the sound of polymer clanking lightly against itself is so satisfying
Dam nice to see side by side improvement. I think you can appreciate that the most. :) 👍
The fact that even back then you animated light struggles really shows your work ethic, great animator or godly animator, you’ve always done that. You are severely underrated for all you do.
Your animations are simply incredible, the way the video comes together showing all the moving parts in amazing, and the models look super cool! Keep ip the good work
Cow-y now has self-healing abilities. This is going to be huge in the Cow-y fandom.
He never misses
Both literally and metaphorically
Just wanna say, I outloud went "yippee" when I saw the notification for this video
HA! Is that so.
What you really notice is the sense of weight in your newest animations. It's the secret sauce that can really elevate what would be a technically sound work into something you can believe in. All the other things like speed and exaggeration are important, of course, but nothing sells physically quite like weight.
the inspect for the improved version really reminds me of warzone 2019 inspect animations
they're very good indeed, it's a nice touch
Black polish was definitely a huge upgrade. 10/10
we need more of this specific, odd bullpup thing.
Love you animations. Don’t even know what you’re doing with them but they’re amazing.
The highest quality as always, but that's what you strive for isn't it? Well keep it up man, I think I speak for everyone when I say I can't wait to see where you go!
Very nice improvement over the years. From a flash looking game to something that looks like reality.
Man, even your first veiwmodel (no idea what that is but still,) animation was extremely good.
The level of detail is phenomenal 👌
The more times I see videos from you, the more I'm telling myself to start learning 3D to do gun stuff like this.
I must give props as the progress from before and after is very noticeable and apparent. Well done.
Only thing that throws me off is the charging handle is stationary which implies the bolt is not cycling - ejecting and feeding new rounds from the magazine.
Please give him a million subs, the graphics are amazing
Just from the gloves alone you can see the improvement
I like the little smile he had grabbing the gun.
this is classy as freak. keep up ur awesome work u r inspiring
you are very humble about ya own improvement and progress.
Dear lord someone give this man a job, this shit looks incredible
Even back then, all aspects were good, but your execution has gotten excellent.
It's strangely satisfying to look at these hands. I mean, everything about them is perfect.
The only thing lacking in the animation is a bit of a muzzle flash (not enough for me ig), but overall 9.5/10.
i believe that the lack of muzzle flash was intentional, he attached a flash hider. That being said, flash hiders aren't perfect and a little flash would go a long way for realism.
@@a_plastic_bag I totally missed that
Thanks for explanation
"it's been a while old friend, lets bring you up to speed" *gunshots*
Now this would be the perfect time to introduce our sponsor, the Sonoran Desert Institute.
Nice touch with the mag. Design doesn't incorporate any flare or encouraging design so its easy for the mag to clip the well.
imagine seeing this weapon in like 1-2 years irl bruh, could be a great improvement for the Czeska Zbrojowka
Considering that some AAA games have level of FP animations similar animations to 2019 it’s pretty darn good
The incredibly cursed P90 scifi bullpup makes my head so confused omg
I love your animations so much.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Muzzle flash suppressor. That's it. That's all it took for me to love the improvement.
love how the cow regenerates its wounds
looking smooth ~ and damn, the gun reminds me of a GHK G5 with the Bullpup kit!
I always love the weapon inspection part, it's basically CSGO
yoo the target dummy is so much improvement well done
Little more than just a bit. It's excellent!
A bit of an improvement is underselling yourself dude.
One of these days the cow is going to fight back.
I have no idea if that is a real firearm, but if it is, it might be the 3rd most satisfying weapon ever crafted
This gun looks so close to an Ash 12, I love it
I'm all for this style of improvement. The first concept of your reload animation was pretty good for the time, in the sense that the animation existing in 2019 was very reminiscent of the kind of gun animations you would see in early Halo games or Killzone 3 in particular. Somewhat floaty (especially with the magazines) and relatively slow.
The current animation is obviously higher quality but not in an obnoxious way (for lack of better term). The animations aren't too punchy, like what you would find in the latest Call Of Duty games where the gun operator is almost smashing and bashing every part of the gun together everytime for a reload.
I hope this makes sense, but your gun feel conveys the right amount of "ka-chunk" for a weapon. Not too much that the gun might fall apart after one battle. Nor is it too less that the gun is being operated in a game with limited processing power.
That hand guard makes the mag well so bad. It's your design, and you are free do do whatever you want with it, but I'd get rid of it for ergonomics sake. Just imagine trying to put a mag in and getting your finger crushed between the guard and magazine, yeouch.
You could also just extend the shroud on the mag well similar to the AR platform. On an AR the mag well comes down to the end of the trigger guard. This eliminates conflict between your thumb and the trigger guard, and only results in a bit more of the magazine being covered.
Overall still a fantastic set of animations, sorry for ranting about gun design. 😅
0:50 Oh god that STRUGGLE... I love it!!!
your sona is cute as hell
I love this so much, great work!
Am I the only one who thinks they both look perfectly fine?
That is one sexy P90.
Wait nvm it's not a p90
To be honest, the 2019 animation feels like gun animations you’d see in the original Borderlands.
How does your 2019 final look so perfectly 90s CG? I don't think I could replicate that level of nostalgia if I wanted to.
Gonna show this to some gun-obsessed edgy antifur and watch them lose their shit over how smooth the animation is and then wait till they realize it was made by a "furry" and immediately claim its fake lmao
He wants to show this to himself how much he improves
I don’t see the difference, one is in eevee and one is cycles
Jokes aside you have improved a lot, i aspire to be this good at animating some day.
Love your animations man: they're always coming up on my recommended feed. one thing to note though is that the PEQ15 is backwards. other than that love the stuff you do man.
You've definitely improved!
The model of the gun reminded me of the Meerkat by Wouter Kroon. Such a neat design.
Allthough I know you cant allways see muzzle flare irl, the lack of it at all on the sevond one triggies me.
damn that cow texture is so life like, i bet the texture material file must be like at least 2mbs. the work you've done since your 2019 demo real shows that you have by a lot but at the same time it feels like a short time span, anyway, keep up the good work, I find it to be inspiring.
2mb is generally pretty small when it comes to textures honestly 😅
@@zer0synd1cate i made a mistake, I thought that was the original file buts its not, its the compressed variant. The non compressed is 6 gigs
I kinda like the old one more, mainly the firing animation. Even though there is more detail and the new one is MUCH better, I like the way the old one feels, how do I put it, smooth? Maybe it's because I animate 2D stuff and it needs to look smooth without it looking choppy, but idk. Still much of an improvement and definitely love the details in the new animation.
The glow up is real!
Went from PS2 animation to MW2019. Very nice.
absolutely incredible
so the mouse/rat/funky guy has always been there from the start? awesome
love that for your college final, you were just full sending the fact you're a furry
sick video, the music reminds me so much of the how it’s made music
Camera shake is everything xD
That is quite an improvement.
ah yes, my favourite furry weapon man
Come a long way, huh?
