This is the best tutorial on this subject that I've seen on RUclips and I've watched a lot. I'm rebuilding my front porch railings and posts myself and have never attempted this type of a project. Seeing how you fastened the balusters to top & bottom strips first and then attached the assembly to the top & bottom rails was very helpful.
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
This beats the hell out of those old home improvement TV shows that make everything look way easier and faster than reality. I love your pacing and level of detail. Very nice.
Hey John, nice that you got some of the material free, but the end results is what counts. The pictures at the end say it all. The whole project came out awesome! The proportions are perfect and the curb appeal is really a plus. Great job!
Awesome build !! Just what I was looking for. I’m rebuilding my Mums front porch railing in a few months and like with all new projects, research before I start. Thankyou for such a simple explanation and it was like I guessed tbh - it’s the detail in the prep work that makes or breaks any new piece. Time consuming? Yup. Worth it? Absolutely ! Your vids are just brilliant - thanks again 👍👍👍
There is literally NO other tutorial that explains the process of building a deck railing using nail strips in as much detail as you do. I have been researching for weeks and have watched countless videos on the subject matter and there is only 1 other video by This Old House that kindaaa explains the process but not like you!!! THANK YOU!!!! Every detail was exactly what I needed in order to obtain the knowledge I need to make the best possible railing for a client. Seriously, I can’t say thank you enough!!! Don’t ever stop making videos like this! You’re amazing! 😁 *definitely subscribing after watching that
I am so glad I found your Channel. I have to rebuild my outdoor banister which is rotten and I've never done anything like this before. I'm so glad I found a Craftsman like you who is meticulously perfect , wish me luck!!!
I respect the heck out of you John for putting in the effort to use reclaimed decking on this project. Alot of people wouldn't do that, but I love it. Turned out great.
That does look real good, you had some good tools to work with and you put ya heart into it, the color of your house and the white trim looks real good! Great Job!
We built this railing on our new build farmhouse. It was inexpensive and exactly what we were looking for. It’s very sturdy but not too bulky looking. We purchased all of our wood, and fortunately, the painters will caulk and paint it all! You made it look easy and it really was. Love it! Thank you so much for sharing this video. Your home is beautiful by the way.
You are a craftsman. The care and detail that you put into the project would leave many so called professionals hanging their heads in shame. I shall be using some of your techniques to rebuild by deck railing. BTW, love your workshop. Regards Steve from Australia
Great presentation, love the simplicity of your demonstration, I will be building an inside Railing an a staircase Railing, this helps me to know exactly what I have to do. Thanks, Donald.
You made it look so easy!! I just completed my porch but instead of using 1/2" pieces to apply my spindles, I used 1/4" precut shims which made it difficult when attaching the spindles because the would would split in various places. Of course, I had add'l work to do as far as dealing those areas b4 applying paint. Thanks for sharing!
Just found this video, fantastic job and looks great, ive had to rip all our porch railings off as they were rotten after 16 yrs. Have to replace them next spring, this is exactly how i will do it. Thanks so much for the video.
A very detailed and thought out video, I'm going to be closing other end of my daughter's porch and this will be a great reference for the small job...again, hat's off to you!!!
It looks fantastic! The whole house is so different than what you started with. It's really coming together now. When can we expect an updated before/after video? Oh, I also can hardly wait to see any improvements you've made in the basement too.
Awesome reuse of old timber, great finish. In the past I have just pressure washed timber beams and been able to use them in renovation projects. The advantage of old timber is its far less likely to move or warp.
Those look great John! A little bit of work.. ok, a LOT of work and you reused some lumber that would have otherwise been burned or gone to the landfill and saved yourself some money and got a great looking result.

It never stopped, really, but I can't post videos when nothing interesting is happening. Not to mention that videos are a big time investment, and it makes a lot more sense for me to make videos for my other, much bigger channels.
Nice job man, I made some chippendale sections for my front stoop way back but just attached them to the top and bottom 2 x 4's with screws so I could easily remove the whole section when it's time to repaint and then slip back in and attach. I only had 2 side pieces though.
Great job done John, I'm just finishing the inside of my extention I built last year. I'm sick of how my house looks from the road it looks like a building site. Next big job for me is a driveway.

Awesome reuse of old timber, great finish. In the past I have just pressure washed timber beams and been able to use them in renovation projects. The advantage of old timber is its far less likely to move or warp.
That's what I like most about using used lumber, it has given up the drying stresses.
THAT CAME OUT REALLY NICE!!!.... I HAVE A SHORT RUN FRONT DUE TO BE REPLACED THIS SUMMER...
Came out very nice. Good proportions. You should show a picture of the House when you first moved in. What a difference.
