You didn't put down the metal post Amazon no#I have the exact same porch that you do and I want to do the exact same thing you did to your front stairs with both railings on each side the vinyl with the metal inserts. Instead of using treated wood. Thank you. Good video as well as information how to do it.
I’m replacing four 12’ porch columns and the railing once everything is delivered, this was exactly what I needed to see. Great tutorial and everything looks great!
That looks soo nice. You did a fantastic job with the rail and making it seem super doable. looking forward to adding rails to my steps also. Thank you!
Same. I was really sad to see my 80 year old cast iron railings go, but the previous owner who lived here for 30 years never did any upkeep on them and they were failing. Did you get your railings replaced?
Nice tutorial. Only question I have is that the link you posted for the post is the "sleeved bagged" version but the one you seem to use in the video is the traditional one. Any reason for the difference and what exactly is the difference between the two (the traditional is 12 and the bagged is double that price 24). Thanks.
WOw, Your videos are such a cut and above most DIY posts. THank you so much. I just repaired my concrete steps and wanted to put railings on to code. Please tell me the size of the concrete anchor bolts . Are they 1/4 by 5" or 3/8 by 5" . ALso the washers and shims look to be a plastic/rubber kind. Thanks again
This is an awesome tutorial.. I'll be doing this within two weeks to replace rusted iron railings (not savable).. Need to remove old paint from the concrete steps first!
For me, the ideas in ruclips.net/user/postUgkxy_pn55PK60wAV3X_C_RoLS_67mNonoCE Plans were a starting point for building different sheds . Ryan gives ideas that allow an individual to draw nicest conclusions into the design and building of his or her own shed.
I appreciate and enjoy your work. I have a question that pertains to new precast concrete residential steps. First, can you attach these railings to precast steps using a hammer drill without breaking our cracking the concrete. Secondly if you can do this how far from the edge of the step should you be for the holes to be safely drilled. All the videos I have watched make no distinction between the use of hammer drilling on precast concrete or on poured concrete. Thanks.
Im wondering the same thing. Also wondering about the use of silicone in the drill holes for colder climates to prevent cracking with the freeze and thaw
I generally us a 3" space from the edge of the porch to the outside edge of the post base. That way it reduces the chance of breaking the concrete corners & edges off. If you break the edge of your porch, then you are in for more work than originally intended. I will gladly sacrifice a couple inches of porch for the safety of concrete not cracking due to drilling or someone falling into the railing.
Great work and you made a good video. I was wondering what type of anchor screws you used? Im sure I can find them. I didnt see them listed. Thank you.
The video is great! The only thing I am missing is the maker of the concrete bolts and washers to know where to buy them. I'm not sure if they are from the manufacturer of the aluminum posts or another item to be purchased from Lowes.
The shims usually come with the post kit. Post mounting kits are usually sold separately. I use the anchors that have the sleeve that draws up with the tightening of the nut on top. Ive used tapcons before & had horrible luck with them holding. Remember, its not just about form, its also about function. These rails will have to hold up anyone who stumbles & falls against them. So make sure your posts DO NOT MOVE when tightened down.
Well ill tell ya, i still go to work every day and do the videos on the side. Everyone says i should film 24/7. The problem would be the time to edit the video. I will be doing this full-time when i retire soon. There will be so so so many things i can cover. Thanks for watching William
how much did you spend in all your materials? great video...also i live in CT and don't know how much to charge...im planning in using the same materials you used and i have to just the steps in front of the main door of the house...thank you
Very helpful, thanks. I watched the video before installing the posts and sleeves into my concrete porch and steps. I'm about to do the handrails and stairs tomorrow. What type of blade should I have on my saw?
Very impressive! You mentioned you used a rotary hammer drill. Would a regular hammer drill work too? Also, I've read not to use the hammer function while drilling. What are your thoughts on that?
@@matthewmorgan4759 I appreciate the response. I actually tackled this job a few weeks ago and it went well. Yes, I used the hammer function lol and the extra bits was something I also did. In my opinion the few extra dollars was money well spent. Thanks for sharing!
Great, you're drilling with a 1/4" X 6 " masonry drill bit but are you also using 1/4" bolts? I don't believe you mentioned the size of the bolts. Can anyone respond? Thanks much!
Hi Gary, a 1/4" concrete bolt as showon in this video will need a 1/4" masonry bit. Concrete bolt diameters are measured inside the thread. The agressive treading goes beyond the hole you drill. So when buying concrete bolts ( not tap con screws) the size of the bolt is the size of the drill bit. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful! You certainly made it look easy. My home has two covered porches with concrete decking - alas, all the railings need to be removed, and new railings installed. By any chance do you live anywhere near Maine?!! ; D
Hi, Masons repointed stairs and put on new granite treads. Said they wouldnt put my old iron railing back on because it wasn’t up to code so I bought a pvc stair kit at Home Depot. They wouldnt put them on. So I need to do it myself. How would I do this with granite treads? What drill bit/screws would I buy. Cant’t use the screws that come with the railing kit, way too long. Thx in advance for any help! Amy
These spindles can be installed either way as per the instructions. The homeowner liked them this way. I agree with you that the spindles are on upside down. The fat part should always be towards the bottom and the skinny end towards the top.
I thought aluminum and concrete had an undesirable chemical reaction that causes corrosion. How are the actual posts holding up (under the sleeves)? Any corrosion happening at the aluminum post bases after a couple years? Thanks in advance. Trying to figure out what to do for our own railing replacement.
The top rail screws on the stair go through metal or just plastic insert? I saw that you extended the length of the post by offsetting plastc insert between metal and sleeve. Thanks
Do you know if this rail system is designed to support a person body weight and keep people from falling. I saw one system tha specifically said it wasn’t that it was only decorative
Can you please make the 2 reals for me. How much is the price for 2 handrail. How l could contact you for a estimate. I’m and old lady. You did a wonderful job. God bless you.
my concrete stair is kind of steep at 40 degrees. The Lowes dekorators kit warns that it doesn’t work up to about 35 degrees but I dont know why. Can I I still use vinyl kits at 40 degrees?
I had to go back and look, lol. It is a 2x4 flat ways. I use it to keep the bottom rail spaced and parallel to the stair angle. Thanks for watching Tony
Be patient and do the best you can and don't be scared, lol. I have a 4 part series of " How to Build a Pool Deck 2018 ". I will be publishing all 4 parts this Sunday March 25, 2018. I hope this will help you.
Oh no i still have the porter cable impact and drills along with every other brand of drill. Now I'm thinking to have a garage sale to ease back on my tool hoarding. Thanks for watching
Two words that stuck in my mind on watching this video: Clean and Professional! Not just with the work but with the video editing as well.

Really improved the look of the house. I have the cast iron rails. Going to replace with vinyl, thanks for the video.

Great job! I’m going to send you pics before and after, when I complete my job. Thanks so much for sharing.
All videos should be done like this!! Fantastic!!
Excellent job. Very well done video . Thanks for sharing. People like you are the good part of the internet
PERFECT! Best railing installation video I seen. Thank You. Nice work!
Excellent instructions-- words and video clips were perfect. THANK YOU.

Did you ever figure out what to do for this?
Great instructional video - you make it look like a breeze and i hope my project goes nearly as smoothly. Thank you!
Great tutorial and very professionally done, right down to ground cover sheets for vinyl debris for the grass.

Time for an Intervention, lol

Great video, thank you. One question: how did you line up the posts so that there were inline? Laser line? String line?
This is so 2005 it's crazy. Great video though, super helpful, I'll be doing this soon.
Awesome. The hard part seems to be getting all of the parts together.
What a beautiful railing. Thank you.
Nice work! Perfect timing as I'm about to do the soon to my house. Thanks!
Dude you made it look so easy. Great video love it!!! Now I’m off to see if I can come close !! Thanks 😊
Very nice job. Great video. Very informative and professionally shot.
Excellent job on this video. Gave me the exact info. I need to do my own installation. Thanks, Craig!
Great work and you made a good video. I was wondering what type of anchor screws you used? Im sure I can find them. I didnt see them listed. Thank you.
Amazing work as always Craig, you're a true Craftsman.
Thanks for the kind words Rodrigo.
Great work! Excellent teaching. I will give this a shot very soon.
What is the approximate cost for this style of railing? I absolutely love it
Thanks for these nicely detailed instructions.

Ditto
Amazing instructions and finish
Wow! You make this look so easy.
Awesome video. I was wondering how to make the posts plumb because my new porch has a noticeable pitch. Where did you get those shims?
The shims usually come with the post kit. Post mounting kits are usually sold separately. I use the anchors that have the sleeve that draws up with the tightening of the nut on top. Ive used tapcons before & had horrible luck with them holding.
Remember, its not just about form, its also about function. These rails will have to hold up anyone who stumbles & falls against them. So make sure your posts DO NOT MOVE when tightened down.
Great tutorial!! It was just what I was looking for.
I hope more videos are coming!!

how much did you spend in all your materials? great video...also i live in CT and don't know how much to charge...im planning in using the same materials you used and i have to just the steps in front of the main door of the house...thank you
Went to Home Depot today and spent $740 for pvc railings and I have 4 steps...
I spent 750 at home depot for three steps.
You’re great at teaching, thank you
Very helpful, thanks. I watched the video before installing the posts and sleeves into my concrete porch and steps. I'm about to do the handrails and stairs tomorrow. What type of blade should I have on my saw?
Great job, I really need this done since I am crippled.
Very impressive! You mentioned you used a rotary hammer drill. Would a regular hammer drill work too? Also, I've read not to use the hammer function while drilling. What are your thoughts on that?
My dewalt 20v cordless hammer drill got the job done. Be sure to buy a couple of extra masonry drill bits.
@@matthewmorgan4759 I appreciate the response. I actually tackled this job a few weeks ago and it went well. Yes, I used the hammer function lol and the extra bits was something I also did. In my opinion the few extra dollars was money well spent. Thanks for sharing!
I didn't see a link for the concrete bolts, washers and shims. Any chance you have a link for those?
thanks for this video, good job explaining everything.
great job, so well done
I watched with great pleasure. Professional work.
Thanks for watching
when already civilization will reach my country)))
Thanks. Just what I needed! Excellent video.
Thanks for this video. It was a big help.
Craig, where do you get those metal post kits?
Do you have a link for the individual wood railing that go in the holes?
you never need to paint these, they look good even over time,

If we wanna update the porch concrete floor with composite deck boards or tiles. Should we do the floor first or railing first ?

Craig, I think this is very nice. What was your total cost for materials not including tools rental/purchase?
I thought aluminum and concrete had an undesirable chemical reaction that causes corrosion. How are the actual posts holding up (under the sleeves)? Any corrosion happening at the aluminum post bases after a couple years? Thanks in advance. Trying to figure out what to do for our own railing replacement.
Someone leaned on it and it fell over and cracked the concrete
Nice video. Only one problem.... WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE KIT YOU USED
Would is there anything on the baluster brackets? What measurement to use and the different type.
great video! which ryobi drill you use ?
That's a very nice look great job as well!
Thanks #59, This was an easy job and very satisfying at the end.
The top rail screws on the stair go through metal or just plastic insert? I saw that you extended the length of the post by offsetting plastc insert between metal and sleeve. Thanks
Excellent how to video! I only wish that the entire project too 7 minutes though
That looks amazing
Great video. Would you recommend using this same mounting system on brick?
Beatful job my brother....amazing
Do you know if this rail system is designed to support a person body weight and keep people from falling. I saw one system tha specifically said it wasn’t that it was only decorative

my concrete stair is kind of steep at 40 degrees. The Lowes dekorators kit warns that it doesn’t work up to about 35 degrees but I dont know why. Can I I still use vinyl kits at 40 degrees?
Great work. Love the videos sir!

What manufacturer provided the “ Turn balusters “? The reference shows squared ones. Thank you
Nice work bro!!! And great video. You earned a sub from me

I had to go back and look, lol. It is a 2x4 flat ways. I use it to keep the bottom rail spaced and parallel to the stair angle. Thanks for watching Tony

Hello Graig, how is water that may collect in the bottom stair rails do to the gap between the bottom rail and the baluster going to get out.
My husband drilled two 1/4” holes under the bottom rail before installation per instructions. Purchased railing from Lowes. (Instructions inside box).
